There's nothing better than a good romcom. It's a genre that took root pretty much as soon as movies could talk, and, for all its accused repetitiveness, has been going strong ever since, always finding fresh new ways to assert its worth.
In the past century of film history, we've seen great romantic comedies ranging from the sweet to the wild to the darkly hilarious to the slyly subversive; the only thing that hasn't changed is the enduring appeal of watching charismatic stars flirt, trade barbs, field misunderstandings, and ultimately fall — or not — into each other's arms.
To create this ranking of the best romantic comedies ever, we've looked over the genre's entire chronology, and carefully plucked classics from all eras. Every single one of these films is essential viewing, to be clear; there's no going wrong here if you're looking for recs.

Whether you’re into rom-coms, action mashups, or dark humor, this list has you covered.
I just watched “Another Simple Favor,” and honestly? It was a lot of fun — maybe even more out there than the original, in a good way. The tone is exactly the same: funny with a twist of intrigue, set against a gorgeous backdrop that makes the whole thing feel like a stylish little vacation. It’s the kind of movie that doesn’t take itself too seriously but still keeps you hooked, and it got me thinking about other comedies worth queuing up. So if you’re in the mood for something smart, silly, or just plain entertaining, here are my top seven comedy movies streaming on Prime Video right now.
Take a look at my list and then head down to the comments at the bottom of the page and share your thoughts on the matter.

The trailer for the new film about the dainty woodland creatures will wash over your brain like a warm 70-second bath. Does every toy movie need to be an Oscar-worthy social commentary?
This Easter, a new movie based on Sylvanian Families will be released into cinemas. If you’ve been keeping up with films based on toys for the last decade or so, then you’ll be forgiven for feeling a modicum of dread upon hearing this news. Because ever since Barbie took a billion dollars and found itself nominated for a bunch of Oscars, a toy movie isn’t allowed to be a toy movie any more. It has to be an auteur-driven toy movie; one that also functions as a commentary about the capitalist machinations that drive the toy industry.

The Emmy- and Oscar-nominated actor and writer is joining the Disney-owned streamer’s lineup of comedy specials. The special will be the second of his career — and the first in more than a decade. His inaugural special, Beta Male, aired on Comedy Central in 2013.
Since then, Nanjiani has worked regularly as an actor in HBO’s Silicon Valley and Hulu’s Welcome to Chippendales and feature films The Big Sick — for which he and Emily V. Nanjiani will also be an executive producer of the Hulu special alongside Elan Gale and Bernie Schaeffer. ITV American and TheYearOfElan are producing. A date and title for the special will be announced later.

The 2024 animated film Flow hit Max on Feb. 14, and in the few days since its debut, it has quickly climbed to the number one spot on the streaming service, beating out the Florence Pugh and Andrew Garfield romance film We Live in Time, and older titles such as Central Intelligence and the first Final Destination movie. The film is a passion project for Gints Zilbalodis, who directed, produced, wrote, and edited the film. The multi-faceted creator made the film with a small animation team and used the open-source software Blender to bring the endearing animals to life, making the streaming success for the small film feel that much more significant.
Flow centers around a "courageous cat" whose home is completely engulfed in water after a massive flood, leaving the animal without a home. The unnamed cat disembarks on a journey to escape the ravaging waters and comes across a capybara,...

The Romantic-Comedy genre has served cheeseballs to audiences who have often flocked to them for a pat on the back for years. It has not only provided the audience with the much-needed hope that love is around the corner but has also entertained them with neatly packed humor that makes a dolly out of life’s most lovable moments. However, with changing times, the genre has undergone a makeover of sorts. More films have established the idea of a rom-com but have twisted the narrative to serve the greater good. Subverting the genre has thus become a common trait. Indie films of late have often done wonders within the genre itself. The best romantic comedy movies of the decade have thus come out from the indie cinema. 24 of those are as follows:
24. Two Night Stand (2014) | Director: Max Nichols

From ‘Superbad’ to ‘The 40-Year-Old Virgin,’ these Apatow hits still hold up.
One of the big reasons I wanted to get into writing movies is because of Judd Apatow. His comedies are more than just funny – they’re heartfelt and genuine, with imperfect characters doing their best to get on with it. He helped popularize the “antihero” protagonist (Seth Rogan is a good example). Someone who’s not the brightest, not the most attractive, but their heart is in the right place… and they sure are funny. The prolific writer, producer, and director has a ton of hit movies to his name, but I want to give you my favorites. Here are the top 7 Judd Apatow comedies you can stream right now

Lee Isaac Chung, the director behind films and series including Minari (2020), The Mandalorian and this year's box office smash-hit Twisters, has opened up about why his live-action movie adaptation of Makoto Shinkai's Your Name was doomed to failure.
Chung was excited to bring his own take on Shinkai's Your Name to the world as a fan of the original film. "That was a situation in which I just loved all the people so much," he told Empire. However, while working from a script by Emily V. Gordon, he realized what a monumental task had been put in front of him. "I like the animated film," Chung explained, "but what I didn't realize is how hard it is to adapt a Japanese animated movie and to try to do that for America. That was the goal that Toho had put before us. But it's really hard to do."

It would be fair to say that the last few years have been something of a whirlwind for director Lee Isaac Chung. Just over half a decade ago, the University of Utah graduate was about ready to call time on his career as an independent filmmaker and pivot from making movies to teaching about them instead. And then along came Minari in 2020, and with it nods for Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Screenplay at the 2021 Oscars, setting Chung on a path that would lead to directing gigs on The Mandalorian and the upcoming Star Wars: Skeleton Crew, as well as — of course — this summer’s smash hit disaster movie sequel Twisters. But there was almost another huge project in Chung’s pipeline that never quite worked out — a live-action adaptation of Makoto Shinkai’s anime juggernaut Your Name.

A trickle is becoming a flood for Bluesky, the social media company that has seen spectacular growth since the presidential election. On Tuesday, the microblogging platform hit 20 million users, after averaging 1 million new users per day over the past five days.
According to a Nov. 13 post by Bluesky CEO Jay Graber, the site had 6 million users in late August, nearly 11 million in late October and hit 15 million users on Nov. 15. It added another 5 million users in just five days, with the explosive growth seen since Nov. 5, the day of the election, accelerating.
Bluesky has been one of the main beneficiaries of millions of users leaving Elon Musk’s X, as the site formerly known as Twitter descends into a mess of bots, extreme content, crypto scams, ads, pornography, racism, transphobia and misinformation.

“Gladiator II” pulled out all the stops Monday night while celebrating its Los Angeles premiere at the Tcl Chinese Theatre — and everyone got to keep their head, too!
Stars Paul Mescal and Denzel Washington were in attendance for the well-heeled Hollywood fête as heavyweight actors, influencers and industry power players turned out to toast Ridley Scott and Paramount Pictures’ highly anticipated, decades-in-the-making sequel to their 2001 Best Picture Oscar winner, “Gladiator.”
The star of that original bloody epic, Russell Crowe, also took home that year’s Academy Award for Best Actor. Could Mescal follow suit? Or perhaps supporting attention for Washington or Pedro Pascal? Or at long last, will Scott take home the year’s top prize for directing?
Only time will tell what awaits “Gladiator II.” But on Monday, Hollywood was alight with excitement over the two-and-half-hour epic, also starring Connie Nielsen, “Stranger Things” breakout Joseph Quinn and Fred Hechinger of “The White Lotus” fame.

Romantic relationships are among the deepest and most complex connections a person can engage in, and countless movies have explored the joy, passion, and heartache at the center of these dynamics. From the exhilarating beginnings of a new love affair to the devesting demise of a once-loving marriage, the greatest romance movies capture the good, the bad, and the ugly of trying to find love in an increasingly fractured and complicated world. These depictions become even more profound due to the incredible skills of talented writers, actors, and directors who bring these stories to life.
A truly great romance movie has to include deep and complex characters whose love story feels real and believable. This can include the complexities of emotional baggage or conflicting life circumstances, as the conflict that romance conjures is prime material for effective and heartbreaking filmmaking. The best David Alan Grier movies and TV shows mostly feature several comedies and comedic series. However, he does have a few random dramatic roles to his name to show his versatility. Grier graduated from college with a Bachelor's degree in radio, television, and film from the University of Michigan and then got his Masters from the Yale School of Drama. It was an impressive education that paid off when he ended up starring in Broadway musicals to start his career, including the hit Dreamgirls.
This caught the attention of film legend Robert Altman (M*A*S*H), who cast him in the movie Streamers. While he started on Broadway and debuted in an Altman movie, Grier's comedic timing finally helped him break out. After taking a role in the Keenen Ivory Wayans-directed movie I'm Gonna Git You Sucka, he moved on to the cast of In Living Color, which is when his career exploded.

Would it be that unbelievable if Steve Martin, Selena Gomez and Martin Short announced they were releasing an album together?
All three “Only Murders in the Building” stars have singing chops, and Season 3 of their hit Hulu series featured the “Death Rattle Dazzle” musical.
“Can you imagine?” Martin said when I suggested the trio record an album at the recent Los Angeles premiere of “Only Murders” Season 4. “It’ll be called ‘Banjos, Show Tunes and Pop.’”
He cracked, “It’s a perfect blend. It’s out finally – due to popular demand.”
Short added, “I’ll tell you what wouldn’t sell.”
As for new music from Gomez, it doesn’t sound like it’s happening anytime soon. “I’m in love with this right now,” she said. “I’m enjoying this.”
All three “Only Murders” stars go into Emmys night next month with acting nominations. The show received a total 21 noms.

The films in contention for the 2024 Best Original Screenplay Oscar are “Anatomy of a Fall,” “The Holdovers,” “Maestro,” “May December,” and “Past Lives.” Our odds currently indicate that “Anatomy of a Fall” (16/5) will take the prize, followed in order of likelihood by “The Holdovers” (37/10), “Past Lives” (9/2), “Maestro” (9/2), and “May December” (9/2).
Of the eight individual writers behind these five films, only Josh Singer (“Maestro”) has earned recognition in this category before. Indeed, he is looking to go two-for-two here after succeeding on his 2016 bid for “Spotlight,” which he co-wrote with its director, Tom McCarthy. Coincidentally, he shares his new nomination with the director of “Maestro,” Bradley Cooper, who also has a personal stake in the Best Picture and Best Actor races as a producer and star of the same film.

In a review, Rolling Stone warned moviegoers that the 2021 Marvel movie Eternals “will bore you to death.” Moviegoers were somewhat kinder, giving the picture a solid C+, or 77 percent on Rotten Tomatoes, and they spent close to $165 million domestically to see it, according to The Numbers. But the stigma of being associated with one of the meh-est Marvel movies weighed heavily on one of its stars, Kumail Nanjiani, who entered therapy when critics turned on it.

Actor Kumail Nanjiani has been reflecting on the bad press Marvel’s Eternals got, and how he had to seek therapy to cope.
Kumail Nanjiani was part of the rather large ensemble cast of Marvel’s Eternals. The film was directed by Oscar-winner Chloé Zhao and Marvel had high hopes for it; Marvel chief Kevin Feige, for example, was reportedly in awe of Zhao’s style of filmmaking and in theory, Eternals would have pushed Marvel from mass entertainment to… mass entertainment with a “From Oscar winning director” in its trailer.
However, Eternals was received pretty poorly. The film holds a 47 percent critics score on Rotten Tomatoes, with much criticism aimed at the convoluted story and bloated runtime. Audiences didn’t really connect with the film either; Eternals grossed just over $400 million at the global box office, but it had a price tag of $272.6 million.

The Sundance Film Festival is known for its role in helping smaller films find wider distribution and for attracting major distributors who bid for distribution rights. The prices for securing distribution rights at Sundance can vary greatly depending on the movie, with smaller releases being acquired relatively cheaply and films with awards potential commanding high sums. Streaming services like Netflix and Amazon Prime Video have contributed to an increase in spending at Sundance, with some movies being sold for record-breaking amounts.
As one of the world's foremost independent movie festivals, the Sundance Film Festival plays a pivotal role in ensuring that smaller films can find wider distribution. Since its inception, major distributors have used the festival as a cinematic marketplace, attempting to identify which releases have moneymaking potential and bidding for their rights accordingly. As a result, many of Sundance's most famous movie releases have been sold for eye-watering amounts.

Kumail Nanjiani has written a new romantic comedy, marking his first collaboration with his wife, Emily V. Gordon, since the success of The Big Sick. The Big Sick received critical acclaim and an Oscar nomination, making another romantic comedy from the same duo highly anticipated. This new movie is coming at the perfect time for Nanjiani, allowing him to showcase his skills as a writer and potentially deliver a memorable performance similar to The Big Sick.

‘The Big Sick’ Duo Kumail Nanjiani, Emily V. Gordon Have Written Script for New Romantic Comedy Film
The writers behind 2017’s “The Big Sick,” Kumail Nanjiani and Emily V. Gordon, told Variety that they have finished writing the script for a new romantic comedy they hope to start producing and developing, with Nanjiani also confirming his plans to star in the new film.
While speaking with Marc Malkin for Variety On the Carpet presented by Directv, the duo confirmed they were working on a new project together: “We’ve written a movie,” Nanjiani said, which Gordon then elaborated on, “We wrote a script that we’re looking to make.”
Though the two kept details about the film’s plot hidden, Nanjiani did confirm that the film is a “comedy, romance, drama” that will follow “another relationship” that is “not as personal” as “The Big Sick.”
“It’s not as nakedly auto-biographical,” Nanjiani said. Later, he joked that it is about someone who “should go to therapy.”

Greta Gerwig could be in line for a hattrick of Oscar nominations this year for Picture, Director, and Original Screenplay for her marvelous work on Warner Bros.’s “Barbie.” The multi-hyphenate co-wrote the movie with her partner, Noah Baumbach, while she brought to life the world of Barbie as a visionary helmer of one of the biggest films of the year. She has reaped three Oscar bids to date for two of her previous pictures. Let’s take a closer look at those races.
Her first bids came in 2018 for “Lady Bird,” which tells the story of a 17-year-old girl who comes of age in Sacramento, California, in 2002. Saoirse Ronan stars in the lead role while Timothée Chalamet, Lucas Hedges, and Laurie Metcalf also featured. “Lady Bird” was a critical darling, which meant that Gerwig enjoyed a good time at the Critics Choice Awards, securing nominations for both Original Screenplay and Director.

BlacKkKlansman, 11.05pm, Film4, Monday, November 6
Spike Lee's Cannes Grand Prix winner was inspired by the unlikely true tale of an African American police officer (John David Washington) who infiltrated the Ku Klux Klan in the 1970s, with the help of his white Jewish colleague (Adam Driver). This isn't just a period satire but a commentary on the racism that still exists in society. Lee's message may be delivered with humour but it's no less of a stinging indictment on the state of the world for that. Read what Spike Lee said about the film in Cannes.
The Big Sick, 10pm, BBC3, Tuesday, November 7
Real-life comedy couple Kumail Nanjiani and Emily V Gordon based this tale of a culture-clash relationship upon their unconventional courtship – a romance that began with Gordon heckling stand-up Nanjiani from the crowd. He is Muslim, with a family dead set on arranging.

On July 15th, the independent film community’s rowdy, activist uncle, Mark Ruffalo, tweeted a call to action: “How about we all jump into indies now? Content creators create a film & TV-making system alongside the studio & streaming networks? So there is actual competition. Then we just do what we always do — create great content & they can buy it, or we take it out ourselves & We share in those sales.”
I say, “Hell yeah, Uncle Mark!” From where I stand, strike season is the perfect time to answer his call by making a short film. For those of you asking, “am I really allowed to make a short film under strike rules?” or “what about standing in solidarity with my SAG-AFTRA and WGA friends?” Both organizations have very clear parameters on what is and is not allowed but for now yes, you can and you should make short films right now.

It’s Day 5 of the SAG-AFTRA strike and Day 79 of the WGA strike.
Rachel McAdams, The Simpsons’ James L. Brooks, Succession duo Alan Ruck and Justine Lupe, Jaleel White, who played Steve Urkel, and spiritual advisor/Presidential candidate Marianne Williamson were some of the broad range of people out on the picket lines across LA.

In 2021, "Ghostbusters: Afterlife" brought back the paranormal comedy franchise with a whole new perspective. Director Jason Reitman took over the reins from his filmmaker father Ivan Reitman (rest in peace), and he gave fans a legacy-quel that focused on Mckenna Grace and Finn Wolfhard as the grandchildren of Egon Spengler as they learned about the legacy of their grandfather and the history of the original Ghostbusters team. But this time, all the spooky action unfolded in a desolate Oklahoma town in the middle of nowhere.
Despite the passing of Harold Ramis, "Afterlife" brought back a computer generated spirit version of Egon alongside Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, and Ernie Hudson as Peter Venkman, Ray Stantz, and Winston Zeddemore. The new generation of Ghostbusters met the old guard, and they joined forces to defeat yet another reincarnation of Gozer the Gozerian. But that was just the beginning.

Ghostbusters: Afterlife 2, the currently untitled legacy sequel, has made some major casting announcements. The film, which is currently filming and due in theaters on December 20, is the fifth entry in the long-running franchise that began with the original Ghostbusters in 1984. Ghostbusters: Afterlife, which premiered in 2021, ignored the events of the 2016 Ghostbusters reboot in favor of following the grandchildren of original Ghostbuster Egon Spengler (the late Harold Ramis) on a new adventure in Oklahoma.
Per Deadline, four new cast members have been added to the Ghostbusters: Afterlife 2 cast. This will include a reunion of Eternals co-stars Kumail Nanjiani and Patton Oswalt, in currently unspecified roles. Also boarding the project are James Acaster and Emily Alyn Lind.

Welcome to your academic plagiarism nightmare. Dr. Natalia Mehlman Petrzela, an associate professor of history at the New School in New York, alleges that her Spotify podcast “Welcome to Your Fantasy” was used for Hulu’s “Welcome to Chippendales” limited series without acknowledgment — or payment.
Petrzela revealed that a year before “Welcome to Your Fantasy” was released, a producer shared early episodes with various Hollywood writers and producers to pitch a screen adaptation. Kumail Nanjiani and his wife and writing partner Emily V. Gordon were among those pitched and turned down working with the podcast.
“Kumail and I listened to the podcast and it’s such a fun story, but unfortunately I don’t think it’s the right project for us to write,” Gordon wrote in an email to a producer as shared by Dr. Petrzela, as reported by The New York Times. “As much as we love watching crime stories,...

There are people out there who will tell you they don’t like romantic comedies. These same folks may as well confess that they’re dead inside, with a frozen void replacing where their heart once beat. You shouldn’t be their friend.
Romantic comedies are as old as the movies themselves. Generation after generation, audiences have sought out stories about the universal appeal (or agony) of love. And they’ve often wanted to laugh at it. When two characters—typically as photogenic as a camera lens demands—can generate real heat onscreen, and often channel that into knowing humor for the viewer, it’s more tangible than any visual effect. To wit William Shakespeare, it can create much ado about nothing, and it’s an absolute pleasure to laugh along with.
And despite the best efforts of some studios to drown the genre in the bathtub, rom-coms have endured in the 21st century,...

The comic actor raised eyebrows with his muscle-bound look for his role in Marvel’s Eternals. Now he’s gone the opposite way to play the sleazy founder of the Chippendales
At 44, the comic and actor Kumail Nanjiani is best known for playing different versions of himself. His 2017 breakthrough in the Oscar-nominated romcom The Big Sick saw him act out his early romance with his wife, Emily Gordon, as she became seriously ill, while his wry, self-effacing routines made him a recognisable name on the US standup circuit through referencing his upbringing in Pakistan and reckoning with his identity as a Muslim American. Even his debut TV role as the coder Dinesh in six seasons of the comedy series Silicon Valley saw him draw on his early 20s experiences of working in It.
On screen, Nanjiani is wise-cracking, nerdy and prone to fits of fast-talking awkwardness. He is Hugh Grant...
