Attention, Spn Family. You’re invited to a Supernatural reunion, though it takes an alternate form from what you’d assume. Word has come down the wire that Jared Padalecki and Misha Collins are officially joining Jensen Ackles for the fifth and final season of The Boys as guest stars.
Eric Kripke, who created The Boys for television, also created Sam Winchester and Castiel, Padalecki and Collins’ respective Supernatural characters. Supernatural fans have waited years for these three to reunite, and it’s only natural for them to cross paths on The Boys before the show goes the way of the dodo.
The trio announced they’re getting the band back together via an Instagram video, proclaiming they’ve “got work to do” for The Boys Season 5. Padalecki and Collins’s roles are being kept under wraps, but that doesn’t mean you can’t start celebrating what is sure to be a momentous occasion.

As the European Film Market kicks off Feb. 13 in Berlin with a new market head, Tanja Meissner, at the helm, this year’s buzziest titles suggest the industry will be looking toward tried-and-true genre fare and splashy, star-driven packages to thaw the winter chill.
Bankable stars are expected to heat things up in Berlin, with Ari Aster and A24’s “Eddington”, Guy Ritchie’s “Wife & Dog”, Ernest Dickerson’s untitled hitman thriller and Kantemir Balagov’s “Butterfly Jam” showcasing how marquee names remain a safe bet as uncertainty continues to reign in the theatrical market.
On the genre side of things, horror is still expected to scare up sales, with buyers looking to sink their fangs into Isabelle Huppert’s 16th-century vampire mystery “The Blood Countess” and Jacob Chase’s killer canine genre-bender “Bad Boy,” starring Ke Huy Quan and Lili Reinhart. Amazon MGM’s powerful drama Nickel Boys, based on Colson Whitehead’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, is set to make its digital debut. The Oscar-nominated film, which had its world premiere at the Telluride Film Festival before a limited theatrical release in December 2024, has garnered critical acclaim for its harrowing portrayal of injustice. Here’s everything you need to know about when and where you can stream Nickel Boys online.
What is Nickel Boys About?
Nickel Boys is inspired by the true story of the infamous Dozier School for Boys, a reform school in Florida known for its brutal treatment of students. The film follows Elwood Curtis (Ethan Herisse) and Turner (Brandon Wilson), two African-American boys navigating the horrors of the Nickel Academy in the 1960s. As Elwood clings to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s teachings, Turner adopts a more cynical approach to survival—forcing both to make impossible choices in a deeply unjust system.

Big names, high concepts, and crowd-pleasing thrills are the order of the day at this year’s European Film Market, where commercial fare is dominating over the usual arthouse prestige plays, reflecting an industry uncertain of the future of the theatrical business in the post-covid world. Action, horror, and comedy are leading the charge, with star-driven projects like Guy Ritchie’s Wife & Dog (Benedict Cumberbatch, Rosamund Pike), Mary Bronstein’s If I Had Legs I’d Kick You (Rose Byrne, Conan O’Brien, A$AP Rocky), and Ernest Dickerson’s untitled hitman thriller (Samuel L. Jackson, Daveed Diggs) among the titles generating early buzz.

A week is a long time: Last time I penned this very newsletter we led with the headline ‘Emilia’s Oscar March’. Not the same story this week. An unprecedented situation has played out over the past seven days during which the initial frontrunner for multiple (and possibly record-breaking) Oscar wins has been seeing its chances go up in smoke. This is due to Emilia Pérez lead Karla Sofía Gascón’s highly offensive and frankly vile tweets unearthed from several years back, which first emerged late last week. You’ve likely all seen the tweets, but what has happened since is the film’s maker, co-stars and crew trying to tout the film in spite of, not because of, its lead. At the same time, Gascón’s...

For the first time since 2022, this year’s South by Southwest Film & Television Festival does not overlap with the Oscars — which seems to have given SXSW curators a richer field to pull from, as the 2025 lineup has no shortage of buzzy titles and stars. Running from March 7-15, the festival will present 111 movies and 17 series featuring the likes of Blake Lively, Anna Kendrick, Seth Rogen, Daisy Edgar-Jones, Jacob Elordi, Ben Affleck, Nicole Kidman, Matthew McConaughey, Issa Rae, Jenna Ortega, Daveed Diggs and more.
The festival will open with “Another Simple Favor,” the sequel to the 2018 comedic thriller “A Simple Favor,” once again starring Lively and Kendrick and directed by Paul Feig. The new film is set in Capri, Italy, where Stephanie (Kendrick) and Emily (Lively) travel for Emily’s wedding to a rich Italian businessman; as the logline reveals, “murder and betrayal” ensue. How do the 2025 Oscars Best Picture nominees stack up on Rotten Tomatoes? And does the film with the highest freshness rating have a better shot at winning the big prize?
While critics’ scores don’t determine the Best Picture lineup (there are thousands of highly rated movies each year), once the lineup is selected by the Motion Picture Academy, there are at least a few tea leaves worth reading. For instance, the only film to win Best Picture in the last 10 years with a freshness rating lower than 90 percent is Green Book, which has a Tomatometer score of just 77 percent.
Last year’s winner, Oppenheimer, holds a formidable 93 percent, but it didn’t rank first among it’s competitors. That distinction went to The Holdovers, which has a rating of 97 percent. So, a movie doesn’t have to have the highest score to win Best Picture, but it certainly helps its chances.

Even if you haven’t seen “Nickel Boys,” the film adaptation of Colson Whitehead’s 2019 novel, you’ve likely heard how it was shot from first-person perspective of its two protagonists. Director RaMell Ross and cinematographer Jomo Fray filmed scenes in uninterrupted shots as if the audience is moving (the camera sometimes physically attached to the actor), listening, and watching through the perspective of Elwood (Ethan Herisse) and Turner (Brandon Wilson). The ground-breaking approach to filming, which Ross dubbed “sentient Pov,” meant an equally radical approach to editing. No longer was the audience in its familiar seat of omniscient spectator, denying the editor the ability to crosscut and seamlessly switch perspectives across the action. “Nickel Boys” editor Nicholas Monsour told IndieWire he had to “unlearn” years of what had become second nature when editing traditional scripted narrative projects, most notably for Jordan Peele.

Helen Hunt wowed audiences as storm-chaser Dr. Jo Harding in 1996’s Twister. Naturally, fans assumed she’d be back in the 2024 follow-up, Twisters. But to everyone’s surprise, the Hollywood actress isn’t part of the new movie. Not even a cameo.

Nickel Boys is set in Jim Crow-era Florida. It follows two Black teens, Elwood Curtis (Ethan Herisse) and Turner (Brandon Wilson), who are forced to endure the brutal conditions of Nickel Academy, which is a reformatory for boys. While Turner teaches survival through cynicism, Elwood clings to his belief in justice, despite the horrors around them. Their friendship offers a glimmer of hope amidst a backdrop of systemic racism and violence.
The performances by Ethan Herisse and Brandon Wilson bring something special to the table. Without their chemistry, Nickel Boys does not work as well as it does. This is the first major feature film role for both Herisse and Wilson, but it certainly will not be the last. Nickel Boys is now playing in New York theaters and opens in Los Angeles on December 20. The movie also stars Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor and Daveed Diggs.

Illustrations by Zoé Maghamès Peters.Artists think about it all the time. What is in me? How am I going to get it out? And what is it going to be once I get it out there? These thoughts are not just the precursor to a practice, but fuel for the creative act. When you think this way, nearly everything in life becomes admissible as evidence of some great work to come: that object, those gestures, her voice, this taste, these words in that order. The resulting practice might merely represent these observations, or it might transform them into new language. When I first speak with the artist and filmmaker RaMell Ross this fall, on a rainy morning in a small and busy PR office in midtown Manhattan, our conversation winds through combinations of questions, prompts, declarations, and answers. Ross’s way of talking, like his filmmaking style, is discursive yet harmonic.

One of the things that appealed to Daveed Diggs as he was considering the film was its honest and unflinching look into the cruelty that existed at that time. But, as Diggs said, the film isn’t just about the past; while some things have changed, he says, there are still similar issues and institutions in place even in today’s America. "It's now or never." MGM + Orion have unveiled the second & final trailer for the film Nickel Boys, which has started playing in select US theaters now. This film is a modern masterpiece and will be on my Top 10 of the year, along with many others. Based on the Pulitzer Prize winning novel from Colson Whitehead, Nickel Boys chronicles the powerful friendship between two African American men navigating the harrowing trials of reform school together in Florida. Nickel Boys stars Ethan Herisse as Elwood, Brandon Wilson as Turner, Hamish Linklater, Fred Hechinger, Daveed Diggs, & Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor. It's presented mainly from the Pov of the two main characters, which gives it an especially distinct look and feel. Reviews add: "By the time the credits roll, Ross will have made a lasting & unique impression of heartbreak on the souls of all who watch his film—precisely the cinematic treatment that Whitehead's novel required.

Some movies are so special that you know you are watching something major despite its flaws. This is the case with Nickel Boys, the narrative feature debut of Academy Award-nominated filmmaker RaMell Ross. With Nickel Boys, Ross takes an entirely distinctive approach to its subject matter, telling a story the likes of which we have seen before in a way that feels unlike anything else you’ve seen before.
Nickel Boys Review
Based on the novel by Colson Whitehead (The Underground Railroad), Nickel Boys tells the story of two teenagers subjected to awful treatment while living at a reform school in North Florida. The story is based on a real-life reform school that made national headlines in the late 2010s when dozens of unmarked graves of victims of the school’s staff were discovered.

Black-ish was a long-running sitcom about the lives of an upper-middle-class Black family living in a predominantly white neighborhood. Andre "Dre" Johnson (Anthony Anderson) grew up in Compton and worries his children are not in touch with their Black roots. While the show is a comedy, Black-ish also examines the nuances of Black identity. Many of Black-ish's best episodes address important, powerful issues.
Dre's perspective is almost always different from that of his wife, parents, children, and colleagues, leading to matters of race, family, and politics being discussed from multiple angles. Because Black-ish was generally a lighthearted comedy, when it delved into topics like police brutality, colorism, and women's health, the episodes carried even more weight. Luckily, the characters in Black-ish are played by talented actors who can deliver heartfelt scenes as well as humorous ones.
