In the comedy American Dreamer, Peter Dinklage plays a curmudgeonly college professor with a dream to buy a home far beyond his limited means, while Shirley MacLaine plays a wealthy retiree who has just such a fabulous home for sale for an unbelievable price – with one big catch. Loosely inspired – very loosely – by real events, the major delight of this sometimes crazy comedy is in the pairing of Dinklage and MacLaine, who make a perfect, and perfectly insane, comedy duo in this film.
Dinklage plays Dr. Phil Loder who teaches economics from a sociological view at a small college. Loder may teach economics but his own economics are pretty dismal for a professor of the dismal science. Underpaid and twice-divorced, he doesn’t have tenure, and he can’t even seem to get...

The dubious ideology known as the “American dream” might have lost its meaning amid today’s economic conditions, when making rent each month counts as a triumph for most. But in debuting director Paul Dektor’s occasionally amusing yet messy dark comedy, “American Dreamer,” untenured East Coast economics professor Dr. Phil Loder (Peter Dinklage) holds onto its antiquated gist for dear life, indignantly teaching his subject with an idealist pursuit-of-happiness angle and fantasizing about the day he would proudly buy his very own house.
The trouble is, Dr. Phil (a nickname he detests) doesn’t quite have the means for the property of his dreams — not a modestly comfortable condo or anything, but a giant mansion that would set him back a few million dollars. Still, that doesn’t stop him from frequenting open houses at the kinds of homes he definitely can’t afford and sipping champagne among more qualified buyers.

"Do you wish death upon her?" "Not tomorrow..." Vertical has revealed the official trailer for an indie film titled American Dreamer, now set for release in March this year. This film originally premiered at the 2022 Tribeca Film Festival a few years ago, and has been stuck in release limbo ever since. Which is not a good sign. "What do we need to be happy? What do we want? And ultimately - how far are we willing to go, to get it?" Economics professor Phillip Loder poses these questions to his grad students as he ponders these thoughts. Phil is a twice-divorced, frustrated, underpaid professor, as well as an aspiring novelist, clamoring for bigger, better things in his life. He finds a hard-to-believe good deal on a masnion estate and jumps at the offer, hoping he'll strike it rich – only to quickly realize it really is too good to be true.

In conversation with uInterview founder Erik Meers, Letterkenny actors Michelle Mylett and Dylan Playfair reflected on the Canadian show’s final season.
Letterkenny is focused on a rural community in Ontario, where residents are primarily descendants of Irish immigrants who sought refuge from the devastating Great Famine. Cliques exist throughout the community, from Hicks to Skids to Hockey Players. Nearly every episode begins with a textual introduction that sets the stage with, “There are 5000 people in Letterkenny. These are their problems.”
When asked for favorite on and off-screen moments, Mylett shared, “When we did the Mother Hutchins scene around the dining room table… it’s just so deeply unsettling and crass, and we were laughing so hard, and the crew was laughing, it was just one of those ones where you’re like, ‘Oh this might piss some people off but it’s definitely going to make an impact one way or another.

How are you now? It’s the end of an era for the cast of Letterkenny, a beloved Canadian sitcom focusing on the hicks, skids, hockey players, and degens of rural Ontario. Created by Jared Keeso and developed by Keeso and Jacob Tierney, Letterkenny might as well be required viewing for Canadian citizens. For 12 seasons, the cast of Letterkenny have fast-talked their way through an astonishing amount of social commentary, rolled up their sleeves for epic scraps, and delivered many of the best hockey chirps you’ll ever hear. The show is populated by unforgettable characters who, throughout the series, form unlikely friendships with locals who push the boundaries of what it means to be part of a community.

How’r ya now? The long-running Canadian comedy Letterkenny called it quits after 12 seasons, but before they closed the barn doors in December 2023, fans were given a musical parting gift. In the final season’s second episode, the Skids — with help from the Hicks and A.I. — release their own country music video for their engineered song, “Sun Darts.” According to mastermind Stewart (Tyler Johnston), every hit country single has two essential things: a unique hook/song title (“Sun Darts”), and “as much hick s**t as possible.” The result? An over-the-top smorgasbord of fun-loving country iconography. Everyone’s drinking a Puppers Golden Lager (the series’ own light beer). The “toughest guy in Letterkenny” Wayne (played by creator Jared Keeso) and Stewart arm wrestle while the good-looking women of Letterkenny cheer in spaghetti strap tank tops — alongside the Skids, like Roald (Evan Stern), of course. There’s wood chopping, Katy (Michelle Mylett...

"Your family needs you." "My family needs me? What about when I needed you…" An early teaser trailer is out for a film titled Goliath, a Canadian feature that has been in the works for years already. It's finally set to release on VOD starting in February this year, after first premiering in 2019. When Robin Walker returns home for her father's funeral, she's forced to confront the bitter family she left behind, as well as personal demons; resulting in the reveal of an unsettling secret. "Goliath was the ultimate film school," states the first-time director Luke Villemaire. "We took the trial by fire approach that many first-time filmmakers are forced to endure when struggling to break into the industry. It was incredibly tolling, but I was determined to see this project through, and it has ultimately been a rewarding experience." This was originally shot back in 2016 in Quinte West, Ontoario and nearby areas.

Pitter-patter, let's get at 'er, because the Canadian comedy series "Letterkenny" is back for its 11th season. What started out as a YouTube web series called "Letterkenny Problems" has since grown into one of the funniest and most popular shows on TV, following the residents of Letterkenny, a fictional rural town in Ontario based on show creator Jared Keeso's hometown.
The residents of the small community fall under three major groups: the Hicks, the Skids, and the Hockey Players, but all three are ready for a brew, a brawl, or a beaut at any given opportunity. Whether it's chorin', sharing a Puppers with your best bud, or trading fisticuffs, the residents of "Letterkenny" do it faster, tougher, and with snappier wit than anyone else on the planet. With the return of the show just around the corner, here's everything you big shoots need to know to prepare, and more.

Few actors are as effective conveying misanthropy as Peter Dinklage. With his arch line readings and endlessly expressive face, the actor excels at portraying damaged souls possessing an underlying vulnerability. It’s what makes him so perfect for the starring role in the new film scripted by Theodore Melfi (Hidden Figures) in which he plays an embittered economic professor desperately searching for happiness but failing miserably at every turn. American Dreamer, recently showcased as the opening night film of the Fort Lauderdale International Film Festival, is the sort of acerbic black comedy that feels like a throwback to the more cinematically daring 1970s era.

At times, “American Dreamer” brings to mind “American Beauty,” even if we’re three recessions removed from an economy conducive to partying like it’s 1999.
Real estate and homeownership remain intrinsically tied to the American dream and, per the movies, so do improper relationships with much-younger women. Danny Glover, Matt Dillon, Danny Pudi and Michelle Mylett joined the cast of American Dreamer, the Paul Dektor-directed dark comedy that has just gotten underway in Vancouver. The actors join Peter Dinklage, Shirley MacLaine and Kim Quinn on the Ted Melfi scripted film. Dinklage, David Ginsberg, Quinn, Melfi and Dektor are producing along with Flying Firebird.
Pic is told in a similar tone as Melfi’s St. Vincent and is based on a true story segment from the This American Life podcast. The film follows Dr. Phil Loder (Dinklage), a low-level, adjunct professor of economics at Harvard, whose grand dream of owning a home is tragically out of reach…until an incredible, once-in-a-lifetime opportunity comes his way when a lonely, childless, near-death widow (MacLaine) offers Phil her sprawling estate for pennies. But Phil quickly learns the deal is too good to be true.

Thanks to ongoing issues, plenty of people found themselves staying put over the holidays in lieu of traveling back to their hometowns. For me, that meant not battling it out at Lax to grab two flights to get me halfway through the country, only to have to rent a car and drive the last two-and-a-half hours to my hometown. Even without global health concerns, I might not have made it back to my family anyway, thanks to a late-breaking Christmas blizzard that left the area a morass of ice and snow that my skin, thinned by years of California life, never could have withstood.
And yet, thanks to the release of Season 9 of Hulu’s “Letterkenny,” I’m suffering from far less homesickness than one would expect under the circumstances.

"The safety of London is paramount - we can't risk a bug getting into the city." Giant Pictures has released an official trailer for The Complex: Lockdown, a feature film based on the interactive sci-fi thriller full-motion video game The Complex - first released earlier this year. Essentially a feature film tie-in for the video game. After a major bio-weapon attack on London, two scientists debate whether to save a suspected terrorist’s life. However, assassins have infiltrated the building and soon our scientists find themselves with time, and options, running out. The cast includes Michelle Mylett, Kate Dickie, Okorie Chukwu, Kim Adis, Rachel Petladwala, and Al Weaver. In terms of video game movies, this looks awful. In terms of movies in general, this looks like a complete mess. Doesn't even make any sense. Skip this - it's not worth it. Here's the official trailer (+ poster) for Paul Raschid's The Complex: Lockdown,...

It’s your job to help two doctors – who are also ex-lovers – save an infected woman in this zeitgeist-y drama with eight possible endings
This zeitgeist-y interactive science fiction drama posits a timely premise hingeing on isolation. On the London tube, Clare (streaming celebrity Leah Viathan) is infected with a nanotechnology in development. Consequently, she must spend the rest of the movie in a coffin-shaped chamber within a vacuum-sealed laboratory, while Amy (Michelle Mylett) and Rees (Al Weaver), a pair of bickering, frequently irritating doctors – and ex-lovers – try to work out how to save her.
Or not. Because some of the options this game offers take the player down paths with dire consequences for poor Clare, and some don’t work out so well for Amy or Rees. As different choices are made, the game scores the user on various personality dimensions – openness, conscientiousness, extraversion, agreeableness, neuroticism – as if this...

There seems to be endless low budget horror with titles like the one above (and I have watched many!). ‘The Curse of…’ or ‘The Haunting of…’ and it’s always 50/50 on the quality so I generally go in with low expectations.
I will say right off the bat that The Curse of Buckout Road exceeded those expectations. Buckout Road is ‘the most haunted road in America’ and the movie covers some of the myths, legends, ghosts and folklore that apparently haunt the road. There’s plenty on show and I’m sure plenty more if they were needed for a sequel. A group of young people start to think that these myths might...

The eighth annual Atx Television Festival has added panels for “One Day at a Time,” “Veronica Mars,” “Into the Dark: Culture Shock” and “Letterkenny” to its lineup, Variety has learned exclusively.
Additionally, Beau Willimon will return to host his own discussion event and join a panel about playwrights moving to the small screen medium.
Heading down to Austin, Texas for the “One Day at a Time” panel this year will be executive producer Mike Royce and cast members Justina Machado, Isabella Gomez, Todd Grinnell and Stephen Tobolowsky. This marks Machado and Gomez’ second consecutive years with the show at the festival, as the 2017 event also featured a panel discussion for the series. “One Day at a Time,” a reboot of the classic family sitcom of the same name, was produced by Sony Pictures Television and ran for three seasons on Netflix. It was also executive produced by Norman Lear and Gloria Calderon Kellett.

The dialogue on Letterkenny seems impenetrable the first time you watch it, maybe even the second or third. The Canadian comedy, which Hulu recently added to its library, takes place in a small town in rural Ontario populated by “hicks, skids, hockey players and Christians,” and each group has its own colorful vernacular. The hicks – sibling farmers Wayne (creator/star Jared Keeso) and Katy (Michelle Mylett) and their friends Daryl (Nathan Dales) and Squirrely Dan (K. Trevor Wilson) – have been known to talk about “hooverin’ schneef” (snorting cocaine), and when...

Netflix’s latest offering is a true nightmare before Christmas — and that’s a good thing. “El Camino Christmas,” available to stream on Friday, Dec. 8, tells the story of a drifter (played by “Fifty Shades of Grey”‘s Luke Grimes) whose arrival in a sleepy California town sets off a chain of chaotic events, culminating in a fatal hostage situation at a liquor store. As the madness unfolds, countless lives — including those of a single mother (played by Letterkenny’s Michelle Mylett) and her young, introverted son — are changed forever.
In case it wasn’t already clear, this isn’t your typical comedy — and it’s definitely not your typical Christmas movie. The unconventional story, which also stars Dax Shepard and Vincent D’Onofrio as a pair of bumbling cops with absolutely no business wielding pistols, takes pride in bucking conventions at every turn, of which there are many.
