NBC has taken the axe to two of its veteran comedies: Young Rock and Grand Crew have both been cancelled, TVLine has learned. “No decision has been made” on the fate of American Auto, however, the network notes.
Young Rock, which ran for three seasons, followed the life and career of wrestling-turned-movie star Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson across several decades, including his humble beginnings as a headstrong kid nicknamed “Dewey,” his college years playing football and the early days of his professional wrestling career. NBC has made decisions on two of its three bubble comedies and one of its four pilots.
The network has opted to cancel sophomore series Grand Crew and third-year show Young Rock, leaving fellow comedy American Auto on the bubble. As part of NBC’s comedy moves Friday, the network has handed out a series order to the mockumentary series St. Denis Medical. There is no word yet on the fates of NBC’s three remaining pilots, comedy Non-Evil Twin with Amber Ruffin and dramas Murder by the Book and Wolf.
St. Denis Medical, in the vein of ABC’s breakout Emmy darling Abbott Elementary, is described as a mockumentary about an underfunded, understaffed Oregon hospital where the dedicated doctors and nurses try their best to treat patients while maintaining their own sanity. Wendi McClendon-Covey stars in the Universal TV series, marking her first role after she wrapped a 10-season...

NBC has yet to make decisions about three of its comedies.
American Auto, Grand Crew and Young Rock all remain on the bubble after the network unveiled its fall schedule with these three shows absent from fall and midseason.
NBC said “decisions are yet to be made” on the trio.
American Auto comes from Superstore creator Justin Spitzer. The series premiered its second season in January and it ended its 13-episode run in April.
Starring Ana Gasteyer, Harriet Dyer and Jon Barinholtz, American Auto hails from Spitzer and Aaron Kaplan’s Kapital Entertainment. Written by Spitzer, American Auto is set at the headquarters of a major American automotive company in Detroit, where a floundering group of executives try to rediscover the company identity amidst a rapidly changing industry.
Harriet Dyer, Humphrey Ker, Michael B. Washington, Tye White and X Mayo also star.
Spitzer executive produces via his Spitzer Holding Company with Kapital’s Kaplan.

The ninth annual SeriesFest, an annual television-centric event held in Denver, kicks off Friday with a slightly abbreviated schedule in light of the writers strike. Per WGA rules, writers are not allowed to make “promotional appearances” at film festivals or at “For Your Consideration” Emmy events. Already, a number of FYC showcases have either been canceled, or continued on but with just a screening, no panel, due to the strike.
SeriesFest becomes the first festival to be impacted by the strike. This year’s event takes place from May 5 to May 10, which now happens to coincide with the early days of the strike. As a result, showrunners have opted out of a handful of panels, while screenings of many new and returning shows will now take place without talent/showrunner Q&As. It could be an early peak at the pivot that may have to take place with other upcoming festivals,...

TV can give viewers false expectations of adult friendship. How many people who watched “Friends” or “Living Single” or “New Girl” got into shenanigans nearly as often as the characters? But Phil Augusta Jackson, creator of NBC’s “Grand Crew,” he swears it’s based on his own friend group and the wine bar where they hung out… with a few liberties taken.
“When you have a hangout show like this, what we’re showing are the moments that they get to spend time together,” Jackson told IndieWire via Zoom. “They’re always at the bar, multiple times an episode, and that doesn’t necessarily feel like real life as far as the actual frequency. It can start to feel like they just, like, live at this place… but that’s what you have to do for storytelling.”

The gang is back for a second season of “Grand Crew” on March 3, and cast members Nicole Byer, Echo Kellum, Justin Cunningham, Aaron Jennings, Carl Tart and Grasie Mercedes break down what we can expect in this exclusive trailer for the NBC series.
Says Tart, “We heard your messages. We read the tweets. This season we are drinking real wine, so now we are drunk as skunks.”
In a scene from Season 2, which you can watch above, Wyatt (Cunningham) toasts the crew with a glass of water, even though everyone tells him it’s bad luck. Sure enough, he chokes on the water, his stool falls over and his pants split. When he sighs and says, “Someone get me a damn glass of wine,” every one of his friends offers their own glass.

NBC has delayed the premiere of criminal drama “Found” from a midseason launch on Feb. 19 to a fall 2023 premiere.
“Found,” which stars Shanola Hampton as public relations specialist Gabi Mosely, shines a light on the 600,000 people reported missing in the U.S. — more than half of which are people of color. As Gabi was once a forgotten missing person, her crisis management team works to ensure that no person becomes a faceless case. As Gabi relentlessly works to safeguard others’ wellbeing, a chilling secret of her own comes back to haunt her.
In addition to the shift, NBC has ordered additional scripts to showcase its commitment to the series.
“After watching the first few episodes of ‘Found,’ it quickly became clear that our love for this show has continued to grow and grow with each step of the process,” said Susan Rovner, chairman of Entertainment Content for NBCUniversal Television and Streaming.

About the Makers of “Grand Crew”
This friendship comedy premiered on December 14, 2021, and is created by writer and producer Phil Augusta Jackson (who also created “Insecure” and “Brooklyn Nine-Nine”). Dan Goor is the executive producer.

One of the best new comedy series of the season is “Grand Crew.” This gem, the brainchild of Phil Augusta Jackson, follows the lives and loves of a group of Black millennials who converge at Grand Crew, a popular wine bar in Los Angeles. “There’s a bar down the street from where I live, where we all gather and talk about our lives and things of that nature. So that was the catalyst for the core concept for the show taking place at a wine bar,” Jackson shared.
For Jackson, “Grand Crew” was the perfect opportunity to explore some weighty themes Black men face in America, but balance that with joy and laughs. From therapy to relationship breakups to father/son issues, “Grand Crew” lends a sympathetic lens in showing the anxiety and vulnerability Black men can be afraid to show or explore within.

NBC unveiled a 2021-2022 fall season lineup that will feature a stack of “Law & Order” series on Thursdays — giving producer Dick Wolf two full nights of shows on the schedule — as the network courts audiences with dependable procedurals and nary a comedy until mid-season.
Thursday nights this fall mark a real turn from the days of the Peacock network’s must-see comedy blocks: Season 23 of “Law & Order: Svu” will be sandwiched by Wolf’s newest addition to the franchise, “Law & Order: For the Defense,” and a second season of Christopher Meloni spinoff “Law & Order: Organized Crime.” Wednesday nights feature Wolf’s “Chicago” lineup: “Chicago Med,” “Chicago Fire,” and “Chicago P.D.”
NBC has also bowed to ratings gravity and opted to produce one cycle of “The Voice” next season, not two.

NBC has ordered the single-camera comedies “Grand Crew” and “American Auto” and the drama “La Brea” for the 2021-2022 broadcast season.
All three shows were originally ordered to pilot as part of the 2019-2020 pilot season, but production on nearly every pilot across the broadcast networks was suspended due to the pandemic. NBC had announced in June that it would stagger production on its remaining pilots throughout the remainder of 2020 as part of its Covid safety protocols.
“Our driving force has always been to seek out talented storytellers who have a strong point of view,” said Lisa Katz, president of scripted content for NBCUniversal. “While these shows are very different thematically , what they have in common is a unique voice, excellent world building, and compelling storytelling. We can’t wait to share them with TV fans everywhere.”

The NBC comedy pilot based on the Kevin Hart film “Night School” is not moving forward at NBC, Variety has learned exclusively.
The half-hour multi-cam had originally gotten a pilot order in January, but the pandemic shutdown virtually all pilot production in March. Today is a comedy pilot pickup day at NBC as the network made the bulk of its half-hour orders within the past several hours.
NBC has given pilot green light to three single-camera projects: Someone Out There, a romantic comedy based on a Spanish format, from Forever creator Matt Hubbard and the writing team of Josh Siegal and Dylan Morgan (The Good Place); an untitled ensemble comedy from the Brooklyn Nine-Nine duo of writer-producer Phil Augusta Jackson and co-creator/executive producer Dan Goor; and Crazy for You, a dating comedy from former Saturday Night Live producer Rachele Lynn, fellow SNL alum Seth Meyers and SNL boss Lorne Michaels. All three are from Universal Studios.
They join two more comedy pilots ordered by NBC earlier today, the multi-camera Jefferies and single-camera American Auto. With the multi-camera Night School ordered to pilot earlier in January, two comedies having straight-to-series orders, untitled La Mayor and Young Rock,...

HBO has set an April 12 release date for season four of Issa Rae’s critically acclaimed comedy Insecure and served a new trailer at TCA Wednesday morning. Creator and star Rae was joined by executive producer/writer/director Prentice Penny and fellow cast members Yvonne Orji and Jay Ellis to tease details about the forthcoming season. But before getting into that, Rae was asked about the subtle shade thrown at the Academy when she and John Cho unveiled the nominees on Monday.
Rae was tasked with announcing the Best Director nominees, which echoed the Golden Globes and BAFTA Awards in shutting out women. After unveiling all the nominees, she said “Congratulations to those men” which was immediately noticed and applauded by the internet.
“John Cho and I were told to banter for five seconds so that was my banter — I didn’t lie,” Rae said bluntly. “I said congratulations and there were men there.

Over the turbulent two-day period of “Brooklyn Nine-Nine‘s” cancellation on Fox and it’s subsequent pickup for a sixth season on NBC, star Andy Samberg says that now that the dust has settled, he’s thrilled where the show ended up.
“I would’ve been happy almost anywhere because I love this show so much and I wanted to keep doing it, but for me personally having already spent time working at NBC, I really enjoyed that experience,” Samberg, who worked on “Saturday Night Live” for eight seasons, told Variety at “Brooklyn Nine-Nine’s” For Your Consideration event on Wednesday.
Immediately, the actor and comedian said that he felt at ease returning to the network where he got his start, remembering, “Literally when we flew out to New York for Upfronts, I was welcomed back to New York by all of the security guards at 30 Rock. They were like ‘Hey!

The Writers Guild of America has just announced the nominations for their annual awards for Best Screenplays (by writers who are guild signatories). That’s right, before you get nervous thinking that your favorite may have been left off the list, you must remember that the WGA is the group that is not all-inclusive and leaves out several of the top contenders each year due to them not being part of the guild or not following their very specific rules. For this reason, you won’t see Inside Out, The Hateful Eight, and Ex Machina in the Original Screenplay category or Room, Brooklyn, or Anomalisa in the Adapted screenplay category.
Taking a look at what’s left over for the nominations, we find many that were expected to make a showing, including Spotlight and Bridge of Spies for Original Screenplay, though they apparently had to sink to really low depths...
