Music Box Films’ genre label Doppelgänger Releasing has acquired North American distribution rights to director Alex Thompson’s thriller “Rounding” from world sales company Visit Films.

The tense and chilling sophomore feature debuted in 2022 at the Tribeca Film Festival and screened at the Chicago Film Festival. Doppelgänger Releasing will open “Rounding” on Jan. 3 in select theaters. The film will hit digital platforms on Feb. 18.

“Rounding” stars Namir Smallwood (“American Rust”), Sidney Flanigan (“Never Rarely Sometimes Always”), Michael Potts, and Tony Award-winning director David Cromer.

After a traumatic experience while treating an elderly patient near the end of her life, resident doctor James Hayman (Smallwood) transfers to a rural hospital in Greenville, Illinois, for the second year of his residency for a fresh start. The play is scheduled to begin previews at the Winter Garden Theatre on March 12, 2025, with an opening night set for April 3. Clooney will also make his Broadway debut in the play, which is currently scheduled to run through June 8. Additional casting has yet to be announced.

The Winter Garden venue will be available as of January, with the recently-announced closing of the Back the the Future musical.

The Drama League Awards unveiled their slate of winners at an in-person ceremony on Friday, May 17. The event was hosted by Frank Dilella at the Ziegfeld Ballroom, where attendees toasted the best of Broadway and Off-Bradway.

George Clooney will star as legendary newsman Edward R. Murrow in a Broadway adaptation of Good Night, and Good Luck.

Clooney wrote, directed and starred in the 2005 historical drama about Murrow’s coverage of Senator Joseph McCarthey’s anti-communist tribunals in the 1950s. The film was nominated for six Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director.

Two decades later, Clooney and co-screenwriter Grant Heslov have reunited to bring the story to stage. David Cromer will direct the production, which will debut next spring at a Shubert Theatre.

George Clooney will make his Broadway acting and playwriting debut next spring in a stage adaptation of his 2005 film about journalist Edward R. Murrow.

In the play, which is also entitled Good Night, and Good Luck, Clooney will play Murrow as he pushes executives at CBS to allow him to continue to deliver critical reporting on U.S. Senator Joseph McCarthy’s anti-communist efforts. Clooney wrote the Broadway play with Grant Heslov, who co-wrote the screenplay with Clooney.

Winners of the 2024 Lucille Lortel Awards, honoring outstanding achievements in Off-Broadway theater, were announced on Sunday, May 5, in a ceremony at NYU Skirball. The show was hosted by Rosalind Chao, Jen Colella, Michael Esper, 2024 Tony nominee Eden Espinosa (“Lempicka”), 2024 Tony nominee Nikki M. James (“Suffs”) and Bd Wong. The Lucille Lortel Awards are produced by the Off-Broadway League and Lucille Lortel Theatre, with additional support provided by Tdf.

It was a banner evening for Ars Nova. Not only did the theater company receive an honorary award for Best Body of Work, their show “(pray)” was also the top winner of the night. This co-production with National Black Theatre took home three trophies including Best Musical, Best Director for NicHi douglas and Best Ensemble.

Roundabout Theatre Company has announced the dates for its 2024-25 season, with David Henry Hwang’s Yellow Face starring Daniel Dae Kim kicking off the company’s Broadway line-up with an October 1 opening night.

The previously announced Broadway productions also include English by Sanaz Toossi, opening January 23, 2025; and The Pirates of Penzance, reimagined with a New Orleans setting and starring Ramin Karimloo and David Hyde Pierce, opening April 24, 2025.

All the company’s Broadway productions will play at the Todd Haimes Theatre.

The musical, which tells the bizarre true story of a turn-of-the-20th-century outlaw whose corpse became a mummified side-show attraction for decades, will begin previews on Wednesday, February 28 ahead of a Sunday, March 10 opening night at Audible’s Off Broadway Minetta Lane Theatre.

The limited engagement runs through Sunday, April 7, and will be recorded and released on Audible at a later date.

Daniel Dae Kim will return to Broadway this fall in the Roundabout Theatre Company’s production of David Henry Hwang’s comedy Yellow Face, to be directed by Tony Award nominee Leigh Silverman (Violet).

The production marks the Broadway premiere of Hwang’s play, an Obie Award winner and Pulitzer Prize finalist that originated in 2007 at Los Angeles’ Mark Taper Forum and subsequently opened that year Off Broadway at the Joseph Papp Public Theater.

The production, announced today as part of the Roundabout’s 2024-2025 season, will begin performances this September at the Roundabout’s Todd Haimes Theatre. Kim made his Broadway debut as the King of Siam in Lincoln Center’s Tony-winning 2017 production of The King and I. The Lost actor next be seen as the villainous Fire Lord Ozai in Netflix’s live-action adaptation of Avatar: The Last Airbender, premiering in February.

Daniel Dae Kim will star in the Broadway premiere of David Henry Hwang’s Yellow Face next season.

The play, which is inspired by real events, follows a playwright protesting the casting of white actors playing Asian roles in Miss Saigon, and then mistakenly casting a white actor as an Asian lead in his own play. Yellow Face, directed by Leigh Silverman, is scheduled to start previews at what will be the newly renamed Todd Haimes Theatre (formerly the American Airlines Theatre but renamed after the death of the Roundabout Theatre Company’s artistic director) in September 2024.

When medical resident James (Namir Smallwood) is assigned an acting class to improve his bedside manner, he bristles at the idea, describing it as “dishonest.” The teacher (David Cromer) gently pushes back. “Don’t your patients lie sometimes?” he asks. “They might,” James replies. “Their bodies usually don’t.”

The irony is that James will spend the bulk of Rounding obsessed with the idea that one specific body might be, if not lying, at least telling less than a complete truth — all while his own body betrays the fictions he tells himself, namely that he’s totally fine and in control. Those tensions make for a tense, occasionally terrifying thriller that’s hard to look away from, though what it’s ultimately trying to accomplish with all that energy isn’t always so clear.

Samuel D. Hunter’s A Case for the Existence of God was named best play of the 2021-22 season today by the the New York Drama Critics’ Circle, with David Lindsay-Abaire’s and Jeanine Tesori’s Kimberly Akimbo chosen as best musical.

Two special citations were awarded by the group, one to stage and film veteran Austin Pendleton, currently co-starring on Broadway in The Minutes, and a citation for emerging talent to Sanaz Toossi for two plays produced this year, English and Wish You Were Here.

The selections skewed away from Broadway’s Tony Award contenders this year, at least in part because many of those shows – including The Lehman Trilogy, A Strange Loop, Hangmen and Skeleton Crew – were recognized or eligible by the Circle in previous years for productions outside of Broadway, and thus ineligible for consideration this year.

New musicals “Kimberly Akimbo” and “Oratorio for Living Things” tied for the most wins, with three trophies each. The Drama Leauge announced the nominations for the 2022 Drama League Awards on Monday morning. Deneé Benton and André DeShields announced the nominees at this morning’s official event at The New York Library for the Performing Arts. The Drama League honors both Broadway and Off-Broadway productions in their annual celebration. Winners will be announced at the 88th Annual Drama League Awards, which will be held at the Ziegfeld Ballroom on Friday, May 20.

While the League doles out four production prizes, what makes them unique is their “Distinguished Performance” award. Up to fifty performers are nominated for the honor each year in a category that combines roles of all genders and sizes. Nominations for the 37th Annual Lucille Lortel Awards for Outstanding Achievement Off-Broadway were announced April 7, 2022 by Lilli Cooper and Lea DeLaria, stars of Broadway’s “Potus.” The Lortel Awards were created in 1985 to honor outstanding achievement Off-Broadway. The Lucille Lortel Awards are produced by the Off-Broadway League and Lucille Lortel Theatre, with additional support provided by Tdf. Winners will be announced at a ceremony on May 1, at NYU Skirball.

Tony Award hopeful Deirdre O’Connell is the recipient of this year’s Lifetime Achievement Award. She won a Lortel Award for her riveting solo performance in “Dana H.” at the Vineyard Theatre last year. That production transferred to Broadway in the fall.

Acclaimed playwright David Henry Hwang is this year’s Playwrights’ Sidewalk Inductee. His name will be added to a star on the sidewalk outside the Lucille Lortel Theatre on Christopher Street, a permanent monument to Off-Broadway playwrights.

Kimberly Akimbo, Assassins, Prayer for the French Republic and The Chinese Lady were among the Off Broadway productions receiving multiple nominations for this year’s Lucille Lortel Awards for Outstanding Achievement Off Broadway, announced today.

Among the innovations in this year’s 37th Annual Lortel Awards are the first non-gendered performance categories, and the first-ever Lortel for Outstanding Ensemble. In the new Ensemble category, the inaugural nominees are the casts of English, Oratorio For Living Things, and Twilight: Los Angeles, 1992.

Kimberly Akimbo and Oratorio For Living Things scored the most nominations, with six each, while Black No More and On Sugarland received five. Assassins, Prayer for the French Republic and The Chinese Lady each have four nominations.

The awards will be handed out on Sunday, May 1, at NYU Skirball in Manhattan. The Lucille Lortel Awards are produced by the Off-Broadway League and Lucille Lortel Theatre, with additional support provided by Tdf.

Broadway has just reopened after shuttering on March 13, 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic. To mark the return of the rialto, the 74th annual Tonys were handed out on Sunday, September 26 at the Winter Garden theater. This two-part ceremony, which will be hosted by six-time Tony winner Audra McDonald on Paramount+ and “Hamilton” star Leslie Odom, Jr. on CBS, comes almost one year after nominations were announced on October 15, 2020.

Two new musicals – “Jagged Little Pill” and “Moulin Rouge!” — lead the Tony Awards nominations with 15 and 14 bids respectively including Best Musical. Manhattan Theatre Club’s production of Ruben Santiago-Hudson’s Lackawanna Blues is now the fifth show set to begin performances on Sept. 14, the first day of Broadway’s post-shutdown reopening. The play – written, performed and directed by Santiago-Hudson (Netflix’s Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom) – will be the season’s first Broadway production by a nonprofit theater company.

Lackawanna Blues will begin performances Tuesday, September 14, and open Tuesday, September 28, at Mtc’s Samuel J. Friedman Theatre. The play will feature original music by Bill Sims, Jr. performed on stage by blues guitarist Junior Mack.

Namir Smallwood and Sidney Flanigan will star in “Rounding,” a new dramatic thriller from “Saint Frances” director Alex Thompson. “Rounding” follows a driven young medical resident (Smallwood) who transfers to a rural hospital for a fresh start. There, the demons of his past start to catch up to him when he becomes consumed by the case of a young asthma patient (Flanigan). The film was shot in secret in Chicago and just wrapped production.

Smallwood is an ensemble member at the Steppenwolf Theatre Company. He has also appeared in the television shows “Rust” and “Chicago Fire.” This is his feature film debut. Flanigan had critics raving with her work in “Never Rarely Sometimes Always,” a drama about a young woman’s efforts to obtain an abortion. She was nominated for an Independent Spirit nomination for best female lead and won prizes from the Boston Society of Film Critics and the New York Film Critics Circle.

The Broadway premiere of Skeleton Crew, written by Tony Award nominee Dominique Morisseau (Ain’t Too Proud) and directed by Tony winner Ruben Santiago-Hudson (August Wilson’s Jitney) will begin performances on Broadway during the winter of 2022, producer Manhattan Theatre Club announced today.

The production joins Mtc’s previously announced 2021-22 Broadway line-up of Santiago-Hudson’s Lackawanna Blues (fall 2021) and Paula Vogel’s How I Learned To Drive starring Mary-Louise Parker and David Morse (spring 2022). The Broadway productions will be staged at Mtc’s Samuel J. Friedman Theatre.

Mtc also announced a winter 2022 Off Broadway production of Prayer For The French Republic, a world premiere by Joshua Harmon and directed by Tony Award winner David Cromer.

Blame the coronavirus for this year’s drastically reduced roster of eligible Tony Award nominees, and Tony nominators for overlooking at least a few possibilities. Even with only 18 Broadway productions in the running for a 2020 award, feelings were bound to be hurt.

Let’s start with the good news: The list of nominees for the 74th Annual Tony Awards is a solid one, with no noticeable contenders – at least to my eye – sneaking in due to the decreased competition. Good luck to voters parsing their choices for one castmate over another – Sea Wall/A Life‘s Jake Gyllenhaal or Tom Sturridge? Slave Play‘s Ato Blankson-Wood or James Cusati-Moyer, and Chalia La Tour or Annie McNamara? Jagged Little Pill‘s Kathryn Gallagher, Celia Rose Gooding or Lauren Patten?

Of course we’ll never know how the list would be different if Six, West Side Story...

Every Tony Awards nominations morning features thrilling surprises and shocking omissions, and even in a year with an unfortunately thinner slate of shows due to Covid-19, theatre fans will inevitably find themselves gutted by a snub or two on October 15. Below, I spotlight four contenders whose contributions to the season I hope will not get overlooked by the Tonys nominating committee.

Featured Actor in a Play––Will Hochman (“The Sound Inside”)

“The Sound Inside” deserves across-the-board Tony nominations, and bids for Best Play, Mary-Louise Parker, and director David Cromer all seem assured. Out of the categories where its chances seem a bit shakier, though, a Featured Actor nomination for Will Hochman sits at the very top of my wish list. Holding one’s own in a two-hander with Tony-champion Parker sounds like a gargantuan task, but Hochman made it look effortless. His take on Christopher, an at-first unlikable college student...

The 2020 Tony Awards may represent a shortened Broadway season, but there is a wealth of contenders to consider for the play categories. Fall and winter on the rialto was full of non-musical dramas, which will make for plenty of tense races at this year’s ceremony. Nominations will be announced October 15 with a virtual ceremony sometime later this fall. If you’re confused as to who is actually able to compete for the newly announced virtual Tony Awards this fall, you’re not alone. The Tony Awards Administration Committee announced a new cut off date of February 19, 2020. That means that the 2019-2020 Broadway season was cut incredibly short.

Musical races are most heavily affected by the shortened season. “West Side Story” will have to wait until next year to compete as it opened after the February 19th eligibility cutoff date. Other scheduled revivals of “Caroline, or Change” and “Company” were postponed due to the Broadway shutdown. As such there will be no Revival of a Musical category this year. Other categories, like Best Musical and Director of a Musical, will likely see their number of nominees reduced to three due to a limited number of contenders.

Luckily, there are plenty of plays in contention since many of these non-musical outings premiere in the fall.

Written by Pulitzer Prize finalist Adam Rapp and directed by Tony winner David Cromer, “The Sound Inside” chronicles the nascent relationship between creative writing professor Bella Baird (Parker) and her student Christopher Dunn (Broadway newcomer Will Hochman), who bond over their passions for literature and writing and who together make a decision that will change both their lives.

Broadway doesn’t really do thrillers anymore. Unless we expand the definition to encompass the wailing banshees of The Ferryman or the occasional Martin McDonough blood drench, the stage has mostly ceded the genre to Hollywood. Yet that scarcity goes only so far in explaining the odd power of Adam Rapp’s The Sound Inside, a remarkable psychological mystery starring the ever-astonishing Mary-Louise Parker and her sole co-star, the up-to-the-challenge Broadway newcomer Will Hochman.

The word “thriller” might be misleading – The Sound Inside, directed by David Cromer with a hushed surety and opening tonight at Broadway’s Studio 54 – includes no obvious crimes, no hint of the supernatural or anything else we associate with bump-in-the-night tales. Rapp instead has written an intensely quiet play of two lonely people circling one another, each as wary of the other and both seeming to reach out more as instinct than plan. To say...

A raft of newcomers and previewers on Broadway’s box office roster kept the industry tally afloat last week, with a total of 29 productions reporting a combined weekly gross of $29,092,571. That’s a 12% jump over the previous week, with total attendance rising a commensurate 13% to 253,685.

The figure loses a bit of sparkle, though, when the roster count is considered – the 29 shows were four more than the previous week’s 25. Most of the newcomers just haven’t caught fire yet, nearly all of the buzzed-about previewers, from The Great Society to Slave Play, grossing well below their potentials.

But keep in mind, with the exception of Freestyle Love Supreme at the Booth, all of the newcomers are non-musicals; no one’s expecting Hadestown welcomes. So on that note, and in order of opening nights:

Call them predictions, opinions or hopes, but here are my thoughts on this year’s Tony Awards races. As usual, the roster of nominees includes a mix of consensus categories (famous last words) and the up-for-grabs. Voting closes today, so the curtain is all but drawn on the campaigning and jockeying and strategizing. Nothing left but the arguments, so add mine to the mix.

By the way, this year Tony Award administrators have pledged to crack down on voters who, in years past, might not have paid strict adherence to the rule that requires voters to see every production in a category. The administration has been keeping track of who saw what, and will disqualify fakers.

In just five years, playwright, screenwriter and Oscar-nominated director (for Manchester by the Sea) Kenneth Lonergan has seen three of his earlier works – all originally staged Off Broadway – revived for Broadway, with 1996’s This Is Our Youth (the play that introduced Mark Ruffalo to New York audiences) kicking things off with a 2014 revival starring Michael Cera and Kieran Culkin. Last year’s acclaimed staging of 2001’s Lobby Hero earned three Tony nominations, and now Lonergan’s The Waverly Gallery, a Pulitzer Prize finalist in 2001 following its staging Off Broadway, is Tony-nominated (Best Revival/play) for the remarkable 2018 Broadway staging starring Elaine May (also Tony nominated), Lucas Hedges, Joan Allen, Cera and David Cromer. Both the play and May recently won Drama Desk awards.

Mary-Louise Parker will return to Broadway this September in Adam Rapp’s The Sound Inside, directed by The Band’s Visit‘s David Cromer.

Parker will reprise her critically acclaimed Williamstown Theatre Festival performance from last summer as the play’s Bella Baird, a Yale professor and novelist who has just received a very grim cancer diagnosis.

The Sound Inside, which also will feature Will Hochman in his Broadway debut reprising his role as Bella’s student Christopher, will begin performances at Studio 54 on September 14, with an official opening night set for October 17.

The play will be produced on Broadway by Jeffrey Richards, Lincoln Center Theater and Rebecca Gold. Though Studio 54 is a Broadway venue of the Roundabout Theatre Company, The Sound Inside is not a Roundabout production. Last summer’s world premiere staging was developed and produced by Williamstown Theatre Festival, and commissioned by Lincoln Center Theater.

Broadway’s The Band’s Visit, winner of 10 Tony Awards, a commercial success and widely praised by critics, will play its final performance on Sunday, April 7, producers announced today.

“In a polarized and harsh world of politics and division, the success of The Band’s Visit has filled my heart with so much warmth and I am so grateful to the theater community who has lifted our show to these heights,” said lead producer Orin Wolf (read his entire statement below).

A national tour of the musical will launch June 25 in Providence, Rhode Island, followed by Washington, D.C.; Charlotte, Nc; Chicago; Minneapolis; Baltimore; San Francisco; and Las Vegas, with more cities to be announced.

When the Broadway production closes April 7, it will have played 589 regular performances and 36 previews at the Ethel Barrymore Theatre. The production began Oct. 7, 2017, and by the following September had recouped its $8.75 million capitalization.

The 2019 Tony Awards may be months away, but the Tony Awards Administration Committee is busy determining category placement for shows from the 2018-2019 Broadway season.

The committee met for the second time this season to determine Tony Award eligibility for ten Broadway productions. The shows discussed were: “American Son,” “The Cher Show,” “The Lifespan of a Fact,” “The Ferryman,” “To Kill a Mockingbird,” “The New One,” “Network,” “The Prom,” “Torch Song,” and “The Waverly Gallery.”

The UTA board of directors said Friday that the agency has promoted eight agents to partner, repping a 13% expansion of the group. The promotions come from across UTA’s businesses including theater, music, TV, movies and video games.

The new partners include two division heads — Video Games’ Ophir Lupu and Theatre’s Mark Subias — along with Jacob Fenton, Ken Fermaglich, Susie Fox, Ben Jacobson, John Sacks and Bec Smith.

“These eight individuals from across our business have been a critical part of UTA’s growth over the past years,” UTA said in a statement announcing the news. “Their appointments reflect not just the longstanding contributions each has made, but their leadership, innovation and commitment to creating unique opportunities for our clients.
