Magnolia Pictures has acquired the U.S. rights to the Toronto International Film Festival breakout film “40 Acres” starring Danielle Deadwyler.

The action-thriller, which comes from debut feature filmmaker R.T. Thorne, also stars Michael Greyeyes (“Firestarter”). The film premiered at TIFF in 2024, gaining wide applause from its audience and film critics. It was listed as one of the festival’s Top 10 films from that year.

The film also stars Kataem O’Connor, Leenah Robinson, Jaeda LeBlanc, Haile Amare, Elizabeth Saunders and Tyrone Benskin. In March, “40 Acres” will make its U.S. premiere at the South by Southwest film festival, which will be followed by a summer theatrical release.

Netflix has shared the official trailer, posters, and photos for Time Cut, an upcoming sci-fi slasher film directed by Hannah Macpherson, who co-wrote the script with Michael Kennedy. Kennedy wrote the story.

In Time Cut, Madison Bailey plays a teenage girl who travels back to the early 2000s to stop a vicious killer from murdering her sister, played by Antonia Gentry. The movie will be available to stream on October 30, just in time for Halloween.

The cast includes Madison Bailey, Antonia Gentry, Michael Shanks, Griffin Gluck, Rachael Crawford, and Jordan Pettle.

Megan Best, Samuel Braun, Sydney Sabiston, and Kataem O’Connor round out the cast.

The Ace Entertainment production began principal photography on July 6, 2021, and filming ended in August 2021. Matt Kaplan and Christopher Landon are the producers.

The executive producers include Christopher Foss, Matthew Janzen, Max Siemers, and Aubrey Bendix. The cinematography was by Tony Mirza and the late Halyna Hutchins.

For as long as Danielle Deadwyler has had to wait to take the lead in an action film like “40 Acres,” it takes far less time for the “Till” star to demonstrate the full range of her strengths. Given the kind of introduction usually reserved for the likes of Clint Eastwood or Bruce Willis as a camera runs up her back, only to reveal her face after plunging a knife into an intruder on her property, it just hits differently when a Black woman is presented with such power, and though R.T. Thorne’s dynamic siege thriller has some familiar moves, it is full of fresh ideas.

Set in a dystopian future where the animal population has been wiped out 14 years earlier because of a fungal pandemic, “40 Acres” shows a new world order: Farmers who can produce their own crops hold their own while others shuffle along for survival...

The thriller film “40 Acres” will make its world premiere at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival. The movie tells the story of a family struggling to survive in a post-collapse society and protect their farmland. Director R.T. Thorne started developing the idea six years ago but the Covid-19 pandemic also influenced his vision.

The movie stars Danielle Deadwyler as Hailey Freeman, a former soldier who now protects her rural home with her partner, played by Michael Greyeyes. Hailey’s eldest son, portrayed by Kataem O’Connor, wants a different life, causing tension. There is a good chance that if Danielle Deadwyler was actually faced with an apocalypse, she’d be able to navigate the chaos of it all with the same poise that she does in “40 Acres.”

At least, her latest resolute-yet-vulnerable performance certainly makes the case for it. Alongside the great Michael Greyeyes, she gives this post-apocalyptic family drama a sense of gravity just as she is able to leap into action when bloody battles ensue.

Though Deadwyler has already gained acclaim for her work on everything from “Till” to this year’s “The Piano Lesson,” “40 Acres” lets her flex other genre muscles while never missing a step in her acting. Even as she’s been outstanding in the series “Station Eleven,” which was also about the end of the world, this newest project is more confined while still having plenty to chew on about civilization’s collapse.

Two stars from two very popular Netflix teen shows will be starring together in a new slasher for the streamer. We're talking about Outer Banks star Madison Bailey and Ginny & Georgia's Antonia Gentry. The horror movie is called Time Cut, and it's coming to Netflix this fall. We first learned of this film back in May 2021. It was announced that To All the Boys producer Ace Entertainment would be making a YA movie called Time Cut and that it would star Bailey and Gentry.
