As one of, if not the most popular, comic book characters of all time, Batman means a lot of things to a lot of different people. It's probably the reason why DC can't stop imagining alternate versions of him in comics, movies, and television shows, or why James Gunn and Matt Reeves are set to deliver two separate, concurrent takes on the character for Warner Bros.
But whether he's an emo crimefighter for an emo world or the pulp hero featured in the "Caped Crusader" animated series, the basic elements of Batman and Bruce Wayne usually remain the same -- dead parents, deep pockets, dark moods. This is what makes Scott Snyder and Nick Dragotta's "Absolute Batman" arguably the best "Batman" story being told right now. We're approaching a year since DC Comics' Absolute Universe was created, and it’s continued to keep fans intrigued. One of the reasons for that is the new takes on classic comic book characters. Wonder Woman has dived into magic more than physical violence, Superman is unsure of himself, and Absolute Martian Manhunter doesn’t have a physical form. Then there’s Scott Snyder’s Absolute Batman. Bruce Wayne is built like a tank and is friends with people who were his enemies on Earth Prime.

Writer Scott Snyder has been generous with the information about what’s coming in Absolute Batman. For example, when asked, “Which of the classic villains are you most excited to see Batman face off against in the absolute universe?” he said Bane. The Monster from Santa Prisca then debuted in issue No. 9, and it wasn’t disappointing.

There's been reason to doubt "The Batman Part II" would be going forward in the past few years, but the believers are looking vindicated. Writer-director Matt Reeves and his partner Mattson Tomlin announced they'd completed the sequel's script on June 27, 2025. Warner Bros. has since received the script and is apparently quite happy with it. Hence, it's seeming more and more like "The Batman Part II" will make its 2027 release date.
"The Batman" was a nearly three hour-long epic that saw Batman (Robert Pattinson) meet many of his classic foes. The main villain of the movie was the Riddler (Paul Dano), a serial killer out to expose corruption in Gotham. The root of said corruption was mob boss Carmine Falcone (John Turturro), who' served by gangsters like Oz "The Penguin" Cobb (Colin Farrell). Batman also met Selina Kyle/Catwoman (Zoë Kravitz...

So far, Scott Snyder’s Absolute Batman has provided readers with multiple villains from Earth-Prime. Some of them, Harvey Dent (Two-Face), Ozzie (Penguin), Eddie (Riddler), Waylon Jones (Killer Croc), and Selina Kyle (Catwoman), are Bruce Wayne’s friends and not exactly like their Prime-Earth counterparts. Others, Mr. Freeze (who’s the child of Victor Fries), Bane, Black Mask, and The Joker, have all been given upgrades in either wealth, power, skills, or all of the above. Knowing that there’s more of this universe to come, it’s easy to guess more changes will be made and new antagonists to be introduced.
In Absolute Batman No. 8, Waylon was captured by the workers of Ark-m. Previews of issue No. 12 have shown that Waylon has been turned into Killer Croc. But we’re getting ahead of ourselves. Because, while Bruce is trying to find his friend and escape from Ark-m (Bruce is captured in issue No.

There’s no denying that Edi Gathegi’s Mister Terrificstole the show in James Gunn’sSuperman, quickly becoming a fan favorite. Audiences loved seeing this underrated hero finally get the spotlight he deserved, and now, Mister Terrific is leveling up in a big way with a major promotion that’s set to raise his profile even higher.
Thanks to James Gunn’s creative vision and Edi Gathegi’s incredible performance, Mister Terrific is now a name even casual DC fans recognize.
Although Michael Holt first debuted as Mister Terrific in The Spectre #54 (1997) by John Ostrander and Tom Mandrake, he never quite reached the same status as icons like Superman, Batman, or other core Justice League members. That may finally be changing after his standout live-action debut and a major development in the comics, where Holt is now set to lead a new superhero team: the Terrific Ten.

Flashpoint delivered one of the darkest and most brutal versions of the DC Universe ever put to page, reimagining heroes like the Flash and Batman in grim, unthinkable ways. It served as a powerful ‘what-if’ worst-case scenario. But now, DC is proving that things can get even worse with the announcement of their next timeline-shattering event: Impulsepoint.
The Flash #26 by Mark Waid and Christopher Cantwell, with art by Vasco Georgiev, will see Wally West’s Flash and Bart Allen’s Impulse take center stage during the Flash-centric chapter in DC’s upcoming K.O. event.

Warning: Contains Potential Spoilers for Absolute Batman #10 (2025)!Poison Ivy has remained relatively consistent over the years, with only a few tweaks to her origin and character design. However, the Darkseid-created Absolute Universe has completely reimagined the Gotham City Siren, giving her one of her darkest and most disturbing origin stories to date.
Scott Snyder and Nick Dragotta’s Absolute Batman #10 picks up where the last issue left off, with Batman now imprisoned at Ark-m, a black site facility in Gotham, after breaking in to search for his recently missing friend, Waylon Jones. Like the other inmates of Ark-m, Bruce becomes one of their test subjects, undergoing a series of grueling procedures.
The issue shows multiple cycles of Bruce escaping his cell, only to be recaptured by Bane and subjected to another round of experiments. It is during one of these failed breakout attempts that he encounters Poison Ivy... sort of.

DC’s Scott Snyder is a legendary comic writer and is currently known as one of the lead creative forces behind DC’s Absolute Universe comic line. This new imprint has reimagined iconic Justice League heroes and other characters with darker, more hardcore twists in a Darkseid-created world. Sometimes, a single comic book issue stands out above everything else. It can have an attachment to the series itself, but that doesn’t make it any less amazing on its own. The following ten are the best representation of that.
Some of these titles make the list because they’re deep stories that highlight a character. Others are good beginnings to a comic, a story arc, or a coming out for a hero. Let’s begin with this writer’s favorite of the year.

We have already covered the greatest DC Comics ever, as well as various countdowns of the best of the best from Marvel, but let's be real for a second: the indie market has its fair share of seminal comic books too. For many readers, that's where the real magic happens, as creatives play outside of the assigned sandboxes and free from corporate oversight and meddling. The only limit here is where their imagination takes them.
But how do you pick the best comic books outside of Marvel and DC? It isn't an easy task and requires a few considerations. Ultimately, it comes down to being a mix of universally popular series and personal preference, but also analyzing the books' wider influence on pop culture. Did they lead to on-screen adaptations or video games? Did they force the industry to up its game? Those types of questions. In addition to this,...

DC’s radical reinterpretation of Batmanlore, the cornerstone of the publisher’s critically successful Absolute continuity, just dropped a massive piece of lore, implying that Alfred Pennyworth has a personal connection to both the Joker and Slade Wilson, the mercenary better known in mainstream continuity as Deathstroke. While the implications of this teaser remain to be determined, the possibilities have already riled up fan speculation.

James Gunn Names ‘Batman’ and ‘Wonder Woman’ Films as the Most Important Upcoming Stories in His Dcu
The Dcu is currently in a very specific phase ahead of the Superman premiere next month. And while many have said that this movie could make or break the Dcu, Gunn is looking at the future with a lot of optimism.
He’s either sure of the movie’s success or the Dcu doesn’t rely on the success of Superman that much. Regardless of which it is, though, there are many projects in the works, as you probably know.
Among them are the upcoming Batman and Wonder Woman projects, which Gunn just wants to see done right.

As you know, the short-term focus of the Dcu is on Superman and the upcoming Supergirl movie, and potentially the Lanterns series. But, since Gunn aims to create a large and immersive fictional universe, he has to look even further.
He’s either sure of the movie’s success or the Dcu doesn’t rely on the success of Superman that much. Regardless of which it is, though, there are many projects in the works, as you probably know.
Among them are the upcoming Batman and Wonder Woman projects, which Gunn just wants to see done right.

Scott Snyder’s Absolute Batman changed Harvey Dent, Oswald Cobblepot, Edward Nygma, and Waylon Jones and made them friends of Bruce Wayne. While they aren’t villains, they’re not bad guys either. Meanwhile, The Joker is a billionaire who doesn’t laugh or make jokes (his name is supposed to be ironic), Black Mask is a vicious fighter who almost brought Gotham City to the point of no return, and Victor Fries is frozen while his son is the villain of this series. However, one antagonist comic book fans have waited to see in DC Comics’ Absolute Universe is Bane, and they didn’t have to wait too long.
After Black Mask was defeated (issue No. 6 of Absolute Batman), TheJoker tells one of his workers to bring in Bane. Three issues later, say his name, and Bane appears like Joe Hendry. We knew he was coming thanks to a...

DC Comics' Absolute Universe has done an amazing job of slow rolling popular characters from Universe-Prime. For example, in Absolute Superman, writer Jason Aaron brought in Lois Lane and Brainiac perfectly. Then, out of nowhere, Batman villain Ra’s al Ghul debuts as a major villain in this series.
Speaking of the Dark Knight, Scott Snyder’s Absolute Batman brilliantly introduced Bruce Wayne’s enemies in the prime continuity, who are now his friends in this universe. We also see a more dangerous version of Black Mask and a billionaire Joker who doesn't laugh.
In issue No. 9, however, fans finally get another classic Batman character. In this universe, he doesn’t wear tights or run from rooftop to rooftop, but he’s still a hero. Everyone, welcome Dick Grayson to the Absolute Universe. I hope you survive the experience.

Batman has had the fortune of having a fairly illustrious cinematic career. Aside from the odd critical dud like 1995's Batman Forever and 1997's Batman & Robin, the Caped Crusader has generally delivered films that have resonated with both general audiences and comic book diehards. Among that batch of projects, there are two in particular that have soared into the upper echelon of cinemartic greatness: Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight (2008) and Matt Reeves' The Batman (2022).
Both films are revered for their plots, visuals, and most importantly, their takes on Bruce Wayne/Batman. It's difficult to think about which one of the two adaptations could be better than the other, but that's exactly what I want to ask to the community.
The Dark Knight Or The Batman?
Between The Dark Knight and The Batman, which one do you think is the better movie? Trust me, I know, this is difficult.

Bane has long stood as one of Batman’s most iconic villains, instantly recognizable to even the most casual fans. But now, DC is gearing up to reinvent him entirely, and the early teases promise a transformation that could redefine the character forever in the minds of fans.
In May, Scott Snyder and Nick Dragotta sat down with the Comic Book Couples Counseling podcast to discuss their ongoing Absolute Batman series, part of DC’s ever-expanding lineup of titles set in the Darkseid-created world. In this universe, iconic characters have undergone intense reimaginings, with grittier origin stories and designs that match the darker world they now inhabit.

DC Comics’ massively successful Absolute continuity is about to introduce a downright disturbing new take on Batman villain Bane, one who is seemingly able to inflate his muscle mass at will, including inflating to hyperbolically horrifying proportions. Known as “the man who broke the Bat” in DC’s mainstream canon, Absolute Bane seems well-conditioned to carry on that legacy as an all-time great antagonist for the Caped Crusader.
The preview pages for Absolute Batman #9, written by Scott Snyder, with art by Nick Dragotta, introduce Bane, who the synopsis describes as “an old adversary of Alfred’s.”
Though the updated Bane is depicted wearing a version of the character’s signature mask, the absurd degree to which he is able to expand his body in the final frame of the preview makes it clear that this is a totally new take on the villain. Now, fans will have to pick up...

Warning: Contains Spoilers for Absolute Batman #9 (2025)!
26 years ago, Dick “Nightwing” Grayson enrolled in the Blüdhaven Police Academy, marking the beginning of his journey to becoming a cop. This career choice received a mixed fan reception, with some less than keen on the idea of the hero pursuing a civilian path in law enforcement. Some even argued that other public service careers outside of policing would be more fitting for the character, and it looks like they’re about to get their wish.
Thanks to leaked images from Scott Snyder and Nick Dragotta’s Absolute Batman #9, which is set for official release on June 11, 2025, fans have just gotten their first look at the Absolute Universe’s version of Dick Grayson.
For those who haven’t been following DC’s recent storylines, the Absolute Universe is a Darkseid-created world that reimagines DC’s characters with grittier, more hardcore origin stories that reflect the darker world they inhabit.

Take Victor Fries/Mr. Freeze, who is synonymous with his robotic suit (which keeps him at subzero temperatures he needs to survive) and freezing ray. But writer Scott Snyder's ongoing comic series "Absolute Batman" has introduced the most radical reinvention of Freeze yet.

As one of the greatest superheroes ever created, Batman has a special place in the DC Comics canon. Though he's been rebooted, remixed, and reinvented more times than we can count (most recently in Matt Reeves' "The Batman" film and Scott Snyder's Absolute Universe in the comics), he's almost always characterized as a tragic romantic hero who uses his incredible wealth to save a city ravaged by crime and institutional decay. This one-man war on crime, waged without powers, has earned him the respect -- and, more importantly, fear -- of the DC Universe's heroes and villains.
But Batman has made decisions over the decades that are far from respectable. With a desperation to prevent the loss of innocent life, an unparalleled superiority complex, and a pathological distrust of his closest allies, he poses a danger to the world that rivals the most dangerous criminal masterminds.

One of the most recognizable and beloved villains in the history of entertainment, the Joker has dominated the criminal underworld of DC Comics since he first appeared during the industry's Golden Age. Whether he's portrayed cartoonishly, as a maniacal mastermind of malice and mischief, or as a disturbingly plausible psychological terrorist, his appearances in "Batman" stories are consistently memorable.
What makes him so distinct is his peculiar way of carrying out his creatively heinous crimes, always with a flair for the dramatic, a smile, and a grim joke. We've gone through his history in comics, film, and television to find the most horrible things various versions of the clown prince have ever done. While we'll be avoiding some severe tonal outliers, our top 15 choices showcase the Joker at his absolute best - which is to say, his very, very worst.

From the second you venture into Absolute Martian Manhunter No. 1, you're grabbed by the phenomenal artwork and beautiful colors of Javier Rodriguez (Zatanna: Bring Down the House). Then, the story starts. Writer Deniz Camp (Ultimates) begins with philosophical questions of why people do the things they do. For example, “Why do some people become firefighters, and others arsonists?” That’s on top of the immediate hit of an explosion that should have killed the lead character of this story. All of this nearly sensory overload happens in the first few pages.

Things continue to get better as the issue continues, as our lead character (Agent John Jones) starts to realize that something is wrong with him and how he sees the world. There's colorful smoke in places there shouldn't be, and he knows things about people that he shouldn’t.

Absolute Batman #6 arrived in comic book stores earlier this week and ended with another glimpse of The Joker. This world's Clown Prince of Crime was covered in what appeared to be several dead babies as he used their blood to restore his pale skin to a normal shade.
We've already learned that this take on The Joker is extremely wealthy, worldly-wise, and someone who has trained under the world's best teachers and martial arts masters. Oh, and he never laughs.
After Batman foiled his plans for Gotham City, Absolute Batman #6 also saw The Joker task Bane with taking out the Dark Knight. Now, we have a first look at the Absolute version of that villain, and he's even bigger than this reality's hulking Bruce Wayne!
"Bane, the one thing I'll say is he's really big. That's it," writer Scott Snyder told IGN. "People were like, 'Oh, he's going to be small.

That's right, the newest Flashcomic just broke a sales record that's been held for nearly 40 years. There's been a lot of heat on DC Comics' Absolute line over the last few months, and it only grew as its next wave of titles drew closer. Now Absolute Flash has reached a benchmark no one saw coming.
Jeff Lemire and Nick Robles' Absolute Flash #1 only debuted in comic book shops this week, but it's already become a smash success. Per Dcu Updates on X, Lemire has confirmed that his latest title is one of the best-selling comics featuring the Fastest Man Alive, achieving over 180,000 pre-orders.
That alone would be fantastic news, but a sweetner is that, with those numbers,Absolute Flash has become the best-selling Flash comic book since 1987's Flash #1. Interestingly enough, both series featured a major debut for Wally West who was the lead character in both books.

The world of graphic fiction can be roughly divided between Western comics and Japanese manga. Both of them make use of sequential panels with drawings and speech bubbles to tell stories, but aside from that, the two mediums differ a great deal, and readers are going to care about that. Fortunately, it's easy for pop culture consumers to love both, since they both have plenty to offer, but manga evidently has the edge.
Japanese manga has some distinct advantages over comics even in the context of Western nations, where the home field advantage of Marvel, DC, and Dark Horse comics is surprisingly limited. The comic industry is still doing fine in the face of the competition, but nonetheless, it's clear how manga has caught up to and surpassed comics as readers' favorite medium. Some reasons, in particular, explain why reading manga is the stronger option both in terms of the industry and the fiction itself.

What a world we live in.
Who would have thought that Guy Fieri, a TV personality and professional chef notorious for his frosted tips, would join superheroes like Batman and Superman on the front of DC comics? Does the comic have anything to do with Guy Fieri? Nope, but it’s still awesome.
The synopsis for Batman/Superman: World’s Finest reads:
“The Waves Crash! Superman and Batman have a code against killing… but does a king of Atlantis? As the Floronic Man makes his final play for dominion over the seas, Aquaman is forced to react as a warrior, not a superhero — and the consequences will surprise you!”
On the front cover of Batman/Superman: World’s Finest #37, you can see Guy Fieri himself riding inside his legendary 1968 Chevrolet Camaro SS with Batman sipping a drink and Superman munching on a burger. In the background, you can see Guy...

Warning: Contains Potential Spoilers for Absolute Batman #6!
Absolute Batman has cemented himself as the most brutal version of the Dark Knight to date, thanks to a badass costume feature that’s not just brilliant but jaw-droppingly niche. But be warned—this attack is so vicious it’ll have readers wincing in sheer sympathy pain.
Scott Snyder and Nick Dragotta’s Absolute Batman returns with its sixth installment, picking up right where the previous issue left off—featuring the aftermath of the brutal confrontation between Black Mask and the Dark Knight. In the last issue, Batman was literally tossed off a building by Sionis and his Party Animals, suffering a crushing defeat.
However, issue #6 brings Bruce back for round two, as he launches an attack on Black Mask’s yacht. What follows is a high-stakes fight, culminating in a particularly brutal move by Batman, who uses his cowl ears to stab...
