Rex III was a real police dog, Alsation breed, who had retired from the Metropolitan Police force following an injury. During his career, he received bravery medals from the National Canine Defence League and the People's Dispensary for Sick Animals. In 1956, suffering from throat cancer, he was painlessly put to sleep at the age of seven.
