After scoring robust box office results regionally, Egyptian thriller “Flight 404,” starring Mona Zaki as a woman whose tainted past resurfaces as she is about to embark on a pilgrimage to Mecca, is getting a small but significant rollout in the U.S. and Europe.
Directed by Hani Khalifa, “Flight 404” sees Zaki – who starred in the Arabic adaptation of hit dramedy “Perfect Strangers” – playing an Egyptian woman named Ghada who is about to board a flight to participate in the Hajj, the annual Muslim pilgrimage to the holy site of Mecca in Saudi Arabia to atone for past misdeeds, when she is forced to face a sudden emergency requiring lots of cash. This prompts Ghada to reconnect with shady people from her past from whom she had long distanced herself.
Since releasing in Egypt on Jan. 25, “Flight 404” has scored more than 450,000 admissions across the Middle East and North Africa (Mena) region,...

Pretentious is never a word you want associated with your film. It has a connotation that just never serves your project well, in the least. Unfortunately, Luxor, despite some strong visuals and a nice central performance, can’t help but give off that vibe. It’s palpable throughout a picture that wants to be hypnotic, but instead mostly winds up being frustrating. Now, that doesn’t make this a bad movie, but it’s one that’s too hit or miss, at least for me, to recommend. I’m in the minority when it comes to this flick, so keep that in mind, but when it opens this week, I’ll be one of the few not quite able to sing its praises… The movie is a drama, mixed with a little romance. Hana (Andrea Riseborough) is a British aid worker returning to the ancient city of Luxor, where she’s previously been before.

Zeina Durra’s second feature is shooting in Egypt.
UK actress Andrea Riseborough and French-Lebanese actor Karim Saleh have signed to star in Zeina Durra’s contemporary romance Luxor, which is now shooting against the backdrop of Egypt’s world-famous archaeological site.
Riseborough, seen most recently in Kindness Of Strangers and Nancy, plays a UK aid worker who heads to the ancient city of Luxor for a break from her work at a clinic on the Jordanian-Syrian border, where she treats victims of the Syrian war. She rekindles a former relationship with an archaeologist, played by Saleh, whose credits include TV series Counterpart and Transparent.
