It’s only been three months since the Abbott Elementary Season 4 finale aired on ABC, but the network is already moving forward with the next season of the hit sitcom. ABC has confirmed that Abbott Elementary Season 1 will debut on October 1 alongside the next season of Shifting Gears, another hit sitcom starring Tim Allen. Abbott Elementary sits at a nearly perfect 99% from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, and even general audiences are high on the series, rating it a strong 89% on the audience-driven Popcornmeter. Abbott Elementary is a workplace comedy centered around a group of dedicated teachers at a Philadelphia public school. Despite the odds being constantly stacked against them, they are committed to helping get the most out of their students and helping them succeed.
Abbott Elementary was written and created for television by Quinta Brunson, who also stars in the lead role of Janine Teagues in the hit ABC sitcom.

While “Abbott Elementary” creator and star Quinta Brunson is a noted scholar of classic sitcoms, she does not envy the episode orders of yore. “Some of my favorite shows had 30 to 40 episode seasons, which is insane,” said the Emmy winner, noting her respect for those older series’ hustle. “But I cannot tell you how hard it is to not make absolute garbage. You start going [into Episode] 22 like ‘Honestly, I could phone it in.’ We’ve seen other shows do it. We don’t want to do that. We want to continue to make good television. We want every episode to be a surprise. We want you to not [say] ‘I’m going to go back to the tired episode of the tired show.’ We would like to keep it compelling.”

Amy Pascal knows Hollywood changed significantly from her days as chairperson of Sony Pictures Entertainment. But the producer of “Challengers” says the key to making a good film — or any project — during this season of change is simple: perseverance.
“At this point, I really only want to work on things that I want on my gravestone, because that’s coming … but you just have to love [an idea] so much that you don’t care how hard it is,” Pascal said Tuesday at TheWrap’s 2024 Power Women Summit. “Once you feel something and you think it’s worth it, just kill yourself to get it done.”
Pascal echoed sentiments from other top female Hollywood creatives who participated in the Producer Roundtable for TheWrap, moderated by Producers Guild of America CEO Susan Sprung. The panel conversation also included “Anora” producer Samantha Quan, “True Detective: Night Country” showrunner Issa López and “Abbott Elementary” executive producer Brittani Nichols.

With the 2024 Oscars and the 2023 Emmys firmly in the rearview mirror, the film and TV awards calendar is all but ready to return to normalcy after last years Writers Guild of America and SAG-AFTRA strikes disrupted the first half of award season. The last major event to be impacted by the altered schedule is today’s WGA Awards, which took place in an unusual post-Oscars slot after the strikes forced the guild to delay its voting process. As most of Hollywood looks ahead to the 2024 film and TV slate, today’s concurrent ceremonies in Los Angeles’ Hollywood Palladium and New York City’s Edison Ballroom gave award watchers one last chance to celebrate the best screenwriting of 2023.

The strike-delayed nominations for the 2024 Writers Guild Awards are out. Check out the list below.
In a flipping of the script this season, the WGA Awards will be held on April 14 – more than a month after the Academy Awards.
As always, the Writers Guild of America has different eligibility requirements than the Movie Academy, so some awards-season favorite scripts are missing from today’s nominations.

The nominees for the 2024 Writers Guild of America Awards are finally here.
The Writers Guild of America West (Wgaw) and Writers Guild of America East (Wgae) have announced nominations for outstanding achievement in screenwriting, television, new media, news, radio/audio, and promotional writing for 2023.
Oscar-nominated screenplays for “Barbie,” “The Holdovers,” “May December,” “Past Lives,” “American Fiction,” “Killers of the Flower Moon,” and “Oppenheimer” were expected WGA nominations. However, surprise nods for “Air,” “Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret,” and “Nyad” prove the WGA Awards still have a few tricks up their sleeve. If you’re wondering, “Poor Things” was not eligible because it wasn’t produced under a WGA contract, per a source close to the project.
Despite now taking place one month after the Academy Awards, the WGA nominations still carry weight this season — and could be a deciding factor for final Oscar voting. As IndieWire’s Anne Thompson predicted,...

“Abbott Elementary” is back in the Emmy race again with its sophomore season after achieving multiple awards successes at the Golden Globes and Screen Actors Guild Awards. In its first Emmy outing, the show was a threat to win Best Comedy Series, having picked up writing and casting awards, along with a Best Supporting Actress victory for Sheryl Lee Ralph. This year it added to its tally with an additional nomination, garnering eight against last year’s seven, and all notably for a full network season of 22 episodes. Read on for a closer look at “Abbott Elementary’s” eight Emmy nominations.
Just like last year, “Abbott Elementary” is the only broadcast network show cited in the Best Comedy Series race (and all top series races for that matter) about the lives of teachers being documented at an underfunded elementary school that is predominantly Black. Members of the striking Writers Guild of America voiced their frustrations about the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers’ latest attempts to resume negotiations following a meeting Friday that was designed to determine if there was a path forward. The guild informed members Friday — day 95 of the strike — that the talks with the group that represents the studios and streamers produced no agreement.
Included in the update to WGA members was the union’s summary of the issues both sides planned to bring back to the table when negotiations formally resume.
According to the Writers Guild memo, the AMPTP is seeking to use the deal that the Directors Guild of America agreed to earlier this summer as a template for shared issues like pay increases and expressed a willingness to increase their offer on a few writer-specific TV minimums — but not such core writer issues as the minimum size...

Abbott Elementary had a solid day in terms of Emmy nominations. Quinta Brunson received a well-deserved nomination for Leading Actress. Sheryl Lee Ralph, Janelle James, and Tyler James Williams also received recognition for their supporting work. With that said, the sitcom deserved more than the eight nominations and one of the most glaring omissions is their writing staff. Brunson and her diverse writing team - including Brittani Nichols, Kate Peterman, and Ava Coleman (unrelated to the character in the show) to name a few - have made great television for the last two seasons while upping the episode total from 13 to 22 while keeping the quality strong. Heck, Brunson won the Emmy for Outstanding Writing for the show’s pilot just last year. Studios do not seem to appreciate their writers’ work like should, hence the now more than two-month strike. Regardless, Abbott Elementary would not be an A-plus, award-worthy comedy...

Besides TV Academy Chairman and CEO Frank Scherma’s brief reference to “the ongoing guild negotiations” at the top of the nominations announcement, today has been mostly Emmy business as usual, with television industry types and fans celebrating the ones who landed nominations and lamenting those who were snubbed.
But this is not a typical Emmy nominations day. Far from it. The 2023 Emmy nominations were announced two and a half months into a WGA strike, just hours before writers may be joined by actors in the work stoppage as AMPTP and SAG-AFTRA’s negotiations are currently set to conclude tonight.
As writer Brittani Nichols wrote on Twitter this morning shortly after landing her first Emmy nomination as part of the producing team of Outstanding Comedy Series nominee Abbott Elementary, “because of the ongoing writers’ strike, my ability to enjoy this accomplishment has become more complex than usual.”

For striking writers nominated for Emmys this year, the recognition is bittersweet. It’s an accomplishment that many strive for, but as members of the WGA continue their 10th week on the picket lines, the accolades ring hollow. Awards are nice, sure, but they don’t ensure the financial and professional stability that the WGA is fighting for.
Brittani Nichols, a WGA strike captain who is nominated for her work on Abbott Elementary, acknowledged what she called a very “complicated celebration” in a post on Twitter:...

Even with the institution of gender neutral categories in the acting and supporting acting fields, everything old is new again as the Seventh Annual Black Reel Television Awards (BoltsTV) announced the list of this year’s nominees for recognition. Two names were still returning favorites to the nominations field which also included one record-breaking repeat performance and one surprising new entrant to challenge them all.
The Best Man: The Final Chapters secured its place in Black Reel Award history, with eighteen nominations, the most by any program ever in a single year. The Final Chapters, the ground-breaking mini-series that brought back all of the actors from the previous two movies, also ushered showrunner Malcolm D. Lee to three award nominations of his own for writing and directing in the series.

Picketers gathered outside Warner Bros. in Burbank today found themselves buoyed by a unique presence: Flavor Flav. The hip-hop icon-turned-reality star showed up to cheers from the assembled WGA supporters.
Dressed in a festive yellow-and-blue track suit and wearing a demure (for him) red clock around his neck, the Public Enemy also brought a boombox and blasted the group’s classic “Fight the Power.”
Possibly even better, Flav brought a lot of food.
“A true spread of burgers and pizzas at Warner Bros courtesy of Flava Flav!” wrote Abbott Elementary writer-producer Brittani Nichols on Twitter above a photo of the rapper delivering at least a dozen boxes of grub.

The WGA strike and its work-stoppage left thousands of writers with an indefinite amount of free time to fill their days. Some are spending it on the picket lines, while others are tending to their personal lives. On May 10, close to 400 striking writers did both by mixing picketing and pleasure at the inaugural “Strike Up a Romance,” an inclusive, 21+ singles picket and party.
The event — co-hosted by a team of Hollywood scribes including Lj Matchmaking’s Jaydi Samuels Kuba and Lauren Rosenberg with Debby Wolfe, Marcos Luevanos and Deanna Shumaker — kicked off with a four-hour protest at the Universal Studios gates followed by an evening mixer over margaritas at Roadside Taco on Ventura Boulevard. Name tags and colored markers helped scribes signal their dating preferences (pink for interested in women, blue for men, purple for people and red for “wing person”) while the circumstances provided the social lubricant.

The writers strike took to the skies of Los Angeles on Monday, as a plane flew around all of the major production studios with a banner that read, “Pay the writers, you AI-holes.”
What started out as a joke among friends quickly became a reality — and a show of union solidarity — when writer and director Jacob Reed shared the idea on social media.
“Mostly, there’s just so many great signs. I was like, ‘Someone should put one of these in the air. Is that possible? Could you get a skywriter?’ And it started as a joke on my ‘friends only’ Instagram. I had enough friends immediately just be like, ‘Yes, I would chip in. Yes. Tell me what you need,'” he told Deadline while on the picket line at Paramount on Monday.

The WGA Writers Strike has officially begun and the picket lines have formed across Hollywood and New York City. This halt means that many scripted projects will inevitably go dark, resulting in a Hollywood shutdown not seen since Covid, and not felt since the last WGA strike took place 15 years ago. Variety will keep readers updated with a rolling list of everything that has been put on hold as a result of the strike, which went into effect Tuesday. For more information about the strike, check out Variety’s Faq primer on what it means for the industry.
Update: “Family Guy” and “American Dad” updates added.
Late-night Shows Go Dark. ABC’s “Jimmy Kimmel Live,” CBS’ “The Late Show,” and NBC’s “Tonight” and “Late Night” are all going on hiatus and repeats will be shown. HBO will also cease live production of “Real Time with Bill Maher” and “Last Week Tonight” with John Oliver.

Law enforcement to horn-blowing strike supporters: you may be breaking the law, man!
An electronic sign went up as early as Wednesday outside of Warner Bros in Burbank that warns drivers that excessive horn use violates 27001 of the California Vehicle Code. The law enforces “reasonably necessary” horn blowing to insure safe operation of other vehicles. Otherwise, “the horn shall not otherwise be used, except as a theft alarm system.”
There’s no mention of whether it’s totes fine to use it as a way to show WGA solidarity.
Whether law enforcement will actually ticket those who lean too heavily on their horns is another matter. Thousands of cars drive along Olive Avenue throughout the day and a good portion like to share the love to the picket line. As one WGA member says on Twitter, “we can’t help that people love us.”

Alfred Hitchcock once said that "to make a great film you need three things -- the script, the script and the script." Now, for the eighth time since the 1950s, Hollywood is learning this lesson the hard way, as the Writers Guild of America has officially been on strike since May 2, 2023.
In a statement announcing the strike, which followed "six weeks of negotiations with Netflix, Amazon, Apple, Disney, Discovery-Warner, NBC Universal, Paramount and Sony under the umbrella of the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP)," the WGA said that it was driven by the companies' creation of "a gig economy inside a union workforce," and that the AMPTP had "closed the door on their labor force and opened the door to writing as an entirely freelance profession."

The WGA Strike is in full swing, and some of America’s biggest TV shows already feel the squeeze. Many late-night talk show fans will have noticed their shows have gone dark. Networks are showing reruns during the strike. Saturday Night Live is on strike as well. There are a lot of big TV shows and miniseries that are being affected by the strike.
Some of them are even cutting into their season’s episode count. Meaning that if the WGA (Writers Guild of America) and the AMPTP (Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers) don’t reach an agreement soon, their season might be shorter than originally planned.
This Writers’ Strike – the last one was in 2007-08 – has resulted from the entertainment industry’s steady migration towards streaming platforms and studios failing to adapt employment contracts to the changing times. The issues run the gamut from how much writers...

“Abbott Elementary” writer Brittani Nichols blasted the industry in a lengthy Twitter thread on Tuesday for becoming “absolute dog s—” for Writers Guild of America members.
Nichols shared a picture of a chart which showed that 98% of staff writers and 95% of story editors in the WGA were working at minimum wage during the 2021-2022 season, up 12 percentage points and 14 percentage points from the 2013-2014 season.

We had the privilege and joy of speaking with Brittani Nichols, one of the writers of Abbott Elementary, to ask some of the burning questions the fans have about the show.
And we got answers, y'all!
The interview was engaging, and it ultimately shed light on how the writers decide the direction of the storyline and what to look forward to in the future of Abbott Elementary.
Janine and Gregory? Will they? Or won't they? Oh, my gosh! First of all, they're so socially awkward. So it's almost a little painful to watch every week. How are you all handling that? Do you listen to the fan's input, or how are you all determining the pace of that relationship?
The pace of that relationship, I think, is completely determined by Quinta; she comes into the beginning of the season, and then it's like, okay, at the beginning of the season,...

Writers had to share the spotlight with independent filmmakers and sound designers last night, but they’ll have it all to themselves tonight when the 75th annual Writers Guild of America awards are officially unveiled.
The WGA Awards took place in concurrent ceremonies tonight at New York’s Edison Ballroom and Los Angeles’ Fairmont Century Plaza. The Writers Guild of America West (Wgaw) and the Writers Guild of America, East (Wgae) labor unions represent writers in motion pictures, television, cable, digital media, and broadcast news.
Michelle Buteau was hosting from New York and said she felt “luckier than Pete Davidson’s dick” to be presiding over the ceremony. Her raucous monologue included lines such as, “Tom Cruise is more of a ‘Bottom Gun’ than a ‘Top Gun.'”

Sunday’s 75th Writers Guild of America Awards will conclude the guild season (and a four-guild kudos weekend). Will they portend good things to come at the Oscars for the winners?
“Everything Everywhere All at Once,” written by Daniel Kwan & Daniel Scheinert, and “Women Talking,” written by Sarah Polley, are projected to win the Best Original Screenplay and Best Adapted Screenplay prizes, respectively. The caveat, of course, is that neither is facing its top Oscar competition at WGA due to the guild’s eligibility requirements. Martin McDonagh‘s “The Banshees of Inisherin” script, which won the Golden Globe and BAFTA, is Awol in original, as is Oscar nominee “Triangle of Sadness.” And BAFTA’s adapted screenplay champ “All Quiet on the Western Front,” written by Edward Berger, Lesley Paterson and Ian Stokell, is ineligible, along with Oscar nominee “Living.”

Angela Bassett was the top winner at the NAACP Image Awards taking the trophy for Entertainer of the Year. The star had previously won this year for Outstanding Actress in a Drama Series for 9-1-1 and Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture for her work on Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, which took the award for Outstanding Motion Picture.
One of the big surprises of the night was Will Smith winning the Outstanding Actor award for Emancipation. The actor was not in attendance and category presenter Janelle Monáe accepted the trophy on his behalf.
Brittney Griner appeared on stage with their wife and made a call to continue fighting for detainees overseas.
Quinta Brunson’s Abbott Elementary continues to be a favorite winning Outstanding Comedy Series, Viola Davis took an award for Outstanding Actress in film for The Woman King and Nicco Annan won Outstanding Actor in a Drama Series for P-Valley.
