Hulu is not proceeding with a second season of its original drama series Black Cake, starring Adrienne Warren and Mia Isaac. The news is not surprising as it’s been 10 months since Season 1 ended its run on the streamer.

This marks a formal resolution for the series, from Women of the Movement creator Marissa Jo Cerar, Oprah Winfrey‘s Harpo Films and Aaron Kaplan‘s Kapital Entertainment, whose fate had been sealed for months. It didn’t necessarily have to be — I’d heard chatter that Netflix was interested in picking up the acclaimed drama but the inquiry didn’t go far as program relocations from one major streamer to another are very rare — and complicated — in the era of streaming wars.

Netflix had been among the original suitors for the project, which landed at Hulu in 2021 after a bidding war.

It’s one and done for Hulu’s Black Cake, which will not be back for a second season at the streamer, TVLine has learned.

Two beloved HBO series are over.

I May Destroy You and We Are Who We Are -- both envisioned as limited series -- will not become ongoing series, it has been announced.

HBO boss Casey Bloys revealed the news in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter.

While both were limited series, HBO has a knack for finding ways to bring those types of shows back for additional seasons.

In recent memory, the premium cabler has extended limited series such as Big Little Lies and Perry Mason, but it seems like the door is closed on both of the above shows returning.

"Luca Guadagnino is off doing other projects, so I don't know. There are no plans at the moment for Season 2," Bloys told THR of a potential We Are Who We Are Season 2.

"There's no update on Watchmen. And on I May Destroy You, Michaela Coel is thinking about what she wants to do next.

To celebrate the release of We Are Who We Are, the new acclaimed drama series which starts this week on BBC, we sat down with one of the show’s impressive ensemble to find out why so many people are already talking about it.

Faith Alabi is one of the UK’s brightest young actors, already featuring in Vera and Grantchester, and forms part of the show’s incredible array of talent, all brought together by Oscar-nominated director Luca Guadagnino, who directs the entire series.

Talking to us about her experiences on the show, Alabi tells us about working with the acclaimed director, working in the unique world of army base camps as well as her character Jenny, whose warmth and energy are severely tested during the series as she comes to terms with her pathway in life.

In the third episode of “We Are Who We Are,” Luca Guadagnino’s living teen travelogue, two young high schoolers lay face up in a canoe. Fraser (Jack Dylan Grazer) is reading a book of poetry, and his new friend Caitlin (Jordan Kristine Seamón) asks him why — when you’re an American living abroad, laying under the warm Italian sun, floating mere inches from cool water, why spend your time reading poetry?

“The same reason I hate your clothing,” Fraser snaps back, referencing his designer t-shirts and her sporty apparel. “It’s fast fashion. [With my clothing,] I’m looking for something that means something. It’s the same with poetry. Every word means something.”

Being a teenager is a complicated web of emotions. 

With teenage dramas filled with more cliches as the years have passed, We Are Who We Are is here to prove that there is still life left in the genre. 

It makes sense, then, that Call Me By Your Name director Luca Guadagnino is behind the series because his immersive way of telling the story on-screen translates very well. 

With shots that would typically be reserved for movies, every single beat of We Are Who We Are tells a wonderfully nuanced story, and that extends to the scenes in which there isn't much action going on. 

This style of direction comes with a lot of caveats, and those mostly come down to the actors at the wheel of the story.  There's no sense in utilizing sub-par actors who cannot carry the show, and We Are Who We Are has an astoundingly talented cast.

Updated: Academy Award-nominated “Call Me By Your Name” director Luca Guadagnino’s new series “We Are Who We Are” is heading to youth-skewing channel BBC Three in the U.K.

The HBO/Sky Italia co-production, which was acquired from distributor Fremantle, tells the story of two American kids who live on a U.S. military base in Italy. Jack Dylan Grazer stars as shy 14-year-old Fraser, who moves from New York to Veneto with his mothers, Sarah (Chloë Sevigny) and Maggie (Alice Braga), who are both in the U.S. Army.

Further cast includes Jordan Kristine Seamón, Spence Moore II, Kid Cudi, Faith Alabi, Francesca Scorsese, Ben Taylor, Corey Knight, Tom Mercier and Sebastiano Pigazzi.

Variety understands that while the project is technically a co-production with Sky, the pay TV operator only has exclusive rights for Italy. As such, BBC has picked up the exclusive U.K. premiere rights. The series premieres on HBO on Sept.

Academy Award-nominated Luca Guadagnino brings his unique cinematic style to television for the first time with the eight-episode series We Are Who We Are, debuting Monday, September 14 (10:00–11:00 P.M. Et/Pt) on HBO.

A story about two American kids who live on a U.S. military base in Italy, the series explores friendship, first-love, identity, and immerses the audience in all the messy exhilaration and anguish of being a teenager – a story which could happen anywhere in the world, but in this case, happens in this little slice of America in Italy.

The series was an official selection of the 2020 Cannes Film Festival Directors’ Fortnight.

According to Deadline, Suspiria and Call Me By Your Name director Luca Guadagnino is making the jump to HBO. Guadagnino will write, direct, and showrun We Are Who We Are, a coming-of-age story about two American teenagers who live on an American military base in Italy.

We Are Who We Are is being produced by Lorenzo Mieli and Mario Gianani of The Young Pope producer Wildisde. Guadagnino, Nick Hall, Sean Conway, Riccardo Neri and Francesco Melzi d’Eril will also produce. Paolo Giordano and Francesca Manieri will write alongside Guadagnino.
