Celebrating 7 Years Of The Sports Drama 22 Yards
Image
Subhash K Jha celebrates the sports drama 22 Yards which released in 2018, in this special This Day That Year installment.

Normally, I wouldn’t trust a hero named Ron Roy. It sounds like an alias for scamsters in the stock market. But no. Barun Sobti plays the cricket talent manager for real. The way Sobti says his lines, they seem to be real words and not bumper sticker wisdom hurled at us in exaggerated tones.

He just knows.

Sobti holds together a film about cricket and its machinations, where some characters are stilted while others are unsure of what they are doing. Sobti makes us overlook the glaring errors and glitches. For example, Ron’s right-hand man, Boston, is played by two different actors with a passing resemblance.

Did they really think they could get away with it? When it comes to cricket, Indians tend to overlook many glitches. Luckily for us,...

Year Ender: Best Ott Serials Of 2024
Image
Not only did movies shine on the big screen, but there were also some superb shows in the Ott space. Subhash K Jha shares his picks for the best streaming series for 2024.

Looking back at the plethora of offerings for the year that was, it seems to be a mixed bag. Nothing as radically disappointing as The Archies, though.Come to think of it, some of the series in 2024 outshone what we had on offer in 2023.

1. Heeramandi

Breathlessly awaited, Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Heeramandi is a fountain of gorgeousness. Every frame is a work of art. Every episode, a tapestry of immortality. Nothing like Heeramandi had been seen on the digital platform. What a waste of such exquisite resources! This series belonged on the big screen. If all goes well, it will end up there. Meanwhile, the series on Netflix, is a life saver for the shoddy content the platform has dished out this year.

Kohrra Is An Indian Noir Series – And The Latest Hit For Netflix
Image
This post contains slight spoilers for Netflix's "Kohrra."

Over the years, Indian crime thrillers or procedural-centered dramas on Netflix have performed really well, appealing to global audiences with their layered take on institutional efficiency and our understanding of how these systems work. Examples such as "Sacred Games" and "Pataal Lok" come to mind, and following this trend of complex, subversive entries in the genre is "Kohrra" (roughly translated to "fog"), which is currently topping Netflix India charts and is ranked pretty high in the Top 10 across South Asia and the Middle East (via Variety). Despite the crime procedural genre being oversaturated at this point, "Kohrra" manages to take specific tropes and subvert them thoroughly, especially when it comes to the portrayal of hegemonic politics of the "romance in the mustard field" trope.

"Kohrra" opens with a murder in a field, where a layer of dense fog hangs over the scene.

‘Kohrra’ was shot during 3rd wave of Covid-19
Image
Sudip Sharma, the creator of the recently released crime-drama streaming series ‘Kohrra’, has shared that they shot for the series during the third wave of the Covid-19 pandemic in India, and it greatly helped them to bring in the authenticity.

Sudip said: “What really helps is shooting on location to bring in the authenticity. The Covid third wave scare that we faced actually worked in our favour because we went to Punjab and parked ourselves before the third wave started raging across. And in the process were living the land of Punjab and imbibing its culture.”

Tanya Bami, series head at Netflix, who’s a Punjabi herself, concurred saying the show appeals to the audience across the spectrum.

She said: “The viewing experience truly reflects what the team felt and delivered because they soaked in so much of the vibe of that place that it all shows on the screen...
