Neil Young Is Still Rolling Through Time on the Lovably Messy ‘Talkin to the Trees’
Image
Time fades away, but Neil Young never does. He’s been on a like-a-hurricane live roll lately with his ferocious new band the Chrome Hearts, who make their studio debut on Talkin to the Trees. The band came together fast last year, after Neil’s amazing spring tour with his old outlaw pals in Crazy Horse. Since Ralph Molina and Billy Talbot are both over 80, Neil was one of the youngest dudes in his own band — he’s still a spring chicken of 79. Health issues ended the tour early, almost exactly a year ago,...

What It’s Really Like to Face Off With a Grizzly — and Live to Tell the Tale
Image
The grizzly swung with its massive right paw. In a desperate attempt to protect his head, Jon Bentzel raised his left arm above him like a karate block and ducked, bracing for the impact of the enormous, fur-lined paw. The bear clubbed him, rattled his dome, hit his wristwatch, and then straddled him. Bentzel thought he was going to die and hoped it would be quick. The force shook him to his core.

Bentzel had on his backpack and was lying in the fetal position, screaming bloody murder at the top of his lungs — petrified,...

Neil Young Takes Direct Aim at Tesla on New Single ‘Let’s Roll Again’
Image
Six days after previewing the song at the semi-annual Light Up The Blues charity show, Neil Young has officially released “Let’s Roll Again” from his upcoming LP Talkin’ To the Trees, which arrives June 13. It may sound like a sequel to his 2002 September 11 song “Let’s Roll,” but it’s actually a plea for auto manufacturers to act responsibly and create more electric vehicles.

“C’mon Ford, C’mon Gm,” he sings. “C’mon Chrysler, let’s roll again/Build somethin’ useful, people need/Build us a safe way...

Titled Talkin to the Trees, the album serves as the group’s debut LP together and will arrive on June 13th via The Other Shoe/Reprise. Willie Nelson’s 2025 Luck Reunion Was Like No Place on Earth
Image
“Everybody’s just in the best mood and it gets better and better throughout the day,” I overheard a fan say Thursday afternoon at the 2025 Luck Reunion. His observation was spot-on. For its 13th year, the boutique festival held on Willie Nelson’s Luck Ranch in Spicewood, Texas — just outside of Austin, as the song goes — proved to be unlike any music fest on earth.

With stages set up in and around the Old West buildings that dot the grounds, a movie set where Nelson filmed his 1984 Western Red Headed Stranger,...

neil young and the chrome hearts Unleash Rocking Single “big change”: Stream
Image
Neil Young recently teamed up with Micah Nelson, Spooner Oldham, and Promise of the Real’s Corey McCormick and Anthony Logerfo for a new band dubbed neil young and the chrome hearts, and today, the group has unveiled their debut single, “big change.”

Co-produced by Young and Lou Adler, “big change” is a guitar-driven, hard-hitting rock song with politically-charged lyrics forewarning listeners of the titular “change,” which “could be bad” or “could be great,” according to Young’s impassioned wail. Underneath, the power of the band comes together with a raw, uproarious energy, conveying the urgency of the times with a timeless, familiar grit.

Stream “big change” below.

After collaborating with Micah Nelson (Willie Nelson’s son) for several years, Young debuted the chrome hearts project at Farm Aid last year. Now, the band is expected to tour in 2025, but no dates have been confirmed, with the exception of Glastonbury 2025 — which Young pulled out of,...

Neil Young Reverses Himself, Agrees to Headline Glastonbury

Just two days after labeling Glastonbury a “corporate turn-off” and pulling out of the UK festival before the 2025 lineup was even announced, Neil Young has reversed himself and will indeed be one of the headliners.

“Due to an error in the information received, I had decided to not play the Glastonbury festival,” Young wrote on the Neil Young Archives, “which I have always loved. Happily, the festival is back on our itinerary and we look forward to playing! Hope to see there there!”

Neil Young Will Play Glastonbury in 2025 After All, Decision to Pull Out Was an “Error”
Image
Neil Young has reversed course and decided to play the Glastonbury Music Festival in 2025 after all.

Earlier this week, the legendary musician announced that he had pulled out of appearance at the UK festival, citing concerns that the event has taken a “corporate turn.” He cited Glastonbury’s ties to the BBC and them wanting “us to do a lot of things in a way that we were not interested in.”

However, in a new statement posted to his official website on Friday, Young explained that the information he had received was “an error” and “the festival is now back on our itinerary and we look forward to playing! Hope to see you there!”

In her own statement, Glastonbury organizer Emily Eavis confirmed that Young would be headlining the festival’s Pyramid stage. “What a start to the year! Neil Young is an artist who’s very close to our hearts at Glastonbury.

Neil Young Pulls Out of Glastonbury 2025 Due to Festival’s “Corporate Turn”
Image
Update: Neil Young has decided to play Glastonbury in 2025 after all, saying that his initial decision to pull out of the festival was “an error.”

Neil Young has withdrawn from his scheduled appearance at the UK’s Glastonbury Music Festival in 2025, citing concerns that the legendary event has taken a “corporate turn.”

The musician’s issues with Glastonbury apparently stem from its ties with the BBC. In a note posted to his website, Neil Young Archives, Young wrote, “We were told that the BBC was now a partner in Glastonbury and wanted us to do a lot of things in a way that we were not interested in. it seems Glastonbury is now under corporate control and is not the way i remember it way being.”

“We will not be playing Glastonbury on this tour because it is a corporate turn – off, and not for me like it used to be,...

Neil Young Pulls Out of Glastonbury: ‘It Is a Corporate Turn-Off’

The 10 Best Rock Concerts of 2024
Image
The world may have devolved into a cruel, dark, Hobbesian state of nature in 2024, but it was a pretty amazing time for live rock music. The Rolling Stones and Bruce Springsteen & the E Street Band were in stadiums, Pearl Jam, Weezer, David Gilmour, and Olivia Rodrigo headlined arenas, Neil Young and Crazy Horse hit the shed circuit, and Yes cut itself in half and still managed to out-prog all their competitors at theaters and amphitheaters all over the country.

I saw a lot of rock concerts over the past 12 months,...

Why Neil Young Will Never Give Up on the Road
Image
This week Neil Young did two amazing club shows at the Capitol Theatre in Port Chester, New York, with his new band the Chrome Hearts. He began both nights with “I’m the Ocean,” one of his fiercest songs, from the 1995 Pearl Jam collaboration Mirror Ball. “People my age, they don’t do the things I do” — that was a great line when he was on the edge of turning 50, but it’s a whole other experience hearing him snarl it now at 78. On Monday night he sang that verse twice,...

Watch Neil Young and the Chrome Hearts Play Epic 13-Minute ‘Down by the River’

Two days after making their debut at Farm Aid, Neil Young and the Chrome Hearts played their first headlining show Monday night at the Capitol Theatre in Port Chester, New York. The 14-song set mixed gentle acoustic songs (“Come a Time,” “Journey Through the Past”) with wild, Crazy Horse-style electric numbers (“Big Time,” “Powderfinger,” “I’m the Ocean”) heavy on jams.

The highlight was an epic “Down by the River” that spanned 13 minutes, featuring extended guitar interplay between Young and Micah Nelson. The band also featured organist Spooner Oldham, drummer Anthony LoGerfo,...

Hear Willie Nelson’s Tom Waits Cover Ahead of Album That Finds Him ‘Facing Death With Grace’

The announcement of Willie Nelson’s 76th studio album, Last Leaf on the Tree, comes with good news and better news. The good news is that the lead single is Nelson’s cover of Tom Waits’ “Last Leaf,” a track that Waits cut with Keith Richards for 2011’s Bad as Me. The better news is that Nelson sings it à la Nelson and doesn’t attempt a gravel-throated Waits impression. Instead, Nelson’s rendition features impressionistic guitar ear candy, a little accordion, and drums that sigh along with Nelson as...

Neil Young’s Latest Archival Release Puts the Late, Great Danny Whitten Front and Center
Image
Before Micah Nelson, before Nils Lofgren, and before Frank “Poncho” Sampedro, there was Danny Whitten. The original Crazy Horse guitarist died over 50 years ago, but the mark he made on Neil Young and the band persists to this day. Just watch this clip from the recent, now-suspended tour, where Nelson sings backup on “Cinnamon Girl.” Those harmonies — simultaneously honeyed and gravelly, providing just enough support without overshadowing, yet so powerful and full of potential — echoes Whitten. He’s the spirit of Crazy Horse that never really went away.

Neil Young and Crazy Horse’s Tour Is a Tribute to a Titan From Their Past

Neil Young and Crazy Horse are about halfway through their North American tour, and there’s already a strong fan consensus that this is their best run in recent memory, perhaps even going back to the Nineties grunge era they helped kickstart. A big factor at play is the addition of guitarist Micah Nelson, who has deep respect for the material and an uncanny ability to emulate the distinct styles of both Danny Whitten and Frank “Poncho” Sampedro, his two main predecessors in the band.

Just two years away from his 80th birthday,...

Neil Young and Crazy Horse Are Unearthing Their ‘Early Daze’ on New Archival LP
Image
Shortly after the dissolution of Buffalo Springfield in 1968, Neil Young teamed up with the core members of struggling L.A. rock band the Rockets, renamed them Crazy Horse, and spent the next five decades working alongside them. Their first record was 1969’s Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere, featuring classics like “Down By The River” and “Cowgirl In The Sand.”

But their early recording sessions produced a lot more music than the seven songs on Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere, and Young is finally sharing this music on June 28 with the release of Early Daze.

Neil Young Stuns at 2024 Tour Launch, Unveils Lost ‘Cortez the Killer’ Verse

Micah Nelson on Joining Neil Young and Crazy Horse: ‘I’ve Been Rehearsing for This My Whole Life’

From a certain perspective, Micah Nelson’s entire life has been building up to the Neil Young and Crazy Horse tour this summer, where he’ll be taking over for Nils Lofgren as the group’s new guitarist. As the youngest son of Willie Nelson, Micah, 33, has been exposed to Young’s catalog for longer than he can even remember. “Neil’s music always sort of being around in the periphery,” he tells Rolling Stone. “I grew up going to Farm Aid every year, so he was always this sort of figure,...

Willie Nelson Performs “I Never Cared for You” on Colbert: Watch
Image
Willie Nelson stopped by The Late Show with Stephen Colbert on Wednesday night to perform “I Never Cared for You.” The track appears on Nelson’s upcoming greatest hits collection, which is set to drop this Friday — just ahead of his long overdue induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.

The Red Headed Stranger took the stage with a full band (including his son and frequent collaborator Micah Nelson) and gave a spirited rendition of the 1964 song. His delivery added an extra bite to lyrics like, “Your heart has been forewarned all men will lie to you.” Replay the full performance below.

Nelson has a long history with Colbert dating back to the latter’s years on The Colbert Report. Back in 2008, Nelson and Colbert channeled David Bowie and Bing Crosby on an original song called “Little Dealer Boy” for A Colbert Christmas: The Greatest Gift of All!

Willie Nelson Turns 90: Keith Richards Joins Hollywood Bowl Bash
Image
Just call them the Rolling Stoners.

You know you are music royalty when Keith Richards shows up to pay his respects. And the Rolling Stones icon was on hand Sunday for the second and final night of Willie Nelson’s epic, 90th birthday concert at the Hollywood Bowl.

At 79, Richards was the youngster in this pairing of living legends, and the two harmonized sweetly on two songs: Waylon Jennings’ “We Had It All” and the late outlaw Billy Joe Shaver’s “Live Forever,” particularly poignant with its refrain, “Just like the songs I leave behind me / I’m gonna live forever, now.”

The Richards surprise came shortly after 10:00 p.m. on this cool, overcast night in the hills above Hollywood, nearly three-and-a-half hours into the evening’s celebration.

Earlier in the set, giant plumes of smoke were projected against the Bowl bandshell as Jack Johnson regaled the...
