Raphael (Luke Wilcox) is a a typical 2007 teenage dirtbag who gets wrangles into working as an informant for a local lunatic cop in directors Carl Fry and Maxwell Nalevansky’s uproariously funny cringe comedy, Rats! When Rafi is picked up for tagging a beloved payphone in his native Pfresno, Texas, he finds himself firmly in the sights of the town’s worst law enforcement agent, Officer Williams (Danielle Evon Ploeger). Convinced that Rafi’s small time dope dealer cousin, Mateo (Darius Autry) is using his hustle as a cover for supplying international terrorists with nukes, Williams and Rafi’s mom force him to move in with Mateo and report back on his activity. From there, Rafi’s life spins increasingly out of control in the most hilarious ways possible. The...

In Southern California, there is a hotbed of paranormal activity known as the Anza-Borrego Desert State Park. The area called the Borrego Triangle boasts stories of UFOs, eight-foot-tall ghost skeletons, and a furry cryptid known as the Borrego Sandman. Filmmaker Zeshaan Younus and producer Trevor Dillon crowdfunded, assembled a small cast, and spent a week in the Anza-Borrego Desert filming Younus’ directorial debut, The Buildout, with real life paranormal investigator Greg Newkirk (Hellier) serving as Executive Producer.
Part found footage and part paranormal fever dream, The Buildout draws from the rich supernatural history of the location, as well as the majestic scenery, with captivating results.
The Buildout follows close friends Dylan (Hannah Alline) and Cameron (Jenna Kanell) as they venture out into the California desert on motorbikes. The two women have been friends since childhood and this long journey into the desert will be the last time they are together.

"It's bigger than we thought!!" "How big are we talking…?" Gravitas Ventures has revealed the trailer for an indie horror thriller film titled All Eyes, made by Todd Greenlee and his brother Alex Greenlee as a family venture. This sounds like another wacky, amusing concept for a horror along the lines of so many other indie creations recently. A disgraced podcast host interviews an eccentric farmer who claims to have a monster living in the woods near his house. He arrives to learn he has a plan of trapping and killing the beast, but is something else going on? Starring Jasper Hammer, Ben Hall, Danielle Evon Ploeger, Nick Ballard, Laurie Cummings, and Jeremy Parr. This looks like it could be good, but I wish there was a glimpse of the monster in here. It better not end with "oh wait, this guy was crazy and it was nothing." ›››

Mickey Reece is a filmmaker who, despite having made over 20 movies, has only had one theatrically released. It’s a bit of a sad irony how the timing worked out for Climate of the Hunter, initially screening at Fantastic Fest in 2019 before being delayed until theaters opened up in December last year. But in that messiness, it feels like it got a little lost, like so many great indie films did in the foggy Covid release landscape, though a new streaming home on Shudder has brought it more attention.
Climate of the Hunter, as the title suggests, is an examination of predatory men, personified in the film by Wesley, played with a sinister charm by Ben Hall. Two sisters make up the bulk of the rest of the characters, Alma (Ginger Gilmartin), a woman discharged from a mental institution an unspecified time ago, and Elizabeth (Mary Buss), who works in D.

Writer/director Mickey Reece has flown under the radar somewhat here in the UK but finally his new film, Climate of the Hunter, along with a number of films from his back catalogue are getting a UK release from Bulldog Film Distribution. The film is set in the 70s and is an elegant mix of melodrama and, potentially, vampirism. Sort of like Hush Hush Sweet Charlotte meets Let’s Scare Jessica to Death.
Alma (Ginger Gilmartin; Fingerprints) and Elizabeth are sisters. They’re also totally different. Alma is a recently divorced artist who smokes lots of weed and has a dog who is a philosopher. Elizabeth is a Washington DC lawyer whose career takes the place of a family. They’re at Alma...

"Your house did this to her..." Gravitas Ventures has debuted an official trailer for an indie horror film with a catchy title - Home with a View of the Monster. Alas, the film doesn't look like it will live up to that title. Marking the feature directorial debut of filmmakers Alex Greenlee & Todd Greenlee from Oklahoma, the horror is about home owners who list their secluded lake house on a rental app. They return early to find the renters gone, until the boyfriend with a harrowing story of what happened shows up. "Joining together the haunted house genre with the world of vacation rentals, Home with a View of the Monster provides a gripping glimpse into the lives of individuals who are each as haunted as their surroundings." The film stars Ellen Humphreys, Sebastien Charmant, Jasper Hammer, and Danielle Evon Ploeger. It's hard to even tell what the heck is going on in the trailer,...

Let’s step back in time shall we? If you’re a fan of the 70s and vampires, I’ve got a trailer here for you to watch for an indie horror thriller called Climate of the Hunter. The film is set in the 1970s and is centered around two sisters who are trying to win over the affection of a man who may or may not be a vampire.
As you’ll see, the film has a certain style and tone that gives it the same kind of vibe as some of the vampire horror films that were made in the 70s. It looks like a interesting and weird flick, but I’d watch it. Here’s the synopsis:
Two sisters, Alma & Elizabeth, along with a dog who's described as a "philosopher," have come to Alma's remote house to reconnect with Wesley after twenty years. Alma is recently divorced, Elizabeth is a workaholic in Washington, D.C.

"Mom, you're alone out here." "Then I better get prepared." Xyz Films has debuted an official trailer for an indie horror thriller titled Climate of the Hunter, the latest feature from prolific indie filmmaker Mickey Reece. Set in the late 1970s, two middle-aged sisters vie for the affection of a man from their past who may or may not be a vampire. This just premiered at Fantastic Fest this month, but doesn't have a release yet. Starring Ginger Gilmartin, Mary Buss, Ben Hall, Jacob Snovel, Laurie Cummings, Sheridan McMichael, and Danielle Evon Ploeger. Climate of the Hunter, according to Reece's local online newspaper The Oklahoman, is described as "a visual interpretation of The Jesus and Mary Chain's 1985 debut album, Psychocandy." This looks super low budget and just plain weird. Perhaps exactly the kind a film some of you are looking for. Have fun. Here's the first official trailer (+ ...

Benjamin R. Moody's Last Girl Standing has a trailer, now. The clip shows the survivor of serial killer attack, attempting to adapt to life, after the crisis. The film bills its uniqueness by looking at what happens to a "final girl...who alone manages to survive the carnage." The film stars: Akasha Villalobos (Now Hiring), Danielle Evon Ploeger (Wind & Rain), Brian Villalobos and Jason Vines. The film's first trailer is available here. The story begins with a brutal attack. Camryn (Akasha Villalobos) has lost almost all of her friends, to a brutal serial killer. Five years on, she is still struggling with her losses. Alone and grief-stricken, Camryn is befriended by a new co-worker. But, how can one let their guard down, after so much murder? The life of a final girl, after the attack, has been looked at in Rick Rosenthal's Halloween II (1981). Horror friends will remember...

Icon Film Distribution and FrightFest have announced a further three films – all of which are personal faves of mine from this years festival – which will be released under the curated banner FrightFest Presents. The new titles are:
Night of the Living Deb, directed by Kyle Rankin starring Maria Thayer (Forgetting Sarah Marshall), Michael Cassidy (Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice), Christopher Marquette (Just Friends, The Girl Next Door) and Ray Wise (Infestation, Twin Peaks).
After a girls’ night out, endearingly awkward Deb wakes up in the apartment of the most attractive guy in Portland, Maine. She’s thrilled, but can’t remember much of what got her there. Ryan only knows it was a mistake, and ushers her out the door into a full-scale zombie apocalypse. Now, a walk of shame becomes a fight for survival as the mismatched pair discovers that the only thing scarier than trusting someone with your life…...

Part slasher movie and part character study, Last Girl Standing - the feature debut of Benjamin R. Here's your daily dose of an Indie film in progress -- at the end of the week, you'll have the chance to vote for your favorite. In the meantime: is this a movie you'd want to see? Tell us in the comments. Paper Cuts Tweetable Logline: Wounds may heal, but scars never go away. 'Paper Cuts' tackles eating disorders, cutting, and family in a new feature film. Elevator Pitch: "Paper Cuts" deals with some heavy issues that aren't addressed very often in mainstream cinema. Eating disorders, cutting / self-harm, revenge porn, and convincing the world that everything is okay... even when it's not. Telling the story from a female Pov, 'Paper Cuts' comes from a woman writer, Kelli Horan, and a woman director, Ima Leupp -- a combination that's very rare in today's filmmaking environment. Starring Danielle Evon Ploeger ("Summer League") and Lisa Friedrich ("Meet Me There") with Matthew Palmer ("Inspire Pro") and Brad Silman.

It might seem fitting that a cast and crew of rookies made a film about a beer league softball team, but it is pretty surprising that the resulting film is as strong of a debut as Summer League. Having been deeply embedded in the Austin film community for a few years now, I was admittedly very apprehensive about screening an Austin film with no recognizable names. (I mean, really, what is an Austin film without Jonny Mars, Chris Doubek, John Merriman, Ashley Spillers and Heather Kafka?) Thankfully, though, writer-director Lex Lybrand and his rookie team knock this film way out of the proverbial park. Summer League is an impeccably-made, professional-quality film, from the aforementioned writing and directing to the cinematography (Austin Shaffer) and editing (Lex Lybrand). The impressive production quality is rivaled by the astounding break-out performances of Danielle Ploeger, Kelsey Thomas and Gabriel Peña. I am not sure where...
