Bruce Campbell Discusses His “Hysteria!” Character Arc and Reveals What He’d Like to See in Season 2
Peacock’s coming-of-age thriller series “Hysteria!” plunged its small Michigan town into full-blown Satanic Panic. Thanks to its teen protagonists and an atypically sympathetic police chief, order is mostly restored in Happy Hollow by season’s end.
Chief Dandridge (Bruce Campbell) had a particularly stressful arc in showrunners Matthew Scott Kane (Stitchers) and David Goodman’s (The Orville) inaugural season; the observant yet patient small-town lawman nearly succumbed to the hysteria himself and rallied to survive a near-death confrontation with The Reverend (Garret Dillahunt). The finale wraps up the season’s overarching questions, yet leaves lingering signs that The Reverend and Tracy Whitehead’s (Anna Camp) devious machinations still have roots in Happy Hollow.
Considering that Campbell plays his cop character with unconventional kindness and is billed as a guest star, not series regular, where does that leave the actor regarding the future of the series?

Bruce Campbells Hysteria! is his first horror show in years, and it's the perfect follow-up to his fame-making franchise. Campbell is best known for playing protagonist Ash Williams in the classic horror series Evil Dead. Released in 1981, The Evil Dead immediately cemented Campbell as an '80s horror icon, along with writer-director Sam Raimi. Campbell reprised the role in the next two movies, Evil Dead II and Army of Darkness, then once again returned in 2015 for the spinoff TV show Ash vs Evil Dead.
Now 66 years old, Campbell has to play a different kind of role than college student Ash when taking on horror projects. Having joined the Hysteria! cast, the actor plays the towns chief of police, Dandridge, who is trying to investigate a mysterious disappearance while having run-ins with some local kids who are starting a Satan-inspired band. Hysteria! a fun show, but it is a notable role...

The last few years have probably felt familiar to many, with a constant blame game in the media attributing violence and crime to one thing or another. Those who lived through the 1980s likely remember the Satanic Panic that spread through the United States, where politicians blamed all sorts of things on kids and teenagers becoming obsessed with Dungeons & Dragons and heavy metal music. This panic was reminiscent of the Salem Witch Trials, which in turn were like the Red Scare of the 1950s. Now, we get to look back at this crazy era through a modern lens, thanks to Hysteria!
Created by Matthew Scott Kane, Hysteria! looks at a small Michigan town in the 1980s where the disappearance of a popular high school student leads to theories of devil worship and supernatural influences in the community. Oliver (Daniel Dimaggio) and Cooper's (Logan Pepper) friendship is a huge storyline in the last few seasons of American Housewife, available via Hulu. Yet some audience members and even characters have speculated that the two were more than just friends. In American Housewife Oliver and Cooper share a close bond and other characters often joke about their closeness, implying they are in a relationship as a bad running gag. However, there is some evidence suggesting that they really are a couple, as well as an argument that the show should have committed to this storyline.
Oliver's sexuality in American Housewife has been a recurring topic of discussion since season 1. Even when this subplot was apparently resolved, the writers always found a way to return to it. When the show introduces Cooper as a recurring character, he provides more reason for the audience to wonder about Oliver's sexuality. Although American Housewife...

Welcome to the eerie world of Hysteria!, Peacock’s new supernatural series set in 1980s Michigan. Over eight creepy episodes, the small town of Happy Hollow falls prey to moral panic when its high school football star disappears under mysterious circumstances.
As strange events unfold and rumors of devil worship spread, paranoia takes hold of the community. Amid the townspeople pointing fingers at each other, three misfit teens find themselves at the center of the controversy in their quest for fame and friendship.
Hysteria! transports us back to an era shaped by social upheaval and conservative backlash. In the fall of 1989, Happy Hollow is a typical Midwest picture of Americana—until Ryan Hudson vanishes without a trace.
When his body is discovered with occult symbols carved into his flesh, the residents are thrown into a frenzy. Seizing the suddenly rapt interest in the occult, lonely outcast Dylan Campbell hatches a...

Just in time for a Halloween binge, Hysteria! is now available on Peacock and, having seen most of the series already, I can definitely say that it's worth your time. An 80s-set horror story that doesn't feel like it's focused on nostalgia, Hysteria! has a great cast with great chemistry, and it really does a great job of building up its characters, including its supporting cast, which features Bruce Campbell as the chief of police in a town where satanic panic takes hold. During a recent press day, I caught up with Bruce Campbell, where we talked about his new role and his experience with satanic panic in the 1980s.
Synopsis: "When a beloved varsity quarterback disappears during the “Satanic Panic” of the late 1980s, a struggling high school heavy metal band of outcasts realize they can capitalize on the town’s sudden interest in the occult by building a...

When people think of Julie Bowen as an actress, Modern Family often comes to mind before anything else. Julie played the lovable role of Claire Dunphy on the show for 11 seasons starting in 2009. The sitcom is highly revered for being one of the most progressive TV shows in recent history.
Modern Family did so well that it earned tons of awards, including the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Comedy Series and the Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series. Here’s what Julie just admitted about breaking free from the role of Claire.

Anna Camp’s devout Christian Tracy Whitehead is at the frontlines of stirring up a Satanic Panic frenzy in Peacock‘s coming-of-age thriller “Hysteria!” Her central targets? High school outcasts and close friends Dylan Campbell (Emjay Anthony), Jordy (Chiara Aurelia), and Spud (Kezii Curtis).
That the trio is part of a heavy metal band draws Tracy’s ire, setting the stage for paranoia, mistrust, and occult madness when they decide to lean into their Satanic reputation. That backfires when a series of bizarre kidnappings, murders, and supernatural events trace back to the friends. That Tracy has domestic woes with her own daughter, Faith (Nikki Hahn), will only further complicate the growing division between teens and grownups alike in the small Michigan town plagued by, well, hysteria.

Matthew Scott Kane and David A. Goodman are taking audiences back to the Satanic Panic for a hilarious and twisty ride with Hysteria!. The TV show serves as Kane's biggest project to date as a writer, having primarily worked as a production assistant on everything from American Horror Story to It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, while having also penned one episode of the ABC Family sci-fi crime drama Stitchers. Goodman, on the other hand, has six Emmy nominations under his belt for his work on Futurama and Family Guy, while also having worked on Seth MacFarlane's The Orville.
Created by Kane and showrun by him and Goodman, Hysteria! is set in a fictional small Michigan town in the '80s that is rocked by the disappearance of a local varsity quarterback, which seemingly points to a potential Satanic cult in the area. As the investigation continues, a trio...

Anna Camp and Nikki Hahn are a mother and daughter whose secrets risk their idyllic small town in Hysteria!. Hahn, on the other hand, has been steadily making a name for herself in recent years after a variety of guest TV appearances, with more recent roles including Disney Channel's well-received Adventures in Babysitting remake and recurring role on American Housewife.

Peacock‘s coming-of-age thriller series “Hysteria!” is set to tackle the era of Satanic Panic, with heavy metal and actual Satanism sowing generational division in a small conservative town in Michigan. And what’s Michigan horror without actor Bruce Campbell?
The actor guest stars as Chief Dandridge in the series, set to premiere all episodes on Friday, October 18, 2024.
“Hysteria!” follows a group of 1980s high school misfits as they exploit the growing hysteria around teen occult activity, written and executive produced by Matthew Scott Kane (Stitchers) and David Goodman (The Orville). Caught in the middle of the mounting tension between adults and teens is Campbell’s police chief.
Unlike his most iconic character, Ash Williams, Chief Dandridge prefers logic and science. Though he isn’t your typical small-town police chief. That’s because he treats the teens with respect and compassion, a far cry from the typical parents in suburban set ’80s horror.

Emjay Anthony, Chiara Aurelia and Kezii Curtis are three friends whose efforts to break free from being outcasts leads to them becoming the targets of their small town in Hysteria!. Though having different starts to their careers, both Anthony and Aurelia had early success in the horror genre, with the former having starred in both the well-received horror-comedy Krampus and Aaron Eckhart-led Incarnate, while the latter starred in both Mike Flanagan's Gerald's Game adaptation and Fear Street Part Two: 1978. Curtis, on the other hand, is better known for his young-demographic-skewing fare, most recently including the Owen Wilson-starring Secret Headquarters.

Bruce Campbell is a police chief in a small town where evil and madness is starting to take root in Hysteria!. Campbell is arguably best known for his work in the horror genre as Ash Williams in Sam Raimi's Evil Dead franchise, having starred as the character in three films, a post-credits cameo and the three-season TV show continuation, Ash vs. Evil Dead. Beyond the franchise, Campbell has also found acclaim for his work in the horror-comedy Bubba Ho-Tep, the cult classic show The Adventures of Brisco County Jr. and as one of the main stars in the spy comedy Burn Notice across its seven-season run and prequel movie spinoff.
Campbell stars in Hysteria! as Chief Dandridge, the police chief of a fictional small town in Michigan in the 1980s who gets swept up investigating the sudden disappearance of the local varsity quarterback, including the seeming Satanic imagery left behind by the kidnappers.

I don't know if it's just because I'm really missing the show or there's more to it, but watching the Hysteria! on Peacock trailer is just giving me Stranger Things vibes and I'm so here for it. And though the Netflix series is already dark, this one looks to be even darker. So I think that if you're a fellow Stranger Things fan like me, you'll want to check out Hysteria! too!
The new horror thriller premieres Friday, Oct. 18, 2024 with all 8 episodes on Peacock. That's right, it's going to be a binge-watch. I personally think these episodes should have had more of a weekly release instead. But, that's what the streamer wants I guess. We shared the trailer below:
Do you see what I mean? Just the sets and being in the '80s time period is giving off Stranger Things, for sure. The two shows have a very similar look to them.

Peacock’s upcoming series Hysteria! shows a town in the grips of a Satanic Panic — emphasis on the “satanic” part.
The streamer has released a full trailer for the show, which premieres Oct. 18 and centers on three high schoolers (Emjay Anthony, Chiara Aurelia and Kezii Curtis) whose heavy-metal band decides to lean into the fear caused when the high school quarterback goes missing and a pentagram is painted on the teen’s garage. Their makeover as satanists, however, unleashes forces — both among their peers and, possibly, with something otherworldly — that soon spin out of their control.
The trailer — which greatly expands on an earlier teaser — also shows a teenage girl (Nikki Hahn) being abducted by a creepy masked intruder and a woman (Julie Bowen) being stalked by an unseen entity. Watch it below.
The show’s regular cast also includes Anna Camp, horror icon Bruce Campbell, Garret Dillahunt, Nolan North,...

Bruce Campbell is no stranger to dealing with the supernatural, so it’s no surprise that Variety has reported that he’s joined the cast of Hysteria!, Peacock’s satanic panic series.
Per the official description, “When a beloved varsity quarterback disappears during the ‘Satanic Panic’ of the late 1980s, a struggling high school heavy metal band of outcasts realize they can capitalize on the town’s sudden interest in the occult by building a reputation as a Satanic metal band, until a bizarre series of murders, kidnappings, and reported ‘supernatural activity’ triggers a leather-studded witch hunt that leads directly back to them.” Sounds… interesting. Bruce Campbell will play Chief Dandridge in Hysteria!, who is described as “a small-town police chief whose understanding of his community is put to the test after a disturbing series of murders, disappearances, and unexplained phenomena.”
