Prolific television director David Von Ancken, who also helmed the feature Seraphim Falls, passed away July 26 at his home in Agoura Hills, CA after a two-year battle with aggressive stomach cancer. He was 56.
David Von Ancken, known lovingly as “Dva,” was born in New York on December 5, 1964. His career got off to a hot start with the 2001 short Bullet In the Brain, starring Tom Noonan and Dean Winters, which Von Ancken wrote and directed. It won Universal/Hypnotic Films’ Million Dollar Film Festival as well as numerous other festival awards and opened the doors for Von Ancken to embark on a directing career.
He became a sought-after — and beloved — episodic director who worked on some three dozen series over the past two decades, including Oz, Without a Trace, The Shield, Gossip Girl, The Vampire Diaries, The Mentalist, Person of Interest, The Following, Intelligence, House of Lies, MacGyver, The Crossing and The Purge.

Rob Grant's killer horror flick Harpoon is getting quite the luxery treatment for its Canadian Bluray and DVD release next month. When maladjusted Jonah (Munro Chambers) is attacked by his hot-headed best friend Richard (Christopher Gray) - who believes Jonah and his long-term girlfriend Sasha (Emily Tyra) are sleeping together - the caustic bond between the three friends is quickly called into question. Once Jonah and Sasha convince Richard that the allegations are false, Richard apologizes by taking them on a pleasure cruise on his fancy new yacht. After an accident renders the boat inoperable, Richard soon discovers that the affair was in fact, real. Harpoon is an indie title, that has been making the festival rounds. Out today on Blu-ray (U.S.), this film has also been showing through a limited theatrical release, in North America. The film involves a strange love triangle, in which three friends turn against each other on the high seas. Partially shot in Canada and Belize, the film centrally stars: Brett Gelman, Munro Chambers and Emily Tyra. Now, there is some word that the film will show in a few theatres, in the Great White North, with a new clip debuting today. The clip is titled "Seagull Blood" and can be found below. The new clip shows the three friends, near exhaustion. They have captured their lunch, but begin to eat it raw? Very surreal, these three friends will need to find land soon. Harpoon is a 775 Media Corp production. Dread and Epic Pictures will continue to show the film in U.

Prolific Canadian writer-director Rob Grant, who’s made five features and one documentary in the last decade, once again puts a limited setting and budget to resourceful use in “Harpoon.” This thriller about three none-too-loyal friends adrift on a yacht made a splash at Fantasia (after a lower-key Rotterdam premiere) with its genre-fan-friendly mix of grisly action and jaunty black comedy.
That balance was particularly successful in Grant’s 2012 “Mon Ami,” wherein two would-be kidnappers kept bungling their way to an ever-higher accidental body count. His latest is slicker but also more glibly mean-spirited, with characters it’s hard to care about and some twists that seem more contrived than clever — or credible. Nonetheless, . It opens in a few U.S. theaters Oct. 4, followed a few days later by Blu-ray and Tvod release.

Writer/director Rob Grant wastes zero time getting us in the right frame of mind with Brett Gelman’s perfectly sardonic voice narrating an auspiciously violent collision of three close friends caught in a lovers’ misunderstanding. Harpoon‘s first scene provides effect—a stranded yacht in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean with “Sos” duct taped to the deck—while the second supplies cause as Jonah (Munro Chambers) gets his face punched in by best friend Richard (Christopher Gray) with the latter’s long-term partner Sasha (Emily Tyra) imploring him to stop. Move those temperamental seeds of mistrust to a boat’s tight quarters and we can guess why the vessel will eventually find itself in distress. The question then becomes which, if any, of those passengers will be alive to accept help.
The misunderstanding: Richard thinks Jonah and Sasha are having an affair. It stems from texts found on...

When their yacht breaks down in isolated ocean waters, three "friends" find out just how much they really hate each other (and what they're capable of doing to each other) in Rob Grant's Harpoon. With the dark comedy coming out in select cinemas and on VOD this October from Dread, we caught up with co-writer/director Rob Grant to discuss assembling his game cast, finding a shooting location at the last minute, the challenges of filming on the water (especially in an area filled with curious kayakers), getting Brett Gelman involved as the movie's narrator, and exploring the "darker side of human behavior."
Thanks for taking the time to catch up with us, Rob, and congratulations on Harpoon! How and when did you get the idea for Harpoon?

Rob Grant's latest thriller Harpoon is the latest entry into the fine collection of movies which take place in one location. In this case, we have a trio of friends on a yacht in the middle of the open ocean.
Richard (Christopher Gray), Jonah (Munro Chambers) and Sasha (Emily Tyra) are long-time friends with a ton of baggage. Richard is loaded and kind of a dick who is also generous to his friends. Sasha is a nurse and also Richard's long-time girlfriend while Jonah is a struggling with the fact that his parents were disappointed in him and because they died during a trip he bought for them; he also feels a little guilty.
Harpoon opens with an ugly fight that then turns into a day trip on Richard's yachts as a feeble attempt to make amends. The trio's day trip turn...

A lean, mean thriller with pitch-black humor pumping through its veins, Harpoon has friendship on its mind. Throughout life, friendships are forged on various foundations of need and utility, but sometimes it’s simply a matter of having grown up together. As you get older and drift apart, that foundation can become weak and precarious. That’s the type of friendship in focus here, where three friends are bound by their lengthy history, but perhaps shouldn’t be. When the trio are left stranded in the middle of the ocean after their yacht breaks down, both their friendships and their lives are tested in harrowing ways.

"Better than Titanic!" Yellow Veil Pictures has debuted an official promo trailer for an indie dark comedy horror thriller titled Harpoon, the latest feature from Canadian filmmaker Rob Grant. Rivalries, dark secrets, and sexual tension emerge when three best friends find themselves stranded on a yacht in the middle of the ocean due to suspicious circumstances. Sounds a bit like Holiday or The Boat, but maybe not entirely. Starring Christopher Gray, Munro Chambers, and Emily Tyra. The lost-at-sea trope usually plays out as a horror, thriller, drama or a combination of the three but comedy isn't, generally speaking, thrown into the mix.

Starring Munro Chambers (Turbo Kid), Emily Tyra (Code Black), and Christopher Gray ("The Mist"), the movie is described as a "dark comedy about the rivalries, dark secrets, and sexual tension that amount when three best friends find themselves stranded on a yacht in the middle of the ocean under suspicious circumstances."
Though the first teaser trailer doesn't really provide much in the way of anything story-wise, I do love that it plays nothing like a comedy and therefore, I'm intrigued.

Spoiler Alert: This article contains details about tonight’s series finale of Code Black.
If you are going to go out, go out with a bang — that seemed to be the sentiment for the Code Black series finale tonight on CBS.
The medical drama was not short on the drama as it stacked intense, near-death moments in and outside of Angels Memorial. The Season 3-ending episode, appropriately titled “The Business of Saving Lives,” also served up some emotional connections with the many struggling relationships in the series — mainly Marcia Gay Harden’s Dr. Leanne Rorish and foster daughter Ariel (Emily Alyn Lind).
The episode is told somewhat out of order, starting with an airplane crashing into Angels Memorial. It then backtracks to the events leading up to that crash — and boy oh boy is there a lot.

All good things must come to an end.
But first, you have to set up the exit strategy. Code Black Season 3 Episode 12 did an admirable job of that. Maybe a bit too admirable. A missing teenager, a doctor on a psych hold, a floundering surgical resident, an oedipal confrontation...that's a lot to wrap up in a mere forty-five minutes.
It's all about the pacing. We all remember eighth-grade literature, rising and falling action. The penultimate episode of a season is always about climbing the last stage of the last peak. It's all about the setup.
But sometimes writers bite off more than they can chew. Or more than we can swallow anyway. There were several plots that could have been axed for clarity, that did nothing to substantially move the story forward.

In its freshman installment, the Code Black TV show earned low ratings for a CBS TV series. Instead of cancelling though, the network renewed it, with the requisite cast changes. Its numbers fell further last year, but it still wasn't cancelled, probably thanks to licensing deal concessions. Will the third season see the audience grow or further diminish, and if so, how low can it go? Will Code Black be cancelled or renewed for season four? Stay tuned. **Status update belowA CBS medical drama, Code Black stars Marcia Gay Harden, Luis Guzmán, Rob Lowe, Boris Kodjoe, Harry Ford, Benjamin Hollingsworth, William Allen Young, Emily Tyra, Noah Gray-Cabey, Emily Alyn Lind, and Moon Bloodgood. Angels Memorial is closing its doors. CBS has cancelled its Code Black TV show after three seasons. Creator and showrunner Michael Seitzman has already confirmed the Code Black cancellation. Although the production utilized the extraordinary measures of amputating some original series regulars (Raza Jaffrey and Bonnie Somerville) and grafting on a big name (Rob Lowe), the patient eventually succumbed to acute ratings anemia. CBS has pulled the plug on medical drama “Code Black” after three seasons.
Series creator and showrunner Michael Seitzman first broke the news on Twitter.
“Dear #CodeBlack fans, the sad news came today that we were cancelled,” he wrote. “It’s been a true joy to make this show and watch your response every week. Thank you for all of your passion. Truly, our best episodes have yet to air. We hope you’ll watch and enjoy them. We made them for you.”
The series takes place in the fictional Angels Memorial Hospital, where the high number often outnumbered the limited resources available to doctors and patients, creating a situation known in some hospitals as a “code black.”
It stars Marcia Gay Harden, Boris Kodjoe, Harry Ford, Benjamin Hollingsworth, Emily Tyra, William Allen Young, Noah Gray-Cabey, Emily Alyn Lind, Moon Bloodgood, Luis Guzmán, and Rob Lowe. Michael Seitzman, David Marshall Grant,...

CBS medical drama Code Black will not return for a fourth season. Creator/showrunner Michael Seitzman revealed the news in a note to fans early Thursday on Twitter.
“The sad news came today that we were cancelled,” Seitzman wrote. “It’s been a true joy to make this show and watch your response every week. Thank you for all of your passion. Truly, our best episodes have yet to air. We hope you’ll watch and enjoy them. We made them for you.”

The series returned April 25 to soft numbers, with its Season 3 premiere down 33% compared with last season’s debut. It came down to the wire last year, with the show getting a last-minute Season 3 renewal, as it did for Season 2. Because of the late start, the network this year postponed the renewal decision until after the upfronts.

The decision not to renew for a fourth season was not a surprise. Seitzman wrote that the season finale was written as a series ender. “We always suspected this would be the last season. We wrote it to end that way,” he tweeted.

Created by Seitzman, Code Black took place in the busiest, most notorious ER in the nation, where the staggering influx of patients outweighed the limited resources available to the doctors and nurses whose job is to treat them all – creating a condition known as Code Black.
Marcia Gay Harden starred along with Boris Kodjoe, Harry Ford, Benjamin Hollingsworth, William Allen Young, Emily Tyra, Noah Gray-Cabey, Emily Alyn Lind and Moon Bloodgood, along with Luis Guzmán and Rob Lowe.
The series was produced by ABC Television Studios in association with CBS Television Studios. Seitzman executive produced with David Marshall Grant, Rob Bowman, Marti Noxon, Linda Goldstein Knowlton, Ryan McGarry and Mike Weiss.

Updated May 24 at 7:31 a.m. Pt with “Code Black” canceled by CBS.
Is “Ghosted” coming back?
That’s a question on viewers’ minds as upfronts week comes to a close, with Fox, ABC, NBC, CBS and The CW all having announced their fall programming schedules as of Thursday. ‘Cause some of those slates have holes in them, meaning the statuses of almost half a dozen shows on broadcast television are still up in the air.
Look, we can accept the fact that not every series will be saved like “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” — not every show should be. But come on, networks — minus ABC and The CW, who have already killed or renewed everything they’re going to — fans need to hear one way or another whether their favorite programs will be returning this fall, especially for ones that have a crazy-devoted fanbase.

Well, that was different.
A patient's tumor took us all to a musical review on Code Black Season 3 Episode 2. This isn't the first time that the showrunners have shown their theater geek sides, but I think it was my favorite.
The brightly colored song and dance routines worked precisely because they were hallucinations. It's not a new approach, but it is an effective one.
As fun as the intro scene was, I preferred Noa's ballet scene. Not only did Emily Tyra get to show off her skills, but it was a better representation of what was really happening.

Dr. Avila still hasn't grown on me, and I doubt many of you are impressed with the wannabe documentarian. He may have managed to put the camera down and practice some medicine, but it didn't do anything for his personality.

Et's Leanne Aquilera recently caught up with a few of the show's stars around the set's craft services table, who dished on how they stay so fit around so much delicious junk food.

However, if he could eat anything he wanted from crafty without consequence, it would be pre-packaged cookies and cream cheese danishes. Unfortunately for Lowe, he's stuck eating fresh fruit.

We have a lot of casting news and even something a bit smelly to talk about. Really!
Jay Harrington joins Code Black Season 2 in a key recurring role as the most respected neurosurgeon in Los Angeles, Dr. Leo Fields.
Word is, Fields will be forced to operate on one of the major characters.
Forced sure is a strong word. Will it be Mike, or will someone else on staff suffer from a head injury?
Harrington is known for his comedy on the brilliant but canceled too soon Better Off Ted and more recently Benched and Hot in Cleveland.
He joins other Season 2 newbies including Rob Lowe, Noah Gray-Cabey, Emily Tyra and Kathleen Rose Perkins.
Amazon has scored the rights to the upcoming Robert De Niro/Julianne Moore series.
According to Deadline, the series, a drama, possibly about the mafia, is written by David O. Russell, and has received a two-season order of eight episodes each.

CBS medical drama Code Black has plucked Rob Lowe as a new series regular, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
The veteran actor, who recently starred in the doomed Fox comedy The Grinder before it was canned after only one season, has joined Code Black as Col. Ethan Willis, a “doctor in the U.S. Military’s prestigious Combat Casualty Care research program who has been pulled out of a combat hospital in Afghanistan and embedded at Angels Memorial to teach what the military has learned about combat medicine.”
Not one to play by the rules, Lowe’s newcomer draws the ire of Angels Memorial’s finest doctors barring Dr. Leanne Rorish (Marcia Gay Harden), who welcomes his brash, aggressive modus operandi with open arms.
Indeed, the addition of Lowe is a sign of CBS’ minor overhaul to the Code Black series, and over the past few days the network has recruited Heroes alum Noah Gray-Cabey,...

Code Black wasn't an out of the gate hit.
But it really put the pedal to the metal as far as the medical drama was concerned. Every week, Code Black Season 1 had a very strong medical case, sometimes involving their own characters.

His character will be introduced on the second season premiere on September 28.

This drama follows emotionally wounded ballerina, Claire Robbins (Sarah Hay), as she joins New York's American Ballet Company (ABC). Claire's talent and ambitions are in conflict with her self-destructive nature. Rudderless, Claire navigates this new, dysfunctional world, even as she is confronted by her past.
The bipolar, bisexual Paul Grayson (Ben Daniels), is founder and artistic director of the ABC. Once a celebrated dancer, Paul is driven to make ABC the premier ballet company, and he sees Claire as a tool in achieving that goal.
