Ethan Coen’s ‘Honey Don’t!’ Gets 6.5-Minute Ovation In Cannes
Image
Focus Features had the final slot of the Official Selection here in Cannes this evening with Ethan Coen’s Honey Don’t!, a dark comedy reuniting Margaret Qualley with the filmmaker on the heels of last year’s Drive-Away Dolls. Coen & Co. received a 6.5-minute ovation in the wee hours of the morning.

“Fun finish to the festival, yah?” said Coen to a lively crowd.

“It’s short for a movie that started after midnight,” added Coen about the movie’s 90-minute running time, “very humane!”

Qualley takes on the titular role of Honey O’Donahue, a small-town private investigator who delves into a series of strange deaths tied to a mysterious church led by a preacher played by Chris Evans.

Aubrey Plaza and Charlie Day also feature prominently in the cast, which additionally includes Billy Eichner, Lera Abova, Jacnier, Gabby Beans, Talia Ryder, Kristen Connolly, Lena Hall, Don Swayze,...

‘Honey Don’t!’ Review: Margaret Qualley, Aubrey Plaza and Chris Evans Get Stranded in Ethan Coen’s Wayward Whodunit
Image
In Honey Don’t!, the latest film in Ethan Coen and Tricia Cooke’s intended lesbian B-movie trilogy, Margaret Qualley plays Honey O’Donahue, a tough but glamorous private investigator in Bakersfield, California. Honey is typically in the business of infidelity, taking cases involving suspicious spouses and their philandering partners. But at the start of Coen’s prankish film, which premiered at Cannes and will be released in theaters by Focus Features on Aug. 22, the sleuth finds herself drawn into a higher-stakes mystery. The death of a local woman leads Honey down a slippery path involving religious cults, megalomaniacal pastors and an unexpected romance.

For the most part, Honey Don’t! lives in the same thematic universe as Coen’s first solo narrative venture Drive-Away Dolls, which the director also co-wrote with Cooke. In that film, Qualley played a lesbian Lothario, who, after a bad break-up with her police officer girlfriend (Beanie Feldstein...

Famous - Jennie Kermode - 17319
Josh Pafchek
What is fame worth? When you’re a starry-eyed kid, it’s easy to persuade yourself that you’d do anything for a shot at the big time. It’s hardly a revelatory to an adult audience that there are unscrupulous adults ready to take advantage of that, but we talk about it now in a way that we didn’t in the early Nineties. That’s when Famous is set, bringing together elements of real life stories in the tale of Jason Mast (Josh Pafchek), a successful young actor who has had to pay an awful price and is looking for a solution.

The story takes place during a party one night at Jason’s house, attended by various industry figures. There’s Heather (Brooke Butler), a successful but still not very well established actress whose agent (Rosie De Candia) wants her and Jason to become, or at least look like,...
