Exclusive: Spenser Granese (Dope Thief) is the newest addition to the cast of Marty Supreme, director Josh Safdie’s new film for A24, starring Timothée Chalamet, sources tell Deadline.
Character details are under wraps, as with the film’s plot, though the project supposedly takes loose inspiration from the story of professional ping pong player Marty Reisman. Sources close to the production have stressed, at the same time, that it’s a fictionalized original, rather than a biopic.
Pic’s eclectic ensemble also includes Gwyneth Paltrow, musician Tyler, The Creator, Odessa A’zion, magician Penn Jillette, Shark Tank panelist and entrepreneur Kevin O’Leary (aka Mr. Wonderful), Fran Drescher, Sandra Bernhard, and filmmaker Abel Ferrara.
Production is currently underway, with Safdie working from his script written with Ronald Bronstein. The duo produces alongside Eli Bush, Anthony Katagas, Chalamet and A24.

Exclusive: A24’s Timothée Chalamet movie Marty Supreme, about ping-pong prodigy Marty Reisman, is one of the few blue-chip movies on offer at this week’s American Film Market in Las Vegas. It’s also shaping up to be the most expensive.
Word from buyers this past week has been that the movie — which is filming in New York — comes with an eyebrow raising $90M budget. We hear that’s exaggerated, however, and that $70M gross is more accurate.
That still makes the project the most expensive new package on sale at this year’s AFM and makes it A24’s joint most-expensive production to date alongside Dwayne Johnson starrer The Smashing Machine, which is in post-production (and is another ‘sports biopic’ that doesn’t obviously scream big-budget). Both movies are directed by a Safdie brother: Marty Supreme by Josh, and Smashing Machine by Benny. Both previously teamed on A...

Timothée Chalamet surprised fans at his own look-alike contest in New York City on Sunday, where the rowdy event resulted in at least one arrest.
Chalamet posed for photos with several of his doppelgängers present at the event — many of whom were dressed as the actor’s most famous characters, including Willy Wonka and Dune‘s Paul Atreides. The Associated Press reported general chaos surrounding the event, where Chalamet was flanked by body guards and some fans seemed to mistake look-alikes for the real actor.
The contest had been previously advertised on flyers around New York and was one of several doppelgängers events hosted by YouTuber Anthony Po, with a $50 prize for the winner. Look-alikes were interviewed onstage about their plans with Kylie Jenner, Chalamet’s presumed girlfriend, as well as their French proficiency (the Little Women actor is bilingual). Miles Mitchell, a look-alike dressed as Willy Wonka, eventually took first place.

Timothée Chalamet was in good company during a visit with fans this weekend, where he was more than likely asked to call them by his name.
On Sunday, the Oscar nominee made a surprise appearance at New York City’s Madison Square Park, where hundreds of fans gathered to compete in a Timothée Chalamet lookalike contest.
In videos shared to social media, several doppelgängers posed for photos in the sea of people before the Dune star joined them, resulting in some genuinely shocked faces. A frenzy broke out as he hugged his admirers and posed with them.
Incidentally, Chalamet didn’t win the contest, arriving with a mustache and a shorter head of hair — after portraying Bob Dylan in A Complete Unknown.
The contest took place after flyers popped up around the city with a Qr link to the event’s Partiful page and the offer of a $50 cash prize.

A new horror movie we're really looking forward to next year is Until Dawn. It's a live-action feature adaptation of the popular 2015 video game of the same name, and it's slated to come out in spring 2025. In fact, Sony's Screen Gems has just set an official theatrical release date for April 25, 2025, so make sure to save the date.
David F. Sandberg directed the Until Dawn movie from a screenplay written by Gary Dauberman. Blair Butler wrote the film's previous draft. Sandberg is best known for directing the hit supernatural horror film Lights Out. He's also known for helming the horror flick Annabelle: Creation and the superhero films Shazam! and Shazam! Fury of the Gods.
Dauberman, on the other hand, previously worked together with Sandberg on Annabelle: Creation. He wrote the screenplay for that film. He also wrote the scripts for the horror movies Annabelle, The Nun and Annabelle Comes Home.

The movie based on the popular horror game Until Dawn has completed principal photography. Director David F. Sandberg shared a post on social media after wrapping up main filming for the movie. Sandberg is known for directing scary movies like Annabelle: Creation.
The Until Dawn movie is being made by Sony Pictures. It has been in development since 2015, when the interactive game first came out. In the game, a group of young people get trapped in a remote mountain lodge. They have to try escaping while being hunted by a mysterious killer. Players could make choices that impacted what happened in the story. This gave fans control over how gory their experience became.
Sandberg’s post on Instagram showed a clapperboard stained with fake blood. The director’s reflection in a mirror covered in fake gore could also be seen. This suggests the film will have the same frightening tone as the game.

Fran Drescher, best known for her role as Fran Fine on “The Nanny” and for her current role as president of SAG-AFTRA, is teaming up with another Queens booster, Josh Safdie. Drescher has signed on to play Timothée Chalamet’s character’s mother in Safdie’s ping-pong drama “Marty Supreme,” Variety reports.
“Marty Supreme,” from A24, follows a table tennis pro in the 1950s. The film is reportedly inspired by the life of influential table tennis champion Marty Reisman, but is fictionalized and not a biopic. Oscar nominee Chalamet stars in the film. He went viral earlier this week when photos of him in a dorky 1950s costume on the film’s New York set hit the internet.

The SAG-AFTRA President will star opposite Timothée Chalamet, Gwyneth Paltrow, Tyler, The Creator, Odessa A’zion, Penn Jillette, Kevin O’Leary a.k.a Mr. Wonderful and Abel Ferrara.
The original screenplay written by Safdie and Ronald Bronstein is based loosely on Marty Reisman’s life, set in the world of 1950s Ping Pong culture. Reisman was known to be unconventional in the sport, yet won two U.S. Men’s Singles Championships in 1958 and 1960 and more than 20 international and national titles. He became famous for mastering the hardbat style, a traditional style of table tennis that uses a racket without a sponge layer to emphasize control and spin over speed and power. His mastery of the sport earned him a reputation as one of table tennis’ last greats of that era.

“The Nanny” star and SAG-AFTRA president Fran Drescher has joined the cast of Josh Safdie’s table tennis movie “Marty Supreme.” She will play the mother of Timothée Chalamet’s character.
Starring alongside Chalamet and Drescher are Gwyneth Paltrow (in her first on-screen movie role since 2019’s “Avengers: Endgame”) and Tyler, the Creator (in his film debut). Odessa A’zion also stars alongside magician Penn Jillette (of Penn & Teller), investor and “Shark Tank” personality Kevin O’Leary (aka Mr. Wonderful) and “Bad Lieutenant” filmmaker Abel Ferrara.
From A24, “Marty Supreme” follows Chalamet as a young ping pong pro. Plot details are scant, but the studio is touting the film as a “fictional work set in the world of 1950s ping pong culture.” Variety broke news of the project, which is currently in production, in July.

Photos from the set of Josh Safdie’s film Marty Supreme dropped on September 30 with Timothée Chalamet, which is filming in New York City.
While details of the film are being kept under wraps, it will be based loosely on Reisman’s life set in the world of 1950s Ping Pong culture. Known for his unconventional style, Reisman won two U.S. Men’s Singles Championships in 1958 and 1960 and more than 20 international and national titles.
The beloved sportsman became famous for mastering the hardbat style, a traditional style of table tennis that uses a racket without a sponge layer to emphasize control and spin over speed and power. His mastery of the sport earned him a reputation as one of table tennis’ last greats of that era.

Odessa A’zion (Fresh Kills) is the newest addition to the cast of Marty Supreme, A24’s new film directed by Josh Safdie.
No word on the role to be played by A’zion. She joins a pretty electic ensemble led by Timothée Chalamet, which will also include Gwyneth Paltrow and musician Tyler, The Creator. Other new additions announced today include magician Penn Jillette, Shark Tank panelist and entrepreneur Kevin O’Leary (a.k.a Mr. Wonderful) and filmmaker Abel Ferrara.
While plot details are being kept under wraps, the pic has been reported as being loosely inspired by pro ping pong player Marty Reisman. At the same time, sources close to the production stress that it’s a fictionalized original, rather than a biopic.

Upcoming horror film adaptation Until Dawn has added a memorable face from the videogame on which it’s based: one Peter Stormare.

The Fresh Kills writer and director recalled the “really painful time” in her life, when the producer had her fired “for no reason” and went on to lie about her on-set behavior, telling others not to work with her.
“He literally had the power and used it to completely end a young girl’s career at 26 years old,” said Esposito on the She Pivots podcast. “This was a notorious, brutal producer, a Harvey Weinstein-esque type person.”
She recalled, “So, he fired me for no reason. He wanted someone else, and he got her. But then, anybody that called and was like, ‘Hey, I want to hire her,’ he’s like, ‘Don’t hire her.’ He said I was a drug addict, locked myself in a trailer — never happened.

It was an Inside Out specialty weekend, fairly quiet and with a stream of indies films and more wide releases. The schedule is starting to recover from a strike-induced slump that, however, provided oxygen to some indies.
Small films have been competing for screens with majors at arthouses from Alamo Drafthouse to Landmark since theaters reopened post-Covid and the more of them there are, the harder it is. It’s nice to see major back and the broader box office on a solid footing. But it would also be nice to see more indie breakouts like Civil War, Late Night With The Devil, Immaculate, Wicked Little Letters, One Life or Love Lies Bleeding.
“June is crowded” with indies now, says one distributor. And theaters “don’t have space to support indies in a meaningful way.”
Others are heartened by recent wide-release blowouts. “It’s still a tough market. But I...
