Breaking the system and challenging the status quo since 1987. Juan Diego Escobar Alzate is a disillusioned cowboy hailing from Manizales, Colombia and an irreverent filmmaker with a keen focus on genre cinema encompassing westerns and dark and eerie atmospheric fantasy films. He helmed the internationally acclaimed colombian film "Luz: The Flower of Evil" (LUZ) in 2019, a standout entry in the Sitges Film Festival's official competition. This cult film boasted an impressive tally of 65 official selections and 24 prestigious awards. Yet, Juan Diego remains unmoved by the allure of numbers, job opportunities, or even conventional success; he wields a unique pair of scissors. He openly plans to direct only one last feature film before retiring from the directors chair.
With his distinctive style, a voice that stands apart, and a penchant for pushing boundaries within genre cinema, Escobar extends an invitation to embark on reflective, experiential, and emotionally charged journeys. His alternative narratives provoke questions and seek to heal, transcending the pursuit of blockbuster box office figures and mass appeal. Beyond the silver screen, Juan Diego has lent his directorial talents to music videos for artists like Manuel Medrano, Matt Simons, Charleon, The Scum and others.
He was the head of acquisitions for the French streaming platform dedicated to genre and fantastic cinema, Freaks On® from 2020 to 2024.
Currently his projects are away from cinema.
