The new year is fast approaching, and it's already time to start planning your 2025 binge-watches. In January 2025, Netflix welcomes a small handful of recent small screen favorites like TV Land's rom-com Younger and the newest spinoff from The Walking Dead universe coming to Netflix for the first time, and in another case, a time-tested hit procedural will see its earliest seasons returning after being removed months prior.

Exclusive: Carl Clemons-Hopkins, one of the Emmy-nominated stars of Max’s Emmy-winning comedy Hacks, has signed with Independent Artist Group for representation.

On Hacks, Clemons-Hopkins portrays Marcus Vaughan, the loyal, hardworking and highly organized head of the management team repping famed Las Vegas stand-up Deborah Vance (Jean Smart). “Let’s Make a Deal” host Wayne Brady came out earlier this week as pansexual.

The 51-year-old, who is also known for “Whose Line Is It Anyway” and “The Masked Singer” (which he won in Season 2), made the announcement on Monday via People Magazine.

“I am pansexual,” Brady declared, adding, “Bisexual — with an open mind!”

According to GLAAD, pansexuality falls under the bisexuality umbrella. The LGBTQ+ advocacy organization defines pansexual as “an adjective used to describe a person who has the capacity to form enduring physical, romantic, and/ or emotional attractions to any person, regardless of gender identity.”

A pansexual individual’s sexuality may evolve over time. Brady was formerly married to Mandie Taketa, and the two share a daughter, Maile. He said to People he has been attracted to men in the past, but has never dated one.

Pansexual individuals are sometimes non-binary, but the two are not mutually exclusive.

City on Fire will not return for a second season. Apple TV+ has cancelled the drama, which wrapped its eight-episode season in June, per Deadline. Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage created the show.

The decision comes six weeks after the conclusion of City on Fire Season 1.

The series failed to garner much buzz, a surefire sign that a show is not long for this world.

We rarely get viewership statistics for streaming shows, so the buzz is the only indicator of success to observers.

City on Fire was saddled with terrible reviews from critics, with a 39% rotten rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Fans were considerably more positive, with an audience score of 78%.

Apple TV+ recently launched Silo, which became the most-watched drama, achieving considerable buzz and acclaim.

Hijack also seems ripe for success after breaking through in ways many shows haven't.

The Apple TV+ crime drama “City on Fire,” which wrapped up its 8-episode first season two months ago, will not be getting a second season, TheWrap has confirmed.

Based on the novel of the same name by Garth Risk Hallberg, “City on Fire” wasn’t listed as a limited series. But the story shown in Season 1 covered the entire book, which means viewers won’t be stuck with a never-resolved cliffhanger similar to Hulu’s 2020 “High Fidelity” adaptation.

Set in 2003, the story follows the aftermath of the shooting of a young student in Central Park, New York city. The investigation uncovers ties to a series of fires, the Manhattan music scene, and a secretive and wealthy real estate family.

It wasn’t exactly surprising when Freeform’s beloved critically acclaimed “Single Drunk Female” was canceled this month after just two seasons and immediately pulled from Hulu. Sure, Freeform touted the sitcom as the highest-rated original comedy during the New York City Season 2 premiere before the series returned with all new episodes on Hulu in April. But its cancellation is just one of the many reminders that networks don’t invest long-term in women-fronted shows that focus on “messy” millennial women.

Frameline, the San Francisco International LGBTQ+ Film Festival concluded its 47th iteration on Saturday, June 24, with a screening of Taylor Mac’s 24-Decade History of Popular Music, directed by Oscar-winning duo Rob Epstein and Jeffrey Friedman (The Celluloid Closet). To celebrate the release of City on Fire, the new series coming to Apple TV this week, we sat down with some of the show’s incredible ensemble to find out more.

Based on the best-selling novel and from executive producers of The O.C. and Gossip Girl, City on Fire is a drama-filled mystery propelled by interlocking narratives and character-driven twists. Set in post 9/11 New York City, the story centers around the Central Park shooting of a young college student, but when the search for the shooter quickly touches all corners of New York society, it brings together an unlikely cast of characters all looking for answers to questions of their own.

Halfway through City on Fire, William Hamilton Sweeney (Nico Tortorella), the artistic, anti-capitalist heir to a New York real estate empire, makes a dramatic proclamation. "I don't give a sh*t about this business. I never have. I never will," he tells his step-uncle, so-called "Demon Brother" Amory Gould (John Cameron Mitchell). "I am here to solve a mystery."

The encounter is one of many clumsy moments in Apple's adaptation of Garth Risk Hallberg's novel, which was widely hailed as one of the best books of 2015 and debuted at #5 on The New York Times Bestseller list. While Hallberg's 900-page tome offered a sprawling look at 1970s New York and the people — of various races, socioeconomic status, and political bents — affected by a single tragedy, creators Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage struggle to bring the subtleties of his work to the limited series.

Crime entertainment media, where many people appear motivated to commit the crime, is not new.

A successful movie franchise has existed since the early 1980s, speaking to the format's success.

However, this format can fall into the pattern of shallowness where the only exciting thing that happens is the crime and its resolution.

On City on Fire, the story follows an ensemble of characters who, on the surface, seem unrelated to each other, but upon further investigation, there seems to be a connection.

That connection comes in the form of a young lady, but no one can figure that out without knowing first about a crime committed against her.

On the 4th of July 2003, Samantha leaves her favorite band's venue and goes to meet someone in Central Park but never returns.

Later, she is found shot, lying on the cold hard ground with her blood draining from her body and seeping through the ground.

John Cameron Mitchell was originally cast in John Hughes’ “The Breakfast Club,” but that incarnation of the movie never happened due to lack of funding, the actor told TheWrap.

The actor, best known for his role in the 2001 cult classic “Hedwig and the Angry Inch,” plays a sinister step-uncle to Jemima Kirke and Nico Tortorella’s characters in the new Apple TV+ series “City on Fire.” He had the occasion to revisit his brush with the Brat Pack when he and Molly Ringwald, who played rich girl Claire Standish in the ’80s high school classic, were both on the same flight.

Reading Garth Risk Hallberg’s City on Fire well after its initial publication hype, it isn’t always clear what generated that buzz in the first place.

At 900+ pages, it’s an unquestionably ambitious first novel, but Hallberg’s distinctive prose feels mostly in service of obfuscation. It’s a book in which all manner of structural and aesthetic trickiness — an occasionally evocative ’70s setting, faux Dickensian sprawl, flashbacks, flash-forwards, digressions in the form of a punk rock ‘zine and a fireworks-obsessed piece of long-form journalism — offer distraction from the run-of-the-mill mysteries that make up the core storyline. It’s full of vivid moments, but less full of effective twists or compelling characters.

Watching Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage’s Apple TV+ adaptation of City on Fire, which arrives with no particular hype, it isn’t always clear what connection it even has to the book in the first place.

Apple TV+ will be premiering the eight-episode series City on Fire, inspired by Garth Risk Hallberg’s bestselling novel, on May 12, 2023. The first three episodes will be released simultaneously, followed by new episodes on Fridays. The season’s finale is set to air on June 16th.

City on Fire takes place in New York City, and in an interview with NPR in October 2015, author Hallberg – who grew up in North Carolina – explained why he chose NYC as the setting. “I fell in love with New York at some indeterminate point in my early years,” said Hallberg. “Something about the city captured my imagination in a way that even Middle-Earth and Narnia couldn’t — because it was somehow real.”

Hallberg added: “So I guess I was dreaming my way into it long before I realized that I was going to write about it.”

Apple TV+ is turning yet another bestselling book into a streaming series, much like it's done in the past with shows such as "Pachinko" and "The Essex Serpent." The streamer has shared new information surrounding the release of "City On Fire," an eight-part Apple Original crime drama inspired by the 2015 novel of the same name by author Garth Risk Hallberg. If you're familiar with the book, you'll know this is a mystery that you can spend hours nitpicking and still be surprised when you turn the page.
