Exclusive: Sam Rechner (The Fabelmans) is the latest addition to Paramount and Spyglass Media Group’s Scream 7, Deadline has learned.
No word on the character he’s playing. As previously announced, Neve Campbell is set to reprise her scream queen role as Sidney Prescott, alongside other up-and-comers including Isabel May, Celeste O’Connor, Asa Germann, and Mckenna Grace. As of now, the slasher’s logline also remains under wraps, and we know only that May has been tapped to play Sidney’s daughter.
The film is the latest for the meta horror franchise on the heels of Scream VI, which brought in a franchise-high domestic gross exceeding $108 million in March 2023. Collectively, films in the series have earned more than $900 million in worldwide box office receipts.
Kevin Williamson, architect of the Scream franchise who scripted the original Wes Craven film, will direct from a script by Guy Busick. Also aboard, following...

In "Heretic," Hugh Grant does something brand new as an actor — which is pretty shocking when you consider that the guy's been a major movie star since the 1990s — and takes on a role that uses his sheepish British charm in the scariest way possible. Namely, he plays the "bad guy" (so to speak) in "Heretic," a new horror thriller from Scott Beck and Bryan Woods where two Mormon missionaries, Sister Barnes and Sister Paxton stumble upon the home of a recluse named Mr. Reed (Grant). Mr. Reed invites the two girls into his home, but before long, they realize he may not be receptive to their invitation into the Mormon faith, and the situation is actually much worse than Mr. Reed just being an unwilling participant; they're actively in danger in his house.
If you missed "Heretic" during its theatrical run — or, like me, you were too much of...

The confetti has hardly settled on last night's British Independent Film Awards, but — never an organisation to be knowingly upstaged — the Hollywood Foreign Press today unveiled the nominees for the 2025 Golden Globes. And while the GGs (as nobody calls them) may have lost some of their shine in recent years, the noms can be a decent bellwether for the Oscars and BAFTAs yet to come. With that being said, this year the pack is being led by Jacques Audiard's trans coming-of-age drama-cum-musical gangland thriller Emilia Pérez (10 nominations), Brady Corbet's monumental deconstruction of the American Dream The Brutalist (7 nominations), and Edward Berger's papal conspiracy thriller Conclave (6 nominations).
All three of the above are up for top honours including Best Motion Picture — Drama (and Comedy/Musical for Emilia Pérez) and Best Director, sharing space with the likes of A Complete Unknown, Dune: Part Two, Challengers, Wicked, Anora, and The Substance...

The nominations for the 2025 Golden Globe Awards are out, and they are interesting if you're into that kind of thing. On the film side of things, Netflix and A24 were the big winners with 13 and 12 nominations respectively. Netflix also clinched the most TV nominations with 23, well ahead of second best finisher HBO/Max, which had nine total nominations.
The musical crime comedy Emilia Pérez got the most nominations of any movie with 10, ahead of The Brutalist with seven and Conclave with six. Congrats to those movies, although you may have noticed that none of them were particularly huge hits. Tentpole movies like Wicked, Gladiator II and Dune: Part Two got only eight nominations between them. Dune: Part Two star Josh Brolin said he would quit acting if director Denis Villeneuve didn't get a nomination for helming the film. Well, we at least know he hasn't gotten a Golden Globe nomination for directing the film,...

The 2025 Golden Globes ceremony is set to be hosted by Nikki Glaser and will air live on CBS (and the Paramount+ streaming service) on Sunday, January 5th at 8pm Eastern – and this morning, the full list of nominations has been announced, letting us know who we’ll be seeing in the competition next month. While there has been a lot of talk about Anora being the favorite for Best Picture and other categories at the Academy Awards this year, and the film did earn several major Golden Globe nominations, it did not earn the most nominations in the film categories. That honor goes to Emilia Pérez – and it’s interesting that one of the first news articles I read this morning dealt with the fact that Selena Gomez had to speak up after Eugenio Derbez criticized her performance and her Spanish in the film (Gomez took six months of Spanish...

The 2025 Golden Globe nominations have been announced, and all eyes are on this major milestone in the evolving awards season. Jon M. Chu’s musical blockbuster “Wicked” seemed to be the kind of juggernaut the Globes have historically liked to honor — but remember, in 2023 the Hollywood Foreign Press Association disbanded, following Penske Media Eldridge’s purchase of the Globes, and an increase in voting membership improved the diversity of the body selecting the awards. (Penske Media Corporation also owns IndieWire.)
And indeed, “Wicked” only got four nominations when all was said and done. The most noms received by a film were 10 for Best Motion Picture Musical or Comedy nominee “Emilia Pérez,” Jacques Audiard’s musical starring Karla Sofia Gascon, Selena Gomez, and Zoe Saldana. “The Brutalist” also scored big with seven nominations, including for Best Motion Picture Drama, and actors Felicity Jones, Guy Pearce, and Adrien Brody.

Deadline’s Read the Screenplay series that shines a spotlight on the scripts for this year’s buzziest films is now pointing the viewfinder on Saturday Night, the Jason Reitman-directed film that tells the origin story of NBC’s venerable late-night franchise by focusing on the 90 minutes leading up to its TV debut.
The flick written by Reitman and Gil Kenan takes place on October 11, 1975, when an ambitious troupe of young comedians and writers would go on to change television forever. When director Jason Reitman and casting director John Papsidera put together the large ensemble cast for “Saturday Night,” Reitman’s film about the first-ever episode of the legendary sketch comedy series “Saturday Night Live,” they ran into one spot of trouble. “Dan Aykroyd was almost impossible,” Reitman told Entertainment Weekly of the casting process.
But when Dylan O’Brien auditioned, the part just clicked into place. “That was a big moment,” the filmmaker said, noting that O’Brien was the last of seven actors cast to play the Not Ready for Primetime Players from that first season of “Saturday Night Live.”

O’Brien didn’t know any of this at the time. As far as he was concerned, “Saturday Night” seemed like a project he wouldn’t book anyway, and so the “Teen Wolf” and “The Maze Runner” actor didn’t even bother to send in...

In taking on the role of Gilda Radner in Jason Reitman’s film Saturday Night, British actress Ella Hunt was stepping into the shoes of a beloved U.S. treasure and a Saturday Night Live-verse she herself had not grown up with. In Saturday Night, Reitman details the hours approaching the very first broadcast of SNL—resulting in a fast-paced, comedic romp in which chaos reigns. For Hunt, it was not only a case of working through the character development with no long-held cultural connection to Radner, but also of honoring her in a way that resonated with all the SNL viewers who’ve loved her for so long.
Deadline: As a Brit, what was your feeling going into the role of Gilda Radner?
Ella Hunt: Honestly, for me, approaching this movie or when I got sent the audition, part of my initial hesitancy was, I can’t...

In Jason Reitman’s “Saturday Night,” we meet the original Not Ready for Prime Time Players mere minutes before they revolutionize comedy — and television itself — with their live, late-night NBC variety show dreamed up by an inscrutable Canadian named Lorne Michaels. Buzzing with nervous energy, the film tick-tocks through the chaotic final 90 minutes before the first episode of “Saturday Night Live” (which at that point didn’t have the “Live” in its title) hits the air on October 11, 1975.
We see John Belushi (Matt Wood) and Gilda Radner (Ella Hunt) narrowly miss getting crushed by a falling studio light; Dan Aykroyd (Dylan O’Brien) flirt shamelessly with Laraine Newman (Emily Fairn); Jane Curtin (Kim Matula) and Garrett Morris bond over feeling sidelined; and Chevy Chase (Cory Michael Smith) announce himself by falling over a trash can and boasting about his manhood. Adding to the mayhem are a beleaguered Jim Henson and an...

"Saturday Night" is an ambitious, stressful film about the 90 minutes leading up to the first-ever episode of "Saturday Night Live." It's been criticized a bit by "SNL" superfans for being slightly inaccurate in some places, but that's forgivable considering that director Jason Reitman was hoping to make a compelling film first, an accurate film second. Certain personalities and conflicts had to be exaggerated for the sake of a more compelling story.
Case in point: Gabriel Labelle was amazing in the role of a young Lorne Michaels, who's trying to keep the production from falling apart despite the growing suspicion that this show is doomed to fail. Labelle gives a great performance, but he doesn't give a pitch-perfect impression of what the young "SNL" creator/showrunner was truly like. This, it turns out, was by design.
"I wanted to meet everyone and interview everyone," Labelle explained in a recent interview with Jimmy Fallon.

“Glen Powell delivers one hell of a performance.”
That is the headline of Connor Jameson’s (The First Picture House) review for Netflix’s “Hit Man,” the critically acclaimed comedy directed by Richard Linklater. In the film, Powell plays Gary Johnson, a professor moonlighting as a hit man for his city police department, descending into dangerous, dubious territory. Gary adopts numerous personas throughout the film, and that is what provides Powell with the opportunity to shine. The actor not only rises to the occasion as a leading man, but makes the movie work with his “entrancing” performance.
With raves like that (and the movie’s 95% freshness rating on Rotten Tomatoes), it’s no wonder that Powell is leading Gold Derby’s odds to take home the Golden Globe for Best Film Comedy/Musical Actor.

In the far corner, we can see the elevator shaft shown in the film, right next to the stage on which Billy Preston and his band perform. The massive lighting grids were used to create a ceiling of the two-story studio that was built. The vintage lights, called Mole-Richardson, are no longer in use because they’re not LED, and had to be sourced from all over the country.
Ticking Clock
In the film, Lorne Michaels (played by Gabriel Labelle) has the idea to use real bricks on the stage, laid with real concrete, to give the set that classic New York street-corner feel. One catch: He makes that decision 90 minutes before the show goes live. This becomes a storytelling device: As the bricks multiply, the time to air shrinks. If you’re interested in American comedy, you must have heard of SNL at some point in your life. Launched in 1975, this NBC sketch comedy show became a cultural touchstone, crafted by baby boomers and adored by Gen X and millennials throughout their formative years. Now, five decades after its inception, people understand its influence on the American comedy. While the SNL sketches impacted other forms of comedy like movies and sitcoms for decades, it is now borrowing its style of humor from other formats to satisfy another generation of viewers. Be that as it may, it is fascinating to learn about its foundation through Jason Reitman’s exhilarating “Saturday Night” (2024). While calling it a formative moment in American comedy will be reductive considering the history of this form, it is certainly a milestone that shaped generations of comedic minds to come. Find the film’s ending explained here.

Live, from New York, it's Saturday night! Actually, Jason Reitman's outstanding film "Saturday Night" is about to be anything but live, and audiences will be able to watch it whenever they want to -- whether it's Saturday or not.
"Saturday Night" takes us back to October 1975, providing an anxiety-inducing glimpse into the fervent 90 minutes leading up to the premiere of the first episode of "Saturday Night Live." Of course, it wasn't called "SNL" just yet, as another program still had that moniker, but the series would quickly become a historical moment for television, creating a late night comedy institution that will soon be celebrating its 50th anniversary. And it's all thanks to Lorne Michaels (played in the film by "The Fabelmans" star Gabriel Labelle) and his counterculture comedy cast of the Not Ready for Primetime Players, brought to life magnificently by an outstanding ensemble cast.

It’s hard to imagine many characters this year having a better introduction than Chevy Chase in Jason Reitman’s “Saturday Night.” In the film about the first-ever “Saturday Night Live” episode on October 11, 1975, Chase all but flies onto the screen. He stumbles over a garbage can and falls flat on his face, a move that recalls one of Chase’s signature pratfalls. “Sorry, I tripped over my penis,” Chase says after getting up – a perfect button to the scene, a punchline that underscores his confidence and attitude in those early days of his career.
“I was doing pratfalls around the apartment all the time. So I felt really prepared when I went to the audition,” Chase actor Cory Michael Smith tells Gold Derby. “One of the first things I did in the room was trip over a chair for Jason, which he was very concerned about, but it worked.

“Saturday Night” is a ticking clock film like few in recent memory. The new movie, directed and co-written by Jason Reitman, is about the first-ever broadcast of “Saturday Night Live” on October 11, 1975, and the story unfolds in real-time during the 90 minutes before showtime.
“Jason described it really well: You’re balancing truth and myth. But the main takeaway that you want is the feeling of what it might have felt like that night,” co-editor Shane Reid tells Gold Derby about the film. “So the constraints of time are something that we’re conscious of and using, but we’re not allowing it to dictate the way that you want to feel in the film.”

“Saturday Night Live” creator and producer Lorne Michaels is speaking out on his recent show regrets.
The NBC Universal mega-producer told The Wall Street Journal that he was “angry” that NBC executives opted to fire comedian Shane Gillis from “Saturday Night Live” in 2019. Gillis was announced as a cast member but never appeared on the series; he was let go after his racially-insensitive comments about Asian people that he made on a podcast were resurfaced. He used the slur “ch*nks” saying, “Chinatown’s f*cking nuts. Let the f*cking ch*nks live there.”
The now-deleted video from 2018 was from his podcast “Matt and Shane’s Secret Podcast.” The video was recirculated right as “SNL” announced Bowen Yang was to become the first Asian-American cast member. Gillis later made his hosting debut in February 2024 during Season 49.

Jason Reitman’s “Saturday Night” has hit theaters nationwide, chronicling the chaotic 90 minutes leading up to the first broadcast of “Saturday Night Live” in 1975, releasing on the 49th anniversary of the long-running sketch comedy on October 11. With this movie expected to be a contender at the upcoming 2025 Academy Awards, let’s take a closer look at the filmmaker’s previous four Oscar nominations in three different categories for just two of his films.

Longtime friends and collaborators, Jason Reitman and Gil Kenan, reunite once more in this new biopic, charting the explosive birth of the iconic Saturday Night Live comedy program on the US TV network NBC.
Set in the frantic 90 minutes before the show’s inaugural episode aired, Saturday Night expertly captures the unpredictable, high-stakes nature of live television, weaving in biting humour, personal conflicts, and the birth of a cultural phenomenon.
Reitman and Kenan’s script balances tension and comedy, paying homage to the anarchic energy of SNL’s origins while offering insight into the fragile egos, narcotic excesses and volatile personalities that shaped its creation.
The film opens on October 11, 1975, with a visibly stressed Lorne Michaels, portrayed with nuance and gravitas by The Fabelmans star Gabriel Labelle, entering NBC’s 30 Rockefeller Plaza in preparation for the first show. Outside he is greeted by a stressed out NBC page (Stanger Things...

Saturday Night star Gabriel Labelle never imagined he’d become a specialist in playing titans of the entertainment industry.
In Steven Spielberg’s semi-autobiographical drama The Fabelmans (2022), the Canadian actor played Spielberg’s teenage surrogate character, Sammy Fabelman, whose emerging filmmaking prowess intersected with his family’s divorce. To capture the essence of an adolescent Spielberg in the ‘60s, Labelle had every possible resource at his disposal, as the Oscar-winning filmmaker opened up his family’s vault in more ways than one.
When The Fabelmans debuted in London at the start of 2023, Jason Reitman ventured over to the premiere event after spending a day on the set of Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire. Impressed by Labelle’s performance, Reitman initiated a get-together the following day, and some time spent together that included coffee and a showing of the American Psycho musical, the Canadian American filmmaker knew he’d found his Lorne Michaels for Saturday Night.

Impressed by Labelle’s performance, Reitman initiated a get-together the following day, and some time spent together that included coffee and a showing of the American Psycho musical, the Canadian American filmmaker knew he’d found his Lorne Michaels for Saturday Night.

Editors Nathan Orloff and Shane Reed were given a new kind of experimental freedom on “Saturday Night,” Jason Reitman’s behind-the-scenes re-enactment of how NBC’s revolutionary late-night sketch comedy show made its live debut on October 11, 1975.
By following anxious producer Lorne Michaels (Gabriel Labelle) as he guides his cast and crew through rehearsals, the editing duo (who previously cut Reitman’s “Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire”) essentially make audiences into a fly on the wall during the make or break 90-minute lead up to showtime. Making it all the more interesting, of course, is that the soon-to-be-legendary, “Not Ready for Prime Time Players,” consists of Dan Aykroyd (Dylan O’Brien), John Belushi (Matt Wood), Chevy Chase (Cory Michael Smith), Jane Curtin (Kim Matula), Garrett Morris (Lamorne Morris), Laraine Newman (Emily Fairn), and Gilda Radner (Ella Hunt).
“It was really about the availability of bandwidth,” Reed told IndieWire. “Nathan was on set and I was cutting from L.

Cory Michael Smith had some big shoes to fill with his latest role.
The Saturday Night actor recently opened up about the “terror” of mastering his portrayal of Chevy Chase and his “very compulsive” process to prepare for the film, which premiered Friday on the 49th anniversary of Saturday Night Live‘s debut.
“I have loved Chevy Chase since I was a kid. He’s one of my favorite comedic actors,” he told People. “It was such an honor that I did not want to mess this up, and I didn’t want to mess my career up. So I really dove in, and for about two months I would only let myself watch Chevy Chase.
“I just was like, I have to know how this man would say every line, what his body and face would be doing instinctually and sort of deprogram myself and my instincts from this,...

Despite being born and spending much of my life on the other side of the Atlantic, I’ve always been a fan of Saturday Night Live. The live format, which not only allows for constant improvisation but also for countless memorable moments of actors breaking character, is immensely appealing, as is the show’s structure – a collection of distinct sketches with musical performances. So naturally, a film based on the pilot episode, specifically the 90 minutes leading up to the broadcast, caught my attention.
Saturday Night is the title of the movie and was also the name of the original show due to a conflict with another late-night program, Saturday Night Live with Howard Cosell. After that show was canceled, SNL adopted the title it’s known by today, becoming a cultural phenomenon that, despite having its greatest impact in its home country, still crossed borders and reached audiences everywhere. Naturally,...

“Saturday Night” hit theaters everywhere on Friday, taking fans back to the very beginning of one of NBC’s most famous shows. But, is it a true story?
Directed by Jason Reitman, the film tells the story of the 90 minutes leading up to the very first episode of “Saturday Night Live.” It’s total chaos, with the crew openly revolting against producer Lorne Michaels (Gabriel Labelle), the content of the show itself still being nailed down, and studio execs simply counting on it to fail.
A lot of the film is rooted in reality, but, like many true stories put on screen, there is some fictionalizing that happens.
Let’s break it down what’s fact and what’s fiction in the “SNL” movie.
Is “Saturday Night” based on a true story?
On the whole, yes. Reitman talked to many, many people involved with the debut of “SNL” to get...

“Cracking a Head to applaud Jason Reitman’s triumphant SNL film. Wow!” Aykroyd wrote after watching the movie at his local theater. “What a propulsive, engaging, funny, beautifully cast and acted, suspenseful, adventurous, music-filled ride. A perfect window into the creative process at its highest level. Pretty accurate too.”
