1. “Sex Education” Season 3 (available September 17)
Why Should I Watch? If you’ve yet to discover Laurie Nunn’s charming, sex-positive Netflix series, then you’re about to have a fantastic September. Starring Asa Butterfield, Emma Mackey, Ncuti Gatwa, and Gillian Anderson, “Sex Education” starts out as a show about Otis (Butterfield), the teenage son of a sex therapist (Anderson), who opens his own in-school counseling practice to help his fellow awkward students better understand their various wants and desires. Helped by his bad-girl crush Maeve (Mackey) and cheery best friend Eric (Gatwa), Otis may get in over his head from time to time — he may have the book smarts gleaned from his expert mother, but not the requisite experience — but his heart (and the show’s) is always in the right place.
Bonus Reason: Nunn’s hourlong episodes carry all the intelligence of their top-tier dramatic peers, but the teen romances,...

Netflix's dramedy Dear White People took a brand-new direction for its third season, and it seems season four will be no different. On Aug. 17, the streamer released the official trailer for its upcoming new season, which is set to premiere on Sept. 22. Season four will serve as the show's final run and it will include 10 episodes that'll be in the form of a '90s-inspired musical as the group gets ready for graduation.
"Set against the backdrop of senior year at Winchester as well as a not-so-distant, post-pandemic future, Dear White People Vol. 4 finds our characters looking back at the most formative (and theatrical) year of their lives," the show's synopsis reads. "Both an Afro-futuristic and 90s-inspired musical event, Dear White People Vol. 4 is a can't-miss, farewell experience with one pitch-perfect promise: sometimes the only way to move forward is to throw it back."

Netflix released a trailer for “Dear White People: Vol. 4,” the musical final season premiering Sept. 22, revealing that at least a portion of the season will take place in the future, while the rest will be set during the usual gang’s senior year.
In the trailer, which you can watch below, Sam White (Logan Browning) wears a highly-fashionable face mask and sits across from Lionel (DeRon Horton) as they reminisce over their senior year, when they took part in a ’90s-themed musical, titled “The Varsity Show.”
“Don’t you want that feeling back?” she asks.
Clips of their senior year show the musical moments are not relegated to the stage, with Troy (Brandon B. Bell), for example, doing his best LL Cool J in his dorm, while Reggie (Marque Richardson) sings “Virtual Insanity” at a gun range. But it isn’t all fun and games, as a new Black student...

“This is how we do it!” The cast and crew of “Dear White People” are kicking it old school with the final season of their Netflix original series, and Vol. 4 is looking a lot like the 1990s. The streaming giant announced over the summer that Justin Simien’s television adaptation would end with Season 4, and earlier this month, audiences got their first glimpse at what was going to be a musical-themed goodbye.
The first trailer for the season certainly emphasizes that music will be sung almost everywhere, whether it’s in the halls of Winchester University or on stage, where it’s traditionally housed. But the desire to return to the past for some is met with just as much urgency to forget about it by others. As the trailer shows us, the jubilant ’90s musical comes under fire from a younger generation of Ivy League students.

Netflix’s Dear White People has been portraying racial tensions at a fictional white Ivy League university for three seasons and is set to portray them for one final run once Justin Simien and his team are able to return to filming.
Last month, it was revealed by data from research firm Parrot Analytics that the comedy had received an uptick in viewership as the Black Lives Matters protests were in full force.
Creator Simien tells Deadline that he’s pleased that his show is meeting the cultural moment but it’s under “devastating” and “tragic” circumstances. He explains how the show has been “screaming at a wall” for years.

“Bad Hair” writer and director Justin Simien always intended for his horror-satire film to spark a conversation about the way society relates to appearance (especially around and among black women), but filming the project has equally affected his cast, who shared their own struggles to gain acceptance professionally and learn how to accept themselves personally.

The third season of Dear White People is nearly upon us, and to celebrate, Netflix shared a taste of what we'll be watching in a revealing new trailer. And just to warn you, things are getting switched up in a few big ways.
For starters, Sam (Logan Browning) is no longer the host of the college radio show that started it all (aka the titular "Dear White People"). Instead, seemingly burned out and confused about what she wants to do in life, Sam hands over the reins to Joelle (Ashley Blaine Featherson). Fortunately, Joelle is prepared to shake things up. In addition to that change, we'll get a look at Coco's (Antoinette Robertson) mom, played by Community's Yvette Nicole Brown, as well as what looks like a financial crisis for Gabe (John Patrick Amedori) and some interesting sexual explorations for Lionel (DeRon Horton).

“Think ‘Moonlight’ meets ‘Sex and the City,’ but boiling over with all the tea,” says Joelle (Ashley Blaine Featherson) in the new trailer for “Dear White People” volume three, which premieres on Netflix on Friday, August 2. That may or may not be self-referential about the show itself, but I’d sure watch that. Check out the trailer above.
Created by Justin Simien based on the 2014 independent film he wrote and directed, “Dear White People” is a pointed satire about race relations in the 21st century as seen through the eyes of black students at fictional Winchester University, a mostly white ivy league institution. That includes but is not limited to Sam White (Logan Browning), an activist who hosts the on-campus radio show that gives the series its title; Lionel (DeRon Horton), a gay student journalist trying to fit in and find his voice; and Coco (Antoinette Robertson), an ambitious social climber with lofty ambitions.

Class will be back in session at Winchester College later this summer, when “Dear White People” returns for its third season on Friday, August 2. In addition to revealing Season 3’s trailer, the streaming giant also announced a slew of actors who will guest star on this season, including Yvette Nicole Brown, Blair Underwood, Laverne Cox, Flavor Flav, and the show’s own creator Justin Simien.

After spending the entire second season searching for a secret society on campus called The Order of X, Samantha White (Logan Browning) and Lionel (DeRon Horton) followed some clues that brought them face to face with the show’s narrator, Giancarlo Esposito. However, it remains to be seen if Esposito is indeed part of a secret society, or if said secret society even exists.

Based on Justin Simien’s acclaimed debut indie feature and produced by Lionsgate, Dear White People is set against the backdrop of a predominantly white Ivy League university where racial tensions bubble just below the surface.
The satirical series follows a group of Winchester University’s students of color as they navigate a diverse landscape of social injustice, cultural bias, political correctness (or lack thereof) and activism in the millennial age.

“Dear White People” is returning for its third season later this year with a slate of directors that pays homage to its indie film roots. Ranging from the returning Kimberly Peirce to relative TV newcomers like Justin Tipping, the show continues to give gifted filmmakers a platform to shine.
“I’m so proud of how many female directors we have this season. It’s amazing,” said cast member Ashley Blaine Featherson during a Television Critics Association set visit. Series creator Justin Simien added, “I don’t need the mandate. It’s in the way I live my life. It’s a given to me that black women need to be telling these stories because black women make up the majority of our audience. “
Simien was excited to swoop in on two directors that some people may not have heard of. “Tiffany Johnson, who is amazing — you will be very aware of her.

Netflix unveiled a brand image spot during Sunday’s Bet Awards telecast that highlights black artists who work for the streaming giant.
The spot dubbed “A Great Day in Hollywood” was inspired by the famed 1958 photograph “A Great Day in Harlem” featuring 57 jazz legends — including Charles Mingus, Thelonious Monk, and Count Basie — on the stairs of New York brownstone snapped by photographer Art Kane.
The Netflix spot from director Lacey Duke features 47 black writers, showrunners, actors, and producers. The plan for the spot and the image campaign stemmed from Netflix’s Strong Black Lead initiative designed to foster an “ongoing, intentional focus to talk authentically with the black audience.” A photo similar to “Great Day in Harlem” was taken earlier this month by photographer Kwaku Alston to commemorate the gathering.
The debut comes just two days after Netflix was rocked by the abrupt departure of corporate communications chief Jonathan Friedland...
