Kevin Smith, who has recently been approved with a SAG waiver to make his new movie The 4:30 Movie, is one of the biggest pioneers in independent filmmaking in the 1990s. He joins Robert Rodriguez as someone who was able to make a feature film on a minuscule budget with basically no crew on a do-it-yourself mentality. Both directors would gain acclaim for their efforts as both Clerks and El Mariachi won over fans at film festivals and started a revolution of non-studio productions. Smith would go on to carry over the characters Jay and Silent Bob onto his other films, including their own spin-offs, and even made two sequels to the one that started it all.

At this point in time, many film screenings are oddly missing from the lineup, except for kiddie pic Teen Titans Go! To the Movies! on Friday. Perhaps there will be more as they’re often announced at the last minute or suddenly during the confab (Read Lionsgate’s Blair Witch). Comic-Con has traditionally been a successful launch pad for such fan faves as Sausage Party, Star Trek Beyond, The Visit, Annabelle: Creation and Don’t Breathe. In his first feature film role, newcomer Lorenzo Allchurch leads the cast in dystopian drama The White King, starring as 12 year Djata.

Based on the book by Gyorgy Dragoman, The White King follows Djata, a precocious 12-year-old boy coming to grips with his father’s internment by the totalitarian state he calls home. Preyed upon by secret police officers and venal dignitaries, Djata and his mother, played by Agyness Deyn, are forced to navigate a world of propaganda, abuse and vicious gangs, making them risk everything to reunite their family.
