Nine films and eight TV projects in contention for top Awgie Awards
Nine features have been nominated for this year's Awgie Awards for performance writing.

Eight telemovies and miniseries are in contention. The Australian Writers. Guild says nominations in the 25 categories for the 48th Annual Awgie Awards reflect the abundance of outstanding work currently being produced in Australia. Nominees for best original telemovie are Steven McGregor for Redfern Now: Promise Me and Katherine Thomson for House of Hancock, while Christopher Lee.s Gallipoli and Jan Sardi and Mac Gudgeon.s The Secret River contend for best adaptation in a television miniseries. Fresh Blood recipients: a new generation of comedy creators
Azio - The Bogan Spy Agency, Crazy Bastards, I'm With Stupid, Fancy Boy, Food for Peasants and Pet Quarantine..judging by some of the titles and synopses , the ABC TV/Screen Australia Fresh Blood initiative will spawn some weird and wonderful comedies.

A mix of puppetry, animation, parodies, improv and absurdist humour, the 25 projects selected will each receive $10,000 to produce three short-form sketches.

The shows will air on ABC.s iView platform this year. ABC controller Brendan Dahill tells If that some may later screen on ABC2 after they premiere on the catch-up service.

The initiative is designed to unearth the next generation of comedy performers and producers. There were 492 applications, many of such a high calibre that the ABC and Screen Australia decided to commission 25, one more than originally planned.

Crushed aims to break the mould for indie films
Writer--director Megan Riakos. psychological thriller Crushed is continuing the rising trend of self-funded Australian films where cast and crew forego fees in return for a share of the profits.

Production wraps in Mudgee, Nsw, on January 17 after a 19-day shoot. The plot follows Elia, a young woman who returns home after her father dies. The death is ruled a murder and her mother becomes the prime suspect.

Sarah Bishop (whose credits include MTV's Deadbeat Dads and web series Skitbox TV and Bondi Hipsters) plays Elia and is serving as one of the producers along with Riakos and Robbie Miles, the La-based development executive at Sam Worthington.s Full Clip Pictures.

Six Aftrs shorts to screen as part of Cinema Des Antipodes at Cannes
Six student short films from the Australian Film Television and Radio School will screen in a specially designated program at the 2012 Cannes Film Festival.

Cinema des Antipodes is an organisation directed by Bernard Bories that screens and supports Australian and New Zealand films in France. Its non-competitive program runs parallel to the Cannes Film Festival main program.

The dedicated Aftrs session consists of six films including writer/director Ben Matthews' Emily, which is currently in the running for a Student Oscar in the Best Foreign Film category. The psychological thriller examines teen suicide from the perspective of a parent.

Meryl Tankard, the creator of the Sydney Olympics opening ceremony also has a film in the program. Moth, which stars Sophie Lowe, is a story inspired by accounts from Australian reform schools in the 60's and 70's..

Deadbeat Dads wins Optus One80 Project
A trailer for a one-hour drama has won the One80 Project for 2012.

Deadbeat Dads, directed by Ben Mathews, co-written and co-produced by Kent Pearson and Shelley McLaren, swept the competition, winning all three major awards; Judges’ Choice, the Public Vote and Best Student Entry last night at Moonlight Cinema.

The competition, sponsored by Optus and MTV, now in its sixth year, invites entrants to submit a three-minute trailer with the winning film receiving $180,000 worth of production budget to produce a one-hour version of the story.

The festival also held the world premiere of the extended version of last year’s winner Sick, written and directed by brothers Connor and Christiaan Van Vuuren. Christiaan is also the Fully Sick Rapper and one half of The Bondi Hipsters.

Sick will premiere on MTV on Sunday 15 April at 9.30pm.

Optus One80Project top 10 finalists announced
.You can have the most whizz-bang camera moves and special effects but unless you have a great idea it.s absolutely meaningless..

So says veteran actor David Wenham, best known for such projects as 300 and Lord of the Rings, and more recently Killing Time.

.I think the most important element in any film or television piece is the idea itself. And it has to be a really unique, original idea..

Content creators need to keep this in mind . particularly those competing for the Optus One80Project crown as Wenham is one of the three main judges. Joining Wenham in his second year as judge is Tomorrow, When The War Began actor Lincoln Lewis and 2010 One80 winner Maia Horniak.
