The end of an era is coming when Stranger Things Season 5 debuts on Netflix, bringing the strange horror of Hawkins to its conclusion. Stakes are at an all-time high for the Duffer Brothers to stick the landing, lest they suffer a Game of Thrones-like crash-and-burn as fans react to the finale. Speaking with the Podcrushed podcast with hosts Penn Badgley, Nava Kavelin, and Sophie Ansari, Maya Hawke, who plays Robin Buckley in the series, said fans can expect plenty to chew on as the season is massive.
“We’re making, basically, eight movies,” Hawke told the group. “The episodes are very long.”
According to Maya Hawke, Stranger Things Season 5’s production has been incredible to witness throughout 2024, with bold decisions about the show surfacing nonstop. The final season takes place roughly three years after Season 4, explaining why the Hawkins kids are all grown up and still scarred by their abnormal and traumatic past.

Another beloved movie is about to undergo the remake / reboot treatment next year. 1999’s horror-comedy Idle Hands was a box-office bomb on its initial release, but has since entered the realm of cult favorites.
Finn Wolfhard (Stranger Things) and Billy Bryk have been signed to write a “reimagining” of Idle Hands, which is planned to be released in the summer of 2025. They are also in talks to possibly direct the remake. Wolfhard and Bryk previously worked together on another horror-comedy, Hell of a Summer, which they wrote and directed, and starred in together. The two received a lot of critical acclaim for Hell of a Summer, which is quite a feat given their young ages; Wolfhard is 22, and Bryk is 25.
Finn Wolfhard achieved early notoriety because of his portrayal of Mike Wheeler in Netflix series Stranger Things. He had previously appeared in the series 100 and Supernatural, but as we all remember,...

In the years after Game of Thrones ended on HBO, many television shows have vied to become the next cultural TV phenomenon, but of them all, Stranger Things might be the only that's actually in a comparable league. There's no understating how big this series is and how much it gets people talking, which means there's an awful lot of anticipation to see how it all wraps up in season 5.
But unlike Thrones, Stranger Things doesn't often kill off main characters, at least not from the core group which have been on the show since its opening episodes back in 2016. That includes the kids at the heart of the story: Mike Wheeler (Finn Wolfhard), Will Byers (Noah Schnapp), Dustin Henderson (Gaten Matarazzo...

The character of Jim Hopper on the hit Netflix series Stranger Things has a tragic history, having lost a young daughter named Sara to cancer – an illness he blames on the fact that he served in the Chemical Corps during the Vietnam War and worked with Agent Orange. Sara was glimpsed in flashbacks in the season 1 finale, where she was played by child actress Elle Graham. The fifth and final season of Stranger Things is currently in production, and Sara will be making another appearance in this last batch of episodes – but that Stranger Things season 1 finale was eight years ago, so Graham, who is now 15 years old, has aged out of the role. For years, Hollywood leaned toward casting actors in their late 20s and 30s when it comes to teen roles, as there is often less hassle to work with more experienced actors. Fortunately, Netflix’s Stranger Things, which also served as a big break for the streaming platform, opted to go with actual teens that fit the roles.

The Deliverance is one of the most anticipated horror films of 2024. Directed by Lee Daniels from a screenplay co-written by David Coggeshall and Elijah Bynum, the Netflix mystery horror film is inspired by a true story known as the Ammons haunting case. The real story on which the film is based took place in Gary, Indiana in 2011 and it revolved around Latoya Ammons, her mother, Rosa Campbell, and her three children.
The real has been changed to make the film good and not boring but there are many scenes in the film that are based on Ammons’ claims, one of which is the one where a child crawls backward up a hospital wall.

When Andra Day was considering the lead role of Ebony in Lee Daniels’ latest film The Deliverance, she consulted two entities: God and her mom.

And she has been very clear with me, she said, ‘I’m not going to watch the movie,’ not because she doesn’t think that the message is great. My mother’s just like, ‘Listen, if it ain’t Disney+, I’m out. I see her keeping me awake at night.'” (Laughs.)
The Deliverance, which is now streaming on Netflix after a limited theatrical run, draws from the true story of Latoya Ammons, an Indiana woman who, in 2011, claimed she and her children had been possessed by demons.

Glenn Close collaborated with Lee Daniels for the first time on their new horror film “The Deliverance,” and in an interview with Radio Andy, she said colleagues warned her about the director that “he’s crazy.” That only pushed Close to work with him more.
“For me, that’s a compliment,” the Academy Award nominee said. “A lot of times when people in this business say someone’s crazy it means they don’t suffer fools, and it means they have a vision and it doesn’t always go along with the crowd.”
Close complimented the director for creating an inclusive environment on set. The “Fatal Attraction” star said Daniels would encourage the cast to gather around the monitor after a difficult take. She said most directors would not open themselves up to criticism in the way Daniels did.

Aside from IP with mass appeal and superhero stuff, horror is about the only thing that seems to make any money at the box office these days. That's mostly due to the fact horror movies typically don't cost a whole lot to make, leaving more profit on the table at the end of their theatrical runs. But horror isn't just a reliably popular genre at the box office. It also does well on streaming, where we've actually had some pretty decent offerings in recent years.
By far the best example is "His House," which hit Netflix back in 2020 and was even better than your favorite horror movie. Indeed, the film earned a rare 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, and proved that Netflix could be much more than a delivery method for middling Kevin Hart projects and instantly forgettable streaming films. Unfortunately, not all the horror that emerges on Netflix is of quite the same standard.

There’s a line from Glenn Close in the third act of Lee Daniels’ possession horror The Deliverance that is undeniably gasp-worthy — a gratuitous piece of unholy dialogue that would be eyebrow-raising anyway, let alone when delivered by an Egot nominee sporting pointy teeth and demon claws. Whether that line falls on the side of so-wild-it’s-kind-of-great, or just-plain-cringe, it is at least attention-grabbing — which sadly can’t be said for the rest of The Deliverance’s denouement.
The intention is interesting. Daniels — previously behind Precious, The Butler, and most recently The United States Vs. Billie Holiday — places a rare Black lens on the possession-horror subgenre, exploring the trials of single mother Ebony. Her predicament is already precarious: she’s previously spent time in prison; she has issues with alcohol; she’s raising three kids while funding her mother’s (Glenn Close) cancer treatment; social services are constantly circling. Lee Daniels’ new horror film, The Deliverance, has received mixed reviews, but Glenn Close’s performance has been widely praised by fans. Daniels’ film is a supernatural thriller based on the real-life Ammons haunting case. In the film, Andra Day plays Ebony Jackson, a character inspired by Latoya Ammons, while Close plays her religious White mother.

However, in one unexpectedly light moment, Close delivers a line that almost choked up fans with laughter. The line felt majorly out of place in an otherwise spine-chilling film. While some fans found the moment amusing, others were disappointed that Daniels had an eight-time Oscar nominee deliver such a line.

"The Exorcist," "Poltergeist," and... "The Deliverance"? With its wild writing choices, a wig-wearing Glenn Close, and a mounting pile of mostly negative reviews, the new Netflix horror film from Lee Daniels doesn't exactly seem like it's ready to stand among the genre greats. Yet according to Daniels himself, the three movies have something in common: their sets were all supposedly cursed.
"Listen, I read those books about the making of 'Poltergeist' and the making of 'The Exorcist,'" Daniels told Variety in a new interview. "And I'm like, 'Nope, not today, Satan. Ain't happening today up in this motherf***er.'"
The filmmaker behind "The Butler" and "The Paperboy" may have had some reason to be concerned. Although both of the other movie "curses" mentioned above were likely a combination of coincidence and unsafe working conditions (more on that later), the allegedly true story "The Deliverance" is based on is pretty spooky.

It's finally the last weekend of August, which means we're getting so close to fall. While the weather might not be totally cooperating just yet, Netflix has already announced its fall movie lineup and continued to announce which series will be back for new seasons throughout the rest of the year. But before we can get into all the good new releases to come very soon, we have to see off August.
This weekend brings not only the last day of August but the first day of September, and a new month always means a long list of new movies on Netflix! The streamer dropped two brand-new series that will have everyone talking, the Greek mythology dark comedy Kaos and the Spanish medical drama Breathless. Lee Daniels’ new horror movie “The Deliverance” marks a reunion for the director and his Oscar-winning “Precious” star Mo’Nique following a yearslong feud.
Despite the animosity that stemmed from Mo’Nique’s public criticism of Daniels and “Precious” producer Oprah Winfrey, the actor never doubted that they would work together again. “He’s my friend,” Mo’Nique told me at the “Deliverance” premiere in Los Angeles on Wednesday night at Netflix’s Tudum Theater.
“You ever have somebody in your life where your chemistry is right there but something happened and it pulls you apart, but you don’t forget the heart of the person?” she continued. “You don’t forget the purity of this person and you say, ‘I’m willing to fight for this friendship.’”

Lee Daniels' new Netflix movie "The Deliverance" is trying to be two things at once. For most of its runtime, it's a down-to-earth family drama with an unapologetically prickly protagonist. Then, the film descends into the hoariest of cliches as it turns into a heavily religious possession horror pic, complete with potty-mouthed demons and children contorting their bodies in unnatural ways. Neither of these approaches are particularly successful together, although the family drama stuff works much, much better than the horror movie trappings. Billing itself as being based on true events (sure), "The Deliverance" is at its best when its focusing on its flawed main character. That would be single mother Ebony Jackson, played with real grit by Andra Day, who starred in Daniels' "The United States vs. Billie Holiday."

There is a warped logic to Lee Daniels, filmmaker of nose-boppingly obvious melodramas and sordid stupidity, moving into horror. In an exorcism film, reason is often the only thing standing in the way of the haunted family getting some relief. But Daniels’ big, broad tone doesn’t lend itself to his ultra-serious tale of addiction,...

Plot: An Indiana family discovers strange, demonic occurrences that convince them and their community that the house is a portal to hell.
Review: Netflix is pretty hit or miss when it comes to their horror releases. While their horror TV output has been impressive, there often seems to be a considerable quality drop when it comes to film. So adding a movie from an Oscar-nominated director seems like a winning formula to break that curse. Unfortunately, no one at Netflix seemed to be aware that Lee Daniels doesn’t know horror. At least, nothing that isn’t extremely stereotypical and repeating beats of other popular films. Because if there’s one thing about The Deliverance that’s clear: it was inspired by much better films.

Horror is almost an afterthought in director Lee Daniels’ The Deliverance. The director behind domestic drama Precious and musical biopic United States vs. Billie Holiday draws inspiration from the true story of Latoya Ammons, focusing on the plight of a single mother struggling to survive when her new home harbors an evil that means them all harm. Daniels cuts to the fierce heart of the fictional family at the center of this possession drama, exposing flaws and all, but gets a little too skittish around the horror, so much so that The Deliverance uses the well-trodden exorcism formula to relay didactic faith-based messaging.

Outer Banks is one of the best teen dramas on TV right now, and it has been since the show premiered on Netflix in 2020. Now, Outer Banks is heading into its fourth season on Netflix this fall. We're still waiting on the premiere date, but we know the interest in the Netflix original series is at an all-time high.
Everybody wants to see Chase Stokes, Madelyn Cline, Jonathan Daviss, Madison Bailey, Rudy Pankow, Drew Starkey, and Carlacia Grant back in the Outer Banks working on finding a new treasure. Luckily, we don't have to wait too long, although Netflix hasn't announced the premiere of the fourth season yet.
There are lots of lists of shows to watch if you like Outer Banks. On them, you'll find all of the latest summer, beach, and teen dramas, but I think Outer Banks fans need more than that. We don't just love the show because it's good vibes.

Netflix’s possession horror movie The Deliverance is loosely based on the 2011 account of Latoya Ammons and her family’s haunting, otherwise known as the Demon House. Director Lee Daniels didn’t want to take any chances when it came to broaching the horror tied to Ammons’ account and enlisted an apostle to anoint the set with prayer.
The Deliverance, out now in select theaters before arriving on Netflix August 30, stars Andra Day, Glenn Close, Mo’Nique, Aunjanue Ellis, Caleb McLaughlin and Tasha Smith.

But when strange occurrences inside the home raise the suspicions of Child Protective Services and threaten to tear the family apart, Ebony soon finds herself locked in a battle for her life and the souls of her children.”

Renowned director Lee Daniels delves into supernaturally charged waters with The Deliverance. Inspired by real haunting claims in Indiana, Daniels spins a tale of single mom Ebony fighting to protect her family from the looming darkness in their new Pittsburgh home. Ebony’s battle unwittingly becomes a struggle against human forces too, as demons lurk within and beyond the house’s walls.
Joining Daniels in bringing this story to life are screenwriters David Coggeshall and Elijah Bynum, adapting the true events, and a stellar cast led by Andra Day. Fans of Daniel’s works know he excels at coaxing tremendous performances from actors, and The Deliverance continues that trend. Day’s raw and lived-in portrayal of Ebony anchors the film, while Glenn Close and Mo’Nique revisit collaborations with Daniels from past triumphs.

Lee Daniels’ Netflix haunted house thriller, “The Deliverance,” opens by solemnly promising that it’s “inspired by true events.” It’s a clichéd start to some clichéd horror, but you’ll be rewarded for looking further: as it turns out, those alleged events are just an excuse to explore quieter, and more compelling, truths.
This is thanks, in large part, to a tour-de-force turn from Andra Day as exhausted single mother Ebony. She and her three children have just moved to a new home, and—what with the flies buzzing around the basement, and the kids’ newly weird behavior—it’s pretty clear something is off.
We’ve all seen enough movies to know where this is headed, but it takes Ebony a while to figure it out. And you can’t blame her. She may be dealing with an ancient demon breaking out of Hell, but she’s already...

As a filmmaker, Lee Daniels tends to get slagged off on for being flamboyantly garish and over-the-top. Some of that is deserved, but the truth is that when he’s cooking on all cylinders Daniels is a gifted filmmaker. “The Deliverance” is the sixth feature he has directed, and I’ve been a fan of three of them: “Precious” (2009), his extraordinary tale of a stunted inner-city teenager’s escape from her domestic hell; “The Paperboy” (2012), a bold and unnerving Southern gothic noir; and “The United States vs. Billie Holiday” (2021), a musical-political biopic that, while flawed, did a superb job of channeling its subject’s complicated ferocity.
So when I say that “The Deliverance,” a demonic-possession movie that Daniels made for Netflix, is one of his kitschy-extreme schlock extravaganzas, I’m not saying that he’s always like that. But sometimes he is. And “The Deliverance” is not without its socially provocative Daniels undercurrents.

About a month ago, Netflix released a video marking the halfway point of filming on the fifth and final season of Stranger Things. Now, showrunner Ross Duffer has released a new cache of images giving us a behind-the-scenes look at things are going. It's captioned "Weeks 28-30." About a month ago, at the halfway point, it would have been Weeks 24-27. That means Stranger Things has roughly 20 weeks left in its filming schedule, which could take it into mid-January of 2025.

Inspired by the alleged 2011 haunting of a rental home in Gary, Indiana, occupied by Latoya Ammons and her three children, Lee Daniels’s The Deliverance generally abides by the tried-and-true Amityville Horror playbook when it comes to its scare tactics. But Daniels isn’t one to turn in an anonymous genre effort, so his stab at a haunted house story leaves plenty of room to explore the toxic cycles of abuse endured by the family at its center, freely indulging his penchant for robust miserabilist melodrama and showy performances.

A possession horror flick from the Oscar-nominated director of The Butler and Precious, co-written by the filmmaker behind the ill-fated Magazine Dreams, and starring Academy Award nominees Andra Day, Glenn Close, and Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor is probably not something you had on your 2024 bingo card, but it’s exactly what Netflix is making audiences suffer in The Deliverance. And despite its ambitions — and pretensions — The Deliverance does not transcend its genre trappings; it just attempts to ignore them to incredibly dull results.
The Deliverance Review
The film tells the story of a family plagued by strange, demonic occurrences in their otherwise peaceful household, which causes them to become convinced that their house is actually a portal to Hell. The closing credits claim that the script was inspired by the true story of Latoya Ammons, but you wouldn’t be able to tell the difference because of all the generic tropes and formulaic beats it follows.

Lee Daniels’ first-ever horror effort, “The Deliverance,” is not to be confused with 1972’s “Deliverance.” Although, much like John Boorman’s three-time Oscar nominee about idiot canoers going through hell in rural Georgia, it does make movie-watching pretty painful.
Not since “Hillbilly Elegy” has Netflix done Glenn Close so dirty. That’s true even taking into account her small part in the hugely horrible “Heart of Stone” for the streamer last year. “The Deliverance” director Daniels, an ambitious storyteller with an admirably spotty track record, is best known for creating the TV show “Empire” with Danny Strong and, before that, helming the Sundance darling “Precious,”.
Back in 2009, Daniels’ talents as a producer on 2001’s “Monster’s Ball” preceded the success of his eventual Best Picture contender, “Precious,” but the bleak family drama about a Black family living in Harlem is what turned him into a celebrated director. His gritty portrait of...

Lee Daniels’ The Deliverance is, on the one hand, a typical and considered domestic drama about a matriarch (Andra Day) balancing family obligations, alcoholism and a tempestuous relationship with her mother (Glenn Close). On the other hand, it represents the director’s foray into the supernatural. Here, Daniels, the director of slushy films like Precious and The Butler, digs into hauntings and, from them, extracts lessons in faith. It’s possible for both narrative threads to co-exist or intertwine harmoniously, and the film’s structure reveals Daniels’ intention for them to inform one another. But The Deliverance is too choppy an affair, and the mix rarely achieves total coherence.
Taking inspiration from the real-life story of Latoya Ammons, an Indiana woman who claimed that malevolent spirits lurked in her home and possessed her children, Daniels tells the tale of Ebony (Day), a single mother contending with financial problems and state surveillance,...

Sadie Sink is admitting that she didn’t anticipate her “Stranger Things” character Max to be such a breakout star.
The actress told Variety that after joining the hit Netflix series in Season 2 at age 14, she could not have predicted the viral adoration for her role of Max by Season 4. The cliffhanger ending for the season included Max being in a coma after facing off with Vecna (Jamie Campbell Bower).
“I really didn’t think people would care all that much about her journey,” Sink said. Even when Max went viral with the “Running Up That Hill” sequence, Sink was still shocked: “I was kind of like, ‘That’s cool.'”
The “A Sacrifice” actress added, “I think I’m definitely numb to a lot of things now, which is a good thing. I think it keeps you stable.”
As for returning for the fifth and final season of the beloved series,...
