Priyanka Chopra-Produced Doc Debuting On Prime Video India
Women of My Billion (Womb), a documentary about the forms of violence faced by women in India, will premiere exclusively on Prime Video India on May 3. Produced by Apoorva Bakshi and Monisha Thyagarajan’s Awedacious Originals in association with Priyanka Chopra Jonas’ Purple Pebble Pictures, the documentary follows protagonist Srishti Bakshi on a walking pilgrimage across India – spanning 3,800 km over 240 days – to talk to women from various backgrounds about their struggles and dreams. “Women have borne the brunt of gender bias for far too long, enduring a silent struggle against entrenched social injustices that seek to suppress their voices. With Womb, the aim is to transcend these struggles – to be a beacon of hope,” said Chopra Jonas, Producer at Purple Pebble Pictures. “Womb is not merely a depiction of pain and suffering, but a rallying cry and call for solidarity and action.

Paramount+ may have culled a wealth of international originals in the past couple of weeks but that hasn’t stopped it committing to a UK thriller series set in a world where men live under a strict nightly curfew.
Starring Sarah Parish, Doctor Who’s Mandip Gill, Mitchell Robertson and singer Alexandra Burke, Curfew is set in a society where all men live under ‘The Women’s Safety Act’, meaning they are bound by a strict curfew from 7Pm to 7Am every night, with their movements tracked by an ankle tag 24 hours a day. When a woman’s body is discovered, brutally murdered during curfew hours and left on the steps of the Women’s Safety Centre, veteran Police officer Pamela Green believes that a man is responsible. But in a world where men are bound by the curfew system, her theory is rejected.

The former British reality TV juggernaut The X Factor is under fire, with former staff revealing that producers used a secret coding system to highlight contestants with the “potential to kick off.”
During the BBC podcast, Offstage: Inside the X Factor, one former production employee described coding including “E for entertaining, then Pko for potential kick-off.”
They added: “PKOs were those who might fight back, yell or drop a mic in annoyance. We all remember the time where the girl punched her best friend. Any sense of that? You put them straight through.”
The X Factor aired for 17 years following its debut in 2004, and made stars of bands including Little Mix and One Direction, and solo artists Leona Lewis and Alexandra Burke.
The Times of London reports that the podcast raises more questions about the quality of care accorded to participants in the hit show, including making them sign contracts without due diligence,...

Andrew Haigh’s touching new drama All Of Us Strangers was the big winner at the 2023 British Independent Film Awards (BIFA).
As the calendar year draws to a close, we’re also inching close toward the season that will see multiple prestigious awards bodies, in theory, hand the best films of the year a golden statuette. The season kicked off with the British Independent Film Awards, also known as BIFA 2023, which were held in London on the 3rd of December.
Lolly Adefope and Kiell Smith-Bynoe hosted the event which celebrated British cinema, especially the slightly lesser-seen films with budgets far smaller than that of Oppenheimer. There were some terrific films nominated this year, and the roster of winners was as surprising as it was satisfying.
Andrew Haigh’s All Of Us Strangers was the biggest winner of the night, taking home a total of four awards plus three previously announced ones.

Even by its own ridiculously high standards, 2023 has been one hell of a year for British independent cinema. Whilst Hollywood has been all but shut down by the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, over on this side of the pond, it feels like the candle for British indie cinema – and our collective love for those who make it possible – has never burned brighter. As such, it comes as no surprise to see today’s announcement of the nominations for the British Independent Film Awards 2023 filled with wall-to-wall bangers that represent the very best that British filmmaking has to offer.

Alexandra Burke and Natey Jones in Pretty Red Dress
Dionne Edwards’ directorial feature debut, Pretty Red Dress, tells the story of Travis (Natey Jones), who returns to his wife Candice (Alexandra Burke) and daughter Kenisha (Temilola Olatunbosun), having served time. When Candice, who has an audition to play Tina Turner in a new musical, eyes a red dress in a shop window, Travis buys it for her. Something strange happens – Travis finds himself drawn to the dress. He begins wearing it secretly, but why? To feel pretty, he tells his daughter when she discovers him crossdressing. Travis’ exploration of his feminine side changes the family’s dynamic in unexpected ways, and challenges his masculine identity in their urban South London community.
In conversation with Eye For Film, Edwards and Jones discussed the deeper meanings of their crossdressing story, how it was driven by a search for answers, and their interest...

Natey Jones and Alexandra Burke play a couple tussling with dreams and secret shame in Dionne Edwards’s defiant yet uplifting drama with music at its core
This feisty, uplifting Brit pic arrives in UK cinemas just weeks after the announcement of the death of Tina Turner – an indomitable figure who serves as an inspirational role model for at least one of the film’s key characters. Indeed, there’s more than a hint of the great soul singer’s spirit in the very likable and slyly subversive feature debut from writer-director Dionne Edwards. Like Turner, Pretty Red Dress is both playful and defiant, swept along on a tide of toe-tapping tunes that tug at the heartstrings, yet unafraid to face up to complex personal issues while still maintaining its solidly mainstream appeal.

Pretty Red Dress impressed audiences last Autumn at the London Film Festival, and is now making its way to cinemas across the UK, and it’s a musical-drama that deserves to be seen. To mark the film’s release, we had the pleasure in speaking to the two leading stars, Alexandra Burke and Natey Jones, as well as the director Dionne Edwards.
It’s worth noting that these interviews took place a day or two prior to the passing of the icon that is Tina Turner, but needless to say even before the sad news came in, we still discussed the merit of her work, and how it compliments this narrative, and for Burke, just the sheer pleasure of having the opportunity to perform it on screen. We also discuss masculinity, casting, South London, football and even Beyonce. Watch both interviews in their entirety below.

It goes without saying that life in prison is tough on almost everyone, but for some people, it creates additional layers of strain. Few environments are so narrowly focused around restrictive ideas of gender. To survive in prison, a man has to give the impression of flawless, unimpeachable masculinity. The pressure this puts on men who are naturally inclined to express themselves in different ways can be overwhelming.
When we meet him, Travis (Natey Jones) has just left prison. He’s picked up by his partner, Candice (Alexandra Burke), who is thrilled that they’re together again and wants to celebrate. He calls his mum, who is determined to throw a party for him. He really just wants to chill out. Then there is teenage daughter Kanisha (Temilola Olatunbosun) to deal with. Candice has been finding her increasingly difficult to deal with and wants him to lay down the law.

Former X Factor judge Cheryl has explained why she doesn’t think the talent series should return.
The singer, 39, first appeared on the judging panel of the ITV talent show in 2008, before stepping down in 2011.
She returned in 2017 to assist former fellow judge and series producer Simon Cowell in the judges’ houses part of the competition. The show ran for one more series, and was officially cancelled by ITV in 2021.
Despite this, Cowell claimed in November 2022 that a future reboot is “more likely than not”.
When asked about this in a new interview with The Independent, Cheryl suggested Cowell would “struggle to admit” the talent contest had run its course, because it’s his “baby”.
“I don’t know if the public want it anymore,” she said.
“We had Pop Idol before that, then Popstars, then us,” the singer continued, referring to Popstars: The Rivals, the series that launched her...

Dawn French has joked that she wants to be embalmed and buried in a perspex coffin with the word “slut” written on it.
French appeared on the premiere episode of Kathy Burke’s new podcast, Where There’s a Will, There’s a Wake, released on Tuesday (29 November). The podcast sees Burke asking celebrity guests about their imagined deaths and funerals.
The Vicar of Dibley star, 65, opened up about how she would like her corpse to be presented when she dies.
Speaking about the circumstances behind her death, French said she would like to die “Tommy Cooper-style” on stage.
In 1984, Cooper died of a heart attack in front of millions of television viewers during his act on the Royal Variety show.
French then divulged what her dream funeral procession would look like, which includes a see-through “Barbie” hearse.
She joked: “I’m humble… I’m low-key. I’d like a see-through hearse,...

It says a lot that Katya Jones winning Strictly Come Dancing in 2017 is arguably the least interesting thing to happen to her since joining the show. Along the way, the Russian dancer has faced scandals, divorce and arguments with her partners, while honing a skill for polishing untrained celebrities into dance diamonds. Where certain pros who may now sit on the judging panel would get lumped with a “joke” contestant like, off the top of my head, Ann Widdecombe, and accept that stereotype, giving them unchallenging choreography and even, say, dragging them around the floor, Jones never does. For her, there are no “joke” contestants. Not Ed Balls. Not Tony Adams.
On day one of her first season in 2017, the pro was dropped in at the deep end. Partnered with Balls, a former shadow chancellor famous for, among other things, tweeting the words “Ed Balls” with no explanation, she chose to swim.

Music is a big part of "Pretty Red Dress," the debut feature from writer-director Dionne Edwards. It's essential to its characters as well. The film opens with an electric musical performance that channels the best of the 1960s before settling into itself. Music is central to Candice (Alexandra Burke), as she dreams of being a star in London -- since she has been blessed with immense musical talent, her dreams may just become reality. She's got the opportunity of a lifetime thanks to her agent, who's got her an audition to play Tina Turner in an upcoming West End (the UK's equivalent to Broadway) musical. A few key scenes focus on the brilliance of Candice's voice, and she does a number of auditions to the songs of Tina Turner.
The dreams Candice has been fighting for her whole life may be coming to fruition, but her personal life has some significant challenges.

Jimmy Carr has been mocked by Amanda Holden for having a hair transplant.
Holden made the dig while appearing as a judge on the forthcoming episode of I Can See Your Voice on BBC One (Saturday 22 October).
In a clip seen by Metro, the judging panel – which also includes Carr, Alison Hammond and Alexandra Burke – were introduced to two friends who met while working at a hair salon.
“Do I look alright?” Holden, 51, jokingly asked, before pointing at Carr, 50, and saying: “What about his new hair? Because that was from someone else – it was donated.”
Carr was quick to join in on the joke at his own expense. “It’s from a donor,” he said. “One of One Direction looks terrible now.”
Holden is used to being the butt of Carr’s jokes on the show. In last week’s episode, when a mystery singer calling themselves No Scrubs performed wearing a doctor’s uniform,...

Last weekend, a dance-off decision landed Strictly in hot water… again. Singer Fleur East faced radio presenter Richie Anderson in the bottom two, despite the fact both had placed respectably in the middle of the leaderboard. East and her partner Vito Coppola had performed an elegant American smooth to “Part of Your World” from The Little Mermaid. Anderson and Giovanni Pernice, meanwhile, had spent a good portion of their samba to “Hakuna Matata” faffing around (as Len Goodman would have grumpily put it) dressed as a meerkat (Anderson) and a surprisingly curvaceous warthog (Pernice).
Now, you don’t need multiple Latin championship wins under your belt – as head judge Shirley Ballas has – to see that there was a clear winner to this “Battle of the Disneys” dance-off, and it wasn’t Anderson. The other judges unanimously voted to save East, meaning she stayed in the competition, but Ballas admitted her...

An elaborately beaded red shimmy dress becomes a talisman of beauty, truth and freedom in Dionne Edwards’ debut feature, BFI London Film Festival premiere Pretty Red Dress, a vivid portrait of a family with at least one too many secrets lurking in the closet along with that alluring frock.
Candice, (Alexandra Burke) a thirtysomething supermarket check-out girl with a big voice and big theatrical ambitions, believes it will help turn her into Tina Turner; it is her chief prop at her successive auditions for a forthcoming musical. But for her bad-boy partner Travis, slipping his tattooed torso into that dress when nobody else is at home makes him feel at last like his real, whole self. It is a self that is equal parts lipstick and beard, heels and muscles. It is also a self he can’t show to anyone.

London film festival: Terrific performances from Natey Jones, Alexandra Burke and Temilola Olatunbosun match this tender drama about masculinity
There’s warmth, humour, sadness and tenderness in this big-hearted feature debut from writer-director Dionne Edwards. It’s a movie about masculinity that could have been solemn and prescriptive; instead it’s pulsing with humanity, thanks in great part to tremendous performances from its leads Natey Jones, Alexandra Burke and smart newcomer Temilola Olatunbosun.
Burke is already known as the West End performer, recording star and X Factor winner; she plays Candice, a singer about to land the role of a lifetime playing Tina Turner in a big musical – just a few more audition rounds to go. But she has problems: teen daughter Kenisha (Olatunbosun) is in trouble at school, and her partner, Travis (Jones) is just out of prison on licence, his ankle tag giving him a strange and sinister limp.

Every year, Strictly Come Dancing brings its yearly spook-fest back to the dance floor.
By now, we’ve seen hundreds of dancers take part in the themed competition week, hoping to impress the judges with routines that are less trick, more treat.
For fans, Halloween is one of the biggest nights in the Strictly calendar. Design-wise, it doesn’t get more extra than this, with the perfect performance featuring a spooky costume and song choice that are well linked together. However, it’s not always easy and we often see a slightly spooky song title pushed together with a random costume that doesn’t exactly make sense or scream Halloween. After all, there are only so many times the show can do the “Monster Mash”.
The best Halloween dances bring all these elements together, from design, to music, to (naturally) the actual dancing. Among this top 10 we have a lot of tangos,...
