Exclusive: Magnolia Pictures has acquired U.S. rights to 40 Acres, an action-thriller starring Danielle Deadwyler (Till) and Michael Greyeyes (True Detective), from world sales company Visit Films. Hailing from debut filmmaker R.T. Thorne, who wrote the script with Glenn Taylor, the film will be released in theaters in early summer.
World premiering at TIFF, where it was named one of Canada’s Top 10 films of the 2024 festival, 40 Acres is set in a world where a plague has eradicated all animal life and famine has spread across the globe, leaving society at war and in ruins, but the Freemans are surviving — even thriving — on their ancestral farm, so long as they dispatch the occasional raiding party. But what good is surviving the end of the world if it means snuffing out your own humanity? Former soldier Hailey (Deadwyler) made that choice years ago, believing that isolation was the only way to protect her family.

Three years ago, it was announced that Freaky (watch it Here) collaborators Michael Kennedy and Christopher Landon would be teaming up again to bring us a new genre project called Time Cut, which was being described as “Back to the Future meets Scream” – and now, Time Cut has finally made its way out into the world! The movie is available to watch on the Netflix streaming service (you can read our review at This Link), and in the build-up to the release JoBlo’s own Tyler Nichols had the chance to sit down for an interview with the film’s director, Hannah MacPherson, as well as the stars of the film, Madison Bailey and Antonia Gentry. You can find out what they had to say about Time Cut by checking out the video embedded above.

While presenting a gripping time travel drama, Netflix's Time Cut also features memorable performances from its talented cast members. Directed by Hannah MacPherson, Time Cut riffs on many familiar tropes of the slasher and time travel genre to walk viewers through a compelling tale of grief, revenge, and the ripple effect of one's actions. However, even though it does not cover new ground in the genre, it manages to instill nostalgia in viewers through its portrayal of the mid-aughts.
Apart from being nostalgic, Time Cut also features some edge-of-the-seat action and white-knuckling serial killer scenes that are enough to keep viewers hooked throughout its runtime. What makes its drama and action even more enthralling is the commendable performances of its cast members. Since Time Cut's cast plays a crucial role in making its time travel twists and turns more impactful, viewers may be curious about who plays whom...

"We're not altering the future, we're just giving it a make-over." Netflix has revealed an official trailer for a time travel slasher horror movie called Time Cut, arriving to watch on Netflix at the end of October in just a few weeks. 40 Acres starts at the Freeman farm. An assault on the farm and its occupants is about to occur, but a small, mighty group manages to stop the assailants and ensure they never return. Here, we meet Hailey (Danielle Deadwyler), a former soldier who has trained her family, which comprises her partner Galen (Michael Greyeyes) and their four children, the oldest of whom is her son Emmanuel (Kateem O'Connor). The Freemans hold firm to their values, protecting their land, training to survive, and never forgetting their respective history as a blended Black and Indigenous family.

For as long as Danielle Deadwyler has had to wait to take the lead in an action film like “40 Acres,” it takes far less time for the “Till” star to demonstrate the full range of her strengths. Given the kind of introduction usually reserved for the likes of Clint Eastwood or Bruce Willis as a camera runs up her back, only to reveal her face after plunging a knife into an intruder on her property, it just hits differently when a Black woman is presented with such power, and though R.T. Thorne’s dynamic siege thriller has some familiar moves, it is full of fresh ideas.
Set in a dystopian future where the animal population has been wiped out 14 years earlier because of a fungal pandemic, “40 Acres” shows a new world order: Farmers who can produce their own crops hold their own while others shuffle along for survival...

The thriller film “40 Acres” will make its world premiere at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival. The movie tells the story of a family struggling to survive in a post-collapse society and protect their farmland. Director R.T. Thorne started developing the idea six years ago but the Covid-19 pandemic also influenced his vision.
The movie stars Danielle Deadwyler as Hailey Freeman, a former soldier who now protects her rural home with her partner, played by Michael Greyeyes. Hailey’s eldest son, portrayed by Kataem O’Connor, wants a different life, causing tension. Set in Northern Ontario, the Freeman family defends their 40 acres of land from an organized militia aiming to take it over.
Thorne says the story explores important themes like land ownership during crises and the divide between generations. He wanted to show how parents prepare kids for hard times ahead. A key plot focuses on Hailey advocating...

There is a good chance that if Danielle Deadwyler was actually faced with an apocalypse, she’d be able to navigate the chaos of it all with the same poise that she does in “40 Acres.”
At least, her latest resolute-yet-vulnerable performance certainly makes the case for it. Alongside the great Michael Greyeyes, she gives this post-apocalyptic family drama a sense of gravity just as she is able to leap into action when bloody battles ensue.
Though Deadwyler has already gained acclaim for her work on everything from “Till” to this year’s “The Piano Lesson,” “40 Acres” lets her flex other genre muscles while never missing a step in her acting. Even as she’s been outstanding in the series “Station Eleven,” which was also about the end of the world, this newest project is more confined while still having plenty to chew on about civilization’s collapse.

In his dystopian thriller 40 Acres, director R.T. Thorne tells the story of Hailey Freeman, a mother played by Danielle Deadwyler, and her eldest son (Kataem O’Connor) as they hold opposing beliefs about how to survive the end of the world.
Set in a famine-decimated future, Hailey is a fiercely protective ex-military matriarch leading descendants of a Black family of farmers who settled in Canada after the American Civil War. Haunted by the murder of her father, Hailey seeks total isolation as she tells her children to stay on the farm to battle an organized militia looking to violently seize their 40 acres.
But Hailey’s son Emanuel, rebelling against his family’s seclusion, has other ideas. He wants to explore the world and seek alliances after meeting a young woman from a nearby farm, played by Milcania Diaz-Rojas, in the forest beyond his farm’s perimeter. Thorne argues that 40 Acres,...

The writer and director of slasher-comedy Freaky are reuniting for a brand new time-traveling slasher movie titled Time Cut, with Christopher Landon producing and Michael Kennedy writing the script alongside Hanna Macpherson (“Into the Dark”). MacPherson also directs Time Cut, which has been described as “Back to the Future meets Scream.”
We’ve learned today that Time Cut is coming to Netflix in 2024!
In the upcoming slasher, “A teenage girl travels back to the early 2000s to stop a vicious killer from murdering her sister.”
It sounds like this one is cut from the same cloth as Freaky, Happy Death Day, It’s a Wonderful Knife and Totally Killer, part of a new breed of horror-comedy-slasher hybrids.
Madison Bailey (Outer Banks) and Antonia Gentry (Ginny & Georgia) star alongside Michael Shanks, Griffin Gluck, Rachael Crawford, Jordan Pettle, Megan Best, Samuel Braun, Sydney Sabiston, and Kataem O’Connor.
Time Cut features a story by Michael Kennedy.
