She graduated from the MFA screenwriting & directing program at Columbia University and received the 'Outstanding Directorial Achievement' award in Women's Category at the DGA 2016 Student Film Awards for her short film How Far She Went (2016). Ugla is the first Icelandic female director to become a member of the Directors Guild of America.
