NCIS: Origins returned with a midseason winter premiere that gave us some insights into Mike Franks’ background. It was our first look into who Franks was before he became an NCIS agent and it made for a fun episode to watch, despite the heartbreaking case the team was looking into.

Normally we get to see the show focus on Austin Stowell’s Agent Gibbs, but it was Kyle Schmid’s time to shine. When Mike’s well-worn favorite boots broke, it looked like it was going to be a lost cause and he wouldn’t be able to wear them anymore.

We learned he received the boots from his older brother, Mason. They lived with his mother on a ranch and it seemed as though they were very close. Throughout the episode, the audience learned that Mike was drafted and Mason was ready to figure out how to keep his brother from going overseas.

NCIS: Origins is the latest entrant into the NCIS world, but contrary to previous spinoffs, the show has a strong connection to the flagship series.

Watching it peel back layers into Gibbs’ past life has been fun, especially since it breaks away from the basic procedural format and enriches this beloved world.

NCIS: Origins is fun because viewers have sentimental value for Gibbs, filling the hole left by the character’s departure in the main series.

It’s also refreshing to watch a show that is not set in the current times, where law enforcement must do good old-fashioned investigations by following the evidence.

It seems like the show is doing the smart thing and giving audiences what they want, and that’s more of fan-favorite Mike Franks. Can you blame us? The mustache alone makes the character iconic.

Still, as far as episodes go, this was probably the weakest one of NCIS: Origins. I’m not saying it was bad, but this one was light on the drama compared to earlier episodes.

Sure, there are standard rescues of those who drift a little too far out to sea or get tossed about by a wave and pulled down by the unrelenting current.

The story itself seems pretty cut and dry. Holmes left Watson a bunch of money so the doctor could return to medicine. It’s all very straightforward, which is exactly what Sherlock Holmes is Not known for.

Growing up is challenging, especially for teenage girls. This aspect has not changed in 100 years, and it was likely more difficult back then.

When Calls the Heart Season 12 Episode 4 was one of the best installments. It highlighted Allie’s coming-of-age and why it was so important to her.

I’ve commented previously that this season has returned us to the best part of the series, focusing on integrating the children into core storylines and keeping romances at the forefront.

Exclusive: Caleb Foote has been upped from a recurring guest star to a series regular on the CBS series NCIS: Origins.

Foote plays Nis Special Agent Bernard ‘Randy’ Randolf as part of the core Nis unit. Randy is the agency’s all too lovable, dapper golden boy, tasked with showing the newly minted Agent Gibbs (Austin Stowell) the ropes.

NCIS: Origins follows a young Leroy Jethro Gibbs in 1991, years prior to the events of NCIS. In the series, Gibbs starts his career as a newly minted special agent at the fledgling NCIS Camp Pendleton office, where he forges his place on a gritty, ragtag team led by NCIS legend Mike Franks (Kyle Schmid).

Along with the late David McCallum, Mark Harmon is arguably the actor who's most commonly associated with the "NCIS" franchise. His character, Leroy Jethro Gibbs, debuted on "Jag" before gracing 19 seasons of "NCIS." As of this writing, Gibbs is also the only character to receive his own prequel series, which we'll cover in more detail later. In short, though, Harmon is a poster child for this franchise, and that's why fans were shocked when he parted ways with the hit procedural in 2021.

NCIS has been one of the biggest success stories in TV history, but like the countless other long-running shows still on the air, it’s showing its age.

The CBS procedural has slumped to around 5.2 million viewers and a 0.36 rating among adults 18-49 this season.

That number means it ranks seventh out of the 16 scripted series the network has scheduled this season.

With a week of DVR factored in, NCIS Season 22’s numbers rise to 7.6 million viewers and a 0.52 rating, but the show is off over 20% compared to last year.

That means that there’s a genuine possibility that CBS could be considering putting the mothership out to pasture.

There was much enthusiasm for NCIS: Origins because it would bring Gibbs back to the franchise years after Mark Harmon walked away.

There’s no denying that Gibbs was the draw of NCIS for many years, and while the show has bounced back creatively in his absence, he’s still a missing piece of the puzzle.

There are so many pivotal elements that go into nailing a successful show, and one of those is having likable characters. Luckily, NCIS: Origins has plenty to work with in Mike Franks.

Harmon would be a consistent presence on the show in the prequel NCIS: Origins, where he serves as one of the series’ producers. The veteran actor is also the voice of the show, narrating the series. The character of Tobias Fornell (played by Joe Spano) was part of the very first episode of NCIS, but without a history with any of the team then. That was retconned as Spano kept appearing, with Fornell and Mark Harmon‘s Gibbs ending up going way back. And so the prequel, NCIS: Origins, has a rich history with which to play with Austin Stowell‘s Gibbs and the young Fornell (Lucas Dixon), who has now been introduced. Actor Austin Stowell plays Young Gibbs, while Mark Harmon is the narrator. We have even seen Harmon appear as the Older Gibbs several times.

The fall finale (some are calling it the winter finale) featured Gibbs preparing for his first Christmas without his wife and daughter.

The Christmas episode of NCIS: Origins was Blue Bayou and served as Season 1, Episode 10 of the Monday night drama.
