- In 2004, on a J1 Visa while working in America, David was struck by lightning in South Boston and left paralyzed. He recovered in The Boston Medical Centre, moving down to West Palm Beach to recover from the accident, where he learned how to walk again. After many years of rehab, David wrote his first play about his lightning strike "5 Nights" which has performed to sell out runs in 2008 and the famous Electric Picnic Boutique Festival.
- In 2012 David Gilna sold his first film option to World Picture Films.
- In 2013 David Gilna optioned rights to Blue Pip Productions. A feature film adaption is to be based on his original stage play the Gift of Lightning.
- In 2014 David Gilna's play My Bedsit Window was translated in Italian by Alberto Albertino and staged at the world famous Teatro Elettra in Rome.
