A string of high-profile figures from the entertainment world attended a march against antisemitism on the streets of London yesterday, in what is thought to be the biggest rally of its kind for nearly 90 years.
The likes of Maureen Lipman, Eddie Marsan and It’s a Sin star Tracy Ann-Oberman were at the march, which is reported to have attracted more than 100,000 people. Others who attended included former Prime Minister Boris Johnson and his wife Carrie Johnson, Countdown host Rachel Riley and comedian David Baddiel. Marsan, Baddiel and Riley were amongst those who addressed the crowds.
Organized by the Campaign Against Antisemitism (CAA), the rally took place to counter heightened concerns over antisemitism among Jewish communities in multiple European countries since the attack on October 7 by Hamas on Israel – which saw the kidnap of 200 civilians and killing of around 1,400 – and the war that has followed.

Carol Vorderman has become the first presenter to leave a BBC role over its new social media guidelines.
The presenter, who is a frequent political poster on X/Twitter, revealed she is leaving her Saturday morning radio show on BBC Radio Wales after five years after — aptly with a social media post.
“The BBC recently introduced new social media guidelines which I respect. However despite my show being lighthearted with no political content, it was explained to me that as it is a weekly show in my name, the new guidelines apply to all and any content that I post all year round,” she wrote.
“since those non-negotiable changes to my radio contract were made, I’ve ultimately found that I’m not prepared to lose my voice on social medial, change who I am, or lose the ability to express the strong beliefs I hold about the political turmoil [the UK] finds itself in.

Countdown star Susie Dent has revealed the identity of two Hollywood stars who “apparently” watch the show.
The long-running Channel 4 game show, which has been on the air since 1982, recently welcomed new presenter Colin Murray. He replaced Anne Robinson.
While promoting his new stint as host, Murray and his co-stars Dent and Rachel Riley were asked about their favourite Dictionary Corner guests, to which Murray named Richard Osman.
Riley opted for Sir Ranulph Fiennes, Chris Packham and Tim Rice, whom she said were “all incredible”.
Dent, who sits next to the dictionary corner celebrity guest, remained hesitant to name one, telling Metro.co.uk it was “impossible to choose”.

Rachel Riley has been made an MBE in the New Year Honours list for her efforts in raising Holocaust awareness and combatting antisemitism.
The Countdown star and mathemetician, whose mother is Jewish, has been honoured for her services to Holocaust education as an avid campaigner.
Riley was a vocal critic of Labour’s handling of alleged antisemitism within the party and Jeremy Corbyn’s conduct while leader.
The 36-year-old Oxford University graduate took over from Carol Vorderman as co-host of Channel 4's Countdown in 2009, after Vorderman stepped down from the role she had held since the show began in 1982.
Her tenure as the resident number cruncher, beginning when she was just 22, has seen her work alongside presenters Jeff Stelling, Nick Hewer, Anne Robinson and Colin Murray.
In January 2019, she made a speech at a Westminster reception for the Holocaust Educational Trust addressing the abuse she received on social media as a public figure.

Frank Skinner has received an MBE in the New Year Honours list for his services to entertainment.
The broadcaster and comedian, 65, began his career in 1987 at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival.
Skinner – whose real name is Christopher Graham Collins – returned to the festival four years later in 1991 and was feted with one of comedy’s most prestigious accolades, the Perrier Award.
Speaking to the Pa news agency, Skinner said that he has held off on telling those closest to him about his MBE in case the news turned out to be the result of “some sort of administrative error”.
“Well, to be honest, I haven’t told anyone at all, even those closest to me, because I still thought there might be some sort of administrative error,” he said.
“But I think it’s brilliant. I deal mainly in laughs and applause and they disappear into the air quite quickly. So...

Stephen Graham and Brian May are among the celebrities to be recognised in the New Year Honours List 2023.
This list marks the first published since the late Queen Elizabeth II’s death in September and the first to be signed off by her son King Charles III. A total of 1,107 recipients, 50 per cent of whom are women, make up this year’s list.
Bafta-winner Graham, best known for his starring role in This is England and The Irishman, is set to receive an OBE, while Queen guitarist Sir Brian “has been appointed a knight bachelor for services to music and charity”.
“I regard it as a kind of charge, like a kind of commission to do the things that one would expect a knight to do – to fight for justice, to fight for people who don’t have any voice,” Sir Brian said of the new award.

John Cleese has been given short shrift on social media after he complained about the BBC not running repeats of Monty Python – after apparently forgetting who owned the licensing rights to the influential comedy show’s library.
While the former six-piece comedy troupe’s popular TV sketch series Monty Python and the Flying Circus originated on BBC in 1969, it was later sold to Netflix in 2019, along with the rest of their movies, collections and specials.
However, this appeared to be news to Cleese, one of Monty Python’s founding members.
“Can anyone (including BBC employees) tell me why the BBC has not shown Monty Python for a couple of decades?” Cleese asked on Twitter, Tuesday 27 December.
Many mocked the controversial comedian for his question, with one responding: “Because they don’t own the license, John Cleese.
“If you’d been brighter, John, you’d have retained your own rights, but you’re not,...

David Baddiel has revealed that, in his new documentary Jews Don’t Count, he apologises to former footballer Jason Lee for impersonating him in blackface in the Nineties.
Baddiel and fellow comic Frank Skinner once had a BBC show called Fantasy Football League, in which they ridiculed footballers.
Much of their mockery was directed at Lee, the Black Nottingham Forest player. Baddiel would portray Lee as dim-witted, with a pineapple on top of his head to imitate Lee’s hairstyle. Skinner would put on a strong Northern accent to portray Lee’s then-manager, Frank Clark.
At one point, Baddiel wore blackface when depicting Lee.
Speaking on Good Morning Britain on Thursday (17 November), Baddiel said: “I shamefully impersonated Jason Lee in blackface 25 years ago on Fantasy Football, and I felt that it was important, if I’m going to do a documentary about Jewish representation and minorities, that I should go...

As the UK heads back to the voting booths tomorrow to elect a government, film and TV stars have been declaring allegiances.
Polls have consistently pointed to a Conservative win at the general election, though a final major survey this morning predicted only a slim victory for the Tories over Labour. Brexit and the National Health Service have been the major campaigning points throughout.
Hugh Grant has been among the most vocal celebrity canvassers, urging the public to vote tactically to avoid a Conservative majority. The Four Weddings And A Funeral star took to the streets last week with Labour and Liberal Democrat politicians.
Grant was asked this week about Conservative leader Boris Johnson recreating a scene from Love Actually as part of his campaign. “I thought it was quite well done, very high production values, but clearly the Conservative Party have an awful lot of money. Maybe that’s where the rubles went.

Soccer Aid for Unicef 2019, broadcast live and exclusively on ITV and Stv this week, has raised a record-breaking £6,774,764 so far – over £1m more than last year’s on the night total – for Unicef’s vital work keeping children around the world happy, healthy and safe to play.
This amount was raised thanks to the generous support of the UK public, ITV and Stv viewers, and the UK government who have matched all donations so far, doubling the difference made to children’s lives. This figure has smashed all previous records for money raised on the night.
The eagerly anticipated match took place in London for the first time in over a decade, packing out Chelsea’s Stamford Bridge Stadium with a whopping 39,836 in attendance. The match ended in a 2-2 draw, leading to a nail-biting penalty shoot-out for the second year in a row, with the Soccer Aid World XI...

Matt Le Tissier was on Countdown today (September 30), and he surprised a lot of people by winning with an impressive 105 points.
He was joined by fellow ex-footballer Graeme Le Saux, who was in Dictionary Corner.
Here's a selection of some of the online bafflement that accompanied the appearances:

Watching Matt Le Tissier as a contestant on Countdown is like watching Robbie Savage being asked to conduct an orchestra. Really odd.

Countdown's Rachel Riley can't help but see the innuendo in everything after her latest unfortunate letter arrangement.
Co-star Susie Dent amused Riley and fans of the Channel 4 show with her latest Word of the Day, introducing her Twitter followers to the word 'jirble'.
Before you ask, she didn't misspell the name of a small rodent. According to Dent, "to jirble is to spill liquid as the result of clumsy hands".
Riley immediately decided to turn Dent's tweet into something rude, and fans then decided to insert 'jirble' into their own filthy sentences.
One wrote: "My dad said if I was to jerble I'd go blind and lose my hair. He was half right. (sic)"
To jirble is to spill liquid as the result of clumsy hands: e.g. I've just jirbled tea all over the duvet. Morning.

Countdown never fails to impress with its unfortunate letter arrangements - and the latest sees Rachel Riley squirm her way through a round when 'slutz' appears on the board.
Things start out innocently enough when Riley reveals the first few letters, but the host gives an awkward look to camera when 'slut' is spelled out.
Oops. Another unfortunate word popped up on yesterday's episode of Countdown http://go.dspy.me/cB8b

Thinking the worst is over, another consonant gets added to the board, but an unfortunate 'z' leaves Riley in a hurry to get through the round.
"Let's speed this along," Riley tells Nick Hewer.
Other inappropriate words giving Countdown viewers the giggles have included 'todgers', 'itchy semi', 'arse' and 'erection' - which has popped up on more than one occasion.
Earlier this year, Myleene Klass found the word 'gobs**te', which...

We saw a glimpse of Princess Charlotte's christening over the weekend, but now, we're getting to see the official portraits from the event! Shot by Mario Testino, the photos show the royal family looking gorgeous at the fancy family affair. Like her older brother George, Charlotte was dressed for the occasion in a replica of the intricate lace-and-satin christening gown made for Queen Victoria's eldest daughter, Victoria, in 1841. Meanwhile, Prince George was clearly inspired by his dad, Prince William, on Sunday. The two-year-old heir looked adorable in a Rachel Riley collared white shirt with red embroidery, which he paired with red shorts with white button details, white socks and black dress shoes. His father wore almost the same ensemble, with a slightly different patterned shirt, when he stepped out in September 1984 to meet his new baby brother, Prince Harry, for the first time. The ceremony was private — Queen Elizabeth,...

Seeing double! Prince George was clearly inspired by his dad, Prince William, at sister Princess Charlotte's christening ceremony on Sunday. His father wore almost the same ensemble, with a slightly different patterned shirt, when he stepped out in September 1984 to meet his new baby brother, Prince Harry, for the first time. Check out the side-by-side pics above to see the cute comparison! George isn't the only member of the royal family to keep things traditional. Charlotte wore the same christening gown as George ... and was baptized at St. Mary Magdalene Church, the same place where William's late mother, Princess Diana, was christened. Kate Middleton even used a Millson stroller that once belonged to Queen Elizabeth, which she used about...
