Tonight, The Podcast Academy (Tpa), the preeminent professional podcast organization, announced winners at its fourth annual Awards for Excellence in Audio (The Ambies®) from the Jw Marriott LA Live Los Angeles hosted by season 3 winner of “RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars,” Trixie Mattel. Additionally, Malcolm Gladwell was honored with the esteemed Governors Award, which recognizes a podcast or individual for the compelling influence they’ve had on the industry; and pop-culture podcaster Ira Madison III received the Impact Award, which recognizes an individual or podcast that has made a significant, positive effect on its listeners.

The Ambies celebrate excellence in podcasting and elevate awareness and status of podcasts as a unique and personal medium for entertainment, information, storytelling and expression. The ceremony highlighted 192 nominees across 27 categories with winners selected by every voting member of The Podcast Academy (Tpa).

“Slow Burn: Becoming Justice Thomas” took the honor for Podcast of the Year on Tuesday night at the fourth annual The Ambies awards recognizing excellence in audio.

The awards were handed out in 27 categories at a ceremony held Tuesday night at downtown Los Angeles’ J.W. Marriott LA Live Los Angeles and live streamed on The Podcast Academy’s YouTube channel. The ceremony was hosted by Trixie Mattel, Season 3 winner of “RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars” Trixie Mattel.

“This is amazing,” said Joel Anderson, host of Slate’s most recent season of its “Slow Burn” podcast. “Becoming Clarence Thomas” follows the Supreme Court justice’s life story and his journey from youthful radical to conservative icon.

“Weight For It,” hosted by Ronald Young Jr., earned the most wins, with three Ambies including Best Indie Podcast, Best Indie Podcast Host/Hosts and Best Society and Culture Podcast.

After 21 years, Rooster Teeth is shutting down.

“Since inheriting ownership and control of Rooster Teeth from AT&T following its acquisition of TimeWarner, Warner Bros. Discovery continued its investment in our company, content and community,” Rooster Teeth General Manager Jordan Levin said in a company memo. “Now however, it’s with a heavy heart I announce that Rooster Teeth is shutting down due to challenges facing digital media resulting from fundamental shifts in consumer behavior and monetization across platforms, advertising, and patronage.”

Around 150 staff are being affected, plus dozens of contractors and freelancers. A post from Rooster Teeth Community Manager Chelsea Atkinson asked that fans remember everyone at Rooster Teeth is “processing this in real time just like you,” and announced there will be a livestream about the closure March 7 on the Rooster Teeth website.

A pioneer in digital content creation is going away. Rooster Teeth, a subsidiary of Warner Bros. Discovery Global Streaming & Interactive Entertainment, announced this morning that it is ceasing operations after 21 years. The process starts today and is expected to take several months.

The news was announced at an all-hands company meeting and shared in an internal memo by Rooster Teeth general manager Jordan Levin.

Let me start by saying I am not now, nor have I ever been a fan of Rwby, an American anime series that has been chugging along since its debut in 2013. The Justice League and Rwby are teaming up, with the DC heroes and and Rooster Teeth characters joining forces for an animated movie.

Justice League x Rwby: Super Heroes & Huntsmen, Part One arrives on digital, 4K and Blu-ray in the spring. Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Flash, Cyborg, Green Lantern and Vixen are transported to the strange world of Remnant and find themselves turned into teenagers. Meanwhile, Remnant heroes Ruby, Weiss, Blake and Yang must combine forces with the Justice League to uncover why their planet has been mysteriously altered before a superpowered Grimm destroys everything.

Back in May, Pepsi announced it would be ending its longstanding partnership with the league and its halftime show.

At midnight on Friday (23 September), the NFL’s official Twitter account formally revealed Apple Music as its new sponsor by retweeting Apple Music’s post, captioned, “See you in February”.

Broadway has just reopened after shuttering on March 13, 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic. To mark the return of the rialto, the 74th annual Tonys were handed out on Sunday, September 26 at the Winter Garden theater. This two-part ceremony, which will be hosted by six-time Tony winner Audra McDonald on Paramount+ and “Hamilton” star Leslie Odom, Jr. on CBS, comes almost one year after nominations were announced on October 15, 2020.

Two new musicals – “Jagged Little Pill” and “Moulin Rouge!” — lead the Tony Awards nominations with 15 and 14 bids respectively including Best Musical. A third tuner, “Tina – The Tina Turner Musical,” reaped a dozen bids as did the new drama “Slave Play.” While the nominees were decided by 48 theater professionals, the winners were voted on by 831 members of the Broadway community.

The curtain’s inching up on the Tony Awards: A ceremony will be held on an as-yet-undetermined date in coordination with Broadway’s eventual reopening, but voters will finally be able to make their selections beginning March 1, Tony organizers tell Deadline.

Nominees for the 74th Annual Tony Awards were announced last October, with the 18 eligible productions reflecting the pandemic-shortened 2019-20 season (the count usually numbers in the 30s). The 2020 Tony ceremony and CBS broadcast had originally been set for June 7 at New York’s Radio City Musical Hall, but of course was scuttled due to the Covid shutdown.

The voting period will run from March 1 to March 15. Although Broadway remains officially closed until June, most insiders don’t expect any stagings before fall at the earliest, with timing contingent on widespread Covid-19 vaccinations.

Harris’ buzzy drama “Slave Play.” The artist earned two Tony nominations for his work, in the Best Score and Sound Design of a Play categories. The Best Score category at the Tony Awards is unique this year in that the race is filled out by music from plays. Jones says that the discipline of scoring a drama “requires a tremendous amount of sensitivity” to match the emotions depicted on stage. He adds that his music has “two main functions.” First, transition music that keeps the energy flowing from one scene to the next.

In an unprecedented year for the Broadway community, the Tony Awards just gifted theatre fans with a reason to celebrate: Jeremy O. Harris’ audacious and brilliant “Slave Play” now holds the record for the most play nominations in a single season with a whopping dozen.

The Tony Awards nominations were announced on Thursday, October 15 by Tony winner James Monroe Iglehart (“Aladdin”). The reveal of the roster of contenders was carried on the Tonys YouTube channel. While the nominations for the 74th annual Tony Awards were determined by 41 theater professionals, winners will be decided by 784 members of the Broadway community.

Only 18 shows were eligible for consideration by the nominating committee. On the play side, there are 10 original works and four revivals in the running. Over on the musical side, four new tuners are in contention; no musical revivals qualified. The cutoff date for eligibility was February 19, 2020. Rooster Teeth is uncoincidentally debuting its latest comedy competition series on 4/20. Titled Last Laugh, the venture -- part social experiment, part game show -- will see 12 contestants trapped in a room for six hours; whoever laughs, smiles, or smirks three times is eliminated until only one creator is left standing.

The unscripted series -- which will offer a $1,000 cash prize for one winner -- comes courtesy of Funhaus, a Rooster Teeth-owned gaming and comedy channel. The series was created by longtime Funhaus member and gaming personality Elyse Willems, with Rooster Teeth co-founder Geoff Ramsey serving as host, and Rooster Teeth’s Stephanie Ard directing.

The contestants are: James Willems, Adam Kovic, Willems, Jon Smith, Lindsay Jones, Michael Jones, Alfredo Diaz, Fiona Nova, Gus Sorola, Chris Demarais, Blaine Gibson, and Jessica Vasami. Each contestant has three lives, with one life lost for every smile, snicker, or full-on giggle.

Jeremy O. Harris’ Slave Play landed on various critics’ best-of lists after its Off Broadway production last December, and now the incendiary and brutally funny comedy-drama about race, sexual fetishes and the undying legacy of American slavery, is headed to Broadway.

With Jake Gyllenhaal’s Nine Stories production company as one of the producers, Slave Play, directed by Robert O’Hara, will begin previews of a 17-week engagement on Tuesday, Sept. 10 at the Golden Theatre, with an opening night set for Sunday, Oct. 6.

Casting was not announced.

The Broadway production was announced by producers Greg Nobile and Jana Shea of Seaview Productions; Troy Carter; Level Forward; and Nine Stories, founded by Gyllenhaal and Riva Marker to develop and produce new works for theater, film and television. Nine Stories is a producer of Broadway’s upcoming Sea Wall/A Life starring Gyllenhaal and Tom Sturridge; performances begin July 26 at the Hudson Theatre.

Rooster Teeth has tapped Maisie Williams, the 21-year-old English actress who rose to fame on HBO’s historic Game Of Thrones series, to appear in its forthcoming gen:lock.

The series, which marks Rooster Teeth’s second-ever anime-style outing, is about a diverse team of pilot recruits who have been tapped to control giant, weaponized robot bodies known as ‘mecha’ in order to fight for earth’s last free society in a global war. “Rwby” volume 6, the latest installment of Rooster Teeth’s popular anime-style series, will premiere Oct. 27, the company announced.

The new season (which Rooster Teeth dubs “volumes”) will initially be available on the company’s subscription-streaming service, which starts at $4.99 monthly, with new episodes to be released on a weekly basis.

“Rwby” is set in the magical world of Remnant, in which four girls — Ruby, Weiss, Blake, and Yang — fight legions of evil monsters. In volume 6, “Rwby’s” female foursome have been reunited and their first mission back is one of grave importance: escorting the Relic of Knowledge to Atlas. With Beacon Academy destroyed and the kingdom of Mistral compromised, per Rooster Teeth, “Remnant’s northernmost academy may now be the safest place in the world, but making it there will be more dangerous than anyone could have imagined.”

Rooster Teeth has plenty of content coming out in the next few months to excite its fans. At San Diego Comic-Con on July 11, 2015, Rooster Teeth unveiled the official X-Ray and Vav season two trailer and discussed the production company’s upcoming sci-fi comedy feature film Lazer Team.

In the official trailer for season two of X-Ray and Vav, viewers are re-introduced to the titular characters voiced by Ray Narvaez, Jr. and Gavin Free. The animated series, which originally launched in November 2014, is also bringing on board new characters voiced by Adventure Time’s Jessica Dicicco and Parks & Recreation’s Colton Dunn (who’s also starring in Rooster Teeth’s Lazer Team film).
