The top music streamer responded to Drake’s claim that the company inflated the streams of Lamar’s diss song aimed at him on Friday in a new filing, saying: “Umg and Spotify have never had any arrangement in which Umg charged Spotify licensing rates 30 percent lower than its usual licensing rates for ‘Not Like Us’ in exchange for Spotify affirmatively recommending [‘Not Like Us]’, including ‘to users who are searching for other songs and artists.’”

“The Petition claims that an unidentified individual reported on a podcast that he used bots to achieve 30,000,000 streams on Spotify in the first days of the release of ‘Not Like Us.’ Spotify found no evidence to substantiate this claim,” the streamer continued in its opposition papers.

Tyler Perry’s new Netflix film, The Six Triple Eight, casts a long-overdue spotlight on the 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion, the only all-Black, all-female unit to serve in the United States Army during World War II. The film, which premieres on December 20, follows the inspirational story of these 855 women who processed millions of backlogged letters and supplies to bolster the morale of soldiers overseas while experiencing discrimination and segregation both at home and abroad.

The film centers on the narrative of Charity Adams, the highest-ranking African-American woman in the US Army. Adams, played by Kerry Washington, guides the Battalion through their critical task, which has been largely neglected in military and African-American history.

Some of the project’s contributors find personal meaning in it. Rapper Big Sean went to the Los Angeles premiere with his mother to honor a personal connection: his grandmother was a member of the 6888th Battalion.

Drake’s feud with Kendrick Lamar has reached another level: The Canadian rapper is claiming that Universal Music Group and Spotify have inflated the streams of Lamar’s diss song aimed at him.

Drake’s Frozen Moments company filed a petition in a New York court Monday, alleging that Umg — the parent label both rappers are signed to — “launched a campaign to manipulate and saturate the streaming services and airwaves with a song, ‘Not Like Us,’ in order to make that song go viral, including by using ‘bots’ and pay-to-play agreements.”

Umg said in a statement that the allegations are “offensive and untrue.” Drake is signed to Umg subsidiary Republic Records, while Lamar is signed to Umg’s Interscope Records. The petition comes days after Lamar released the surprise album Gnx and months before he will headline the Super Bowl halftime show.

“Not Like Us” is one of the year’s biggest hits.

Netflix’s Rhythm + Flow is set to return for the three-part second season on November 20, 2024. The streamer announced the premiere and released the full trailer for the new season, along with an expanded list of big-name guest judges.

Busta Rhymes, Big Sean, Remy Ma, GloRilla, Mr. Porter, and Royce Da 5’9’s are on board as guest judges. They join Eminem who was previously announced as a season two special guest judge.

“Rhythm + Flow, Netflix’s hip hop music competition hosted by a panel of industry heavy hitters ready to discover the next generation’s rap star,” reads the official synopsis. “This competition will feature contestants from all over the country who are hungry and ready to prove themselves to see if they have what it takes to take home the grand prize of $250,000 and the title of hip hop’s newest star.”

Netflix has revealed the official trailer and key art for Rhythm + Flow Season 2 and announced the list of industry icons who will add their expert POVs on the up-and-coming artists featured in the music competition series.

Rhythm + Flow Season 2 will debut in three parts, starting with Part 1 (episodes 201-204) on November 20, 2024, Part 2 (205-207) on November 27, and Part 3 (208-210) on December 4.

MTV is kicking things off early at 6/5c with an official pre-show, featuring interviews with this year’s nominees, performers and presenters, as well as performances by K-pop girl group Le Sserafim. Eminem will release an extended deluxe version of his recent LP, The Death Of Slim Shady (Coup De Grâce), on Sept. 13.

The rapper announced the Expanded Mourner’s Edition of the album on social media alongside a short video featuring a milk carton with a missing notice for Slim Shady. “Have you seen him?” Eminem inquired with the announcement. A tracklist for the expanded edition has yet to be revealed.

Big Sean announced the new release date for his upcoming album Better Me Than You in an emotional video shared to social media on Friday. The LP, previously set to roll out on Aug. 9, will now be dropping Aug. 30.

“The album is dropping this week,” said the Finally Famous rapper during an Instagram Live. “I appreciate my mom for being that guardian angel always giving me that advice. She really talked me through it for real. Like I said, I haven’t been sleeping a lot. I been giving this shit my all.
