British filmmaker Luna Carmoon first set plans to make her feature debut with Film Four after producing a series of buzzy short projects. That feature, however, was put on indefinite hold after execs at the broadcaster, as Carmoon describes it, “ghosted” her.
“Thankfully I didn’t sign any contracts with them. But I was going to be in development with them,” she explains from a photography studio in London where she is currently working. “And then they disappeared for a year and I never heard from them again.”
In response, Carmoon began writing a new project out of “desperation and sanctity.” The result was Hoard, which debuted at last year’s Venice Film Festival. The film picked up three prizes in Venice before embarking on an extended festival run, which included Lff where Carmoon won the Sutherland Award for Best First Feature. Previous winners of the Sutherland include Andrea Arnold,...

Watch Saoirse Ronan And Nicholas Britell Perform Live Version Of ‘Blitz’ Original Song ‘Winter Coat’
Exclusive: Saoirse Ronan, a four-time Oscar nominee, has been earning an entirely new set of props for her performance in Blitz, the latest feature from British filmmaker Steve McQueen.
In the WWII pic, Ronan plays Rita, a young mother searching for her son who has gone missing during Germany’s aerial bombardment of London. Rita also is a keen musician and can more than carry a tune. In one scene, she is chosen to sing for a live BBC wartime radio broadcast and performs the gentle but defiant song “Winter Coat.” Ronan has now recorded a new live version of the song, which you can watch above.
The song was written by McQueen, musician Taura Stinson and three-time Oscar-nominated composer Nicholas Britell. The performance above was recorded November 7 in Studio A at the legendary Power Station at BerkleeNYC in New York City. Ben Wheatley, the British indie filmmaker, somewhat rests on the periphery of the British film industry. Neither a social realist nor a James Bond action filmmaker, Wheatley seems more a forerunner of films like that from Robert Eggers. Wheatley, alongside his wife and screenwriter Amy Jump, has made a selection of diverse films, consistently inverting and manipulating genre tropes and playing with audience expectations. In some way or another, all of Wheatley’s work focus on varying oddball and sociopathic central characters who find honesty and loyalty hard to come by. While mixing scares, gore, and trippy action, Ben Wheatley deftly imbues each film with a dark comedy, underlying each situation with a satire and wit that has become a staple throughout his work.
Wheatley started his career as an internet phenomenon whereby his film, Cunning Stunt, was one of the first videos to ever go viral. After a hundred...

Whilst the eyes of the world may be locked firmly on the other side of the Atlantic this morning, back here in Blighty there is at least some positivity still to be shared yet. Having shone last year when the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes brought Hollywood to a standstill, the independent British cinema scene has continued to shine throughout 2024, with revered greats, rising stars, returning masters, and bold new narratives all emerging to ensure the flame for indies from these shores has never burned brighter. As such, it comes as no great surprise that the announcement of this year's British Independent Film Awards nominees is a veritable treasure trove of great art and great artists that stand to represent the very best British filmmaking has to offer.

Writer-director Steve McQueen has become adept at making movies of lost characters trying to find their way back to their families. He did it with 12 Years a Slave and hes doing it with his latest feature, Blitz. The historical drama is set in 1940, during Nazi Germanys blitz against Britain. At times harrowing and traumatic, McQueen never shows the moment the bombings happen. Still, there are close-ups of the weapons the Germans dropped on Londons civilian population that foreshadow exactly what will come next. Blitz is a capably made movie that, with a few exceptions, rings hollow.

With his new World War II drama Blitz, uncompromising filmmaker Steve McQueen is once more tackling weighty, vital material. He tells us about his ongoing mission to break new ground…
Here’s what you need to know about Steve McQueen, as a man and as a filmmaker: he will not waste your time. Not with false modesty, nor with empty boasting. Not by suffering fools or flattering royalty. This is sometimes mistaken for brusqueness. It isn’t. It’s a guarantee that when a single shot of a priest conversing with a prisoner lasts 17 minutes and 11 seconds (as in 2008 feature debut Hunger), or when his 2023 Holocaust documentary Occupied City takes four hours and 26 minutes (not including interval), every moment is necessary and accounted for.
It’s this disciplined focus on what McQueen emphatically calls “the work... The W-O-R-K” which has enabled the 54-year-old to frequently...

After exploring the ramifications of the Nazi occupation of Amsterdam in his 4 1/2-hour 2023 documentary Occupied City, director-writer Steve McQueen returns to the era for his latest narrative feature Blitz, which takes us to the German Blitzkrieg of London as seen through the innocent eyes of a young boy who must survive it. The movie was the opening-night attraction of the London Film Festival, and will also be making its North American premiere later this month at the New York Film Festival. It begins a three-week theatrical window November 1 ahead of its streaming debut on Apple TV+ November 22.
Movies have centered on this dark period in British history before, and notably a Best Picture Oscar-nominated film, Hope And Glory in 1987, detailed it in a lighter fashion (if there could be one) with director John Boorman’s own semi-autobiographical coming-of-age story as a 9-year-old experiencing the Blitz.

Steve McQueen’s World War II epic Blitz lands in November, and here’s the first trailer for the film right here.
Just yesterday we reported that Steve McQueen could be heading to the small screen, collaborating with Amazon Studios on a TV series with something of a dystopian bent. While we wouldn’t be opposed to seeing McQueen tackle long-form storytelling, we’re first looking forward to what is surely his most commercial feature film, the epic World War II drama, Blitz.
As the title suggests, the action will be set amid the horrendous bombings that rained down on London (and other British cities) throughout World War II.
The synopsis for the film reads as such:

Across his career, British director Steve McQueen has always proved ambitious – whether directing all five instalments of Small Axe, flirting with blockbuster territory in Widows, or unflinchingly conjuring American history in 12 Years A Slave. And his latest is not only another film set in the past, but it once again finds him working on a big canvas – get ready for Blitz, set in World War II amid the (you guessed it) London Blitz, as the capital city is devastated by enemy bombers. Caught in the middle of it all is 9-year-old George (Elliott Heffernan), sent away by his mother Rita – played by Saoirse Ronan – to safety, but inadvertently caught up in the middle of the conflict as the city blazes around him. Watch the trailer here:
While there have been plenty of World War II films in recent years, few have gone into the heart of the Blitz – and McQueen’s film,...

Saoirse Ronan plays a distraught mother searching for her missing son in World War II East London in the trailer for Steve McQueen’s Blitz, which dropped on Thursday.
The drama follows George, a 9-year-old boy, played by Elliot Heffernan, in wartime London after his mother Rita (Ronan) sends him as an evacuee to safety in the English countryside. But defiant and determined to get back home on his own to his mother and grandfather Gerald (Paul Weller) in East London, George encounters real danger as a distraught Rita tries to find her footloose son as he faces mounting peril.
“Why can’t you tell me, where’s my boy?” Rita pleads with London police officers at one point in the trailer. Meanwhile, George is seen scurrying for shelter alongside other Londoners in underground subway stations or bombed-out buildings as German Luftwaffe planes continue to bomb the British capital’s east end.

Stranger Things star Joseph Quinn is having a huge moment between his breakout in the Netflix role, his recent starring turn in A Quiet Place: Day One, and his upcoming appearance as Johnny Storm/The Human Torch in the MCU’s Fantastic Four film. It’s no wonder that Hoard, an indie movie in which he has a supporting role, is getting a much larger platform than it otherwise would, considering his popularity. As for the movie itself, it’s a conventional story told from an unconventional perspective, resulting in an incredibly uneven entry into the genre.
Hoard Review
Hoard follows a young woman through two time periods — her youth, when her mom was a hoarder, and her teenage years in foster care, where she is forced to unbury traumas that have long been repressed. Carmoon’s coming-of-age story clearly tries to use this very specific experience to channel more universal emotions.

Oscar-winning filmmaker Steve McQueen is headed back to the New York Film Festival.
On Thursday, Film at Lincoln Center revealed that McQueen’s “Blitz” starring Saoirse Ronan and newcomer Elliott Heffernan will close the 62nd edition of the New York Film Festival. The event is being billed as the Apple Original Film’s North American premiere, following the “Blitz” world premiere at the BFI London Film Festival in early October. (The NYFF premiere designation all but officially rules out a potential screening at the Telluride Film Festival.)
“Blitz” is the eighth McQueen film to screen at the New York Film Festival in its history, following “Hunger,” “Shame,” Best Picture winner “12 Years a Slave,” the Amazon title “Lovers Rock” (part of McQueen’s “Small Axe” anthology), and last year’s documentary “Occupied City.” “Blitz” will land in New York on October 10.

This will follow the film’s World Premiere at BFI London Film Festival the day prior and continues a long-standing relationship between McQueen and NYFF as all of his features have played at the festival, except for Widows and two of his Small Axe films.
Here’s the NYFF synopsis: “Blitz, an authentic and astonishing recreation of London during its blitzkrieg by the Germans during World War II, pushes the artistry of Steve McQueen to ever more impressive levels. Working on a vast scale, McQueen sets things at human eye level,...

Steve McQueen’s World War II drama starring Saoirse Ronan, “Blitz,” will close the 62nd New York Film Festival, Film at Lincoln Center announced on Thursday. The movie will screen on October 10 at Alice Tully Hall in Manhattan, which will mark its North American premiere.
“Blitz,” which McQueen wrote, directed and produced, stars Ronan as a working-class single mother living in London during Nazi Germany’s 1941 blitzkrieg that began on September 7 and continued for 57 consecutive days and nights, killing almost 1,500 people.
The film is told from the points of view of Ronan’s Rita and her 9-year-old son George (played by newcomer Elliott Heffernan), who become separated during the air raids. According to the description offered by the festival, the film “offers a multicultural portrait of 1940s London too infrequently seen on screens” and is “Dickensian in its scope and storytelling.”
