Damon Wayans stars as legendary talk radio host and happily divorced “Poppa” who has his point of view challenged at work when a new female co-host Ivy (Essence Atkins) is hired, and at home where he finds himself still parenting his adult son Junior (Damon Wayans Jr.), a brilliant dreamer who is trying to pursue his passion while being a responsible father and husband. The main cast also includes Tetona Jackson as Poppa’s wife Nina.

Marlon Wayans is set to portray Poppa’s brother Melvin, who is described as a “bit of a ne’er do well who comes to visit the family with a new business idea.” Poppa is quick to warn everyone not to trust him, while Ivy and Junior want to believe he’s changed.

CBS’ Poppa’s House is about to become even more of a Wayans family affair.

Marlon Wayans has signed on for a guest role on the first-year comedy, joining his brother Damon Wayans and nephew Damon Wayans Jr. His episode is scheduled to air in February.

In the installment, Marlon will play Melvin, Poppa’s (Wayans Sr.) ne’er-do-well brother who comes to visit the family and pitch a new business idea. Poppa warns everyone not to trust Melvin, but Ivy (Essence Atkins) and Junior (Wayans Jr.) want to believe he’s changed.

The order stems from strong viewership for the premieres of both new shows. “NCIS: Origins” Episode 1 has been seen by 9 million viewers, while “Poppa’s House” has garnered 6.41 million viewers, according to VideoAmp and internal streaming data. CBS’ newly announced winter schedule features a pair of glaring omissions.

In revealing its midseason lineup on Monday (go here for the full list of premiere dates), the Eye Network confirmed that its Matlock reboot, starring Kathy Bates, and Wayans comedy Poppa’s House have both been pushed to the 2024-25 season.

CBS has ordered a new father-and-son comedy series starring a real-life father and son. The network has greenlighted the Poppa's House series for midseason.

Starring Damon Wayans and Damon Wayans Jr., Poppa's House revolves around a legendary talk radio host and happily divorced man, aka “Poppa” (Damon Wayans). CBS’ primetime schedule for the 2023 and 2024 season has arrived. “Survivor” and “The Amazing Race” will now be moving to 90-minute episodes on Wednesdays. New dramas “Elsbeth” and “Matlock” as well as new comedy “Poppa’s House” will join the previously announced “Tracker” along with 22 other returning shows. Additionally, “Tracker” is set to premiere in the highly coveted post-Super Bowl slot on Sunday, Feb. 11, 2024.

“Elsbeth” will star Carrie Preston as Elsbeth Tascioni, a smart but unconventional attorney who works to corner “brilliant” criminals alongside the NYPD. In partnership with the stoic Officer Kaya Blanke (Carra Patterson), she has to adjust to cleaning up New York after a career in Chicago. “Elsbeth” comes from Michelle and Robert King and is a spinoff of “The Good Wife” and “The Good Fight” that focuses on the titular character. Jonathan Tolins will serve as showrunner.

CBS has given series orders to the Kathy Bates-starring “Matlock” remake, a “Good Wife”-“Good Fight” spin-off starring Carrie Preston and a comedy series led by Damon Wayans Sr. and Damon Wayans Jr.

“Matlock,” produced by CBS Studios, centers on the brilliant septuagenarian Matlock (Bates), who rejoins the workforce at a prestigious law firm and uses her unassuming demeanor and wily tactics to win cases and expose corruption from the inside. The show stars Bates as Madeline Matlock, Skye P. Marshall as Olympia, Jason Ritter as Julian, ”David Del Rio as Billy and Leah Lewis as Sarah.

The drama is executive produced by Jennie Snyder Urman, Joanna Klein, Eric Christian Olsen and John Will. Bates also serves as executive producer alongside Kat Coiro, who directed the pilot.

CBS is betting on familiar faces (and familiar IP) next season, ordering a Good Wife spinoff, a Matlock reboot and a Wayans family affair to series.

First up is Elsbeth, an extension of the Good Wife universe centered on Carrie Preston’s Elsbeth Tascioni. Following a successful career in Chicago, this latest spinoff follows the “astute but unconventional attorney” as she “utilizes her singular point of view to make unique observations and corner brilliant criminals alongside the NYPD,” according to the official logline. Wendell Pierce (Jack Ryan) and Carra Patterson (Turner & Hooch) co-star.

CBS has ordered three new series from this year’s crop of pilots.

The network has handed series orders to Matlock, starring Kathy Bates; The Good Wife spinoff Elsbeth; and the Wayans family comedy, which now is known as Poppa’s House.

The trio will air during the 2023-24 season and will be joined by Tracker, starring Justin Hartley, which formerly was known as The Never Game and was ordered to series in December.

CBS isn’t specifying episode orders, particularly given the current writers strike, but given that all three come from its own studio, the network can be flexible.

It comes after CBS made some space for new titles after axing East New York and True Lies on Tuesday, though it reversed its decision to cancel S.W.A.T., instead bringing the drama back for a seventh and final season.

Kathy Bates will star and executive produce the “Matlock” reboot which follows a now successful Madeline Matlock (Bates) as she rejoins the work force at a prestigious law firm where she uses her unassuming demeanor and wily tactics to win cases and expose corruption from within.

The series also stars Skye P. Marshall as Olympia, Jason Ritter as Julian, David Del Rio as Billy, Leah Lewis as Sarah.

In addition to Bates, Joanna Klein serves as an executive producer for Sutton Street alongside Jennie Snyder Urman, who will also write. Eric Christian Olsen and John Will will executive produce on behalf of Cloud Nine. Kat Coiro directed the pilot and also serves as an executive producer. “Matlock” is produced by CBS Studios.

A USC alum who got his post-graduate degree from UCLA, Wiley served as a creative executive in charge of development on films produced at Warner Bros., Sony, Lionsgate and other studios and the supervising producer and/or unit production manager for more than a dozen theatrical features.

Essence Atkins and Tetona Jackson have signed on to star in the untitled CBS comedy pilot starring Damon Wayans and Damon Wayans Jr., Variety has learned. In addition, Andy Ackerman has signed on to direct the pilot.

The multi-cam pilot was first announced at CBS in February. Per the official logline, “Legendary talk radio host and happily divorced ‘Poppa’ (Wayans) has his point of view challenged at work when a new female co-host (Atkins) is hired, and at home where he finds himself still parenting his adult son (Wayans Jr.), a brilliant dreamer who is trying to pursue his passion while being a responsible father and husband.”

Atkins character is named Dr. Ivy Reed. She is further described as “intelligent, savvy, and bold” and hosts the radio show “Ask Dr. Reed,” where she gives “helpful advice to listeners with a modern approach on life” before she is brought in as Poppa’s new co-host.

Peacock is getting into the holiday spirit with The Housewives of the North Pole, a new original movie starring Kyle Richards (The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills) and Betsy Brandt (Breaking Bad).

The highly-anticipated flick is set to launch on December 9 on the streaming service, and it looks like a lot of fun!

"The Christmas Queens of North Pole, Vermont, Trish (Kyle Richards) and Diana (Betsy Brandt), have won the Best Holiday House decorating competition every year for the past nine years," reads the intriguing synopsis.

"But days before Christmas, a friendship-ending argument sparks a town-wide feud and draws the attention of a national magazine writer hoping to make a name for herself with her scintillating exposé."

It might’ve been a Tuesday night in Hollywood, but the “Boomerang” cast, crew and exec. producer Lena Waithe were ready to celebrate “Waithe Wednesdays” at the Bet drama’s second season premiere.

“It’s a beautiful time, you know,” Waithe told Variety at the event’s green carpet, speaking to press for the third time in just over a week, after the events celebrating her role on HBO’s “Westworld” and her new Bet series “Twenties,” which debuted on the network March 4 with nearly two million viewers tuning in.

Speaking of “Twenties’” impressive bow, Waithe said, “To me, what the 2 million viewers meant was that society really showed us that they’re ready. They’re ready to step into this new chapter where intersectionality is not, you know, abnormal, but it is the norm. And I really felt that love and that support.”

Exclusive: Bet’s Boomerang is coming back for season 2 on March 11 and it’s bringing a talented roster of women of color to direct all eight episodes. The network also released a new trailer that gives an extended look at the comedy which puts Bryson (Tequan Richmond), Simone (Tetona Jackson) and the entire Boomerang gang in a whole new — and hyperrealistic — series of life lessons.

Lena Waithe’s Hillman Grad Productions have set Angeli Millan and Dime Davis as co-showrunners. Davis, who also worked on the show’s freshman season, directed four of the eight episodes while Tiffany Johnson and Katrelle N. Kindred will direct two episodes each. Kindred was brought on by Davis and is also a member of ViacomCBS’s ViewFinder Emerging TV Directors Program. Boomerang marks her TV directorial debut.
