It was after a hectic day photographing Oscar-toting winners at the
Academy Awards, that Rafael Lanus realized it was time to give
filmmaking a chance: "I want to tell those stories that have meaning in
my life and, hopefully... win one of those."
Rafael, 34, was born and raised in Buenos Aires, Argentina, the youngest child among five siblings. At the age of 22, he moved to Los Angeles with his two-year old son, Agustin. The city's diversity, a megalopolis of social, cultural and economic issues planted the seed of what would ultimately become an intense interest in exploring these topics through film.
For over ten years, and caught in life's daily grind, Rafael put these nascent aspirations aside opting for another of his passions: becoming a highly respected photographer. He covered major events including the Academy Awards, Golden Globes, various concerts and sports, and produced editorial and hard news features that were published in many of the world's major magazines, newspapers and web sites. In early 2010, Rafael decided to dive into the world of filmmaking, earning a Certificate in Direction with distinctions from UCLA.
Rafael's unique experiences as a photographer and extensive travels through Latin America, Europe and Africa granted him the sensibility required to understand the intricacies of modern-day immigration in his first short film, Underprivileged: the coming of age struggle of a teenage illegal immigrant in the United States.
