Young Arthur – bullied at school and struggling with his dad Johnny Vegas – seeks sanctuary at his local pool
Sheffield-based YouTuber Luke Cutforth here ventures into – that dread phrase – long-form content, with a thin slip of YA fantasy (drawn from a novel by Caroline Smailes) about a humiliated schoolboy retrieved from the brink of self-sacrifice. Cutforth clearly knows his way around a camera, which isn’t always the case at the industry’s lower-budget end; with cinematographer Josh Winslade, he makes atmospheric use of his primary location, Manchester’s Victoria Baths, recast as an abandoned spa. Yet the pacing proves sluggish, and the adaptation broadly unpersuasive: a fifth-former’s creative writing assignment, with clunky exposition and potential elements of autobiography that elicit sporadic cringes.
Cutforth has engineered one noteworthy casting coup. We know young Arthur (James Tarpey) has it bad because he’s being raised by Johnny Vegas, welded into a...

Exclusive: Freeform has passed on its drama pilot Breckman Rodeo, from writer Steve Lerner, The Americans executive producers/showrunners Joe Weisberg and Joel Fields, and new Freeform corporate sibling FX Productions.
Breckman Rodeo, starring Jess Gabor and Noah Le Gros, was one of three hourlong pilots at Freeform, along with Party of Five and Motherland, all of which had been garnering solid buzz. The Party of Five reboot was the first of the bunch to score a series pickup in February, followed by the witches-themed Motherland: Fort Salem, which was picked up to series in March, leaving Breckman Rodeo as the only outstanding pilot.
The decision to not go forward with it comes a couple of weeks after Lauren Corrao joined Freeform as new head of original programming.

Sci-fi series to be overseen by longtime Coronation Street producer Tony Wood.
Robot Overlords, the UK sci-fi feature starring Gillian Anderson and Ben Kingsley, is to get a spin-off TV series overseen by Tony Wood’s Buccaneer Media.
The agreement, signed with Piers Tempest and Jo Bamford’s Tempo Productions who produced the movie, will see Buccaneer Media create a TV series set in a parallel universe to the original movie, which features a group of survivors following the invasion of Earth by alien robots.
Robert Overlords director Jon Wright announced the adaptation at McM London Comic Con.
Wood is a British drama producer that worked on long-running soap Coronation Street for 12 years as well as Desi Rascals and Nickelodeon’s live action kid’s series House of Anubis.
Wood said the TV series of Robot Overlords would “reimagine” the story “for an international family TV audience”, compariing it to classic British sci-fi brands such as Quatermass...

Robot Overlords took over our cinema screens back in March and now, according to the film’s director Jon Wright, the malignant mechanicals have their beady laser eyes on our tellies. Yes, they’re targeting a small screen spin-off. Wright announced the news at the McM London Comic Con, with word that Tony Wood (a veteran of Coronation Street among other things) will oversee the new show for Piers Tempest and Jo Bamford’s Tempo Productions, who were behind the film in the first place. “This series will really expand the canvas of the robot occupation and we are aiming to make an explosive show that the UK will be very proud of.”Though the film had Gillian Anderson, Ben Kingsley, Callan McAuliffe, James Tarpey and Ella Hunt among its cast, the show will boast a new ensemble and might also march on to TV under a different name. According to wood,...

So much to love in this Brit kiddie sci-fi adventure, with its brilliant concept that really works on a small budget and a real sense of place. I’m “biast” (pro): I’m a big ol’ sci-fi geek
I’m “biast” (con): nothing
(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)
So much to love in this Brit kiddie sci-fi adventure! It’s like classic Doctor Who — you know, like we haven’t gotten much of lately — except without the Doctor, of course. It’s a Ya postapocalyptic adventure not based on a book (it’s an original story). It’s set after the alien invasion, which is when, I’ve always felt, all the really interesting stories exist to be told and yet we haven’t seen many of them. And the AI ETs aren’t here for the water.

Jon Wright on directing Robot Overlords, working with Ben Kingsley and Gillian Anderson, and why he made an 80s-style family film.
Three films in, and Jon Wright is very much a director whose output is worth keeping an eye on. His first full feature, Tormented, was an effective horror with some strong moments, but it was Grabbers where he really struck gold. It remains, along with Tucker & Dale Vs Evil, our favourite horror comedy of recent times. Wright has taken a different turn for his new movie, Robot Overlords, a sci-fi movie aimed at a family audience. And he spared us some time to natter about it...
Can you put into words how you're feeling, on the eve of your film's release?
Well, I'm a bit nervous about the release, as you would be. Hoping it goes well. And I'm reading all the press that people are writing, which I actually think is very interesting.
