The highly-anticipated Daisy Edgar-Jones and Jacob Elordi romance “On Swift Horses” will make its U.S. premiere at the 2025 SXSW Film & TV Festival. The film’s start marks the festival’s end.

IndieWire can announce that the epic from “Fellow Travelers” director Daniel Minahan is the Closing Night feature for SXSW. As previously confirmed, “Another Simple Favor” will make its world premiere as the Opening Night selection; Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg’s Apple TV+ series “The Studio” is the Opening Night TV premiere. Back in 1922, after an extended battle with the censors of the time (who were unhappy with the subject matter of “doctors creating artificial life and attempting to play God”), Goldwyn Pictures released a silent horror film called A Blind Bargain, which starred the legendary Lon Chaney as both Dr. Arthur Lamb and his assistant, the Ape Man. Sadly, A Blind Bargain went on to become a lost film, as MGM destroyed the original negative years after they took over Goldwyn Pictures, and the last surviving print is thought to have burned in the same 1965 fire in Vault #7 on the MGM backlot that also resulted in the loss of London After Midnight and other Lon Chaney films. Exclusive: Will Atlas has joined More/Medavoy Management. He will work as a manager representing writers, directors, and actors.

For the past three years, Atlas was at upstart talent agency Hyperion which recently closed down, with founder Ryan Bartlett and agents Austin Leshay and Atlas all landing new jobs. Bartlett is at Independent Artist Group; Leshay at Buchwald.

At Hyperion, Atlas did stints as a talent and lit agent, working with such clients as Shailene Woodley, Xochitl Gomez, Ashton Sanders, Natasha Behnam, Isidora Goreshter, Spence Moore II, Leah McNamara, Allen Maldonado, and Jake Horowitz.

Prior to joining Hyperion, Atlas worked as an assistant or coordinator for producers Jeff Robinov (Studio 8) and Arnon Milchan (New Regency), the film sales & finance group at CAA and film acquisitions at Relativity Media.

I first watched the indie sci-fi movie The Vast of Night at Fantastic Fest in 2019, and I still think about it five years later, shocked that the director still hasn't made another movie since then. The Vast of Night is a lo-fi sci-fi film set in the late 1950s one Friday night in the fictional desert town of Cayuga, New Mexico. Kurt Russell has joined Matthew McConaughey in The Rivals Of Amziah King, an upcoming thriller from the director of sci-fi gem The Vast Of The Night.

The Vast Of The Night, a low-budget sci-fi film released in 2019, is excellent and you should watch it if you haven’t already. In directly related news, the filmmaker behind it, Andrew Patterson, has been busy making his follow-up: a crime thriller called The Rivals Of Amziah King.

Filming has already been completed, but it’s only now being revealed that Patterson has managed to corral an impressive supporting cast for the production. Matthew McConaughey stars, and per Deadline, is flanked by Kurt Russell, Cole Sprouse, Owen Teague, Rob Morgan, Jake Horowitz and Angelina LookingGlass.

Little is known about the plot, though a press release from Black Bear, its financing company, says that it’s a “deeply atmospheric, character-focused crime thriller set against the unique backdrop of remote Oklahoma.

There are rumors circulating that Matthew McConaughey (Dallas Buyers Club) and the legendary Kurt Russell (Big Trouble in Little China) might end up sharing the screen in an upcoming Yellowstone sequel series – if McConaughey likes the script, whenever it might land on his desk. But while we wait to find out what’s going to happen with that project, Deadline has revealed that McConaughey and Russell just worked together on the recently wrapped crime thriller The Rivals of Amziah King! Exclusive: Black Bear on Tuesday announced the supporting cast for its Matthew McConaughey film The Rivals of Amziah King, which has wrapped production.

Actors set to join include Golden Globe nominee Kurt Russell (Once Upon a Time in Hollywood), Cole Sprouse (Lisa Frankenstein), Owen Teague (Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes), Scott Shepherd (Killers of the Flower Moon), Rob Morgan (Mudbound), Tony Revolori (The Grand Budapest Hotel), Jake Horowitz (Bones and All) and newcomer Angelina LookingGlass.

The Rivals‘ plot is being kept under wraps, though the project is described as a character-focused crime thriller set against the backdrop of rural Oklahoma. So…what is sci-fi? It’s not the easiest question to answer when “sci-fi elements” permeate so many of the biggest blockbusters: thought-provoking genre concepts flattened into one-size-fits-all franchise fodder that make countless titles “feel” and, on occasion, even look the same.

Yes, science fiction is rooted in profound origins, examining humanity’s deep-seated fear of itself and the intimidating possibility of worlds unknown. But the last two decades have seen a metaphoric rush on sci-fi storytelling that’s left the once niche subgenre a supersaturated movie market. On the one hand, that’s produced an onslaught of sci-fi(ish) titles that aren’t always up to snuff. But on the other, it’s prompted some of the best sci-fi films ever made. Masterworks like “Everything Everywhere All at Once” and “Nope” both arrived in the past two years, and top our list at number five and number eight respectively.

It’s that time year again—when one might, upon their daily neighborhood perambulation, casually stumble upon a man dressed in a blood-splattered full-body jumpsuit and think to themself, this is perfectly fine and normal. Bones and All is the acclaimed cannibal romance reteaming Luca Guadagnino and Timothée Chalamet following their work together on the Sundance breakout Call Me by Your Name.

The MGM film written by Guadagnino’s regular collaborator David Kajganich —who’d previously penned his features Bigger Splash and Suspiria — is based on the 2015 novel of the same name by Camille DeAngelis. Timothée Chalamet is returning to the big screen alongside "Waves" actor Taylor Russell, as the two find themselves at the center of an unusual cannibalism romance. "Bones and All," based on Camille DeAngelis's 2015 novel of the same name, is an indie coming-of-age tale about first loves Maren (Russell) and Lee (Chalamet), who embark on a thousand-mile-long journey as they're haunted by their terrifying pasts. Italian producer Lorenzo Mieli gave a spirited and often humorous rundown of his career as a producer working with directors such as Luca Guadagnino and Paolo Sorrentino during a keynote talk at the London Film Festival Monday.

Mieli is best known for his work on HBO’s hit TV adaptation of Elena Ferrante’s My Brilliant Friend. His most recent credits include Guadagnino’s Venice-winner Bones And All and Sorrentino’s The Hand Of God.

However, Mieli revealed that his working relationship with Sorrentino goes back many years to when he was an executive at Fremantle and was tasked with producing the music competition show The X-Factor.

“I asked Paolo Sorrentino to be a judge on X-Factor. That was my first idea,” Mieli said. “Luckily for him, he said no, but he was tempted. We spent a few days talking about it. But that was my idea for The X-Factor.

The annual American Film Institute (AFI) festival has finally announced its full lineup.

AFI Fest runs Wednesday, November 2 through Sunday, November 6 and includes 125 titles to be screened in Los Angeles. Opening night kicks off with AppleTV+ documentary “Selena Gomez: My Mind and Me” directed by Alek Keshishian. Steven Spielberg’s semi-autobiographical drama “The Fabelmans” will close the festival.

The full lineup also includes special screenings for “Bones and All,” Sundance winner “Nanny,” Robert Downey Jr.’s documentary “Sr.,” “Le Pupille,” and “Women Talking.”

Mark Rylance plays a decidedly creepy oddball in the official trailer for Luca Guadagnino’s Bones and All, which was dropped on Thursday by MGM.

“You look like the kind that’s convinced themselves he’s got this under his thumb,” Sully, Rylance’s character, at one point tells cannibal drifter Lee, played by Timothée Chalamet, as he joins Maren (Taylor Russell) on a cross-country odyssey to understand why she has to kill and eat the people that love her.

“But you pull on one little thread and already…” Sully adds during a campfire chat amid jump cuts of Lee choking and chopping up people as blood flows and a version of Leonard Cohen’s “You Want It Darker” song plays in the background.

MGM has tapped Warner Bros. to be its new international partner, giving Warners a shot at having a piece of the James Bond franchise. One caveat, the arrangement doesn’t include the next James Bond film.

The two companies announced the arrangement on Sunday.

MGM’s previous partner was Universal, which released 2022 James Bond installment No Time To Die internationally, as well as such high-profile MGM as House of Gucci and Licorice Pizza.

Under the pact, Warner Bros. International’s distribution division will handle all Warners movies, beginning with the release of Bones and All in November of 2022 and Creed III, which is set for 2023.

Universal Pictures International will still distribute MGM and Orion Pictures Till later this year and Women Talking in the first quarter of 2023. Bond 26, the next chapter in the James Bond series of films, will also be distributed...
