“Coda,” “Encanto” and “West Side Story” were received top honors at the 37th annual Artios Awards.

The Casting Society honors excellence in casting across feature films, television and theater. The organization held a virtual ceremony on Wednesday, also celebrating its 40th anniversary.

The Casting Society announced its winners in film, television, and theater on Wednesday night, honoring Best Picture front-runner “Coda,” as well as fellow Oscar nominees “West Side Story,” “Don’t Look Up,” and “Encanto” as part of the 37th annual Artios Awards. The virtual ceremony included numerous bold-face names as presenters – including Steven Spielberg, Best Supporting Actress front-runner Ariana DeBose, Best Supporting Actor leader Troy Kotsur, and Brian Cox – as well as a special honor, the Zeitgeist Award, for “Spider-Man: No Way Home.”

Best Picture Oscar nominees Coda, West Side Story and Don’t Look Up were among the winners at the Casting Society’s 37th annual Artios Awards, which were handed out today during a virtual ceremony that streamed live on YouTube. Check out the full list below.

Other films scoring the trophies that honor casting directors include Encanto, The Tender Bar and Spider-Man: No Way Home, which snared the Zeitgeist Award that is presented to a popular film.

Ally Capriotti Grant and Pamela Vallarelli just accrued their fourth and third Emmy nominations, respectively, for their work as casting directors on the fifth installment of Netflix’s structured reality series “Queer Eye.” “It makes us feel like people are watching, people are talking, [and] people are having conversations — and that’s the whole point of the show,” Grant says gratefully about being recognized by TV academy. In our exclusive video interview (watch the webchat above), she and Vallarelli also shed light on the significance of the fifth season’s location, on their approach to finding contestants, and on some of the season’s stories that touched them the most.

In the fifth season of “Queer Eye,” which was released in June 2020, the Fab Five head to Philadelphia and its outskirts to give guests emotionally charged, heartfelt makeovers. Vallarelli explains that after being in the South and Midwest of the U.

Many showbiz luminaries will be quick to tell you that casting is half the battle toward mounting a successful production. But what if your main subjects (dubbed “heroes” in this case) often have no idea they will be carrying the entire narrative? Netflix’s more-than-a-makeover reality series “Queer Eye” seems to have figured that conundrum out already in places as varied as Kansas City and Tokyo in past seasons, as the Fab 5 work their transformational magic on the unsuspecting. But their latest stopover, in Philadelphia and its outskirts (even dipping a toe in the Jersey shore for one episode), proved to wring out even the driest of tear ducts.

“Philly really ticked all the boxes in being a place that’s so culturally rich with so much diversity”, says casting director Pamela Vallarelli. “And it allowed us to show certain heroes that we haven’t had the chance to feature before.

Thursday night featured an opportunity to celebrate the people behind the scenes who put people on the screens. The Casting Society of America announced the winners of the 36th Artios Awards, recognizing the best casting efforts in feature films, television, and theatre. Hosted by Yvette Nicole Brown, it was the first virtual ceremony effort from the organization, as Hollywood continues to make adjustments in light of the ongoing pandemic.

It was also a big night for TV shows a little longer in the tooth, as many of the awards went to series that were already in competition for the 2020 Emmy Awards, meaning that the winners will have little, if any, insight as to this year’s Emmy race. That said, wins for “Normal People,” “Succession,” and “What We Do in the Shadows” are always as welcome as they are well-deserved.

Two films starring Sacha Baron Cohen, “Borat Subsequent Moviefilm” and “The Trial of the Chicago 7,” were among the film winners at the Casting Society of America’s 36th annual Artios Awards, which were presented on Thursday evening in a virtual ceremony hosted by Yvette Nicole Brown.

“Borat” won in the big-budget comedy category, while “Chicago 7” won for big-budget drama.

In other film categories, the award for casting studio or independent films went to “The 40-Year-Old Version” for comedy and “One Night in Miami” for drama. “Minari” won the award for a low-budget film, while “The Surrogate” won for micro budget. “Soul” won the award for casting an animated film.

Television winners included “The Great,” “Euphoria,” “What We Do in the Shadows,” “Succession” and “Normal People.”

Awards for theater, which was closed for most of 2020, included the Broadway shows “Slave Play,” “Tina: The Tina Turner Musical” and “A Soldier’s Play.

Those who cast unscripted series often have thousands of audition tapes to pore through. Since the medium requires a diversity of perspective and personality, but not always special skills, what often catches the eye and helps one rise to the top of the pile is being an “open book,” says Goloka Bolte, co-founder of the Casting Firm, who casts “RuPaul’s Drag Race.” This willingness to share one’s true self can help make stars — or at least social-media sensations. The Artios Awards splits most of its film categories by budget. The casting team behind Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood took the Artios trophy for Big Budget Drama, while the casting crew for Rian Johnson’s Knives Out won for Big Budget Comedy.

“Jesus Christ Superstar Live in Concert” was one of the many winners on day two of the Creative Arts Emmys Sunday, taking the award for Outstanding Variety Special (Live), which resulted in its producers John Legend, Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Weber getting the final trophy needed to become Egot members.

The trio, who now are among the few performers who have won an Emmy, a Grammy, an Oscar and a Tony, celebrated the five Emmy wins in total for “Superstar” over the two-day award ceremony that honors the best and the brightest in reality television, variety series and nonfiction programming, among others.
