Our Wtf Happened to This Horror Movie? video series often covers older films. You may have noticed that we have a particular fondness for movies from the 1980s. But occasionally we cover more recent releases as well, and the movie we’re looking at with today’s episode of Wtf Happened to This Horror Movie? was just released six years ago. The film in question is Blair Witch (watch it Here), and you can find out all about it by watching the video embedded above.

Directed by Adam Wingard from a screenplay written by Simon Barrett, Blair Witch is, of course, a follow-up to The Blair Witch Project. This one has the following synopsis:

A young man and his friends venture into the Black Hills Forest in Maryland to uncover the mystery surrounding his missing sister. Many believe her disappearance 17 years earlier is connected to the legend of the Blair Witch.

This May, Trick or Treat and Krampus director Michael Dougherty will unleash Godzilla: King of the Monsters starring Vera Farmiga and Millie Bobby Brown on the masses in a theater near you. For those who might not know, the film is the follow-up to Gareth Edwards's Godzilla starring Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Elizabeth Olsen, and Bryan Cranston and in a roundabout way Jordan Vogt-Roberts' Kong: Skull Island starring Tom Hiddleston, Brie Larson, Samuel L. A few months ago, the veil of secrecy swirling around a movie known as The Woods was lifted, as it was revealed to be Blair Witch, a sequel to the 1999 classic The Blair Witch Project. Despite the early buzz from the Comic-Con trailer, Blair Witch wasn't a hit with critics (36% on Rotten Tomatoes) and it under-performed at the box office ($16.5 million domestic, $25 million worldwide), although it was budgeted at just $5 million. You can enter the forest for some Thoreauvian wisdom, but end up being engulfed by its overwhelming monotony. As we revisit the world of “Blair Witch”, we are reminded that the found footage genre has come a long way from its humble origins, but perhaps some footage is better off not “found.”

Adam Wingard is no novice when it comes to creating tense atmospheres in horror/thriller films. With films like “You’re Next” and “The Guest”, Wingard has already proven his mastery over several key aesthetics necessary to the horror genre. In “Blair Witch”, he repeats all of them while also adding some of the more cheapening effects to recreate the once novel experience that was “The Blair Witch Project” and gives it the Hollywood treatment.

The 1999 original terrified audiences with its ‘found footage’ shtick, but there are few surprises left down in the woods today

In the mid-1890s, Parisians reportedly ran screaming from the Lumière brothers’ experimental short film L’arrivée d’un train en gare de La Ciotat, terrified that the train coming towards them was about to run them down. A century later, cinemagoers were traumatised by The Blair Witch Project, unable to determine whether its faux-documentary story was fact or fiction. Kickstarting the “found footage” boom that has dominated 21st-century horror, directors Daniel Myrick and Eduardo Sánchez brilliantly reminded us that cinema’s greatest trick has always been in convincing us that what we are watching is “real”.

Distributors Artisan famously picked up the no-budget The Blair Witch Project, with its unknown cast, for $1m and watched it make hundreds of millions worldwide. Now franchise inheritors Lionsgate have come searching for equally rich pickings.

When I reviewed the original The Blair Witch Project, it was March of 1999. I saw it in Austin, in the apartment of a couple of my friends, thanks to Harry Knowles, who had been sent a VHS copy of the film by the filmmakers during its Sundance run. I went to Austin in February, and Harry had been sitting on his copy, waiting for us to get to town. We were there for the third Quentin Tarantino film festival at the still-young Alamo Drafthouse, and on the last night of the festival, my friends and I were set to hit the road as soon as the movies ended. We were road-tripping, and between the four of us, we figured we’d be able to do the entire drive back to La straight through with no stops for sleep. Harry asked us not to leave town right after the film, though.

It seems quaint now, and that's a generous word for it. But when The Blair Witch Project debuted in 1999, horror movies felt a seismic jolt. Shot for peanuts ($60,000), the film tracked three film student tracking evil in the Maryland woods with camcorders. The alleged "found footage" showed virtually nothing — and scared us anyway. So much so that the film became a box-office sensation ($248 million worldwide) and spawned a gimmick that's been ripped off so many times its novelty is in tatters. The awful official sequel, 2000's Book of Shadows: Blair Witch 2, disappeared without a trace.

It’s scary walking in the foot prints of a legend. It’s not an easy task to try to tackle a sequel to one of the most iconic horror films ever made. Scratch that – one of the most iconic films ever made, period. You will never be able to catch the magic of the original. It was a once in a lifetime thing. It was an event. It was one of the first films to fully utilize the strength and broad reach of the internet (still in its infancy) to create a buzz that we now associate as viral marketing. I remember seeing the poster in the lobby of the theater one night and immediately going on the computer the next day to search what happened to these kids. Reading about these kids that disappeared and how their footage was found a year later sparked a level of intrigue...

Tom Hanks and Clint Eastwood’s real-life drama about airline pilot Sully (Warner Bros.) far surpassed all expectations, making nearly $10 million more than my prediction with an opening weekend of $35 million in 3,525 theaters, also making it one of the biggest openings for a movie opening the weekend after Labor Day. The Screen Gems thriller When the Bough Breaks disappointed compared to some of their similar releases, taking second place with around where we predicted with around $14 million. The lower profile animated film The Wild Life (Summit/Lionsgate) did end up in fifth place behind Don’t Breathe and Suicide Squad, but with a measly $3.3 million in 2,493 theaters. As expected, Relativity’s theatrical return with its own horror/thriller The Disappointments Room...

Way back in the 20th century — 1999, to be precise — a couple of indie filmmakers called Daniel Myrick and Eduardo Sánchez came up with the truly brilliant idea to make a movie on an ultra-low budget by giving cameras to three actors and setting them loose in the Maryland woods to improvise a “documentary” around an invented backstory about a search for the “true” story of a legendary local witch.

I think I can get behind this growing trend in Hollywood filmmaking to basically ignore sequels in a franchise that people don’t like. We’ve got talk, then, of a new Alien sequel that’ll scrub – or overlook – films three and four in that particular series. The X-Men franchise has rid itself of the story constraints of the likes of X-Men: The Last Stand, even to the point of taking a dig at the film (not wisely, as it turned out) in X-Men: Apocalypse.

And now the third Blair Witch film comes along, which may as well have Blair Witch 2 plastered on the poster, such is the non-existent shrift it gives to the staggeringly bad Blair Witch: Book Of Shadows.

It’s been more than 17 years since The Blair Witch Project arrived in theaters and changed the way Hollywood viewed horror, and filmmaking in general, for better or worse. Its low budget and hand-held camera style revolutionized the way studios would think — particularly after they saw their return on investment — in an effect felt all the way up to today. Equally ground-breaking in its successful and smartly marketed internet campaign, Eduardo Sanchez and Daniel Myrick’s feature was the sort of viral sensation simply not achievable in today’s saturated marketplace. We're just a couple of weeks away from the release of Blair Witch, the upcoming sequel to the 1999 found footage horror flick The Blair Witch Project. While the marketing for the movie has been ramping up recently, it looks like Lionsgate and the filmmakers started marketing the movie quite some time ago, as a very strange Kickstarter campaign has been discovered online. The campaign dates back to 2014 and appears to be a piece of viral marketing material for the upcoming movie.

The Kickstarter claims to be funding a documentary called The Absence of Closure. The campaign was created by someone named Lisa Arlington. It just so happens that an actress by the name of Callie Hernandez is playing a character by the name of Lisa in Blair Witch, and she makes a very brief appearance in the trailer for the documentary in the Kickstarter campaign. Lionsgate recently unleashed its first TV spot for Adam Wingard and Simon Barrett’s Blair Witch Project sequel, hitting theaters this September.

Simply titled Blair Witch, the film features James Allen McCune as Heather Donahue’s brother, who’s obsessed with finding out what happened to his sister and her friends in the woods of Maryland in 1999. The new commercials take viewers back to the house where we last saw Mike propped up in the corner.

When Comic-Con attendees last week settled into their seats to watch a screening of a new horror film called The Woods, they had no idea that they were about to witness, arguably, the convention's biggest surprise. The Woods turned out to be a secretly produced sequel to the 1999 horror classic The Blair Witch Project, and by all accounts, the new film also turned out to be surprisingly good.

The film was shot and edited last year under the direction of Adam Wingard and his script collaborator Simon Barrett. The pair had previously worked together on The Guest and the critically acclaimed home-invasion horror flick You're Next. Their sequel to Blair Witch picks up where the original film left off and places its characters back in the forbidding woods near Burkittsville, Maryland, where numerous other young people have gone mysteriously missing.

It’s been less than a day since Adam Wingard and Simon Barrett threw me for a proverbial loop, and I am still sitting here absolutely stunned that their latest collaboration, formerly titled The Woods, was revealed to be Blair Witch, a second sequel to the highly successful 1999 landmark film, The Blair Witch Project. Friday night at Comic-Con, horror fans were surprised to find out that Adam Wingard’s new project is an official sequel to “The Blair Witch Project.” Previously titled “The Woods” to throw people off, “Blair Witch” stars James Allen McCune as the brother of Heather Donahue, original character from the first film, who sets out to find out what happened to his missing sister. Previously revealed to be 'The Woods,' Adam Wingard's latest is actually a sequel to 'The Blair Witch Project!' Lionsgate has finally revealed at the San Diego Comic-Con and a new trailer is now below. The film stars James Allen McCune, Callie Hernandez, Brandon Scott, Valorie Curry Corbin Reid, and Wes Robinson.

A group of college students once again venture into the Black Hills Forest in Maryland to uncover the mysteries surrounding the disappearance of James’ sister who many believe is connected to the legend of the Blair Witch. At first the group is hopeful, especially when a pair of locals offer to act as guides through the dark and winding woods, but as the endless night wears on, the group is visited by a menacing presence. Slowly, they begin to realize the legend is all too real and more sinister than they could have imagined.

Consider the pitch: A group of college students uproot and plot course for their nearby woodland for a camping trip only to discover they are not alone. Toss in Pov camerawork and it’s all but certain that said project will draw comparisons to The Blair Witch Project, Eduardo Sánchez and Daniel Myrick’s micro-budget masterstroke that ushered in a new genre of horror back in ’99 – that is, unless said project has been in the works as a Blair Witch sequel all along.

Pulling that rug out from just about everyone was director Adam Wingard (The Guest, You’re Next) who, along with screenwriter Simon Barret, had been toiling away at an eerie new horror flick known as The Woods. Unlike, say, 10 Cloverfield Lane, Wingard’s bait-and-switch actually involved rolling out a full-blown trailer for The Woods, which really makes this reveal all the more satisfying.

In a Hollywood marketing machine that dates films half-a-decade (or more) in advance with constant updates reminding you to be excited for their latest property, how do you genuinely surprise an audience? Lionsgate, perhaps taking a note from Paramount’s 10 Cloverfield Lane, has revealed at Comic-Con that the next film from You’re Next and The Guest director Adam Wingard, previously titled The Woods, is in fact an entirely different beast.

That’s right: it’s actually a surprise sequel to The Blair Witch Project. EW has profiled the making of the film, which follows James Allen McCune‘s character, the brother of Heather Donahue’s character from the original hit back in 1999. “They knew they wanted it to be a continuation of the first film, using Heather’s brother,” says Wingard. “That was what they came to us with.”

He adds, “From there, we were left to our own devices to figure it out.

Back in May we reported that there was a teaser trailer (Click Here) for a film called The Woods, but we really didn't know anything about it until now!

The original The Blair Witch Project was a triumph of marketing as much as anything else. So consider it a tribute that The Guest director Adam Wingard pulled off a legitimately great piece of misdirection tonight, when a Comic-Con screening revealed that his previously teased backwoods monster thriller The Woods was, in fact, a sequel to the 1999 horror phenomenon, titled simply Blair Witch.

The trailer for the movie shows James Allen McCune as the supposed brother of the original movie’s ill-fated Heather, going off on his own found-footage adventure with his own crew of largely unlikable friends. (At least handheld camera technology seems to have gotten less relentlessly unpleasant in the last 17 years.) It's a secret that has been under wraps for years, now Lionsgate has revealed that "The Guest" and "You're Next" director Adam Wingard's new horror film "The Woods" has scored a new title - "Blair Witch".

Lionsgate has confirmed that Adam Wingard's upcoming horror film The Woods, will have a screening at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con. The screening will take place at 7pm Pt, Friday, July 22.The film stars Callie Hernandez, James Allen McCune, Brandon Scott, Wes Robinson, and Corbin Reid.

The Woods involve a group of college students on a camping trip who discover they are not alone.

The Woods doesn't hit theaters until September 16th, but there is already a lot of buzz surrounding the upcoming film from director Adam Wingard and writer Simon Barrett. Soon the movie will make even more noise in San Diego, as EW has announced that The Woods will have its first public screening at Comic-Con.

According to EW, The Woods Comic-Con screening will take place at 7:00pm Pt on Friday, July 22nd. No other details are known at this time, but we'll be sure to keep Daily Dead readers updated on further details.

Every year there seems to be one horror film that can rise above the endless stream of low budget, middle of the road, run of the mill horror flicks that studios push out constantly and this year, Adam Wingard's The Woods looks to be that film, and the first teaser trailer for the film has dropped, and it is promising "a new beginning for horror films." A bold statement, sure. But the critical praise for the film that the first half of the trailer focuses on seems to back that up.

Set against a spine-chilling, almost melancholic rendition of “Every Breath You Take,” Lionsgate has premiered the haunting first trailer for The Woods, an all-new horror thriller hatched by the creative minds behind The Guest and You’re Next.

That’s Adam Wingard and writer Simon Barrett, who looked to have cooked up the camping trip from hell in today’s first teaser. Opening with serene establishing shots of the great outdoors, the tension gradually begins to build and build until we are introduced to a “group of college students on a camping trip who discover they are not alone.”
