"Batman: The Animated Series" was produced to capitalize on the success of the Tim Burton "Batman" films. Both the films and cartoon played big roles in bringing a darker Batman to the wider public, the kind that may not have bothered picking up a copy of Frank Miller's comic masterpiece "The Dark Knight Returns."
"Batman: The Animated Series" is widely considered to be the superlative take on the Dark Knight and his rogues gallery. It helps that the series starred several villains never before adapted out of the comics. The pilot episode, "On Leather Wings," featured Batman fighting the monstrous Man-Bat. The 1960s "Batman" series tried and failed to include Harvey "Two-Face" Dent, but "The Animated Series" had him, gruesome origin and all. While DC fans have Superman on their mind with his new film hitting theaters this Summer, arguably the most popular character in that popular comic universe remains to be Batman. The protector of Gotham City has appeared in countless movies, TV shows and comics in his 85-year history. He also changed the merchandising game when Tim Burton's Batman was released in 1989. Over 35 years later, the character is still a major part of DC’s marketing push with McFarlane Toys delivering the heroic goods when it comes to high-quality action figures. Now their latest Batman figure has the Justice League member ready for an epic battle.
A part of McFarlane's DC Multiverse line of figures, this seven-inch scale piece is Batman’s Final Batsuit from Justice League: The Sixth Dimension. The famous toy company has made a ton of Batman figures in the last half decade, but known quite like this.

DC fans are counting down the days till Batman returns to the big screen. As of now, The Batman: Part II in 2027 is the earliest that can happen. That film recently got delayed to the heartbreak of many, but James Gunn's Dcu is about to make a major splash with Superman this summer. This shared universe will have its own version of The Caped Crusader. McFarlane Toys has been trying to fill the Batman-void until the character returns to theaters with their wide variety of DC figures. Now, their latest Batman pieces are ready to take to the streets of Gotham.
The first of these new Batman figures is a part of McFarlane's DC Multiverse line. This GameStop-exclusive seven-inch Red Platinum Edition figure is based on “The Cowardly Lot” comic storyline from writer James Tyion IV and artist Jorge Jiménez that was found in the pages of Batman. The...

Superman will soon be returning to the big screen this summer in James Gunn's highly-anticipated film. The epic adventure is set to kick off the new Dcu and, as we get closer to the film's release, the merchandise is bound to be unveiled any day now. This is sure to include apparel, Funko Pops, and action figures. The latter of which has seen McFarlane Toys being the heavy hitter for the last number of years. Now, before David Corenswet's version of the hero leaps a tall building in a single bound, McFarlane has unveiled their latest Superman figure alongside some of DC's toughest villains.
A part of McFarlane's Todd’s MODs line, these vinyl 4.5-inch scale figures include Superman, King Shark, and Killer Croc. King Shark is best known for his revolving door role on the supervillain-centric Suicide Squad black ops team, while Killer Croc has been terrorizing...

The Batman: Arkham franchise is still considered one of the best series in the entire gaming industry. The games accurately depict the famous superhero, Batman, and make the players truly feel like the Dark Knight himself. All the Arkham games have been a treat to play, but Warner Bros. truly fumbled on this one game from 2022. Of course, we are talking about Gotham Knights.
Gotham Knights featured a cool story, yet it had bad gameplay elements | Image Credits: Warner Bros.
Gotham Knights is sincerely underwhelming, and Warner Bros. really fumbled the bag on this one. Instead of delivering an Arkham Knight sequel, they released the most disappointing extension in the whole franchise. Let’s delve deeper into what could’ve been the best Arkham installment in the whole series.

According to DC Studios co-heads James Gunn and Peter Safran, the age of Gods and Monsters will soon be upon us. Like Marvel Studios’s “phases,” Gods and Monsters provides a roadmap for DC’s film and television initiative. Gunn and Safran shared an outline of their plan in January 2023, though, as we know, everything in Hollywood is subject to change, especially when the project is as vast as Gods and Monsters. According to the duo, they plan to release two live-action films and one animated film annually. In contrast, Max, the HBO-adjacent streaming service, wants two live-action and two animated series annually. However, 2025 is an exception, with Peacemaker Season 2 being the only live-action release this year.
“We’ve unified the brand, greenlit five theatrical films, made three live action-series and producing five animated series. We’ve also acquired and distributed a BAFTA and PGA winning documentary,” Safran said at a press conference on Friday.

Two years after becoming the co-heads of DC Studios, James Gunn and Peter Safran brought us up to speed on their vision of an interconnected DC across TV and film, a phase that they entitled “Gods and Monsters.”
Mostly everything they announced back in January 2023 is intact in some form or fashion, and we’ve provided an update on projects below. The duo’s plan moving forward is to release two live-action and one animated DC film per year. They’re also targeting two-live action and two animated series for Max per year. However for 2025, there’s only one series, that being Season 2 of Gunn’s Peacemaker premiering in August.

Andy Muschietti, the director of The Flash, is opening up about why he thinks the DC film flopped at the box office.
In a new interview, the filmmaker says that many factors contributed to the underperforming superhero film and not bringing moviegoers to theaters.
“I think [The Flash] failed because it didn’t appeal to all four quadrants,” Muschietti said on La Baulera del Coso. “When you make a 200 million dollar film, the studio expects you even to bring your grandmother to the theaters.”
Muschietti said that “in private conversations,” he was told that “many people are not interested in The Flash as a character. Half of the quadrants, two are female [and] many women are not interested in The Flash as a character.”
According to Comscore PostTrak exit polling, the audience for The Flash’s Thursday night showing pulled in 47% guys over 25 (78% grade), 29% guys under 25 (73% grade), 17% women over 25 (76%) and 7% women...

If you haven’t heard, Jason Momoa has been officially cast as Lobo in the Dcu and will reportedly make his debut in Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, which I wrote about here. It’s exciting news as fans have said Momoa is the perfect choice with some even comparing the appropriateness of the casting to Robert Downey Junior’s Iron Man. Gunn has said he was open to casting old Dceu actors in roles for the Dcu and has made good on his word. Now that the door is open, let’s take other actors from the Dceu and cast them in the fresh Dcu.

"The Batman" director Matt Reeves has chosen to keep his version of Gotham City, in which Robert Pattinson is Bruce Wayne, separate from the larger DC Universe -- which means that the Dcu's Wayne Manor is still in need of an occupant. Director Andy Muschietti's upcoming live-action movie "The Brave and the Bold" will see the Dark Knight in a way we've never seen him on the big screen before: as a father. Confirmed during Gunn's first announcement of the DC slate, the Batman in that world will be taking his estranged son, Damien Wayne, under his cape and fighting the criminals of Gotham as a heroic father-and-son team.
It's still early days for "The Brave and the Bold," which doesn't yet have a release date and has yet to cast its Batman. Plenty of actors have been considered for the role, or proposed by fans, over the years...

Recently, rumors have been circulating saying James Gunn wants Robert Pattinson’s Batman to join the Dcu. Many rumors about the Dcu have turned out to be true recently, and this is one I really don’t care for. While some think Pattinson’s Batman could exist alongside David Corenswet’s Superman, I think establishing a new Batman is the way to go. Here’s why:

I could never get enough of Batman: The Animated Series and some incredible art makes me realize that I really want a Nightwing spin-off of the best DC animated series of all time. Batman: The Animated Series has endured for over three decades, becoming one of the best adaptations of the character and greatly influencing the comics and other media that came after it. Since first premiering in 1992, it still has yet to be topped.

Beware the rumor mill says James Gunn, as there are countless false reports about upcoming DC Universe projects floating around online, and Gunn is calling "bullsh*t" on the worst ones. Gunn and Peter Safran, co-Presidents of DC Studios, have been making headway the last few weeks, announcing various new projects and updating fans about the status of the Dcu's Phase 1 titled "Gods & Monsters." For every official announcement, there are twice as many rumors being created by over-excited fans and industry "insiders." But Gunn is here to clarify things, and took to threads to dispel rumors about two of the most exciting DC projects.
While Superman has wrapped shooting, the Dcu's Batman movie (The Brave and the Bold) still remains very secretive. A rumor was recently spread online that DC Studios are looking to cast an older version of Batman. However, taking to Threads, James Gunn literally called "bullsh*t" on the rumor.

When James Gunn was first announced to be the co-head of Dcu alongside Peter Safran, the fans were certain that the Peacemaker creator would be a messiah for the universe. However, the reception to a recent Dcu report suggests that some fans are now concerned about Gunn’s plans. To be precise, Kumail Nanjiani’s rumored casting as Booster Gold has raised huge online chatter.

Kumail Nanjiani is not a stranger to the superhero genre with previous appearances in the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Eternals and Amazon Prime’s The Boys. It can be observed from the recent surge of tweets that despite his popularity, nobody can really envision him as Booster Gold.

Batman: The Long Halloween had been adapted into two films that, albeit handled poorly by Warner Brothers, were still relatively well received by fans. DC’s My Adventures With Superman is returning for a second season and the makers seemed to have pulled all the stops to make it a bigger and better follow-up to the hit show. The animated series stars Jack Quaid as Superman and Alice Lee voicing Lois Lane. The show also sees Jimmy Olsen as a significant part of the trio.
While the show has references to multiple other DC characters and artifacts, it has yet to feature one of the IP’s most popular characters Batman. Whenever it comes to the Dcau, fans often look back to Bruce Timm’s masterful work on Batman: The Animated Series, which by many is still considered the peak of the caped crusader. However, the Dcau isn’t just limited to Btas, as there have been several different interpretations of the iconic character in the realm of animation, with one of them being The Batman.
Not to be confused with Matt Reeves’ The Batman, The Batman Animated Series was a fun reimagining of Batman and its coterie of supervillains, which scored well critically throughout its run. One thing that fans found odd about the show was the introduction of Batgirl as Bruce’s first sidekick, but the writers can’t be blamed for this decision.

John Oliver has some ideas for DC co-heads James Gunn and Peter Safran as to who should be their next Batman.
On the latest episode of Last Week Tonight, Oliver discussed the Supreme Court agreeing to take on Donald Trump’s immunity case and whether ex-presidents can be prosecuted. The HBO late-night show host said that the answer was an obvious, “Yes!”
Oliver went on to cite other obvious answers like, “Did Robert Durst kill those people? Or Which cereal mascot f***s the most? Or who should play the next Batman? And for the record, the answers are, absolutely, it’s not even close [Tony the tiger], and Natasha Lyonne.”
The comedian joked the Russian Doll star would make a great casting choice whenever they cast the next Batman.

The Dcu’s Batman Movie Was Already Made 10 Years Ago (& Proves It's Perfect For James Gunn's Reboot)
Batman: The Brave and the Bold's similar plot to a previous Batman movie makes it perfect for James Gunn's Dcu reboot. The movie will introduce Batman mentoring his son, Robin, in a compelling exploration of legacy and identity. Son of Batman's success proves that the inclusion of the wider Bat Family in future movies will be exciting and achievable.

Zack Snyder has a talent for making pitch-perfect casting decisions in his films, such as Gerard Butler in 300 and Jeffrey Dean Morgan in Watchmen. Snyder's second choice to play Batman in Batman v. Superman was Matthias Schoenaerts, who could have portrayed a younger Caped Crusader. James Gunn's casting method for the Dcu should be different from Snyder's, focusing on recognizable traits of the comic book characters to create a long-lasting cinematic universe.
There are few working directors as polarizing as Zack Snyder. His dark and violent vision for the DC Extended Universe has inspired all manner of debate about its merits, much like his R-rated 300 and Watchmen comic book adaptations. Viewers are equally divided on his 2011 flop Sucker Punch; depending on who you ask, it's either a misunderstood indictment (as Snyder has insisted) or the very embodiment of sexism in pop culture. Yet, as divisive as his films are,...

James Gunn’s development of the new Superman reboot and Dcu kickstart, Superman: Legacy, wasn’t affected by the strikes as the writer and director of the Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy was able to submit his screenplay just before the writers started their picketing. While the dual strikes were in effect, he was able to continue with the project purely with his director’s cap on. Pre-production is currently continuing in full force, and more and more news of casting is released, including a new Jimmy Olsen and Eve Teschmacher being cast with Skylar Gisondo and Sara Sampaio.
While Gunn concluded his initial script prior to the strikes, there were inevitable rewrites and additional drafts to be written after completion, as is done with nearly all screenplays. Now that the strikes have subsided, Gunn has been able to go back and work on his script. Recently, the frequently interactive...

Batman: The Brave and the Bold will feature the Bat Family, showcasing Batman's allies and providing contrast to his reclusive persona. Aidan Gallagher, known for his role in The Umbrella Academy, would be a good fit to portray Damian Wayne, showcasing his confidence and sharp attitude. Jensen Ackles, who has experience voicing Batman in animated movies, and has the ability to display the calm intensity and charisma of Bruce Wayne, is a popular fan cast for the role.
Little is yet known about DC's Batman: The Brave and the Bold, but teases that the movie will feature at least some of the Bat Family have sparked discussions over who should play the protectors of Gotham. While Batman has often been seen on the big screen with one Robin, comic readers know that Batman's allies are far more expansive than one sidekick. Many comic book characters are known for their shape-shifting abilities, but few have the same creativity as Beast Boy of the Teen Titans. Throughout the character's history, Beast Boy has utilized his animal transformations in jaw-dropping fashion, regularly showcasing his power. Introduced in Doom Patrol #99 by Arnold Drake and Bob Brown, over the years different creators have taken the character and his skill set to incredible heights – sometimes literally.
Beast Boy has been shown to effortlessly change his body composition in seconds, morphing into creatures as large as a blue whale or as formless as a jellyfish. He has even become swarms of fireflies, barnacles, and bacteria. Over time, Beast Boy has become one of the most powerful characters in fiction. The inclusion of Damian Wayne as Robin in The Brave and the Bold poses a major risk to the film and the Dcu's iteration of Batman, as casting and writing for young actors can be challenging. Director Andy Muschietti's previous experience with an ensemble cast of teens in It Chapter One proves that he can handle young actors excellently, making him an excellent match for directing Damian Wayne in The Brave and the Bold. Muschietti's work on The Flash, which featured two iterations of Batman and showcased epic action scenes, suggests that he is well-equipped to accurately depict Batman and Robin on film in The Brave and the Bold.

Since the first animated Batman movie, Mask of the Phantasm (1993), Warner Bros. Animation has made a habit of adapting iconic Batman comics into the format. Most of these animated Batman movies are straight-to-video, but the best have left fans champing at the bit and wishing they could see these movies on the big screen
Unsurprisingly, the quality of this plethora of Batman animated features varies. Still, their overall batting average is impressive. As Warner Bros. still struggles with building a reliable live-action Dceu, they could do much worse than looking to these animated stories for guidance. Not every Batman animated movie is a winner but even his weakest adaptations could teach DC some valuable lessons.

Pedro Pascal is the man of the moment and Jensen Ackles knows it very well, which is why he fears losing the chance to play Batman to the protagonist of The Last of Us and The Mandalorian.
The former Supernatural star is one of the fan-favorite choices to become the new Dark Knight. In fact, before Ben Affleck was cast as the Snyderverse's Bruce Wayne, or Robert Pattinson was announced as Matt Reeves' Batman, many called for Ackles to don the Caped Crusader suit.
In fact, the star of The Boys has already had the opportunity to become the vigilante of Gotham City but in animated productions such as The Long Halloween, Legion of Super-Heroes, or more recently in Justice League: Warworld. James Gunn’s plans for the new Dcu are setting up some exciting team-ups, although they haven’t announced them yet. The plans are full of exciting nuggets from the return of Superman to the big screen in Superman: Legacy to the continuation of recent Egot-winner Viola Davis’s tenure as Amanda Waller in Waller on HBO Max. There were surprises like The Authority and projects that audiences have been clamoring for, such as Booster Gold. In short, the new Dcu is making a triumphant return after years of dysfunction and conflicting creative impressions. With The Flash resetting the timeline, Gunn can begin anew and give the Dcu the bright future it deserves.
Importantly, the 10 new projects only account for the first part of Chapter 1: “Gods and Monsters”. Much more is yet to come in the Chapter, including the super special secret project Gunn’s repeatedly teased, but it...

The inspiration for the upcoming Dcu films, Superman: Legacy and The Brave and the Bold, make them even more exciting ventures. James Gunn and Peter Safran have finally laid out their plans to relaunch the franchise, scathingly citing the major problems that continuously corroded the Dcu from the inside. Importantly, they defined how their ambitious 2023 slate will be incorporated with The Flash effectively catalyzing the full reboot. There’s certainly a lot to look forward to in “Chapter 1: Gods & Monsters” from the rise of underrated, obscure characters like Booster Gold and the Authority to key roles to a return to form for DC’s legends, Superman and Batman.
These plans showcase the alternative approach they're taking compared to the previous regime, though the never-ending calls for the Snyderverse's return will likely persist. Aptly, the new Dcu is making bold choices when it comes to style, genre, tone, and format to establish broad,...

After teasing that he and fellow DC Studios CEO Peter Safran today began talking up some of the movies and shows we can expect. And that includes new versions of Batman, Superman, Supergirl, Green Lantern and more. Watch the announcement here, and read the full breakdown below.
Gunn started by confirming that the existing DC movies still to be released — Shazam! Fury Of The Gods, The Flash, Blue Beetle and Aquaman And The Lost Kingdom – will all still make it to cinemas, with The Flash and its universe-rebooting nature proving key to helping to usher in the new paradigm. They will lead into what Gunn and Safran are calling 'Gods And Monsters', effectively the first chunk of the first part of the plan. It'll be a mix of TV (both animated and live-action) and movies, with games tying in as needed.
So what can we expect? Gunn talked up 10 initial titles.

Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight trilogy is widely regarded as the best film adaptation of Batman, and even though The Dark Knight Rises brought Bruce Wayne’s (Christian Bale) story to an end, if a fourth movie happened, it should introduce Damian Wayne. After a rough patch with Joel Schumacher’s Batman Forever and Batman and Robin, the Caped Crusader got a new chance and was brought back to the big screen in Christopher Nolan’s Batman Begins, the first chapter in The Dark Knight trilogy and which explored the origin story of the title character – from the murder of his parents to his intense training and his decision to become a vigilante in Gotham City.

For some, the most tantalizing aspect of director Matt Reeves’s three-hour opus The Batman was not just a fresh look into the early days of the Caped Crusader. Rather, it was the surprise cameo of Barry Keoghan as the Joker. It’s not that the movie didn’t have its fair share of villains, ranging from big personalities, such as the Riddler and the Penguin, to John Turturro’s menacingly understated turn as crime boss Carmine Falcone. But Reeves took a surprisingly grounded approach to Batman, even more so than previous director Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy. How many members of Batman’s famously colorful rogues gallery could fit this aesthetic?
Turns out, more than you would think. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Reeves is among many filmmakers, including The Suicide Squad director James Gunn and Black Adam star Dwayne Johnson, pitching ambitious DC projects to Warner Bros....

HBO Max Cancels More Animation, Including ‘Batman: The Caped Crusader’ and 2 ‘Looney Tunes’ Projects
HBO Max continues its baffling decisions regarding its animated programming, with six animated projects no longer making their way to the direct-to-consumer streaming platform, TheWrap has confirmed.

While those projects are still in development, some of which are pretty far along, TheWrap has confirmed that “Driftwood,” an original HBO Max animated feature from Victor Courtright, has been fully canceled.
