Jonathan Cenzual Burley was born in 1980 in Salamanca, the part of Spain where his third feature El Pastor was shot. He had no formal training in cinema but took after school classes in drawing at age twelve,and was given a camera by his mother to shoot photographs.At age sixteen,he relocated to Brighton, England, a country where he would spend much time though he would later travel to Ecuador and Argentina. Before he made his first film in 2011, he had done music videos and video installations for live concerts, and had participated as a researcher and a runner for three years (2008-2011) on the British music based comedy TV series, Never Mind the Buzzcocks.Burley had trouble getting funding back in Spain for his third feature and, unable to afford to pay extra crew, he landed up not only producing, writing and directing but also doing the cinematography and the editing.
