David Lynch’s Last On-Screen Performance Became 1 of the Best Movie Endings
Image
One of the best films of the 2020s and the latest in a long lineage of one of the best filmmakers of all time, Steven Spielberg's semi-autobiographical masterpiece The Fabelmansis a fantastic piece of self-reflective dramatic storytelling. It follows the childhood of Sammy Fabelman (played by Gabriel Labelle), a young man in the 1950s and 1960s who becomes enamored by the magic of cinema. The story closely mirrors the actual coming-of-age of Spielberg himself.

Though the film features numerous excellent scenes that draw directly from Spielberg's life, one of the most profound comes at the end of the movie, when teenage Sammy Fabelman has the chance to meet the director of such classic Westerns as Stagecoach and The Searchers: John Ford. Ford, played in a final on-screen performance by the late, great director David Lynch, instills valuable lessons into Sammy in a scene that is one of the best endings in recent film.

Celebrate 'SNL's 50th With 'Saturday Night' on Netflix
Image
This week marks the 50th anniversary celebration of Saturday Night Live (or SNL as it is more colloquially known). In its half-century of running, SNL has become a comedic institution unmatched in television history. Conceived by Lorne Michaels, the visionary who still helms the show to this day, SNL follows an iconic structure that consists of a celebrity host (and monologue),a musical guest, sketches performed by a principal cast, a weekend update news segment, and, always, the declaration of the iconic, "live from New York it's Saturday Night."

A vast number of industry legends have gotten their start on SNL, including the likes of Eddie Murphy, Will Ferrell, Amy Poehler, Julia Louis Dreyfus, Adam Sandler, Tina Fey, and Mike Myers. However, few people know the truth behind SNL's chaotic origins in 1975, or how close the beloved show was to failing to exist at all. Luckily, this is the...

On Feb. 15, NBC will re-air the first-ever episode of “Saturday Night Live.” The telecast comes one day before the network’s three-hour special celebrating the show’s 50th anniversary.

Originally airing on Oct. 11, 1975, the episode was hosted by George Carlin with musical guests Billy Preston and Janice Ian. Dylan O'Brien's Success Continues on Streaming After Twinless World Premiere
Image
Dylan O'Brien's breakout role was Stiles Stilinski in the MTV supernatural teen series Teen Wolf, but since the show's ending, he has established himself as a successful actor. He's had his own dystopian trilogy, The Maze Runner, starred in the two-time Oscar-nominated film Deepwater Horizon, and his latest roles have cemented him as a very successful star.

In 2024, O'Brien attempted a different role as he played a real person on Saturday Night. The film is based on the late-night live sketch comedy series Saturday Night Live, most specifically the show's premiere night in 1975, and O'Brien played Dan Aykroyd. Following the critical success of the film, Saturday Night is a new hit on Netflix, Tudum reports.

Saturday Night
Image
Saturday Night would make for a very solid double-bill with a Muppets movie. And not just because there are Muppets in it — well, primitive Muppets, at least, in the form of early Jim Henson creations King Ploobis and Vazh. Because much like one of Kermit and co’s capers, it’s all about putting on a show, and how much stress, anxiety and arm-flapping goes into playing music and lighting lights. At the centre of Jason Reitman’s movie, essentially playing the role of the frog, is the cardigan-wearing Lorne Michaels (Gabriel Labelle), young Canadian TV producer and wannabe revolutionary of the medium. He’s the sensible one. Around him swirls chaos, in many forms. There’s even an Animal stand-in, in the burly shape of John Belushi (Matt Wood), cocaine appreciator and walking tornado.

This is, however, far from family viewing. NBC’s sketch-comedy series Saturday Night Live (known...

David Lynch's Final Onscreen Performance Couldn't Have Been More Perfect
Image
David Lynch is gone, and I'm not handling it well. Lynch was the very definition of a singular artist — there will never be anyone else like him. For over 50 years, Lynch was a filmmaker who almost never compromised, making unique, challenging, mind-blowing art on his own terms. We were immensely lucky to have him, and we are worse off without him. Perhaps we all should've known this was coming — death eventually comes for us all, and last year, word broke that Lynch's health had deteriorated due to emphysema (a fact Lynch confirmed on Twitter/X). And yet, a world without David Lynch feels almost cosmically wrong. I'm sure I wasn't alone in thinking that despite poor health, Lynch would somehow keep on going, and somehow make another movie or TV show again. Just one more.

In addition to his unique directing career, Lynch would sometimes act. Not only did appear...

Acclaimed filmmaker Steven Spielberg opens up about the loss of David Lynch.

Per Variety, Spielberg joined the numerous Hollywood icons who have publicly mourned the tragic death of David Lynch. "I loved David’s films," Spielberg stated. "Blue Velvet, Mulholland Drive and Elephant Man defined him as a singular, visionary dreamer who directed films that felt handmade,” Spielberg said in a statement. “I got to know David when he played John Ford in The Fabelmans. Here was one of my heroes—David Lynch playing one of my heroes. It was surreal and seemed like a scene out of one of David’s own movies. The world is going to miss such an original and unique voice. David Lynch’s Cameo as John Ford Is the Cherry on Top of 'The Fabelmans'
Image
It doesn't take long to recognize The Fabelmans as an autobiographical film about director Steven Spielberg's upbringing. Although the young protagonist's name is Sammy Fabelman (Gabriel Labelle), his love for cinema and certain events reveal him as a clear stand-in for the filmmaker. As it is with all movies based on real events, though, it can sometimes be difficult to tell which parts of The Fabelmans are true, and which are embellished for the sake of narrative. Usually, polished dialogue and details are giveaways, as they can elevate a mundane instance to something filled with emotion, humor, or consequence. Oddly, though, in The Fabelmans, one of the most seemingly scripted scenes in the entire movie is actually taken nearly word-for-word from reality. It is the final scene in the film, and it serves as a cherry on top of this cinematic celebration.

'SNL' Celebrates 50th Anniversary With "More Cowbell" Documentary Episode
Image
Over its 50-year history, Saturday Night Live (SNL) has dominated pop culture with some hilarious breakout sketches. Skits like "Porn Teacher" (with Amy Schumer), "Black Jeopardy with Tom Hanks," the controversial "Harry Potter: Hermione Growth Spurt" (with Lindsay Lohan), and Adam Driver's amazing "Star Wars Undercover Boss: Starkiller Base" are all fan favorites. However, if there's one skit that has gotten stuck in fans' heads more than any other, it has to be the infamous "More Cowbell" skit featuring Will Ferrell and Christopher Walken. A new docuseries, titled SNL 50: Beyond Saturday Night, is looking at the show's long history, with an entire episode dedicated to the beloved sketch.

The skit makes fun of Blue Öyster Cult's hit song "Don't Fear the Reaper," or, to be more specific, the incessant amount of cowbell present in the track. "This is beyond my wildest dreams that you’re making a documentary about the cowbell sketch,...

Saturday Night Live | Four part documentary to kick off 50th anniversary celebrations
Saturday Night Live (1975)
Iconic American comedy show Saturday Night Live turns 50 this year, kicking off the celebrations is a four part documentary.

It’s no exaggeration to say that Saturday Night Live is responsible for launching the careers of a huge amount of American comedy talent, from the early days with Gilda Radner, Chevy Chase, John Belushi, and Bill Murray, through eras with the much missed Phil Hartman, Adam Sandler, Chris Farley, Mike Myers, Molly Shannon, Will Ferrell, Tina Fey, Amy Poehler, Maya Rudolph, Kristen Wiig and many, many more.

Emilia Pérez went into the 82nd Annual Golden Globes with the most film nominations (10), and The Bear topped the television side with five nominations. When the sometimes cringe-worthy, occasionally funny (Nikki Glaser killed it), and mostly uncomfortable ceremony was over, Emilia Pérez emerged as the top film winner while Shōgun was the most-awarded television series.

The Golden Globes voters spread the wins around, with films including The Brutalist, Conclave, A Real Pain, A Different Man, The Substance, I’m Still Here, and Flow going home with trophies. Television wins went to Baby Reindeer, Hacks, The Bear, The Penguin, and True Detective: Night Country.

The 2025 Golden Globes aired live on CBS on Sunday, January 5th.

Full 2025 Golden Globes Winners List: ‘Emilia Pérez,’ ‘The Brutalist,’ and ‘Shōgun’ Dominate
Image
The 82nd Golden Globe Awards have wrapped and the complete 2025 Golden Globes winners list has been revealed. We now know just how much momentum the leading films have going into the rest of Oscar season, what to keep an eye on over the summer in the lead-up to the Emmys, and that host Nikki Glaser may well become one of Hollywood’s go-to emcees.

“Emilia Pérez,” Jacques Audiard’s Mexico-set Netflix musical, won the most prizes of any film with four: Best Motion Picture — Musical or Comedy, Best Non-English Language Film, Best Supporting Actress for Zoe Saldaña, and Best Original Song “El Mal.” There’s still a full two months of awards season left, but the stage sure seems set for “Emilia Pérez” to be going head to head with “The Brutalist” for Best Picture at the Oscars. Brady Corbet’s multi-hour immigrant drama won the Golden Globe for Best Motion Picture — Drama,...

‘Emilia Pérez,’ ‘The Brutalist,’ ‘Shōgun’ top 2025 Golden Globes: Complete list of winners
Image
The 2025 Golden Globes shook things up on Sunday night.

The ceremony, hosted by roaster extraordinaire Nikki Glaser (nimbly righting the ship after last year’s Jo Koy-helmed debacle), featured showdowns of epic proportions with heavyweights like The Brutalist and Conclave competing in dramatic film categories, while Emilia Pérez, Anora, and Wicked squared off in the musical/comedy slate.

When the dust settled, Emilia Pérez, which came into the evening with a record 10 nominations, led the way among films with four awards: Best Comedy/Musical, best non-English Film, supporting actress Zoe Saldaña, and Best Song (“El Mal”). The Brutalist tallied three awards: Best Drama, director Brady Corbet, and lead actor Adrien Brody. As expected, Kieran Culkin (A Real Pain) received the supporting actor trophy, and Wicked won for cinematic and box-office achievement.

But without a clear Oppenheimer-esque favorite, things got interesting. Demi Moore brought down the house after her surprise...

The Golden Globes: Here Are All the Winners!
Image
And the Golden Globes are a wrap. Overall, it was a fast-paced show, with Emilia Pérez, Shogun, Hacks and The Brutalist the night’s big winners. There were some nice surprises, with Sebastian Stan getting an unexpected nod for A Different Man and Demi Moore winning for The Substance. Otherwise, efficiency was the philosophy of the night, although outside of Vin Diesel’s pointed “Hey Dwayne,” there weren’t many memorable moments, with host Nikki Glaser’s opening monologue playing fairly safe outside of one zinger aimed at Ben Affleck that got some decent laughs. After host Jo Koy got into some hot water for a few very mild jokes last year, Glaser avoided anything too controversial. Political jokes were kept to a minimum (outside of a mild dig at Rfk Jr), with even P Diddy only getting the mildest treatment. If anyone was expecting a repeat of her Roast of Tom Brady jokes,...

Sebastian Stan Wins Golden Globe for ‘A Different Man’: ‘Our Ignorance and Discomfort Around Disability and Disfigurement Has to End Now’
Image
Sebastian Stan has won his first Golden Globe, taking home the trophy for best actor in a musical or comedy for “A Different Man.”

In his speech, Stan implored viewers to account for social prejudices toward individuals with disabilities. In director Aaron Schimberg’s “A Different Man,” Stan plays Edward, an aspiring actor with neurofibromatosis, a genetic condition that causes tumors to grow on the skin and bone. He stars in the film alongside a standout Adam Pearson, who has neurofibromatosis in real life.

“Aaron Schimberg and Adam Pearson at home, I wish you were here. I share this with you. Thank you for your trust,” Stan began in his acceptance speech. “Our ignorance and discomfort around disability and disfigurement has to end now. We have to normalize it and continue to expose ourselves [and our children] to it. Encourage acceptance. One way we can do that is by continuing to champion stories that are inclusive.

2025 Golden Globes winner predictions: Official odds for ‘Anora,’ ‘The Brutalist,’ ‘Emilia Pérez,’ and all nominees (update)
Image
Update Jan. 5, 2025, at 11:15 a.m. Pt: There’s been a last-minute shift in the Best Song category, with Emilia Pérez (“El Mal”) taking the No. 1 position from The Wild Robot (“Kiss the Sky”). That would tie Emilia Pérez with Anora, though the film would still be one behind The Brutalist, which is predicted to lead with four Golden Globes.

Original Story Published Jan. 2, 2025, at 2 p.m. Pt:

The final odds are in for Hollywood’s biggest party of the year.

Jason Statham in The Beekeeper (2024)
Gazettley’s 10 Best Underrated Movies of 2024
Jason Statham in The Beekeeper (2024)
High-budget blockbusters and franchise sequels dominated the cinematic scene in 2024, bringing in most of the money and attention from moviegoers. During this popular trend, several truly exceptional films came to light, each with its unique story, captivating performances, and deep exploration of its themes.

Despite their artistic merits, these films did not receive the widespread recognition they earned because more popular films frequently overshadowed them. This article aims to highlight the top 10 underrated movies of 2024 and honor the creative works that made the year’s filmography so diverse.

10. “The Beekeeper”

“The Beekeeper,” directed by David Ayer, is a 2024 action thriller that stars Jason Statham as Adam Clay, a retired secret agent from a group called “Beekeepers.” The narrative is set in motion when Clay’s kind-hearted landlady falls victim to a phishing scam, leading to her tragic death. 10 Most Underrated Movies Of 2024 That You Need To See
Image
2024 was a great year for movies, with blockbusters and critical darlings galore, but even then, there were a number of films that went under the radar last year, despite being some of the best movies of the year. Countless successful movies were released in 2024, but there are a special few that likely stuck out in audiences' minds. Some include Wicked, Gladiator II, Challengers, Dune: Part Two, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, and more. Of course, these movies deserve all the praise, yet a vast array of hidden gems also premiered in 2024, and they deserve way more attention.

A 2024 movie that is considered underrated is one that was very well-received, and deserves a place among the best movies of the year, but got little recognition in the mainstream. Oftentimes, these are smaller, indie movies that did not benefit from massive budgets or incredible casts. They probably lacked solid marketing as well. Despite having engaging premises and strong reputations,...

‘Saturday Night’ Director Jason Reitman Says Chevy Chase Told Him He “Should Be Embarrassed” About Film
Image
Saturday Night filmmaker Jason Reitman received quite a critical review for his film from one of the original SNL castmembers.

During a recent episode of the Fly on the Wall podcast, the director revealed Chevy Chase’s reaction to the movie, prefacing, “Chevy loves to say the thing you’re not supposed to say.” The film follows the chaotic 90 minutes leading up to the first broadcast of SNL in 1975.

“So, Chevy comes in to watch the movie, and he is there with [wife] Jayni and they watch the film, and he’s in the group, and he comes up to me after and he pats me on the shoulder and goes, ‘Well, you should be embarrassed,’” Reitman recalled to hosts David Spade and Dana Carvey.

As everyone bursts out in laughter, Spade said, “You couldn’t even write it better.” Carvey added that Chase “knows that’s funny, like that’s...

“You Should Be Embarrassed”: Chevy Chase Told Saturday Night Director His Very Blunt Review Of The SNL Movie
Image
Despite garnering strong reviews from critics and audiences alike, Jason Reitman says Chevy Chase was not too fond of Saturday Night. Co-written and directed by Reitman, the movie served as a biopic for the long-running sketch show, being set on the night of the show's premiere and the chaos that ensued in trying to get the show on the air. Chase was portrayed in the Saturday Night cast by Gotham alum Cory Michael Smith, with some of the other ensemble including Gabriel Labelle as Lorne Michaels, Rachel Sennott as Rosie Shuster, Dylan O'Brien as Dan Aykroyd and Matt Wood as John Belushi.

As the movie makes its way through the awards circuit press tour, Reitman made an appearance on David Spade and Dana Carvey's Fly on the Wall podcast to discuss Saturday Night. In looking back on the responses to the movie and the way he depicted some of...

Chevy Chase Told Director Jason Reitman He ‘Should Be Embarrassed’ By ‘Saturday Night’: ‘I’m Getting My Own Chevy Chase Moment’
Image
Director Jason Reitman received a less than glowing review of “Saturday Night” from “SNL” legend Chevy Chase.

While speaking on the “Fly on the Wall” podcast, hosted by former “SNL” cast members David Spade and Dana Carvey, Reitman recalled Chase’s brash reaction to the film.

“So, Chevy comes in to watch the movie,” Reitman said. “And he is there with [his wife] Jayni and they watch the film, and he’s in the group, and he comes up to me after and he pats me on the shoulder and goes, ‘Well, you should be embarrassed.’”

Spade said Chase’s reaction was “an exact Chevy thing” to say, adding that “you couldn’t even write [the moment] better.” Carvey speculated that Chase, in part, tried to embarrass Reitman because he “knows that’s funny, like that’s the roughest thing you could say to a director in the moment, or right up there.”

“I’m trying to balance it,...
