Adrien Brody, Felicity Jones, Guy Pearce, Joe Alwyn and Stacy Martin hit the Venice Film Festival on Sunday for the premiere of Brady Corbet’s The Brutalist.
They were joined at the press conference by the other members of the buzzy cast – Raffey Cassidy, Stacy Martin, Emma Laird, Isaach De Bankolé and Alessandro Nivola – who squeezed onto the stage.
Brody stars as László Tóth, a Hungarian-born Jewish architect who emigrates to the U.S. with his wife Erzsébet after surviving the Holocaust. Working through poverty and indignity toward the “American dream”.
Pearce plays a mysterious wealthy client who gives him a life-changing contract, while Jones is Tóth’s wife.
Brody said he had felt “immediate kinship and understanding” for the character of Tóth due to the trajectory of his mother, the photographer Sylvia Plachy.
“She’s a wonderful photographer, but she’s also a Hungarian immigrant who fled Hungary in 1956 in the Hungarian Revolution.

Filmmaker Brady Corbet has premiered features twice before at Venice, but never at this scale.
“The Brutalist” is the director’s first feature since 2018’s “Vox Lux,” which starred Natalie Portman as a pop star haunted by a school shooting. Before that, Corbet also premiered “The Childhood of a Leader” (2015) at Venice, announcing a singular cinematic voice after years of acting in indies like “Melancholia,” “Simon Killer,” “Mysterious Skin,” and “Thirteen.”
As Venice Film Festival artistic director Alberto Barbera revealed during the July 23 press conference announcing the lineup, “The Brutalist” will premiere in competition. It’s also a whopping 215 minutes long, which includes a 15-minute intermission. The film was shot on Vista Vision by Lol Crawley, director of photography on the celluloid-made “Vox Lux” and “The Childhood of a Leader” as well as Noah Baumbach’s “White Noise” more recently. Barbera confirmed that the Italian film festival will screen “The Brutalist” in 70mm,...

Following his big splash in U.S. Cinema last year with A24’s absurdist Nicolas Cage comedy Dream Scenario, Norwegian filmmaker Kristoffer Borgli is attached to direct and EP the HBO development series title, The Shards.
The Shards is based on Bret Easton Ellis’ novel of the same name, and is set in the early 80s and tracks a group of privileged Los Angeles High School friends as a serial killer strikes across the city. There is also a podcast which dropped in 2022.
In The Shards, Seventeen-year-old Bret is a senior at the exclusive Buckley prep school when a new student arrives with a mysterious past. Robert Mallory is bright, handsome, charismatic, and shielding a secret from Bret and his friends even as he becomes a part of their tightly knit circle. Bret’s obsession with Mallory is equaled only by his increasingly unsettling preoccupation with the Trawler, a serial...

Bret Easton Ellis’ series at HBO is inching closer to reality. HBO has tapped Kristoffer Borgli to direct the series adaptation of the Ellis book “The Shards.”
Borgli, who directed last year’s “Dream Scenario” starring Nicolas Cage and 2022’s “Sick of Myself,” is attached to direct and serve as an executive producer on the series that’s currently in development at HBO.
Ellis published “The Shards” just last year, and the series per its official logline is “set in the early ’80s and tracks a group of privileged Los Angeles High School friends as a serial killer strikes across the city.”
But what makes “The Shards” ripe for an adaptation is that it’s a pulpy and sexy yet sprawling and unwieldy piece of fiction featuring much of Ellis’ own biography. While it follows the murders of a serial killer known as The Trawler with great detail, it also...

Big news for "Star Wars" fans: today's Lucasfilm Studio Showcase at Star Wars Celebration has officially announced three new live-action "Star Wars" films, which are currently in the making. Directors James Mangold, Dave Filoni, and Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy will be helming these respective projects, and Filoni's new movie is set to focus on the New Republic while connecting the interconnected stories in Disney+ shows such as "The Mandalorian," The Book of Boba Fett," and "Ahsoka," among others.
Meanwhile, Mangold's movie will trace the beginnings of the Jedi as Force-sensitive beings, and Obaid-Chinoy's project will be fleshing out the events after "The Rise of Skywalker," with Rey (Daisey Ridley) setting the stage for a new Jedi Order. The announcement of the three, brand-new "Star Wars" projects certainly calls for celebration, as the last theatrical release in the franchise was 2019's "The Rise of Skywalker," post which we have only had to survive...

Iginio Straffi, creator of the magical “Winx Club” TV franchise and founder of its Rainbow S.p.A production company, was a bit surprised that Netflix cancelled the live-action “Fate: The Winx Saga” after two seasons. But he also sees it as an opportunity.
“I still have to hear what Netflix has to say officially,” Straffi said in an exclusive interview with Variety after he learned from showrunner Brian Young that the series was axed. “I will be talking to Netflix to fully understand what happened.”
The “Winx Saga” cancellation means that contractually Straffi, who created the six trendy fairies that have become a global IP, can now forge ahead with a long-planned, live-action “Winx” movie budgeted at more than 100 million. It’s “probably the most important project of my entire career,” he said.
For its creator, turning “Winx” into a live-action movie franchise is a culmination of the saga’s journey.

“Gutted” fans of Netflix’s latest casualty have just had their hopes fuelled.
Earlier this week, it was announced that the streaming service had cancelled Fate: The Winx Saga.
Those who enjoyed the show questioned the decision, highlighting that the series topped the charts in several countries globally and that the latest season, which was released in September 2022, ended on a giant cliffhanger.
It was showrunner Brian Young who announced the news, writing on Instagram: “This is not fun news to share, but Netflix [has] decided not to move forward with season three of Fate: The Winx Saga. This is especially tough because I know how many of you loved this season. It’s a heartbreaking silver lining, but a silver lining all the same.”

Netflix has swung the axe on a chart-topping series despite the previous season ending on a cliffhanger.

Netflix released the series in 2021, hoping it would be another huge cultural hit in a similar way to Stranger Things and Bridgerton.
Despite receiving enough streams to send it to the top of the charts in several countries around the world, Netflix was unable to see a future for the series.

For better or worse, Hollywood's nostalgia-mining tendencies come for us all. For fans of the Nickelodeon animated series "Winx Club," this was both a blessing and a curse: when the Netflix adaptation "Fate: The Winx Saga" arrived in 2021, it brought the beloved faeries back to screens. But it also received a very mixed reception.
Like so many of the gritty live-action adaptations being forced down our throats, "Fate: The Winx Saga" was after an entirely new audience. Rather than emulating the source material, this series targets older teens, shedding colorful whimsy for a dark fantasy aesthetic. Between the entirely new vibe and the many altered/missing characters, not all fans were pleased when the series first arrived. But this September, the sophomore season brought along some reason for hope. With its second outing, "Fate: The Winx Saga" seemed to incorporate much of that fan feedback — adding in some sorely missed...

If you've been craving more supernatural dramas since "Chilling Adventures of Sabrina" ended, Netflix's series "Fate: The Winx Saga" is here to satisfy your binge-watching needs. The first season premiered on Jan. 22, 2021, and it's filled with tons of drama, magic, and mystery. On Feb. 18, 2021, Netflix confirmed that the series had been renewed for a second season, which will consist of eight episodes. The streamer released the official trailer on Aug. 23, and it foreshadows a dramatic follow-up to the first season's intense conclusion.
The series is based on the animated series "Winx Club," which ran for eight seasons, so there is plenty of source material for the upcoming season. While the Netflix series faced criticism for its live-action adaptation, particularly the whitewashing of some of the main fairies, the intriguing plot certainly drew audiences in.
"Diversity both in front of and behind the camera is vital and much-needed throughout the industry and internationally.

Based on the Italian cartoon “Winx Club,” the initial first season of the 2021 live-action teen drama adaptation, “Fate: The Winx Saga” on Netflix was met with quite a lot of backlash from fans and critics of the original show. The teen drama, akin to “Riverdale,” was developed by Brian Young who also acted as the showrunner and executive producer. Still, the live-action series also took things to a more supernatural level.

By February the show was renewed, leaving fans eager for news about Flora. Although the Covid-19 pandemic forced a production slowdown in Hollywood, European shows are gaining unprecedented global traction, becoming a significant catalyst of an ongoing shifting dynamic in IP dominance.
