El Gigante is directed by Gigi Saul Guerrero and Luke Bramley, and written by Shane McKenzie. The film stars Edwin Perez, Luis Javier, Arlina Rodriguez, Alexa Marie, Mathias Retamal, Devyn Dalton, Nisreen Slim, Adelita Rockhill, Indiana Dean, and David Forts. Madre De Dios is directed by Gigi Saul Guerrero and written by Shane McKenzie and Gigi Saul Guerrero. The film stars Tristan Risk, Luis Javier, and Gabriela Zimmerman.
I have always said that it is very difficult to review short films, because you can hardly say anything about them without giving everything away. But, there are some shorts that are so good, and some short film directors who are so talented, that every once in a while I break my moratorium on writing about shorts and cover them.
Gigi Saul Guerrero is such a director, and El Gigante and Madre De Dios are two such films.

We would have to change our website's name to "Kickstarter Central" if we covered every project that fell across our desks. But that doesn't mean we won't call out the ones that get our attention, as is the case with the macabre short film El Gigante.
Dread readers may recall a book I covered a few months back called Muerte Con Carne (review). El Gigante is a short film that adapts the first chapter of Shane McKenzie's novel, introducing horror fans to El Gigante, a deranged luchador who preys on illegal immigrants crossing the U.S.-Mexico Border.
The funds raised from this Kickstarter (only $5000 Cad) will go towards the completion of the short film, which will then be used to generate interest in a feature-length adaptation of the entire novel. As a rabid fan of Muerte Con Carne I have already ponied up some funds in support of this,...

There’s a general misconception among casual horror fans that any flick produced by a fellow fan, or amateur, isn’t worth the time it takes to type in w-w-w-.-y-o-u-t-u-b-e-.-c-o-m.
Bona fide horror hounds have been tuned in to these inspired projects for years, understanding and respecting the effort devoted to a genuine passion piece. The detractors tend (this isn’t a rule carved in stone, mind you) to be the guys and gals who catch a macabre flick once every week or so, wiling to confess their affinity for the genre, but perhaps not devoted enough to qualify as a certified freak for terror, who haven’t taken the time to study these ambitious pictures.
The truth is, anyone who can openly acknowledge their love for horror can potentially find some brilliant fan productions, regardless of how dedicated one may or may not be. Sometimes fans just...

Firstly, artist Trenty Shy has created a stop motion title stamp for the upcoming found footage anthology sequel V/H/S 2. It’s intensely neat and includes three hallmarks of genre fun: tapes, blood and skulls.

Fango friends Mad Lab Productions, who ring in holidays and seasons with claymation ghouls have taken a different route this Valentine’s Day, as a gentleman zombie suitor presents the object of his affection with an object of their appetite. Mad Lab’s Chris Walsh says, “I’m always amazed at how effectively puppets can connect with an audience. The puppet can be very elaborate and realistic, or as simple as a sock on a hand. But if there’s something there for the audience to connect with in terms of character, it can work. It’s pretty magic how that happens. I’m sure it goes back to shadow puppets on cave walls,...

There are tons of videos on YouTube featuring condensed versions of classic films. Some are meant to spoof the original movie while others are clear homages. What I never knew is that there is an entire film festival for one minute remakes of old films. Virgin Radio's 95.3 FM. a Vancouver based station, holds an annual Fake Film Festival for aspiring filmmakers to take any movie and redo it in 60 seconds. This entry from directors Gigi Saul Guerrero & Luke Bramley shows a clear love...
