SandalwoodThis mildly entertaining drama is just too predictableRakesh MeharWhat if all the money in the world couldn’t buy you the one thing you need? Would you be able to walk away from all that wealth for the sake of that one unattainable wish? In Amma I Love You, it’s a mother’s life that hangs in balance, forcing Siddharth (Chiranjeevi Sarja) to live the life of a beggar for 48 days. A man who could buy the world served on a silver platter is suddenly reduced to begging for his next meal. How far will he go to save his mother? And what will he learn along the way? These are the questions that this faithful adaptation of the Tamil hit Pichaikkaran is ostensibly discussing. However, it’s the first question that the film is most obsessed with, laying on the “mother sentiment” thickly right from the title sequence. So, as the cast and crew are introduced in photographs with their mothers, a voice-over talks about how mothers are cooks, cleaners, launderers, and so on, all rolled into one. It goes on to describe passionately just how much mothers do for their children and families every day. But, of course! It’s too much trouble to make the lives of mothers easier by creating a gender-equal house, and so, the next best thing is a family tribute. Sithara is introduced to us as the mother who can do no wrong, whose nobility and generosity would put even Mother Teresa to shame. So it’s no surprise that Siddharth is willing to live in abject poverty to save her. Unfortunately, though, Siddharth’s experience isn’t a genuine journey of discovery of how the other side lives, so much as a poor-cation, a temporary jaunt into this "exotic" world of poverty. So, in the middle of this trying ordeal, Siddharth still has the time to go off and be a chef at a pizza parlour, fall in love, and fight dozens of baddies much like any of our other middle class heroes would. Even becoming poor comes easily to this rich man for whom the world is an oyster. It’s only his personal pride that initially gets in the way of his riches-to-rags journey. Once he makes up his mind though, he quickly morphs into an expert beggar, easily wins over friends among his fellow mendicants, and almost breezes through his 48-day “ordeal”. Meanwhile, what most catches your attention is just how much scorn all the other characters in the film have for beggars. The villain’s henchmen, for instance, are ashamed about being beaten up by a beggar. Siddharth’s new girlfriend Bindu (Nishvika Naidu) deletes a selfie of the two of them because there’s a beggar in the background. And even when Siddharth himself rises up to defend his fellow beggars from middle-class scorn, his words drip with condescension and pity. That’s because Siddharth’s experience isn’t really a genuine journey into lives completely different from his own, it’s just a chance to prove how dedicated he is to his mother. As Sithara’s character remarks unknowingly at one point of the film, the desperate lives that they (the begging poor) live is not something “we” could live even for a day. By living it for 48 days, though, Siddharth proves just how much he’s willing to suffer for his mother. Perhaps the only sympathetic moments when beggars are treated as interesting human beings with interesting life experiences to offer are in the comedy track, when two other beggars show our hero the ins and outs of the begging world. Like when they tell him that he looks so plump and prosperous that even Mother Teresa would feel no pity for him. These few sequences work because they present beggars as regular people trying to live a decent life just like the rest of us. The rest of this world presented in the film, however, simply consists of the most predictably tactics to invoke our pity. It’s not as if Amma I Love You is an unwatchable film. With plenty of potboiler elements such as songs, comedy tracks, and fights, the film skips along to a mildly entertaining finish. The songs in the film have been scored fairly well, too. On the acting front, Chiranjeevi is mildly engaging in parts, while Nishvika easily gets the audience to like her. Better performances come from some of the supporting cast like Chikkanna and Prakash Belawadi. But what the film never manages to do is make us genuinely interested in this begging world that our hero suddenly comes to inhabit. Once we’re done with our poor-cation in Siddharth’s company, we can all comfortably return to our own worlds without too much thought about the lives of those less fortunate. While that fact might not register while watching most standard Sandalwood blockbusters, it hits home when you see a release like Seizer. Seizer is the perfect example of a mediocre plot that suffers from even worse execution. It tells the story of Seizer (Chiranjeevi Sarja) who repossesses vehicles for a financier (Ravichandran) when the owners default on their loans. Along the way, Seizer tangles with a big-time gangster (Prakash Raj) who can’t take the affront to his reputation from such a small-timer and vows revenge. But there are also other gangsters getting murdered along the way. Is it just coincidence that has brought these figures together or is there more to the story? There’s just not enough meat to this old-fashioned story of greed, masculine arrogance and revenge for director Vinay Krishna to fill an entire film. So, he tries to give us a look at the repo industry through the person of Seizer. Unfortunately, though the repo job largely seems to involve searching for the right car in parking lots and using a master key to open them when no one is looking. Occasionally, there’s a bit of bravado and a fight or two to handle along the way. Hardly the stuff of action blockbusters. Not much of the rest of Seizer’s life makes too much cinematic sense either. There is a romance with Parul Yadav that proceeds in strange and abrupt encounters that give us no sense of why a woman would fall so hard for our hero. The comedy sequences involving Sadhu Kokila too struggle to earn more than a chuckle or two. One of the basic problems of the film is the lack of effort going into plotting the story. So, the movie proceeds in fits and starts, with no clear markers for why something happens when it does. As a result, the audience spends the whole of the first half waiting for the story to go somewhere as various characters throw around punch dialogues. It’s only long after the interval that the story takes any shape at all, but stumbles to a finish before you’ve had the time to make any sense of it. Lacking excitement in the story itself, the film tries to compensate with some predictably bombastic background music and songs, but falters here too. Perhaps the only things to look forward to in the film are some of the scenes involving the veterans Prakash Raj and Ravichandran. But there’s just not enough energy in the story for these actors to play with. Chiranjeevi Sarja, on the other hand, is stone-faced in his portrayal of a one-dimensional character. Unless you’re a hardcore fan of the actors or the genre, Seizer should probably just be given a miss.

She currently has films like Kontract and Rajendra Ponnappa in her kitty in different stages of production. On the other hand, Ramesh Aravind is busy with the post-production of his upcoming directorial Butterfly, which has Parul Yadav in the lead. Apart from this biggie, Chiranjeevi Sarja and his uncle Arjun Sarja will be clashing at the box office with their respective films Samhaara and Prema Baraha also planned for release on the same day. Samhaara, directed by Guru Deshpande, has Kavya Shetty and Hari Priya playing the female leads while Prema Baraha is written, directed and produced by Arjun Sarja and stars Chandan Kumar, Aishwarya Arjun, Sadhu Kokila, and Rangayana Raghu. The film will mark Aishwarya Arjun’s entry into the Kannada film industry and will be released in Tamil as well as Kannada.

It is, in fact, a bilingual, that will be released in Tamil and Kannada. The Tamil version is titled Solli Vidava. The three ladies from the Sarja family – Arjun’s mother, Aishwarya’s mother and actor Dhruva and Chiranjeevi Sarja’s mother – released the audio. Arjun’s father-in-law and actor Rajesh were also present at the venue, amongst others. Arjun Sarja has written the story and screenplay of the film apart from directing it. He also produced Prema Baraha/Solli Vidava, which is due for release on December 29. The promotions for this entertainer are happening in full swing, with the team promoting it vigorously in both the languages. During the audio launch, Arjun recalled that ace producer Parvathamma Rajkumar launched the film and the wished the team. Arjun said that he wished she was present when the film was released. On directing his daughter, the actor-filmmaker said that it was an additional responsibility for him, but he liked the challenges he faced. Mentioning Arjun as her father and guru, Aishwarya said that she is lucky to have such a supportive dad. Starring Chandan Kumar and Aishwarya Arjun in the lead roles, the film also features Sadhu Kokila, Rangayana Raghu and Suhasini. Jassie Gift has composed music for Prema Baraha/Solli Vidava with Hc Venugopal as the cinematographer. It may be mentioned here that Aishwarya Arjun’s acting debuted in the 2013 Tamil movie Pattathu Yaanai, which had Vishal in the lead role. The 51st production venture of Dwarakish Productions was announced at the Bengaluru residence of actor, producer and director Dwarakish on his 75th birthday amidst much fanfare some months ago. Reports are that the film will be the Kannada remake of the Tamil hit film Pichaikaran which had Vijay Anthony playing the lead role. It was also announced that reprising his role in the Kannada remake would be Ishan, who made his debut in the bilingual Rogue. However, there seems to be a change in the hero with Chiranjeevi Sarja stepping in.
