After a three-year hiatus, “We Are Lady Parts” is back with a triumphant second season, filled with brilliant, catchy music, fantastical comedy sequences, and dynamite performances from the entire ensemble. Unlike a lot of contemporary filmmakers who make the jump from movies to TV, creator Nida Manzoor got to return to her roots after debuting a feature between seasons.
Season 2 (certified Fresh) finds Lady Parts — the all-female punk outfit composed of Amina (Anjana Vasan), Saira (Sara Kameela Impey), Aisha (Juliette Motamed), Bisma (Faith Omole), and manager Momtaz (Lucy Shorthouse) — enjoying a successful run of tours and an actual, engaged fan base. With their sights set on recording an album, the band faces financial struggles and a major opportunity that threatens to break them apart.

‘We Are Lady Parts’ Review: Season 2 of Peacock’s Subversive Hit Recaptures the Magic and Deepens It
At a pivotal moment in their careers, Lady Parts find themselves in a heated argument. Frontwoman Saira (Sarah Kameela Impey) wants the group to pivot to more overtly political statements, in contrast to the jokier material that’s been their signature up to now. Her bandmates, meanwhile, are skeptical. They’d be playing “pick an atrocity, any atrocity” to shore up their own cred, one argues. Their existence as an all-female Muslim punk band is inherently political, another suggests. Besides, wouldn’t that jeopardize the success they’ve worked so hard for? Or is that only more reason to speak up?
The group never do reach a definitive decision, and the meeting ends in anger and hurt. But to the extent that a solution to their dilemma exists, they might be living it already. Peacock’s We Are Lady Parts made an immediate impression in 2021 with its refusal to limit itself to any one box.

It’s been a long time since the world has heard from We Are Lady Parts — whether the fictional all-female, all-Muslim U.K. punk band or the delightful Britcom about the group. The series began streaming on Peacock in June 2021, and it was one of the best shows of that year. That fall, a second season was announced, with enthusiastic quotes from the show’s creator/writer/director Nida Manzoor. And then … radio silence. There was no further news about when, or even if, the second season would arrive until earlier this year.

Who said the heroes’ journey can’t take a little detour? In the trailer for “We Are Lady Parts” Season 2, the eponymous female punk band decides to dabble in villainy — to endlessly entertaining results.
Created by “Polite Society” writer and director Nida Manzoor, “We Are Lady Parts” premiered in the U.K. in 2018 and in the U.S. via Peacock in 2021. IndieWire’s Steve Greene wrote at the time that “Each member of the greater Lady Parts quintet could easily handle an episode on their own,” praising a show which is “at its best when it’s breaking free from restraints, too, tossing in a bunch of playful asides and visual diversions.”
“I wanted to go bolder, sillier, darker and deeper and that is exactly what we strived to do,” Manzoor said in a press release accompanying the Season 2 trailer.

Lace up your motorcycle boots and rip off your shirt sleeves: acclaimed sitcom We Are Lady Parts is back for Series 2. Showrunner Nida Manzoor launched her career with Series 1 back in 2021, depicting the exploits of scrappy, all-female Muslim punk band, Lady Parts. Last year, she followed it up with barnstorming action-comedy film Polite Society, for which she won a BIFA for Best Debut Screenwriter. Rocking her way back to the small screen, Manzoor’s Channel 4 hit returns for another run next month, and you can see a selection of first-look images below:

The top honorees at the 2023 Laurence Olivier Awards were plays that focused on cultures outside of London. “My Neighbour Totoro,” which is based on the beloved Japanese film of the same name from Studio Ghibli, won six trophies, the most of the night, including Best New Comedy, Director, and four craft categories. A revival of the American classic “A Streetcar Named Desire” by Tennessee Williams claimed three: Best Play Revival and for lead Paul Mescal and featured player Anjana Vasan. Meanwhile, the British-based “Prima Facie,” which is set to bow on Broadway this month and will thus compete at the Tony Awards, took home two prizes for Best Play and for star Jodie Comer.
The only other productions to win more than one trophy were all musicals. “Standing at the Sky’s Edge” won two of the top prizes: Best Musical and Best Original Score or New Orchestrations. “Tammy Faye,...

Exclusive: Standing at the Sky’s Edge, which won best musical at the Olivier Awards Sunday night, will transfer to the West End’s Gillian Lynne Theatre early in 2024, Deadline can reveal.
The show written by playwright Chris Bush, featuring rock songs from the catalog of Richard Hawley, moves into the Gillian Lynne from February for an initial six-month season.
It won two prizes at Sunday’s ceremony: the all-important best musical honor and original score or new orchestrations for Hawley’s music and lyrics and Tom Deering’s orchestrations.
The story is set in Park Hill, a brutalist apartment block built in the early 1960s, and follows three families who occupy one particular flat at different periods over six decades. Hawley describes it as a “love letter” to his hometown of Sheffield in South Yorkshire.

Two new works based on existing material dominated the nominations for the 2023 Olivier Awards, the top theatre honor in Britain. “My Neighbour Totoro” and “Standing at the Sky’s Edge” lead the play and musical fields with nine and eight bids apiece. The former is a stage adaptation of the Studio Ghibli film of the same name, brought to life in a visually stunning production featuring impressive puppetry by Basil Twist. “Standing at the Sky’s Edge” uses songs from the Richard Hawley album and new material to tell the story of three families in a Sheffield housing complex.
Revivals had strong showings, too. Director Daniel Fish’s remounting of “Rodger & Hammerstein’s Oklahoma!” and the Paul Mescal-led “A Streetcar Named Desire” netted seven and six nominations, respectively. “We Are Lady Parts” centers on an all-female Muslim punk band who are making music their way, building an audience, and balancing their personal life on and off stage.

Peacock and UK’s Channel 4 have renewed the critically acclaimed musical comedy We Are Lady Parts from Nida Manzoor.
The series, inspired by Manzoor’s experiences and from the rich and diverse cultural collectives and artists in London, follows the eponymous Muslim punk band, featuring geeky Ph.D. student and lead guitarist Amina Hussein (Anjana Vasan) and fierce and enigmatic front-woman Saira (Sarah Kameela Impey).
Saira uses Amina’s desperation to find a husband as leverage, offering to hook-up dates for her if she agrees to join the band. Amina has never, ever met girls like this before, and soon gets swept up in their joyful anarchic energy. But she becomes torn and caught up between two different worlds – that of her more strait-laced university friends led by her bestie Noor (Aiysha Hart) and the world of Lady Parts.
Other cast includes Juliette Motamed, Faith Omole, Lucie Shorthouse, and Zaqi Ismail.

Where to Watch ‘We Are Lady Parts’: Peacock
“We Are Lady Parts” is constantly in motion. It’s not the kind of out-of-control frenzy that usually points to a show having no idea what to do to make its central characters compelling. Instead, this Channel 4/Peacock production, written and directed by creator Nida Manzoor, moves at the pace of someone trying to make sense of a world gradually shifting around her.
The show was an immediate highlight of Thursday morning’s Gotham Award nominees, getting recognized in both Breakthrough Series and Outstanding Performance in a New Series. The latter nomination went to Anjana Vasan, who stars as Amina, a PhD microbiology student whose guitar playing skills catch the eye of a local punk band. After a rocky intro and some deep questioning whether she’s cut out for musical rebellion (and vice...

The punk-rocking ladies of Peacock and Channel 4’s We Are Lady Parts came together to talk casting, Muslim representation on-screen and more at Atx Television Festival on Sunday.
Creator Nida Manzoor kicked off the conversation, moderated by Vanity Fair’s Sonia Saraiya, explaining how We Are Lady Parts came to be. Manzoor shared the show drew inspired by her music-filled childhood and strong women in her life, then explained that the series required engaging talent who knew their way around instruments – or would at least be willing to learn how to play.
“A lot of the actors didn’t play their instruments,” she said, before adding that brother Shez Manzoor, who co-writes the series’ original numbers with sister Sanya, taught the actresses how to play over Zoom lessons.
The series stars Anjana Vasan, Sarah Impey, Juliette Motamed, Faith Omole and Lucie Shorthouse. Only a couple of the actresses had...

Stories about fictional bands aren’t always as sharp as those bands themselves. Tales of upwardly mobile rock acts can be bland even if the performances themselves have some panache to them. Ragtag groups can be shabby on stage even if the looks at the lives of the individual musicians are the more entertaining draw.
But as is the case with “We Are Lady Parts,” the Channel 4 co-production premiering today on Peacock, there’s a clear charm in seeing the points where the music and whatever surrounds it line up in harmony. Playful with enough flair and distinct twists to shake up its more familiar pieces, “We are Lady Parts” is an energetic merging of aspiring artists and the fictional frame that presents them. For Lady Parts, those harmonies aren’t always tidy: They’re a punk quartet filling up any kind of rehearsal space with as much sound as the room can handle.

“Our music is about representation. It’s about being heard,” explains Saira (Sarah Kameela Impey), the lead singer of the band that gives the new Peacock import comedy We Are Lady Parts its title. Saira’s explanation for why she plays music is a fairly trite one out of context — what wannabe rock, pop, or hip-hop star hasn’t expressed a similar sentiment before in fiction? But once you understand that Lady Parts is an all-female, all-Muslim punk band in London, Saira’s battle cry about the importance of representation...

Soundcheck! Peacock's new music comedy We Are Lady Parts packs a hilarious punch along with plenty of catchy tunes. The British import series follows the members of a fictional Muslim female punk band called Lady Parts, who are on a mission to find a lead guitarist...and, you know, become famous. Anjana Vasan stars as a geeky microbiology Phd student who is a guitar novice that the band—made up of Saira (Sarah Kameela Impey), Bisma (Faith Omole), Momatz (Lucie Shorthouse) and Ayesha (Juliette Motamed)—tries to recruit to join Lady Parts. The series is created, written and directed by Nida Manzoor, who previously directed episodes of Doctor Who. Set in London, the...

U.K. broadcaster Channel 4 and NBCUniversal streamer Peacock’s riotous new comedy “We Are Lady Parts” is releasing an official soundtrack, Variety can reveal.
The stereotype-busting, Working Title-produced series about a fictional Muslim female punk band premiered on Channel 4 on Thursday to effusive praise from the U.K. press, which has widely noted that the show’s subject matter is effectively unprecedented on British television, where harmful misconceptions about the Muslim community are still rife in programming.
One look at the “We Are Lady Parts” track listing, which includes tongue-in-cheek songs such as “Ain’t No One Gonna Honour Kill My Sister But Me” and “Voldemort Under My Headscarf,” speaks volumes about the show, which boldly presents a group of female characters rarely seen on British and American lineups.
