Ms. Pat could never be June Cleaver. Nor does she have to be. That point is made in the very first episode of The Ms. Pat Show’s recently released eight-episode fourth season. During her signature stand-up routine kicking off each episode of the BET+ series (the comedy is based on its star’s stand-up material), Patricia “Ms. Pat” Williams offers poignant and biting commentary on television’s yesteryear.
Styled from head to toe in the look of the time, punctuated by a circle skirt, the episode fades to black and white as the fictional Ms. Pat and her TV family — sons Brandon (Vince Swann) and Junebug (Theodore Barnes), daughters Janelle (Briyana Guadalupe) and Ashley (Brittany Inge), husband Terry (J. Bernard Calloway), and sister Denise (Tami Roman) — try to adapt to that era. But as both pregnancy and race, two topics Leave It to Beaver and its ilk never addressed,...

Ms. Pat is back for a third season of shenanigans as the Emmy-nominated comedy series “The Ms. Pat Show” continues. In celebration of Feb. 23 season premiere, series star Patricia “Ms. Pat” Williams and showrunner Jordan E. Cooper sat down for a Variety TV Screening Series conversation, presented by BET+, to discuss classic sitcoms, getting “The Jeffersons” star Marla Gibbs to curse and tackling society’s ongoing obsession with Botox.
“The Ms. Pat Show” is based on Williams’ personal life, drawing from the comedienne’s past as a teenage mom and ex-felon. Williams concurrently serves as a writer and producer on the series, which she developed alongside Cooper. The Season 3 premiere also marks Cooper’s directing debut and he helmed three of the nine new episodes.
“We started this journey together,” Williams said, fondly reflecting on her collaboration with Cooper. “So to see him direct, it just brought tears to my eyes.

The real-life struggles that The Ms. Pat Show draws its material from seem more ripe for a gritty, sobering drama than broad, punchline-driven comedy.
Poverty. Drug addiction. Childhood abuse. A criminal past. It doesn’t exactly scream out laugh-a-minute.
But its star, Patricia “Ms. Pat” Williams, long ago found that using comedy to plow through life’s pain was the key to her success. Not only has her approach resulted in a sitcom that’s a fledgling hit on BET+, it has transformed her as well: “Comedy has healed me so much.”
Unlike most sitcoms, this one is firmly anchored around the stand-up comic’s unlikely rise from society’s margins to attain the American dream. In real life and on TV, Ms. Pat is no stereotypical TV mom. Think Roseanne of the 1980s and 1990s, but even rawer. The show, which kicked off its second season Aug.

HBO announced that the final season of “Insecure” will premiere on Oct. 24 and released a first look at the season.
“I keep frontin’ everybody like I’m not scared about what’s next for me, but I am terrified,” Issa Rae’s character Issa says in a teaser, which you can watch below.
The comedy follows the trials, heartaches and twists of L.A.-based Issa and those closest to her as they navigate love, life, friendship and adapting to newfound responsibilities in their 30s.
Viewers last saw Issa and Lawrence (Jay Ellis) attempting to reconcile, but things got messy when his other ex, Condola (Christina Elmore), told him she was pregnant and planning on keeping the baby. Issa and Molly’s (Yvonne Orji) friendship was strained, while Molly’s relationship with Andrew (Alexander Hodge) came to an end. And Tiffany (Amanda Seales) ran away from home — causing the whole gang to search for her.

Family sitcom The Ms. Pat Show, based on the titular comedian’s stand-up comedy and memoir, didn’t have the easiest road to BET+, executive producer Lee Daniels revealed during a the show’s TCA panel on Tuesday.
According to the Oscar-nominated director, the comedy’s creative team “went through the wringer trying to bring this to light.” For Daniels, bringing Ms. Pat’s humor and memoir to screen was a “no-brainer.” However, momentum slowed when trying to find a home for the series. The series was initially set up at Fox with a different writer during the 2016-17 season, then moved to Hulu in fall 2019 and eventually landed at BET+ in 2020.

Gavin Lewis (NCIS, Ominous), Theodore Barnes (Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Nicky, Ricky, Dicky and Dawn), Shelby Simmons (Andi Mack) and Cynthia McWilliams (Real Husbands of Hollywood) are set as leads in live-action multi-camera comedy The Prince of Peoria, from the Internet network’s Kids & Family division.
Written by Nick Stanton and Devin Bunje, creators of Disney Xd’s Gamer’s Guide to Pretty Much Everything, The Prince of Peoria has a Coming to America vibe for the younger set. When Emil (Lewis), a 13-year-old prince from a wealthy island kingdom, travels to the U.S. to live incognito as an exchange student, he strikes up an unlikely friendship with Teddy (Barnes), a fastidious, overachieving boy who is Emil’s total opposite.
Lewis’ Prince Emil is the gregarious, wide-eyed 13-year-old Prince of Buronia, who’s lived a sheltered life and dreams of one day having a best friend.

The pilot to Bad Judge feels off. That's not unexpected for a show that's already had two showrunners, a heavily revised first episode, and major cast alterations before the pilot has even premiered. Out of all of the behind-the-scenes calamity, though, comes a pilot that looks more like Frankenstein's Monster than a half-hour comedy. It's an episode that stitches together parts of completely different concepts in the hopes of making something cohesive, but instead delivers an episode nothing short of erratic. In the patchwork of a pilot, Bad Judge is missing just about every key ingredient—coherent plotting, concrete characterization,...

It’s hard to tell whether we should be impressed by Rebecca Wright, or just feel a little sorry for her.
Based on the series premiere of Bad Judge, I’m guessing it’s a little of both.
In the freshman comedy, which debuted Thursday on NBC, Private Practice‘s Kate Walsh stars as the titular judge, who’s excellent in the courtroom — but outside it? Well, she’s a mess. (Exhibit A: In the first five minutes of the show, she oversleeps, grabs a pregnancy test on her way to work, then celebrates its negative results as she walks into a sentencing.

Just keeping busy before its big schedule announcement on Sunday, NBC picked up a trio of comedies on Friday afternoon, including two from executive producer Will Ferrell. The "Anchorman" star and "Anchorman" director Adam McKay's Gary Sanchez Productions is behind "Bad Judge" and "Mission Control," which will be joined by "One Big Happy" on NBC's slate for next season. Sadly, Ferrell has nothing to do with "One Big Happy," but with Ellen DeGeneres executive producing, it doesn't lack for behind-the-scenes starpower. Let's look at the three new NBC comedies and let's try not to resent that they were ordered while "Community" was cancelled... In addition to DeGeneres, "One Big Happy" is executive produced by creator Liz Feldman and pilot director Scott Ellis. The comedy focuses on best friends Lizzy (Elisha Cuthbert) and Luke (Nick Zano). She's a Type-a lesbian! He's a laid-back straight guy! They've decided that they want to have a family together,...
