In the article series Sound and Vision we take a look at music videos from notable directors. This week we look at the output of Christopher Bickel. Christopher Bickel might not be a household name, but as a director he made a few interesting no-budget films. Hailing from South-Carolina, his films fit the tradition of regional filmmaking. Some of the best no-budget horror films and filmmakers worked directly within their community, often in rural places, seeing filmmaking as a collective thing. You do not need a large budget to make something worthwhile, these regional filmmakers said, and it brought us the likes of George Romero, Herschel Gordon Lewis, Bill Rebane, William Grefé, Andy Milligan and many more. They often made films within their community, with...

London is set to become the capital of fear this winter as the Soho Horror Film Festival makes its eagerly awaited return for 2024. With an expanded hybrid format, this year’s festival promises to be the biggest yet, delivering a chilling mix of in-person and online scares across two weekends. Kicking off at Brixton’s Whirled Cinema from 22nd to 24th November, the festival then moves online for its Sohome Horror Film Festival from 28th November to 1st December, offering fans a ghoulish feast of over 80 films from 17 countries.
To celebrate the 25th anniversary of The Blair Witch Project, the festival will showcase an exceptional strand of found footage films. Leading the charge is the international premiere of Tim Kasher’s Who’s Watching, a disturbing tale of obsession starring Zachary Ray Sherman. Horror fans can also expect chills from Stuart Ortiz’s documentary Strange Harvest: Occult Murder in the Inland Empire,...

Director Christopher Bickel’s horror film Pater Noster and the Mission of Light is set to receive a release sometime this fall, and today we’ve gotten our hands on two different trailers for the movie! Our friends at Bloody Disgusting unveiled a trailer earlier today that was cut together by the director, and that one can be seen at the bottom of this article. In the embed above is another trailer, and this one was cut together by JoBlo’s own Mike Conway!
Pater Noster and the Mission of Light centers on Max, a young record store clerk who stumbles upon a rare vinyl LP and is drawn into the world of a 1970s hippie commune. An invitation to the remnants of the outlandish cult and their unholy spawn leads to grave and grisly circumstances for Max and her friends. A press release notes that this film is the...

Stars: Morgan Shaley Renew, Senethia Dresch, Shelby Lois Guinn, Mike Amason, Dove Dupree, Micah Peroulis, Cleveland Langdale, Jonathan Benton, Shane Silman | Written by Christopher Bickel, Shane Silman | Directed by Christopher Bickel
We recently reviewed Bae Wolf from writer/director David Axe, a filmmaker who got his start in features writing The Theta Girl, from director Christopher Bickel who – unlike Axe – hasn’t followed up that 2017 film with any further features. Instead Bickel has, in the intervening years, spent his time making shorts and music videos. Now however Bickel makes his return to filmmaking by directing and co-writing Bad Girls, a girl-gang homage to the films of Russ Meyer and Jack Hill.
Bad Girls follows three “troubled” women – Val (Morgan Shaley Renew), Mitzi (Senethia Dresch), and Carolyn (Shelby Lois Guinn) – who, after spending their youth in and out of detention halls and jail, work together at a strip club. However the...

Steve Daniels dropped us a line today asking that we share his short film Dirty Silverware with our readers, and we have it for you right here along with some stills and a bit more info on the project.
Dirty Silverware stars Dana Childs, Corin Wiggins, and Katie Krueger. Chris Bickel did the original score, and Michael Meyer provided all the practical special effects. It screened at last year's Fantastic Fest, Toronto After Dark, and the Hp Lovecraft Film Fest and tied for Best Short Film at the 2011 Sitges film festival, considered to be the world's foremost fantasy/horror genre festival.
Daniels tells us, "The film is unique in that it features many first-time talents to filmmaking. Dana Childs, who plays the lead character, Jack, is missing part of his right arm in real life and directly inspired me to write the story. We had never met, but I had...
