At nine years old, Paul hired his brother David to help him sell short stories in front of their home. Over the course of this summer business venture, they managed to sell two for a total of $4.25. They spent the money on a Big Bite and a Slurpee at 7/11.

Paul's father owned a restaurant across from a movie theater, which is where Paul lived for most of his childhood. Robert Altman's Popeye (1980) was the first movie he ever saw and loved. He also watched Pennies from Heaven (1981) and Arthur (1981) every day of their theatrical runs.

Paul spent several years touring with his childhood friends in the band Explosions in the Sky as a lighting director. Paul was not a lighting director.
