Watch Dogs is the latest video game franchise to receive a live-action adaptation. Ubisoft partnered with Columbia Pictures and New Regency for this ambitious endeavor, and the gaming community is rightfully skeptical about this franchise being translated from a video game to a film. Director Mathieu Turi recently announced the project has wrapped filming at an impressive rate.

Most adaptations are not well-received by the gaming community and critics alike. Hopefully, this adaptation will not suffer the same fate as other failed Ubisoft franchises like the Assassin’s Creed movie years ago.
The Live-Action Adaptation of Watch Dogs Has Officially Wrapped Filming
The gaming community was surprised to learn the live-action project is not dead in the water and the producers found the leads in The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbird and Snakes star Tom Blyth and Sophie Wilde.

Production has begun on a film adaptation of the cybercrime videogame series Watch Dogs – over a decade after it was first announced.
After more than a decade in development, shooting has finally begun on Watch Dogs, the film adaptation of Ubisoft’s series of open-world hacking videogames.
The announcement comes directly from Ubisoft itself, which broke the news on X/Twitter/Muskbook with a photograph of a clapperboard and the caption ‘Lights_Camera_Action.exe’.

Ubisoft’s free-roam sci-fi action-adventure game series Watch Dogs has received mixed reviews from critics and players alike. The game did have an interesting premise, but some felt it didn’t break out of the Ubisoft open-world formula enough to stand out among other games like Assassin’s Creed and Far Cry.
It seems the potential of the series has been noticed by people outside of the gaming community as well. It’s common for popular franchises to get adapted into other media, and the same is happening with a live-action movie for Watch Dogs. But is Ubisoft taking on more than it can handle?
The Watch Dogs Movie will be Created by New Regency
A Watch Dogs adaptation may not be the best idea for Ubisoft currently.
Deadline was the first to report on this matter. The movie will reportedly feature Sophie Wilde, who debuted in A24’s Talk to Me...

Few fears are more universal than claustrophobia. Many of us have probably experienced that twinge of anxiety when elevator doors close behind us, but few of us have likely ever been down in the depths of a coal mine, where the elements at play have a potentially fatal outcome. This fear is what writer/director Mathieu Turi tries to tap into in The Deep Dark, to moderately successful results.

"A Plague Tale," a beautiful and horrifying game by Focus Home Interactive, is getting the TV show treatment. Director Mathieu Turi announced the news on Twitter yesterday with a link to French website Allocine, and it was later confirmed via IGN.
On paper, "A Plague Tale" doesn't sound like an easy story to adapt, as it's at once a harrowing and emotional historical story and a supernatural thriller. Also, there are lots and lots of rats. The game is a visual stunner, though, with striking art design that means Turi and his team have their work cut out for them.

Of the claustrophobic thrillers inspired by the 1998 cult classic, “Cube,” “Meander” might just be the greatest and most realistic. That realism is part of what makes this movie work because, as directed by Mathieu Turi, the film gives the audience the feeling of being trapped in a tight and confined space. And that feeling is as thrillingly unpleasant as it is a sweaty-palmed nightmare.

Photo: 'Meander'/Gravitas Ventures Officially, the closest I've ever come to being buried alive is watching director Mathieu Turi's 'Meander'. A suffocating and claustrophobic experience, Turi’s new sci-fi horror is a puzzling narrative from start to finish, and is a story that presents as much of a cerebral challenge to the viewer as the many life-threatening obstacles that surround its ill-fated protagonist. At first, 'Meander' is almost uncomfortably familiar. It feels cut from the same cloth as 'Cube' and the 'Saw' franchise, except with less authentic texture and even wilder plots that attempt to dull all senses of logic. "You're stuck in a pipe full of deadly traps. How far will you go?" Gravitas Ventures has unveiled an official US trailer for a French sci-fi thriller titled Meander, another Cube-inspired stuck-in-rooms genre movie. This premiered at the Sitges Film Festival last year, and also played at the Trieste Science+Fiction Festival and Monster Fest. A woman wakes up locked in series of strange tubes full of deadly traps. Every 8 minutes, she must move forward or die. But why? Is there any escape? That's the premise for this one - which is a lot like Cube, but with a few diuniqurfferent aspects. Starring Gaia Weiss as Lisa, with Peter Franzén and Romane Libert. This gets very strange with some weird zombies and freaky stuff. I'm sold! Need to see it. Here's the official US trailer (+ poster) for Mathieu Turi's Meander, direct from YouTube (via B-d): You wake up.

Gravitas Ventures has acquired North American rights to Meander, a horror thriller written and directed by Mathieu Turi. It will now get a July 9, 2021 release date in theaters and on on-demand platforms.
The film stars Gaïa Weiss, Peter Franzen and Romane Libert. Weiss plays Lisa, who after getting a car ride from an unknown man wakes up in a tube. On her arm is strapped a bracelet with a countdown. She quickly understands that every 10 minutes, fire burns an occupied section. She has no choice but to crawl into safe sections to survive. To know why she’s there and how to get out, she will have to face the memories of her dead daughter.
“Gravitas is thrilled to be able to present audiences with one of the best new additions to the sci-fi and horror genres in the past decade,” said Brett Rogalsky, Gravitas Ventures’ acquisitions manager. “What Mathieu...

Meander is sci-fi horror thriller. In production since 2020, this title involves a woman who is kidnapped. Strangely, she finds herself trapped in a series of pipes, with little time to escape each section. This film has been developed by Mathieu Turi (Hostile). As well, Meander stars Gaia Weiss ("Vikings") and Peter Franzen (The Gunman). More story details have been released for the film, along with two early stills. A longer synopsis mentions a fire burning in a series of pipes. The protagonist only has eight minutes to escape each length, before fire burns the section. Lisa must crawl her way to safer sections, while confronting memories of her dead daughter. The two new stills show Lisa in frame. In one still, she looks at her daughter, with little light. In another, Lisa is navigating the system of pipes, in search of a way out. Both stills focus on few characters and a tight squeeze.

San Sebastian — Smart genre, zombies and throwbacks to the ’70s and ‘80s are some of the current trends in genre cinema, according to some specialists in the field. It’s a cyclical dynamic now offering meaningful box office hits such as Corin Hardy’s “The Nun” or Ari Aster’s “Hereditary.” Genre cinema always attracts the attention of industry players. These are some of them.
An auteur-driven trend commands greatest consensus among experts. Matteo Lovadina, CEO of Paris-based sales and co-production company Reel Suspects, observed that some great examples recently of genre film have, “thanks to their clever storytelling,” been able to attract both auteur and genre audiences.
“Films like Joachim Trier’s ‘Thelma,’ Jordan Peele’s ‘Get Out’, David Robert Mitchell’s ‘It Follows’ or ‘Hereditary,’ have brought genre cinema again into focus and restored a certain credit to this hidden part of the cinematic world,” Lovadina observed.

Mathieu Turi's debut feature may have just released yesterday from Sony Pictures, but he's far from a newbie. In fact, the French director has been working behind the scenes of many huge franchise films for years, including G.I. Joe, Tarantino's Inglorious Basterds and Guy Ritchie's Sherlock Holmes films, to name a few. But after years of being assistant to the assistant, Turi knew he needed to make the leap into directing his own material and so took the plunge after meeting producer Xavier Gens. He pitched a few ideas and Hostile, a post-apocalyptic chamber piece of sorts, won out for its high-concept and low budget, and he was quickly off to the races. I had the chance to speak with Turi about...

Stranded in a car wreck in a post-apocalyptic wasteland, Juliette (Brittany Ashworth) has to fend off a strange creature who isn't interested in giving her a hand in Hostile. With the new horror movie out now on VOD platforms and DVD from 4Digital Media, we caught up with writer/director Mathieu Turi to discuss combining genres, the influence of Richard Matheson's I Am Legend, and working with Javier Botet.
Thanks for taking the time to answer some questions for us, Mathieu. How and when did you first come up with the idea for Hostile?
Mathieu Turi: I previously did two short films, Sons of Chaos (2010), a post-apocalyptic/action/creature short which received official selection in multiple film festivals around the world and officially competed at Sitges in 2011. The second film, Broken (2012), is a love story/drama set in an elevator. So, in a way, Hostile is a mix of the two short films.
